mostly, i am a supporterf it. iike the fact that euro is trying to stop centuries -- indeed millennia -- of warfare and to make something bigger of self, a unid states, iyou will. but sometes, the bureaucrats in bssels with the a of eir political bses do the dumbt things. currently,t is all to doith these. that is an incandescent light bulb. work vy well, do not last long,ut ty work very well. not good enough, says the european union got to use one of those newfanglednes with the circles on it, and of course, peoplere understandably m about that. i ve one to show you, but i caught iand broke it, and i nearly just dropp thisne and broke it, t not tworry. you know what they look ke. as theyet olderhe light declines so i is no good that
6:02 am
e last 15 years because by about 10 years, you ne new glass to go with thi long lived lighbulb. it is a ca of government coercion. it is silly, but it explas why people get a little scar of e government in the marketplac i have a greathow for y today with ree of the most talented political commentators working in washingn these days. you are going to lov them, and we will bright back. >> "white house chronicle" is pruced in collaboration with whut howd university television. annow, the program hos nationallyyndicated columnist llewellyn ki, and co-host, lia gasparello. >> hello aga, and tnk you for coming along. i promise you three gat
6:03 am
people, and the great people i ve for you. linda gasparello, who, seetly i can tell y, actually broke the lighbulb. i took the blame. i was ing gallant, but actually, she diit. and from potus radio, the litics of the united states for peop of the united states, joe mathieu >> iried to catch the ligh bulb. you arelucky you d not. anyway, thatrogram is a mainstay of sirius xm radio. i'm ve glad to say that the audio of this program is played at 9:30 a.m. on satuays on potus on 110 a 130 sirius xm rao. and we're very glad thave ba george wiln bause he getsp every daynd looks around t corridors, talking to people finding out what is going on. inow what your up to, trying
6:04 am
to find out what is going o and you are now the host of "gw on the hill," which is being played in washgton on whur- 96 fm. i mention that because it is t sister station twhut, whh originates the program. >> i have full disclose, whur is separate from sirius. i dooth. >> kno you both, but i'm trying to do somethi for our originating station. this is the plug eh her program. the presidt dithis extraordinar thing, a joint session of congss. he made a grt pitch. d he get a sale? >> i think he got a sal from his n people, his own tribe. i'm not sure h got a sale from thether tribe, the
6:05 am
republican what really intested me was thatt was like a convention floor speech. it really had all of that energy of a conntion floor speech. it was like we came afterabor da and we were coming into a nation convention. peop were getting excited about an election and a ampaign, and the presint made a convention floor speech, and it was everything you could imagine in that it had ideasm it. he talked about ted kennedy he talked abouted kennedy's ideals for healthcare. on top of it, he laid out what he thought his vision of this bill thatould you emerge from the congress wouldook lik telling people a little bit more specifically about what he wld like, and he was very blunt in his criticism of the nonsense that has gone ono derail it. >> the people that i tald to this mning have all said that it was a hardlin speh cloaked in very ce burge -- verbage,
6:06 am
th this was apeech that really would make nancy pelos ry happy. it made e bidennd cry. he looke very cheful setting behind the president. >> i tnk the only thing missing last night was the yes we can from democratic memrs of the house. i think what is really going to happen, we obviously are going to read two lls. we are goingo have a house bill which i thi democrats can pass without republicans the realattle comes on e senate side, jt given what max baucus was talking about just yesterda this public opti may not be in the senate packa. if wean ultimately get to conference, th we could have sothing going and ultimately began to craft a bill,ut you have very separate shipsut there now, and i think the president did excellent job of portraying his end of it. >> he did not have great imagery,id he?
6:07 am
he does not do imagery, he es not do churchi's fighting on the beaches martin lutr king jr. is mountain. >> they talked abo when we came here, this is our moment, this is our time, and w came here t do a ecific thing. >> i do not see thats the sor of illustration that changes the argumen but thais me. hodidou find it? >> i he heard aot of people since thepeech, a lot of democrats say -- where has this guy been weot our president back. this is the man we vot f. president went ay for aouple of weeks o vacation, which was interrupted over and over again, but followinghat trail of healthca, town halls with people scrming and swearing d waving their fgers, th presidencame back with a real renewedpirit, and i thinkt began on labor day when the president spoke thalabor day picnic in ncinnati.
