hey. you might remember this. monday night, i mentioned that a man right here in the valley, about 30 miles from here, went bankrupt collecting beanie babies. [ light laughter ] this guy spent $100,000, his life savings, collecting beanie babies, because one day he thought his collection would become so valuable that it would pay for his children's college education. [ light laughter ] well, he was interviewed on the news the other night. now he says he realizes his mistake. he should have invested in cabbage patch kids. that's where -- [ laughter ] that's wre the money -- of course! this is why -- [ applause ] that's why you need an investment guy. [ light laughter ] well, it was on this date in 1909 that the u.s. government bought its first plane from the wright brothers at a cost of $31,000. and you can still see that plane today. five times a day it's used by southwest to go between burbank and vegas. [ light laughter ] why can't we offer this same deal to the mayor of san diego? this could be our way out of this problem. exactly. [ applause ] well, more problems for -- san diego mayor bob filner. an eighth woman has now come forward and accused him of unwanted sexual advances. first of all, do they really have to specify unwanted? [ laughter ] look at this guy. look at this guy's picture, all right? [ laughter ] isn't every sexual advance unwanted from that guy? is there anybody asking for that? no. no.

[ cheers and applause ] another story. this new pope continues to surprise people. seems like a wonderful man, this new pope. sunday on his way home from brazil, pope francis said it was not his job to judge gays. he says that's what the tony awards are for. [ laughter ] so i think that's -- [ applause ] i think that's, you know, really good. ♪ that's really good. you know, i was watching the discovery channel the other night, and it had this fascinating show about ants. did you know an ant can lift 20 times their own weight? 20 times. it used to be only five times their own weight, but then alex rodriguez told them about a clinic in florida, and now they can really -- [ laughter ] now they can really lift 20 -- [ applause ] well, that's -- the big major league baseball rumor is that alex rodriguez may soon be facing a serious penalty for steroid use. either a lifetime ban from the sport or a trade to the

[ applause ] well, in other -- in other sports news -- i'll bet this is something bob costas would know about. this is kind of sad. oscar b. schectman. you know who he is? anybody know that name? he is the first player in nba history to ever score a basket in an nba game. he passed away tuesday at the age of 94. great. now the lakers have another spot to fill. [ applause ] oh, what else? hey, big news for o.j. simpson. nevada officials have granted him a parole. he could be out in less than four years. i understand the prison system. they really wanted him out. they just couldn't afford to feed him anymore. it's just costing too much money. [ cheers and applause ] o.j. is so fat now, his cellmate only likes him as a a friend. that's how bad. ♪ [ applause ] he is so fat, the prison guards caught his ass trying to bust out of his pants. that's how -- that's how fat. ♪ [ applause ] thank you, gentlemen. well, according to a new government report, misconduct from tsa workers has jumped more than 26% in the last three years. here's the story. >> the report found nearly 10,000 cases of misconduct since 2010. in some cases, tsa agents were found sleeping on the job. others were caught stealing from passengers and letting family and friends bypass security. one blatant incident of the misconduct was even caught on camera. where they burn on the side of their face because the sun came out for 20 minutes. >> very true. >> jay: now, the last time i saw you, you were eight months pregnant. >> i was huge. >> jay: you were -- >> i was ready to go. >> jay: you were glowing. [ laughter ] >> i was super ready to go. and it's almost two years -- he just turned 2 years a couple weeks ago. >> jay: right. >> so it was -- i mean -- >> jay: you thought you were having a girl. in fact, you were convinced. do you remember? we had this discussion. >> there was not a question in my mind that it was a girl. >> jay: what made you think it was going to be a girl? >> because it was completely different. it was a totally different pregnancy. i carried different. he felt different. it was just a girl. in my -- my mom and i were -- we knew it was a girl. >> jay: how does a girl feel? >> well, because it was an energy thing. and it just -- it was like it just -- i felt like this is a a she. and -- >> jay: yeah. >> and matt totally was like it's a boy. he knew the whole time. he was like, i think it's a a boy. and ryder the whole time was

