off with the man that has all of the information to stay safe and warm. meteorologist jason nicholas. it is snowing and the temperatures in the single digits. >> triple threat. world, wind and snow and seeing that across all of northern ohio. the snow heaviest across some spots. what is happening at the power of five network. traffic is moving okay but we have the snow showers and lightning up in downtown as the main lake-effect snow moves to the east. 13 in downtown cleveland and you add the wind and we have wind chills already at or below 0 and they will continue to drop and become the major here is your band of lake- effect snow. along the shore west of cleveland you are okay and this band eventually does make contact northeast of cleveland and talking about the far

county near euclid and menner to lake county and willoughby and east lake and 271 where the roads meet and undoubtedly issues there with snow on the roadways. menner to kirkland and seeing the snow for the last several hours and an additional one to three in the next couple of hours and more through the overnight. same deal southern sections of lake county and northern geauga. this band has been persist. moving to western sections of ashtabula. we got lake snow warnings out to tomorrow afternoon. three to five across the west and mostly eastern cuyahoga county and a winter advisory south and west of cleveland. 10 to 15 degrees below zero. i expect widespread school delays tomorrow morning. temperatures falling from the lower teens to the upper single

what does it look like outside with the snow falling. john rutter is live in storm tracker 5, john, what is happening. >> reporter: well, jason i don't know if mark johnson saw storm sweeper 5 but a few residents can use it. that snow whipping around and several cars off of the roadway. a car off of the roadway. to the left and two cars to the the right. the snow has picked up. look at the roadway on i-90 east and o dot trucks on the highway in front of us. this is why o dot had the extra drivers from cuyahoga to lake county to take care of the snow. we saw o dot trucks and the snow starting to pile up for slow along i-90 and we are moving at 30 miles per hour and this is a 70 miles per hour

things dicey here along i-90. and that is what is going on. megan hickey is here and how are things look for you? >> reporter: john, we counted more than a dozen cars in the ditch on i-90 west. several semis stranded and completely helpless as them out. p.m. on i-90. the traffic inching along for several miles. eastbound with slow going with slippery conditions and delays. here is video of the cars standing around nearly 180 degrees near menner and a semispun out causing delays. drivers are telling me they are taking extra care to watch out for the passenger cars on the road. >> watching for them a lot because you can control your speed better because you have a lot more weight on the road and

and fired. this is not the first time they feel they have been targeted. the police are stilling looking for men in howard's murder. >> we can't get no answers because he won't turn himself in. my plea is that somebody knows when he is and somebody turn >> reporter: major's grandfather tells me his son was hit by a car that ran off in front of the house a few weeks ago. you can see a police car sitting out in front. i have seen several drive by in the last few hours. district police officers will be getting this help in this area some very special attention moving forward. newschannel 5. police have made another arrest in how ward's death.

charges of aggravated murder. but again police need your help finding donnell lindsey. you see him here. if you know anything call police. developing now. an ohio police officer is dead and police say they have the man that killed him locked up. the tragedy started with a dramatic 911 call last night. a woman claimed her ex- boyfriend herschel jones was armed and looking to kill police. 20 minutes later the body of danville officer catrel was found shot to death. his weapon and police cruiser missing. jones was found a few hours later and after a foot chase he was found. he has a lengthy record. the danville tragedy highlights a growing fear among law enforcement. ambushed shootings. deputies are being prepared for unprovoked attacks. bob jones got a look at how the

instructors monitored shootings across the county. >> they tayler it based on incidents where police officers were ambushed. the scenarios are scary but officers know that any one of them can happen at any time. scenario one, officers are eating at restaurant when a gunman opens fire on them. they point laser guns on a wall and to practice awareness and moment and aim at the right target. scenario two, officers fire live rounds at cardboard cutouts after coming attack from somebody in the crowd and three, police officers in the cruiser and gunmen come after them and they are forced to make quick moves. >> the probabilities of officers being ambushed is a high probability. there is ambush trainings

and they are not just relying on trainings. kristen volk continue the coverage and learning how the officers return home to their families. >> it is about technology, training and tips at the willoughby police department and as officers grapple with the loss of the police officer they are paying close attention to what is going on in their own city to make sure that no copycat incidents happen there. >> in case that one emergency where that officer is not responding, we know where they are at and we can respond. what you are looking at is sophisticated gps system that shows the exact location of every police cruiser in willoughby. >> it will show them traveling at that moment. >> and lieutenant jim shuts tells me if he are traveling to a particular location officers that looks like this. >> before he steps out of his car, he is aware that there may

