only at your lincoln dealer. . now on good morning cleveland, winter's being felt. snow piling up and paralyzing some of our nation's biggest cities. how travelers across the world are feeling the effects this blatt, out as cavs head coach. we are looking into the sudden change in the direction the team goes from here. but first, a live look looking at our nation's capital, washington, dc, as they deal with this massive winter storm. it's a whiteout in dc.

morning as others have it country. hello, and welcome to this saturday edition of good morning cleveland. let's get to our local forecast, because unlike our friends to the east, we're not those conditions. >> right. if you have family and friends, you need to check on them all weekend long. this storm on the east coast is just revving up. they are on the light tonight is when historical snowfall will hit maryland, all the way into the dc area. now, closer to home, all we can do is pretty much watch this storm take on the quieter end. i mean, folks, if this would have tracked a little bit more toward the west, we would definitely be in ght now, quiet conditions. we are dealing with something kind of rare here. a little bit of lake effect backward. so if you're out toward the west side, erie, huron county, lorain, avon lake, olmsted,

seeing a few flurries. quickly. this is that large and in charge storm that is tracking out toward the east in northeast ohio. as you can see, an abundance of moisture and advisories are already put in place. this low pressure that's moving s raleigh-durham, north carolina, but surging with another area of low pressure that is bringing in warmer air. now, tracking into tonight, we are talking about 2 feet of lation for washington, dc. nick? >> thank you, gentleman necessary sa. now janessa. from new york to tennessee, all parts in between, the getting pummeled right now by a major snowstorm. this is video of the roads in downtown philadelphia just hours ago. the roads in several states ous this morning, leading to lots of backups and delays.

for nine deaths across the country. the snow and wind aren't until sunday. well, that east coast storm now wreaking havoc for travelers, thousands of flights being delayed or canceled, ed to leave from cleveland hopkins. that is where we find our own meg shaw this morning. she has been there all morning. what's the latest at morning, meg? >> reporter: nick, as you can imagine, if you're heading to the east coast, if you have a flight there, you might want to buckle up, because it's going to be a long a look at the departure boards. you can see so much red for all of these canceled flights. the latest one we're seeing right now is a flight out of here at 1:00 is still canceled. although we're in the clear for this storm, we still have quite a bit of winter left, of course. but the airport says they will be ready when it's rport's interim director says for the first time in years, they are fully staffed.

from the weather service to call in their staff. he says even when there's a small chance of snow, those staff members will be called in. >> that way, we'll never e we get caught with a storm and not have enough people here to deal with it. >> reporter: and as you can see behind me, it's pretty morning. we did see a little rush at the frontier line, but all of those people were heading to orlando re but to the east coast, i feel like that's where travelers are trying to go this weekend. live at hopkins, meg shaw, news we're jealous, meg. thank you so much. lot of those flights to other places go through the east. hopefully they checked cancellations ahead of time. check in this video from winter storm seen from their space satellites. just about an hour ago, scott kelly tweeting out this photo of the storm from the the blizzard is so widespread, take a look. this is an amazing image.

get at least half a foot of snow by tomorrow. our storm over yet. we'll have the latest from minutes. the shock waves still being felt this morning in basketball. a trip to the t year, first place in the entire midwestern conference midway through his second, but not enough for david blatt, who is now coach. general manager david griffin, deciding the team not good enough to win with david blu. so tyronn lue gets position. former cavalier brendan haywood saying yesterday this is a move that essentially would have been made a while ago. >> when he was in film session, coach blatt was a little intimidated at first to try to bron in film sessions. tyronn lue would step in and say that's your rotation.

because he wasn't afraid to he wasn't disrespecting, but guys started to respect tyronn lue because of that. >> blatt played college ball at princeton, then a long-the european leagues and developed a reputation as an offensive guru. he even led russia to a bronze medal in lue, however, spent 11 seasons in the nba as a player. he then was an assistant coach for both the boston celtics and l.a. lysts saying yesterday his playing career will go a long way in maintaining the respect of the cavs players. and get this. the cavs now have three head ll. in 2013, mike brown returned to the team, agreeing to a five- year, $20 million deal. we all know how that ended. he was fired after one had a three-year, $10 million contract. he was about halfway through that deal. now tyronn lue agreed to a reported three-year contract to coach the cavs.

tonight, against the chicago bulls in his head coaching debut. that's a game you can see right here on news channel 5. rta riders breathing a sigh of relief this morning after a down the light rail for several hours yesterday. someone reported a suspicious package on a train near the buckeye wood hill rapid station and a bomb-sniffing dog got a positive hit. train riders had to be diverted to buses, causing backout to be a false alarm. >> i mean, you never know these days. you always want to take precautions. people might say it's >> in this case, it was nothing. no bomb was found. rta encourages riders to always watch for suspicious activity, stressing the message, if you see something, say something. well, thank you for starting your saturday here with us. i'm nick foley. coming up this morning, a scam hitting local residents, bilking them out of their hard- earned cash.

good morning, everyone. i'm power of 5 meteorologist janessa webb. waking up, president sun is up, the complowdz are out and about today and going to be sticking around. let's talk about our highs today. slightly warmer. daytime highs into the mid to upper 20s throughout your afternoon. it gets better as we head into tomorrow. we are talking mostly sunny skies and we'll finally be above freezing. what you're going to notice throughout your afternoon is our winds. they are tracking in from north to west, about 15 to 20 miles per hour. is that brings the feels-like temperature on your skin, on your face, into the lower 20s. look at this two-day forecast for your weekend. we're going to get over this cloud coverage. you see that sunshine peeking through. make postscript you feel good inside. going into next week, we'll be talking about 40s. big changes on the way for the oscars. those changes coming in the wake of the controversy that swirled for the last week, after we learned all 20 acting