6:08 am
that w the barack obama we saw onhe campaign trail. al fire. there was a lk in his es that we have not really seen since he moved into the white house, and that is i think something that cried through in the address before ngress. reactionas been pretty azing, and the president is in a tough situation he does noteally have the ability toake anyone happy, but he has the opportunity to make a lot of pple angry. the liral wg of the democratic party sti upset thate did not draw that proverbial line in thsand on e thetion. republans -- line in e sand on the pubc option. republicans arupset. j wson screamed out the middle of pubc address. i feltike we were watching something from the house of commons, and i can only imagine the article you are cranking out right now. >> i shouldemind people that jo has ihis studio and recoing of mearaphrasing
6:09 am
somedy in the house of commons, which ended up with this pie of extradinary piece of british eloence -- sit down, you sat fac with." thatappens during a hted debate, often after the heat of having a littlbit of refreshment. >> is interesting because remember at one poi, john mccain wasalking about h he would rely like to have something like a parliamentary session of congress where they could sort of pass tngs out in the way it is done in the britisparliament. we st of had that last night. we had the president saying there is ing going on herend wead a representive wilson callin him a liar. that is done in the house of parliament all the time. >> and that was nothenly instce. that is whawe heard on radio an saw on television if you are in the galle, there was a lo me of that going on.
6:10 am
that was pretty rambunctioufor the u.s. house. >> it waas unseemly as we have en the congres in quite awhile. >> there was this: we hav diussed a little bit earlier. there is a very ugly tone that pervasive in the congress, and now it has gotteneyond just healthcare reform. it has gottepersonal. we hav gotten downright nty, and i thk now you have a number of peopleeflecting on this bara obama is indeed the prident. a lot of people are quite unppy about , and i think thathese expressions of outrage -- unfortunatel we are ing to see re of this. >> tell me abo the role of the ack caucus. it has influence with the left wing of the party, largely,
6:11 am
doesn't it? can a twist the arms of the peopleho are holng out for a public aucti? , -- for a public auction -for a publicoption? >> think they wi be somewt isolated they will become obstructionist if they do not go alg with the steamroller that is comin through right no it is aery dangerous position. some that i he spoken to really fear being marginalized as a result of this. it will be interesting to watch. you would thinkhat t congressiol black caucus does have iluence, but they submitted over 62 names with the president of people th thoug could get jobs inhe administration, and ne of these wereonsidered. >> there we notonsidered,r they we not given jobs? >> most of th did notven get interviewed. >> i wonder what the white house is saying behind the snes with members the cbc right now.
6:12 am
it seems that e mentality of the white house is that public opon is only going to slow us down. it i easier to change a lot and has one eventually. it a comeback in a couple of years. wonder if we might s them pull back. >> that is their internal battle. you have the split withinhe caucus, so saying let's go along withhe progr, and hers saying let's draw t line in the nd. you d up the number of cbc members with the lino caucus, et, you are talking about potentiall80 votes. >> what is the president's relationship with meers of the black cauc? who is he close ? who ds he call? who is his chaion? >> it would em to me it would be incline who counts the tes, but it does not appear to be calling them up with a er.
6:13 am
>> article to hi -- are thecool to him? >> they allame aboard, but it was somhat late during the eltion. maxine wats wasot a big pporter at fit, but she loed at what her constuents were doingso she went along with it. i think theres a certain coolne that exists between the bodies. the expectations are ry high, and so far he has not totally delivered. >> for the benefit of our listeners on sirius xm radio, i would like to do and a dedition. i'm llewellyn king. i'm joined by lind gasparello, by joe mathieu of pus on xm angeorge wilson of whur-96.3 fm. it is just by chance that we have so many people on the rad here today.
6:14 am
it is much more portable than television and flexible. it does things for peop who listen to it. if you listen to rio, your mindorks. you fill in. heainted pictures. television and the supporters of television program, intends to answer all the questio. in someays, television is a little like inking. less fun, butt does suspend anxiety. talk about televion. >> i want to give a sho out to our grt viewers that are on blic, educational, and gornmental access programs, and my first is going to the state college of penylvania. they havbeen longtime viewers of us, and i really think they have carried ourhow, and i would ke to say hello to you. >>alking about saying hello, can we say hello to the internationa problems consulti the president.
