the sun is about to take over this morning but snow on the way for your forecast as well. we'll get to your forecast in a moment but, first, we begin with breaking news overnight. an officer-involved shooting in canton sends one to the hospital and a canine officer to the emergency vet clinic. it happened as that officer responded to a burglary. meg shaw is live. what's the latest this morning? >> reporter: behind me, you can see it's still an active investigation. i want to step out of the way. we have seen a couple of minutes ago two gentlemen walking into the store with police. clearly, it's still an active investigation here. i spoke with the store manager. he is not sure if the store will be open today. canton police tell me that the canine is at the stark county veterinarian clinic. canine jethro was hit they several times this morning when

with officers it happened at fishers food at winston cup a.m. canine jethro was off the lead when he was confronted by the suspect who fired at him several times. the suspect fled on foot while firing several more shots at police. later, that person was captured, hidden in a yard, with a gunshot wound in the leg. he was taken to the hospital. as for canine jethro, he was taken to the vet clinic. he has several gunshot wounds, has been with the department for about two years and he is three years old. of course, we'll stay on top of his recovery and give you any new details once i get them. live in canton, meg shaw, news channel 5. >> we are certainly pulling hard for jethro.

he was coughing up a lot of blood. he was bleeding like crazy. i was worried, she was worried. we were worried about him. >> reporter: minute later, cleveland police made the ditches, putting into action these quick clot kits. >> the first aid kits that we have into these cars are being invaluable. >> the training was critical in saving mr. terrell at the scene of course we were taught how to use tourniquets, the quick clot gauze and things like that and beyond that, we were taught cpr. atwater who witnessed the new clot kits in action say they gave ems a better chance to save the patients because police are always first to get to the scene. >> that's life save, quicker, helps them out more with ambulance. you don't know how long it's going to come so it stabilizes

so we are definitely understaffed right now. >> those working in the stations shutting down will be moved to other departments. this might not be the last of the closures. station 2 may also shut down because there simply is not enough money. headlines from around ohio. a hunting trip turned tragic for one man after he died from an accidental gunshot wound. authorities found the man's body thursday in a field in portage town sh. the hancock sheriff office is not releasing the man's name until everyone in his family has been notified another tragic story, this time in cincinnati where police are investigating the drug overdose of a mother and father at a cincinnati children's hospital. staff found the couple on the bathroom floor of their seven month old child's hospital room with heroin syringes. the mother died and the little girl's father is now under arrest. according to a gofundme page, the couple had surgery to reconstruct her trachea. she is said to be doing okay.

in just a moment. first, we begin with breaking news overnight. an officer-involved shooting in canton sends one to the hospital and a canine officer to the emergency clinic. it happened as officers were responding to an active burglary. meg shaw is now live in canton on top of the story. what's the latest, meg? >> nick, i'm here at the store where police just wrapped up their investigation inside. they are now working to open the investigation. the canine in this cape, canine jethro was shot three times during this incident when he was responding with officers to this burglary. it all happened just after 1:00 a.m. here at the grocery store at fisher food on harrison avenue. police tell me that the canine jethro was off his lead, searching this store when he was confronted by the suspect.