it's a boy. and i just ignored them. and then when -- and then when i was crowning, my mom was like literally in there -- i mean, literally, like right there. [ laughter ] and my mom saw, and she goes -- and he started to come out and she goes, oh, look. she has blonde hair. >> jay: oh. [ laughter ] >> so she knew for sure. >> jay: right. >> and then sure enough, he came out and she was the first one to say it. it was more like it's a -- it's a boy! [ laughter ] it's a boy? it's a boy! it was like that. you know? fourth grandson. >> jay: had you bought all this girl stuff? >> she had a pink blanket ready to go. and it wasn't even pink. it was like the hottest pink. [ light laughter ] it was like the most excited pink on the planet. it was -- it was -- was, you know. but my brother just had a baby girl ten days ago. so we -- we got our first girl in the family. >> jay: okay. >> yeah, so it's very exciting. >> jay: let me ask you now. did you have a girl name ready to go? >> i did. >> jay: yeah. did you have a guy name -- you didn't have a boy name ready to go? >> no, it took us a while. it took us a while. and then we realized we wanted to name him bing after my grandfather. and matt's mum's maiden name is bingham. >> jay: oh, that's cool. >> so it was kind of like a a family name. so we went. >> jay: that works out. >> and we went in that direction. >> jay: so you're over in london. did you follow the whole royal baby thing? were you into that? >> that was insane, actually. you can't help but follow it, because it's on every news channel, like -- that's all you saw for about, you know -- i mean, that was the longest labor on news. >> jay: yeah. >> i mean, it literally was full coverage. >> jay: had you ever met the royal couple? >> no, no, no. unfortunately. but, you know, prince william and prince harry actually stayed in our house in colorado when they were kids. >> jay: really? >> yeah. and i remember, we were all in

l.a., and they were staying with their mom at the time. and we get this phone call at the house, and the phone rang. and you know, somebody answered it, and my dad gets to the phone, and sure enough, it was -- i think it was prince william calling my dad to ask if he could use the atvs. >> jay: oh, the four-wheelers. >> yeah, the four-wheeler things. and he called and hello, this is prince william. and my dad -- you know, our family is just like -- and my dad i remember he got off the phone and he goes, "that's a a really well-raised boy." >> jay: yeah. >> it was pretty cool. [ applause ] that's as close as i've gotten. >> jay: if prince william had called me and said can i have one of your cars, i would go no f'ing way. ♪ [ cheers and applause ] >> jay: welcome back. talking with kate hudson. i read that your mom and kurt are selling their house. i saw this in the paper. >> oh, yeah. that was really sad. really sad. >> jay: you grew up -- >> we grew up in this house, yeah. and my mom actually bought it before she had us. so she's had it a long time. and we lived in it for i guess the first five years of our lives. >> jay: okay. >> or my life. and she just sold it. and it's actually the house i met kurt in for the first time. so it was -- it's like it's one of those houses.

it's one of those houses where you have the kind of memories where i remember seeing this guy walk into our house. >> jay: right. >> and i was like, mom, there's this guy. the new guy. [ laughter ] >> jay: a lot of uncles coming in and out. >> yeah. who is this new best friend, mom? no, but i remember him really vividly, because he wore these glasses, and he was so full of life. >> jay: kurt russelly. >> very kurt russelly, kind of like actiony. and that was it. he sort of kept coming over to the beach house. kept coming over. and before you knew it -- >> jay: when did mom finally go, well, this is the new guy? >> i don't think she's asked yet. [ laughter ] >> jay: wow. >> she is still working on it. >> jay: it takes a while. wow. >> 30 years. i think she is almost ready. no, it was -- it was a good -- it was a good i'd say -- we

knew within the first six to eight months. >> jay: okay. >> that it was, you know -- because i also met my brother for the first time in that house. >> jay: oh, okay. >> kurt's son. and that was about i'd say nine months in or something. >> jay: yeah, yeah. >> yeah. and we were a quick -- quick, happy family. >> jay: yeah, okay. hey, nice job. very funny on the larry david movie "clear history." >> thank you. >> jay: tell me about this. how did this come together? larry is very quirky. larry david. >> yeah. larry is pretty quirky. i guess -- it came together. larry just decided to do a a movie, and it's not -- it's not the same as "the larry david show." >> jay: right. >> it's a different concept. >> jay: but it's still larry. >> it's still larry. and he just called and asked if i would come play jon hamm's wife in it. >> jay: right. >> and it's all improv. it's not scripted at all. for me that was just -- >> jay: so you make up the lines when you get there. >> basically.