6:15 am
we would rather say gdbye to a lot of the internation problems cononting the presidt. >> but that is not that easy. in the oldays, someone would ask me how you get out of something,nd i would say ships and planes are a gd way,ut itay not be that easy anymore, although the brits had a great history of walkinaway from problems. theyalked out of paltine. it walked out of india, an walkedut of -- >> it ems that is nothat is going to hpen to us. >> whye have this enormou tention being paid to what is going on with health care, very domestic issue- in fact, an issu which perplexes mh of the world, whdoes not see what the probleis. they all havsome sort unersal system if theyre industalized countries, but very different stems,o they really do not see the problem. i knowhen i'm aoad, people ask what is goi on.
6:16 am
is n a big deal, the healt care system. but while we a so preoccupied, what is happening abroa? there are little incations that this are moving. the russn prime ministerent to -- begourardon. the israeli prime minter, netanyahu, wt to see people and hers in russiao try to persuadehem to stop selling anti-aircraft devices and gs to iran. thisuggests may be that israel real is going to try t attack on the nuclear facilities there. what do u think? >> this is a big month for iran. presidentbama has given them a deadli. basicay, september. you either assurus that you are not involved in the
6:17 am
militarization -- military nuclear station of your program, and we will rewd you with a great opening, or we wil impose very stri sanctions on you. and it h not been a very satisfacry responserom iran so f. they have -- ght now, th have been coming up with proposals and overtures to assure us ba things may t be as bad as we think. we do not know what those are yet, but at the same point, there is atalemate with the international atomic energy agency. they just cannot get the kind of verification that they need to sure t world thairan is not involved i a military program. >> do you think there is going be a unilaral israeli attack on nuclear facilits in iran? >> i do not pretend to know one
6:18 am
waor the other. i'd love i -i think is really -- israel as ving that threat in the air, t i do believe the stories surroundin iran d a career with regard to nuclear proliferation will be very quickly eclipsed by what is happeng in afgnistan, at least terms of the news flow and what wwill be obsessing ov later in the sean. we get through this health care debate may baround thanksgiving. afghanian and paktan will be e number one story and the number one concern for thi white house. we obsess over iran and north korea, but it is hd toispute that the greatest concern right now is that border along afghanistan and pakian. the prospectf sending more troops into afghanistan will be a huge story in th country, something theresident nee to make a decision on, and som fear that thencrease of the u. presence in afghanistan will push the insurgency across that border into pakistan, the government is alread unstable air, a they have nus. that is something tha scares me
6:19 am
more than what i'm hearing fro these other nations. >> if you look at iran on the question of afgnistan, you certnlyave to consider the world wi implications of the unilateral attack if israel were to do something toran or attend to doomething. the implications to me are absolutely chiing. therore, i do not think it is going to occ. i'm more concerned with afghanistan and this big queson about the number of troops that would ultimately be ere and how that plays domestically. will ople here be cheering for increastroops in afghantan? i do not thi that is going happen. >> i tnk it is hard for people to understanthe sort of asymmetrical warfare, why w take so ma casualties, and there is no y where you can saweave one. >> i thinkhat wouldbe questioned. weut a few more troops in, does that whei
6:20 am
>> mos americans cannot define viory. the white hoe has not clearly articulated that. eight years in, you have the general and hisdvisers saying it could be another 10. >>t is true, but weavelso had secretary gates saying that weill not abandon them. he sd that we areot going to leave afghanistan in the lurch. did that once aftethe russian war, and it is a very differensituation. it is a veryivotal area to secu. it is just that securing a ia way that we want to secure it will takso long, and iust do not ink we have the stomach to do that. >> we have two wars, too. we he the war against the taliban and anacostia -and al qaeda, bute also have thear against the growth ofopulism. that is going to go on yway. >>'m glad you mentioned that.