>> at that address, officers know that man living there has psychiatric issues and combative and has violent tendencies. we share information throughout the county on armed robberies and drug investigations and assaults and a lot of crimes that need to be solved or need to be looked into. >> and information like this that willoughby p d says they get, a picture of a bank robbery suspect in bedford. the incident happened friday. now, they are on the lookout for this man and in the age of social media, lieutenant schultz tells me it is a huge help to know what is going on in the community good or bad. we utilize our own social media, our facebook and twitter accounts to provide information not only for our officers but our citizens to keep them safe and to help us do our job better. willoughby officers also

one of the five americans freed is back home in boston. >> matthew is the youngest of the visitors and spent 40 days as a hostage and we are learning more about the secret negotiations that led to his and the other prisoners released. three of them are now in germany getting medical attention. one is washington post reporter jason rezaian that got the meet the u.s. official that got to secure his release in geneva and that reporter was held on months. >> he is doing okay. mostly been neglected for a long time. and that was his brother there. the other two prisoners in germany tonight are amir hekmati and pastor saeed abedini. in exchange the u.s. releasing

violating u.s. sanctions and others. another group of americans was reportedly kidnapped in iraq over the weekend and security forces are carrying out a house to house search to find them. the iraqi government says three americans kidnapped from their interpreter's home. they were taken from their car enroute to the airport. differing accounts. the u.s. is working with iraqi authorities to find them. happening across the country. people are remembering and honoring the legacy of dr. martin luther king, jr. a look at the flame that remains lit and burns in front of dr. king's tomb in atlanta symbolizing the effort to remember the icon's dream. and being remembered across the country and that includes people in cleveland. dr. martin luther king day has

john rutter as well. there is is a look downtown. notice a difference and we will take a look at the sky cam and show you what is happening right now. the same shot. there you go. a wider picture. snow showers out there and they are relatively light. we are seeing that in downtown cleveland. take a look at lorraine. not much in lorraine and not much in the way of snowfall. cold but no snow. different in menner. we still have snow and kind of a blocking our view there. believe it or not, a few snowflakes over the sky cam wooster. a big difference even with sunshine breaking through the clouds. that just goes to show you lake effect varies from one community to the other. teens. elsewhere nearing single digits. snow. here is downtown right here.

euclid and northeast of interstate 90 and far southwest lake county. that snow continues off of interstate 90 and through lake county and starts to break out towards madison and perry and closer to downtown and not nearly as bad. 71 and 77. won't be all of that horrible. even 271, south of 90 things are looking better. menner continuing to see snow undoubtedly getting maybe potentially three or four inches since lunchtime and that will continue. notice the snow breaking up towards thompson and snowing right now in chardin. lake snow warnings in effect. geauga county and cuyahoga through noon and three to five inches for cuyahoga additional and four to eight where squalls persist through geauga county and ashtabula. elsewhere we are talking about a wind chill advisory. wind chills tomorrow morning as kids head back to school and many head back to work.

tomorrow morning. wind chills. air temperatures about 0 to 5 above. brutally cold tonight and tomorrow morning. cleveland and akron and canton around ten and falling off 7 to 8 degrees. notice the snow we are tracking here. cleveland, akron north and east. not talking about anything west of 71. good news for folks outside of the snow belt but if you are under a band of snow, you can see several inches by tomorrow morning. it looks though by tomorrow afternoon, we say adios to that lake-effect snow. total accumulation within the county warning, geauga county and ashtabula four to eight inches. 18 tomorrow and morning snow showers and chills to 10 to 15 below. seven-day forecast forecast. lower 20s for wednesday and a few snow showers. 30 on thursday and look at

the man shot and killed by a police officer. the story that has everyone talking. the freezing cold weather and the snowfall not over yet. >> no. the lake-effect snow and it is cold. notice the showers in downtown cleveland and the big cavs warriors game, temperatures in the lower teens and single digits when you head back home. i don't think snow will be a big issue for downtown cleveland but if you are heading out for the east you will want to take that into consideration. it is mainly northeast of downtown euclid and moves and hits southern lake counties hard and continues to northern sections of geauga county. within this band it is persisting. we can see an additional one to three inches of snow by 7 or 8:00 tonight. keep that in mind. 90 undoubtedly slick travel and

the lake shore near perry getting a break and madison and geneva and more snow for geauga county. that is where the snow warnings are. otherwise a wind chill advisory in effect for tomorrow morning. i think the windchill advisory believe it or not will likely cause more school closings. we have a school closing -- closings on the bottom of the screen. jefferson local in ashtabula county has been called off. we are getting school closings and continue to get those for the rest of the snow and also newschannel 5 at 11:00. hour by hour tonight. lows in the upper single digits and cold with that lake-effect snow. keep in mind roadways will be slick across the east and

in snow tracker 5 and covering northern ashtabula. >> know, we are at a standstill. we were heading north towards route 2 and you can see not moving and that's the theme of traffic that we have encountered as we got off of i- 90 and hopped on to 306. as we were on i-90 i snapped the pictures of the semitruck pulled off of the side of the road and calling it quicks and a couple more at rest stops. traffic grinding to a halt. you can see we are moving northbound. 20 to 35 miles per hour on the highway and moving at a snail's pace now, two to three miles per hour in mentor. but traffic backed up because of the snow. we will keep you update on the

concerned about between now and even through the overnight hours and early tomorrow. for continuing to see the squalls. notice downtown cleveland not bad. heading in and out of the city. shouldn't be that bad. once you head northeast. that's where things get tricky and where the snow is piling up. east lake willoughby and menner and down towards my highland heights and southwest lake county. that's where the most snow is. menner has been seeing snow for several hours so we could easily see two to four inches since lunchtime and we will add to that over the next couple of hours as the squall is persisting. that is what we say with lake- effect snow. southern lake county and northern geauga county and the chimney of geauga county near thompson. these county. geauga county and ashtabula snow warnings until noon tomorrow.
