12:03 am
of us, not just black or white, buall of us. yesterday spoke a little about hoi was raised. and myfather, he was a very strong individual who demaed a very high standard from . in everything. you saidsomething very interestg is that i could have turned out a mean person. i do have at side ofme. buwhat i y to do isto e best of my ability funnel it back into e music. larry aham is a dear friend ofmine, and want to say what's up to him and tina. i will be home shortly, but i am having a lot of fun ouhere though. i just nted to say something, larrhas volate side to m too. he told me a story on,
12:04 am
lay, i just got to tell this. e time larry and freddie from sly anthfamily stone, were on their way to gig to open for ji hendrix, right then am shing, can't wait hear what is going down. on the way to the gig they pick amplifiers and the car is aded with them. 's hard to see and they are drivg and late trying get to the gig. they either hit this guy or the guruns into them, buthere is anaccident, right inthe middle the street of neyork. larry jumps ouofthe car, whoops this dude's backside freddie iswith him, you know, they are both from kland, so you know what time it is; right? i d't even nt to see what the othedude looked like. tavis: yeah.
12:05 am
>>it's like he got th side to him. i was just taken by that part of the stor anthen i asked him, so when yogot to the gig, what happened? whwon the battle between you and herix. anlarry said, oh we spanked him. wait a mite, you spanked jimi hendrix. the sa thing with him, if you listen his music u can hear the bass and funk, the anr is in songs like "people" and "waterand "it a't no fun to ." that's at i leard from. th's my teacr. tavis: colonized mind, two more, we referenced on th last nigh "feel better, feel
12:06 am
good." i love the title. >> 's about for folks to stop ting. there is referencing in e so to a reco distributor, and we have had a t of conversations, anyou try to do me like my big brother steve. what we believe in thmusic industry this, you can pu out a record and soundscan refuses to count as many as th sell. but u get paid on what sodscan says you sold. if it's a loan number you ge paidon that number. meanwhile u with gooverse and check bar des and titles over there, they ha already ripped you off several
12:07 am
different times and ways. d the influx of the internet, those sales, then you really tten your bank accot emptied t. so wenever really knew what "purple rain" sold, i don't know to is day. i know what they to me. wee conducting an audit, but who knows. tavis: a whole bunch. >> we exct. at's an ode to how i grew up. d there are a cuent references other words to bailouts giveto banks and things like that. whereas ere is a lot of us in the hood, ill, going through the same stuff. now it's interesting, i don't live there anore. but have to take care of a lot of peop that live back
12:08 am
the. and it just be besti hear lot of talk about redistributionof the wealth, it would be be r ustrying to run things on our own for a nute. give us our master tapes ba. let us sell like you sell. if yogo to e inrnet you will see aists with 51 milln mitts. -- hits. and they say there are 52 millioople on myace, and that's a tion. i shudder tosee whatthat is. tavis: speaking of one's perspectiv you are either a geniusdoing stuff like this, doing yourselfor stributing yourlf. you e either a geniusor a hater of the industrya hater of the y things ought to be
12:09 am
done. tell the strategy behind what you ardoing these das. >> first of all, there is no hate volved. i welcome the industry to stay d remain the way it is. it's good when i am siing lking to someone like ana baker, we can point to the industry as the way don't want to do itanymore. wedon't beeve in free gos. we don't believe in, you know, 90% of the contract the wa it'written now. we don't belie in 0 deals, anyo that signs one of those, absolutely crazy. but it's free country anyou n do what you want ththinking is to introduce a new tist to th world, someone who dearto me, her musisoothes me. i am not a big fan of male vocasts. i usually when i do ballads,i
12:10 am
use my higher gister. because love the female voice doinslow music. spoke too soon in stakening comparing bria's music to shay's music. i didn'mean that shsounde like he but there is romance in the music, like "love is stronger thanpride." and therwas romance missg in today's music. the best thg i could tell bria is try to do someing that is not happeningoday. trying to get in the niche, beuse you have a beautiful voice. but you got to do something with it th you don't he. and th's what she's ne. it's one of those sleeper records that if people ay and listen to all the way through,
12:11 am
she got you. tavis:why i am not hearing lot of this on radio? >> i think it's because i am not signed wi a major label. target is not a rerd company, they are distributor and retail store. and a od onat that, million people go through the ores every week. they havea ance to pick up the lotusflow3r record. theyare treating uslike any other record compy, they buy the same amount and pay th sa price. we havedone que well already, bria istaken care of and i am. and i pe to do more deals with anita baker, we are trying to work on jazz things. but me will tell tavis: it was amazg to me, without radio airplay, as a
12:12 am
sole diributor, you end missing no. 1 whethis thing dropped. like maxwell smart, missed it by that much. >>again, that'when the fighter in me comes out. and i think of jack johnson knocki someone down threor four timeand lo the fight. soundscan said it was no. 2. other charts say it was no. 1. it doesn't make a difference to one waor another. what makea difference tome is that story is to truthfully. and that's not always the case. i love golf and boxing, because it's emano demano.
12:13 am
we wish it were the on radio anthere some resistance to . you will haveto ask your friendat radio, the friends i ask haven't givemea straight answer tavis: if you had a string of stations that you were the owner and prram director of wh would it und like? >> i want it to be goodmuc d liered with artists that own their master rights. because without that they don't own any wealth. they n't put back into the communy. ere are few that own their maer's. when u see that the future, you will see more radio waves being purchased and those changing rapidly. tavis: yotold thjimi hendrix earlier, but you are the best guitarist of all times.