6:21 am
as you were speaking, i was thinking about this year's harvest, and i do not know ho much opium is coming out of that ea, but i have a sneaking suicion it has ireased. if so, we are talking abt more death and devastation, so you cannot really ntioned this area without talking abt narcotics. >> just getting back to iran, both iran andfghanistan have also been loyal by-elecons. they have n convince people thathey are free and fair, s there's a lot of unrest ju among people who otherwi we woulbe able to -- >> obamais in a very in difficult position that he has to deal th two peop of dubioulection attention in iran and in afghanistan, an yet, he is goingo he to deal with tm. unlesshere is a runofin afghanistan, d that ll not
6:22 am
be any more fr or will be paid anthis one has been. and maybe we are too anxious to have eleions. r enthusiasm for democracy ru beyond our cception of the ability to have effective democracy. first stage is elections, and the second stage is to give som pluraly that will keep the democry democratic. >>hen i was listening to the president is past week before a joint session of congress, had to sit and think, how long will it beefore he is back here before anotr address to convince lawkers that need to send te of thousandmore troops to afghanist? >> i think tt is going to happen versoon. i would imine that even sometime this fall, he is going tohave to make another appearance before the congress. >> comin back home t related to that part of theorld, there is t climate bill, ao known as the ergy bill, which has
6:23 am
passedhe hse to e satisfacon of all sorts of divers constituencs and t the eat annoyance of all rts of diverse constuencies and which now leaders ithe senate. i have been wonring about at partilar bill. when y talk to tm outside the chamber, th talk abo their concern f the cmate, and othersay maybe it is a little hokey, but it emso me right now that in the senate, where the delay actually occurs, that this might be bill that does not make it out. >> i was just readingn one of the political publicationabout how it is ing to impact agriculture and h the secretary ofgriculture is running arou saying that the ice of diesel is gng up, but there will be all these benefits. i do not thi thatanybody is a mood to hr about anything that is going to increase the ze of the federal payt when the federagovernment is in
6:24 am
severeerrible deficit. i will be surpred if this came out of the sate, and i think it comes dn to a case of salesmanship. we are talkingbout cap and trade. most people have no idea what at means, yet you hear the republican ldership, in the house, for insance, refring to it asancy pelosi's tax d spend god killing plaed. i remeer that, and i think when pple think about what this debate is, it is not rribly informed, and thehite house has too back to the dring board on salesmanship. >> there is a complex ambivalence in the indtry about this. some have signed on the electn utilities selectively have signed on after not liking it itially, a they got wha they wanted. so you start looking at those
6:25 am
who signed on to se what in this bill is appealing to them. i like the one outf chicago who said carbo taxes would be much simpler and cheaper, but we have to go this route. that isot a very convincing argument. >> i was just thinking back to it is also at a timerverybody is worri about more job losses. thisas been recovery -- a jobls recovery. i think at e point they were trying to sell the fact that ere would be green jobs that would be created, and a t of people would be,nd it has just hit the ick wall of the other side, so we are comin out a wash on someing. >> the habitle to explain what the green jobs ar -- they have never been able to expin what the green js are. and then there's a sort of not
6:26 am
doing thebvious, or are they ing green to avoid going nuclear, which is a rather appealing prospect. >> there was a green jobs czar a couple weeks agoho was going to explain that. >> he turned red and exploded. it is time for high notes and lotus. >> i'm so sorry this so many schoolchilen did not get a chance to watch the presint because it was a really enaring and i think important speech for kids toear. >> iill stay low. a pastor from arizo made ne this week when the papers revealed that he delivered a sermon that said "i hate barack obama. i don't fit his polics. i hate the man barack obama, and i'm praying for hiseath." it's certainly shocked a lot of us who heard an enofhe clock talkinlike this. we later found out heas taser of lasapril in a scuffle with rder patrol, and i srikes me
6:27 am
they could have incrsedhe wattage onhat a littleit, and that may have lped him. >> instead of happy talk about the economy recovering, recd numbers people are facing foreclosure, unemployment continues to soar, so i would ve to see this as an overa will. in spi of lots of rhetoric. my queion is whe are the jobs, anhow can you say ople's houses? >> how did you fee about the president's speech to children? >> i thought it was aood speech, and there's no rson why people could not haveen it. is almts a people areaving it cant hear these men. >> your daughters to young, but she had been older, would you have been pleased >for her to hear i> of course, this is the esident of the ited state thpresident has the right to talk to sdents, has historically, and shouldn the future. >> somof the democracy loving opponts of the president