here's a to b and make it up as you go along. and i am such a huge larry david fan, it was a a no-brainer. and that's kind of how i started when i was younger, was improv. that was my thing. that's what i kind of wanted -- >> jay: you shot at -- it takes place at martha's vineyard. did you shoot at -- >> no, we shot in boston. >> jay: that's my hometown. i love boston. >> you do. >> jay: is that your first time spending time there? >> no, i've shot three movies in boston now. i love it there. i'm a big pats fan. >> jay: it's the funniest place in the world. [ cheers ] the funniest, quirkiest people are in boston. >> they are quirky. they are definitely -- they're definitely a -- a -- >> jay: yeah. you think you're a big sta! you come in here like you're a a big sta! yeah, i'm a big star. >> you look wicked hot. >> jay: yeah, wicked hot. so tell people what the movie is about. >> the movie is about -- okay. well, i mean, it's kind of -- it's a little, know -- it's a a long one.

but basically, larry david and jon hamm owned a car company together. >> jay: right. >> and he had this -- jon hamm's idea was to have an electric car called the howard. >> jay: right. >> larry david thinks it's a a horrible idea. >> jay: gets fired. >> sells all his shares. he goes. and he is the laughing -- aren't you in this movie? >> jay: no, i'm not in this movie. >> hold on a second, i think you are in this movie. >> jay: no, i would know. >> isn't there a little clip of you in this movie? >> no, no, no. i'm not in this movie. >> oh, interesting. >> jay: no. [ laughter ] >> and so basically, he gets fired. and then his whole life falls apart. and he's the laughing stock of america. >> jay: goes to take revenge. >> yeah, because the car -- he's revolutionary. and now he takes revenge and he basically wants to destroy jon hamm's life. >> jay: and he falls in love with you. >> well, he thinks he can make me fall in love with him and steal me. >> jay: jon hamm. explain what's happening in this clip. >> this is -- we get into a a argument.

>> hello, jay. >> jay: it's good to see you. and welcome back. let's get right to it. you have some breaking news. >> well, i don't know if it's breaking news or not. >> jay: right. >> they're reporting that major league baseball, as we tape this, is prepared to suspend a-rod for life. >> jay: for life? >> that would be -- that would be if he does not accept what i think they'd be content with, which is to be suspended for the rest of this year, and all of next year, and not appeal it. but since he's saying, and his representatives are saying they'll appeal any suspension of any type. what baseball doesn't want is for him to be on the field playing while this thing is playing itself out so if they suspend him for life, under basically -- without making it too complicated, there's a a provision -- >> jay: right. >> -- where the commissioner can act in the so-called best interests of baseball. so it wouldn't be just for drug violations. it would be for a variety of

other offenses connected to it. then they could keep him off the field until the appeal would be heard, likely after the season is over. >> jay: okay. wow. >> so, what i really think will happen is that eventually -- this has kind of been negotiating technique. and that presented with the evidence, just like ryan braun was presented with the evidence and saw that he really couldn't refute it. presented with the evidence, they'll wind up accepting a a lengthy ban, but not a a lifetime ban. >> jay: is it safe to say that major league baseball turned a a blind eye in the '90s and now they're finally getting serious? is that a fair statement? >> that -- that is a fair statement. it was obvious. not just the body types, but the changes in statistics. the quantum leap in statistics that just didn't make any sense. it was obvious something was going on in the '90s and then at the turn of the century. and, when they finally got religion on it, so to speak. when congress got in on the

act, and jose canseco told his story, and ken caminiti -- who has since passed away -- told his story about steroid use. and a lot of the players then kind of turned on their own leadership, which has since moved out and been replaced by michael weiner and said, "look, we want a clean game." [ light laughter ] >> jay: yeah. >> no, not anthony weiner. [ laughter ] >> jay: this is the good weiner! >> right. [ laughter ] >> jay: this is not the evil weiner. not all weiners are bad. [ laughter ] [ audience ohs ] >> so, anyway -- the new leadership of the player association seems more willing, not to roll over for the owners or the commissioner, but to say, "look, we understand that this is a a problem, and if there's a a legitimate charge against any of these players, we want to help clean up the game."

