investigated by the fbi. the 55-year-old, julio pino has been on the fbi's radar since 2014. tonight we're digging deeper. pino is no stranger to controversy. >> in 2011 newschannel5 reported he was seen and heard shouting death to israel during the speech of an israeli diplomat on kent state's campus. megan hickey has been digging into pino's past and joins us live from the cleveland fbi office. >> what have you learned at this hour? >> reporter: the regional director of the antidefamation league says she has received several complaints from parents and students over the years, and she said news of the fbi's investigation came as no surprise to her. >> i've been familiar with professor pino and the hate speech he's been spewing for many years. >> reporter: strong words from cleveland's antidefamation lead on tenured professor julio pino. the adl pointed to complaints

outspoken professor praised a palestinian suicide bomber in this campus newspaper column. newschannel5 covered another incident in 2011 when pino was seen and heard shouting death to israel during an on-campus lecture from an israeli diplomat. today his anti-israeli stance is evident on his personal facebook page where he has long defended his right to free speech. >> no, i have not violated any u.s. laws that i'm aware of, or that anyone has informed me of. >> reporter: an? that gray tells me his comments were legal. >> in his occasions professor pino's case, it wasn't right and it wasn't moral and it wasn't just. >> reporter: in a 2014 open letter pino wrote that he cursed the friends of israel more than the israelis. students on ratemyprofessor.com posted mixed reviews but roughly half of students wrote that they were in some way insulted by the professor's

i also reached out to the aclu of ohio. the spokesman said in a statement that the first amendment exists to protect the speech that others might find controversial but couldn't comment specifically on pino's case. >> can i help you? >> yes, i'm a starting. i've been waiting 2 manipulate 38 seconds. >> that's precious time. now city administrators are taking steps to make sure it never happens again. all 911 calls come in at the facility where derek wallser is. >> reporter: the false is only four months old. it's had its share of issues but issues the city said they are fixing. >> cleveland 911, what is your emergency?

fewer people to answer them. 911 call volumes in this new communications center are up more than 50% from the same time last year all while the city is demanding staff work overtime. that's after cleveland started hamming all their calls directly. >> a lot of people were calling, and they would just hear the telephone ringing and hang up and call back. (s:reporter during a tour, one commander told me they're cutting volumes with a new automated prompt that tells callers to stay on the line. 12 new police dispatchers should start in two weeks. in november we told you some callers trying to report a shooting on the city's west side waited up to four minutes for a cleveland dispatcher to answer the phone. >> oh my god, come on, cleveland. two minutes and 50 seconds, guys. >> our staffing levels are so low. >> the union president representing dispatchers for

working long shifts and six day weeks. >> i think this was a system that was implemented that wasn't thought out completely, not getting all three safety courses together and determining how they were going to implement this. >> command erika of its tells me the city is working tout kinks. >> our goal is to have 95% of the calls answered within that 15 seconds. >> are you meeting that goal? >> i don't know exactly to this date right now but normally we come very close to it. >> reporter: there are some calls that will continue to be routed through county dispatchers first. could of its tells me that includes calls that are coming from city borders as well as from downtown. that's because there's a new cell tower that has gone up for the rnc. derick waller, newschannel5. >> we just confirmed the man wanted for killing a woman in warrensville heights is now in custody. troopers arrested this man, gregory baxter, in erie county after determining he was driving a stolen vehicle.

stabbed his girlfriend, tracy bender. he's been charged with receiving stolen property and following too close. baxter will likely face homicide charges in warrensville heights. new tonight, the frantic search for two missing brothers from wisconsin ends in east cleveland. the young boys were found after they responded in their mother's call in the dayton area. police began looking for the boys last night after their father reported them missing. the boy's mother does not have custody of the children. east cleveland's mayor says a boys. >> we're just grateful to the east cleveland police department and grateful to the resident who called and within minutes we had a very concerning situation under control. custody tonight. their mother was taken to a evaluation. let's check in with chief meteorologist mark johnson. we had some flurries. >> flurries that is really about it. today.