12:14 am
>> man, i love th show. tavis: i am being a truth ller. what do you ke of th guitar hero? >> well, i am mad at them, i heard they made $200 billion and offered us a small portion of that. i think it's more important that kids lea how to acally play the guar. it's a ugh instrument, it's not easy. it took me a ng time. it was frustrating at first. anyou just ve to ick with it. and it'cool r pele who don't have ti to arn the rds. but toplay music is one of the greatest things to eate something om nothg is one of the greast feelings. and i would, i don't know, i wish it upon everybody. it'heaven.
12:15 am
tavi and s's one of three, elixer, bria valente, from the package, lotusflow3r.com. tell me how you found her? >> she said she met me first. and that's what shtells me. say that i met her first. i will say th, that morris hayes is very instrumental, my keybrd player, it instrumental inus comin together. and on we got gether, we clicked. it was etty easy. and the mo interesting thing abouher is w rapidly e picked up unrstanding of scpture. beuse i pret much lk about that with everyone i know because it informs my life so much no the other thing is that she's
12:16 am
really funy. and she likes to laugh. and yoknow, tavis, i love to laugh. tavis: [laughr]. >> no, i am kidding. tavis:yeah, he's funny. yeah. >> i am kiddg. i told her i wagoing to y at to you one time. that was for her. tavis: you got it out, d on that note you can get out. his name is prince. his new project is called lotusflow3r, it has not one, not two but three cd's, bria valente, let elixer. prince, i lo you and thing u can do about it. up next, bria valente, elixer, stay withus. tavis: bria valente
12:17 am
12:18 am
brian, make sure that prince is gone. good, he's gone tell mee truth, how did you meet, he said you met fit, w do it happen? >> well, i was 17. and i am from minneapoli minnesota. i warking wi morris hayes at the time. he habrought me to paisley park. and i met withmois and ince came down and just sat next to me. didn't look me and said hell and i said hi. and said what is yo name. and i said i am bri -- bria. and he sa nice to meet you. and then he was gone so that was the first time met. tavis: and then fast rward a few years lar and have a oject. >> yes, i moveto l.a., and we had a chance eting and
12:19 am
ded up ba together. d morris hayes was agai-- tavis: the conduit. >> yes, the conduit. vis: what is it like to be inoduced and exposeby prince? >> 's a privilege and a blessing. d the situation inthe working environmt i was in s like a mily. and we all grew up loving musi i grew up with music and my father loved music. and when we got together we combined our tales and made this record we were l very proud of. and i never thought i would be working with prince, to tell you the truth. you moved away minneapolis and came ck home. 's interesting how itworks. vis: tell me about bria's
12:20 am
musi >> i wanted a record from front to back that you can play through and tas about the best quals of love. and that's what this talks about. d we did that, a few songs are jam sessions that we turned into songs ter the fact. and it turned out beautiful, i amso proud of it. tavis: when ever prince introdus us to somebody, ere is always at least one song that all latch on to beuse has that quinsequential song, and we believe that that song for you is "tonight." >> yes, tonight. tavis: she agrees, tell us wh that has th quinsequential
12:21 am
sound. ? >> he'funky and he has that ality and some have compared "nasty girl." yeah, that'how it all comes togeer. tas: to your word choice of comparing, and prin just a few minutes ago made the point, and am quing almost, he said perhaps i spoktoo son when i comparedbriato shadna and hat do you make of the comparisons othersmake of your music and whatever? >> acally this record has a sod of its own. it's hard to compare to anything else. everybody is going to take something fr it bad on thr personal experience. so nothing real bothers me as
12:22 am
far as comparisons are concerned. but st who hear it, my voice has a different tone than other people i ha been compar as i have heard to shan moore d other artists like that. but it really takes on its own engy and has itown feeling. tavis: tell me about the challenge thatprince gave you to create your own sound, to crte your own lane, do something that is not done now. he mentioned that's the challenge gaveyou if he was going to work with you. how did you respond to that chlenge? >>that takes a lot of interspection and you have to sit with yourlf and think of what you want to hear that you are ot hearing. there are certain things that touch me in music and it's when
12:23 am
i hear heart d caring and things like that. that's something th really gets me. anmusic is such a powerful thing that it can capture a mome in your li and bring yoback to that spot. it connects th you on an emotiol level anspiritual level. d i thought what would i enjoy stening to. and i tried to write about thingsi love to he about, and i love the positive ssage of loveand the organic pure music. and i wanted to capture that, something veryreal that pele could listen to and it would touch them. tais: when did u know, cause you modeled antha's part of your back story, wn did u know that music is what you want to do and t jut something you enjoyed? >> i think itwain school, when i was doing talent show
12:24 am
is is when i ew it made me happy. and it really makes you happy when u do something from nothing, and that's the most rewarding feelg. i enjoyed doing that. doing the talent shows and writing muc and learning things from my father he played instrumevis: he's li. but does he do lead vocals an back vocals? >> yeah. vis: yolaunch a project, she isput out as part of a ree cd set. bria valente is the name, know v at and thecd is called elixer. bria, nice to have you on. hope it'not the last.
12:25 am