>> jay: yeah. let's talk about this thug culture now, that you have with aaron hernandez. again, the same -- what was it, 30-something arrests since the super bowl? >> there have been -- more, more than 30 arrests of nfl players since the super bowl. it's not confined to the nfl. and these guys -- a guy like aaron hernandez, obviously, doesn't represent anything close to the average nfl player. it's an -- it's an aberrant case. however, there are too many guys in sports that -- that lean toward criminality. too many. and a lot of them are recruited. i mean, where do they come from? they come into the nba from college. they come into the nfl from college. so institutions of higher learning are actually recruiting guys who either have criminal backgrounds, or are at risk of becoming criminals, all in the pursuit of victory. and then teams take a chance on them. and a certain percentage of

them, it backfires. >> jay: do you think in previous decades a guy like aaron hernandez would not have been on the patriots? do you think -- "oh, look --" is it so our competition -- the stakes are so high that if i don't -- if i don't have this guy on my team i may have to go against him. >> that's part of it. like, a guy like aaron hernandez had first-round ability. and a lot of teams after doing background checks passed on him. the patriots, with -- with fair reason, have a reputation of having a culture led by tom brady and other veteran players, where if guys who might be a little bit on the edge come to them they're influenced positively by the atmosphere in the locker room. and they think, and it's been true with other players, that they've been able to get those guys to tow the line. but hernandez was not one of those guys. ray lewis, who himself was involved in an investigation of a double homicide -- >> jay: right. >> -- he was not the perpetrator, but he was involved, and he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, and then went on to have a long nfl career.

like, 10 or 12 years ago, ray lewis said something very telling. he said, "you know, they tell you to stay away from thugs. but then you better keep out of the huddle, because there's at least two or three thugs in every huddle." >> jay: right. >> you know, and so i think that's really the problem to the extent that it's a problem. it doesn't represent 5%, or even 10%, but it represents enough to be concerned about. and when i talked about a gun culture last year in -- during our coverage in the nfl, a lot of people misunderstood that as a gun control thing or an anti-second amendment thing. >> jay: right, sure. >> and part of the blame for that is on me, because i had a a short period of time, and maybe, i didn't make my point as clearly as i should have. but i was not talking about people exercising responsibly their lawful, legitimate second amendment rights. i was talking about young guys, professional athletes, many of them in their 20s, testosterone-fueled, hepped up on who knows what else.

and in a certain kind of environment where impulse control and aggression can be a a problem and -- yep. i mean -- pacman jones with an entourage, goes into a strip club. they start firing guns in the air, and some poor guy winds up in a wheelchair for life. what is that about? that has nothing to do with karl malone, who used to be a a spokesman for the nra, going hunting. >> jay: right. >> it has nothing to do with you or me if we choose to, having a gun to protect our home and our family. if you think you've gotta go out to dinner with a glock stuck in your waistband, you've got a problem. >> jay: yeah, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] >> nothing -- >> jay: especially when you're 6'9." >> yeah. nothing good ever comes of this. even if the guns are legally owd. all you have to do is do a web search. athletes and guns. and look at all the tragedies and folly that comes of it, and how infrequently an athlete

having a gun actually ever diffused a dangerous situation, or used it for legitimate self defense. that was the point i was trying to make. not an anti-second amendment point. >> jay: now, you won an emmy for your sandusky interview. and there was more news on that today. i guess three penn state officials -- they're being indicted or they're going on trial? >> yeah, basically, there's a a grand jury preceding that just said ere's enough evidence to take it to trial, which was -- no surprise to anybody. spanier, curley, and schultz, the administrators, who will go on trial. but the main figure to the average person, the main figure is still other than sandusky himself, joe paterno, who has since passed away. and i really think that there is now some legitimate doubt. i don't know where the truth is. but there's some legitimate doubt about the extent of paterno's involvement. the pat storyline became, everybody, paterno included, knew pretty much what sandusky was up to. and they all kind of conspired to cover it up to protect the

image of the football program at penn state. >> jay: and you don't think that's true? >> i think that paterno was negligent. i think he should have recognized what was going on because the warning signals were there. but, having read the freeh report, and then having read some of what's been put out to refute it, i don't buy the idea that he was actively involved in a cover up. >> jay: well, i don't -- you know, i know -- you talk to a lot of old guys, 80-year-old guys, it's a a different culture. they go, "these guys do what? come on!" i mean, it's not the open society we grew up in. and they just don't think that goes on. >> they're uncomfortable with it. and he did -- he did technically, what he was supposed to do. >> jay: right. >> it was the minimum, though. he reported it. but what we wish he had done, those who admired what the bulk of joe paterno's life was about, wish he had done, and what paterno himself said shortly before he died, in hindsight, he said, "i wish i had done more." he should have followed up.