nearby gas station and took off moments later. the victim was taken to metro health medical center with serious injuries. so if you have any information, call cleveland police. tonight akron police need your help identify ago man who robbed a family dollar at gun point. the surveillance video shows the suspect walking into that store on copley road, then pointing a gun at an employee. the worker opened the cash register and the man tack an unknown amount of money. a cleveland police officer accused of drunk driving has pleaded not guilty. 54-year-old jeer smith is charged with dui and failure to control following a traffic stop on the east side. she reportedly had a blood alcohol level near twice the legal limit. sergeant smith was placed on restricted duty pending the outcome of the case. a pack of wild dogs target a woman on her way to the bus stocht it happened in shaker heights. we've learned it wasn't the

live in shaker heights. kristin, are these dogs still on the loose? >> reporter: two out of the three, danita, are out here somewhere. police shot one of them dead this morning when that woman called the department from this area. thankfully that woman is okay. police say that they bit her coat, and that happened just after 7:30. two hours earlier police say the dogs attacked a deer, injuring it so badly that police had to shoot it. both incidents happened in the ingleside kenmore area. this man, paul, tells me he's now carrying a gun when he goes outside. this neighbor feels the same way, especially with her new puppy. >> it's a very pedestrian area, a very family friendly area, so to think these dogs are out

more worries on wall street as stocks take another beating. the dow dropped by as many as 565 points today but eventually closed down 249 points. the s & p and nasdaq also lost gains after oil prices suffered the biggest one-day drop since 70. crude oil now below $27 a barrel. that is the lowest since early 2003. meantime falling oil prices mean cheaper prices at the pump. ohio drivers on average are paying $1.64 a gallon. that is down $0.16 from last week. locally prices are about 20

gas cost $1.45 at one station on lakewood boulevard. hundreds of upcoming layoffs from two well-known employers. john kosich joins us live from our newsroom with more. >> reporter: u.s. steel and republic steel announced nearly 500 layoffs over the next few months at their lorain plant. some of those impacted workers met today to discuss their options going forward. the round table put together by u.s. senate hopeful former governor ted strickland. the workers say something needs to be done to help the steal industry much like was done to help the auto industry because jobs. >> when a union job gets lost, the odds are that a home is foreclosed on. that affect everyone in that neighborhood. each small community here loses

them with their safety forces and their schools. we need to get this message out to everyone. >> reporter: the city of lorain knows that all too well. the mayor was already projecting a nearly $2.5 million budget shortfall this year because of last year's steel layoffs with the deficit expected to grow, a move that will likely lead to city layoffs. john kosich, newschannel5. united healthcare expects to lose nearly $1 billion because of obamacare policies. the company says people who need expensive medical services are signing up during the so- called special enrollment period. insurers say many americans are using that as a lap hole to sign up only when they get sick. united healthcare says it's considering dropping out of all obamacare exchanges in 2017. a serious safety flaw could lead to a recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles. the national highway traffic

ford focus owners that the doors don't latch properly and can fly open when the vehicle is moving. the probe covers focuses from the 2012 and 2013 model years. a similar problem led to recalls of nearly half a million other ford models last year. more drivers used the ohio turnpike last year than ever before. nearly 54 million vehicles used the toll road in 2015. that tops the previous record of 52 million back in 2006. turnpike officials say low gas prices, mild weather, and an improving economy contributed to the increase of everybody using the ohio turnpike. so there we go mark johnson. >> at least it's clear and there's not much snow on it. >> there we go. >> that is a plus. >> snow is fading. i know a lot of folks freaked out after the weekend snow event. i know danita got a lot of snow. >> a lot, lot. >> i found my truck today, finally.

once this little trough goes by winds are going to shift around. so there could be an isolated lighter snow shower, perhaps upwards of an inch of accumulation overnight in the snow belt. the rest of us should dry out and clear out. currently 15 in wooster, 19 akron, 17 canton to ashtabula. here are the current windchills. still some single-digit chills. cleveland feels like 7, elyria 6. mansfield feels like 4. now let's focus on the blizzard watch for washington, d.c. and baltimore. winter storm watches in blue. winter storm warnings already issued for the mountains of west virginia. not for this stuff, okay. this is that weak trough. this is light. this is light. so where is that winter storm? here it is. here it is right now. out towards denver, colorado. let's watch it. it's going drive to the south a little bit, pick up a lot of gulf moisture. and look at this.

well, as first reported from nfl network the browns are probably going to confirm tonight that ray horton is coming back to be the new defensive coordinator. the other big story, josh gordon is looking to work his way back into the nfl. applied for reinstatement. he will have to demonstrate sustained abstinence during his suspension. gordon was suspended for a year after multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy. stay away from that stuff. moving op, the eagles will hire former cleveland browns coordinator john defilippo. while fans might worry if the cavs can win a championship