. welcome back. 8:14 this morning. canadiens are mourning this morning after two separate shootings in saskatchewan. one of the shootings happened at a high school. the building was put on lockdown, as well as a second building housing elementary school students. canadian prime minister justin trudeau addressed the shootings from the economic forum in switzerland. >> every, this is every parent's worst nightmare. community leaders have reeling. critically injured. details about the suspect and victims have not been released. college students studying at the university of virginia is being detained in north korea. the cincinnati native has been accused of engaging in a korean government. he was detained earlier this

trip. he was there on a tourist visa. and now to a new twist in flint. fema is turning down a request to declare a disaster over the city's water supply. that declaration would have opened up millions of dollars for michigan, but it's mainly used for natural disasters. mean while, two employees quality department were suspended as flint is working to make its water safe again. lead levels are so high, people can't safely use that water. we told you thursday that bubba q's in avon is collecting water to send to flint. as of last night, more than 2000 bottles have already been donated. closer to home, there are concerns about the water in sebring, in mahoning county. neighbors were told yesterday that tests found too much lead in their water. officials are telling children and pregnant women not to drink the water. ingesting too much lead can lead to life-long problems.

water in flint and sebring prompted news channel 5 to dig deeper into the testing of cleveland's water system. here's what we found in cleveland. their water comes from lake erie, which has a very low lead content level. the city tests about 300 water samples a day for lead, copper and other contaminants. the treatment process includes the use of ortho phosphate, which helps prevent potential risks associated with lead and copper found in metal pipes and fixtures. the ph of the water system is monitored daily, as well as to ensure the safety of the drinking water. and now back to that winter storm slamming states on the east coast. you are looking now live at washington, dc. pretty much a whiteout with this storm expected to hit washington, dc harder than any other region in the east coast. at least nine deaths already reported in four states. an official with the national weather service says the storm could easily cause more than $1 billion in damage.

latest from the target of the storm, washington. >> reporter: blizzard blind. blinding, whiteout conditions, heavy snow, bone-chilling winds. this morning, there are blizzard watches and warnings from dc to new york. airports in the northeast, closed. thousands of flights, canceled. >> can't wait to get out of town. >> reporter: in philadelphia, the streets are covered. a snow emergency is in effect. in dc, it's predicted to be the biggest blizzard since the 1920s. more than 2 feet of snow expected. >> it has life and death implications. >> reporter: this massive winter storm impacting more than 80 million people, left a blanket of snow in the south. it's also wreaked havoc. in kentucky, a 35-mile stretch of i-75, closed, leaving more than 3000 drivers stranded in the cold. emergency shelters are open. in the carolinas, georgia and

there have been thousands of crashes on the roadways. several people have died. >> yes, it's definitely icy. i've slid several times this morning in my dump truck. >> reporter: emergency crews have also been working around the clock to save even our four- legged friends. >> come on, milo! >> reporter: from fairfax station, virginia, this large st. bernard named milo fell through the ice in this lake. firefighters rescued the dog and warmed him up. the storm has already left hundreds of thousands of people in the dark. crews are working to restore power right now. here in dc, people have been told to stay off the streets because it is only going to get worse. kenneth moton, abc news, washington. janessa joining us now. lot of us monitoring this storm closely because we have friends and family in those areas affected right now. i've got family in dc. obviously, they are in it for the long haul. this is really almost not even a middle mark of what some of

>> no, this is just unfolding. today into tonight is when it really starts to rev up. we're seeing that area of low pressure that is moving off the coast. you can see this is new york, downtown, and i mean times square is already under -- you know, 3 to 4 inches of accumulation and nearing a foot in some areas. and also, we're showing areas that a lot of people accumulate to, but even the suburbs are definitely getting hit. if you have family and friends on the east coast, make sure you're checking on them all weekend long, as tonight is when the historical snow moves into the dc and maryland area. closer to home out towards akron, we are sitting under mostly cloudy skies. i want to show you the development of that storm. it's mixing in with some of that atlantic moisture. that's allowing for that warmer air.

maryland dealing with local gusts to hurricane force. 85 miles per hour, and that's what's causing blizzard warnings already to be put in place. closer to home this morning, as you're waking up, getting your day started, currently at 26 degrees. inland locations into the lower 20s. what we're dealing with is kind of rare here. we're dealing with a little bit of lake effect snow that is tracking backwards, all the way into western locations. erie, huron county, western portions of cuyahoga county. and that's going to continue throughout your morning. we dry out by midafternoon. hopefully you'll see a little peek of sunshine as we head into the 4:00 hour. temperatures. today. upper 20s out towards wayne county, with cloud coverage pretty much in effect. this is great news. look at 4:30. the clouds kind of split apart. sunshine moving through. they start to track back in,

tomorrow, we warm up just a few degrees. those clouds are going to keep us isolated a little bit and we'll be back into the 30s. so 27 for today. a little bit of lake effect snow out towards the west. east ciders, you mostly always get hit. this is tracking backwards due to the low pressure on the east coast. 16 for tonight. please, still have that coat handy. it gets even better monday and tuesday. 40, 42 degrees potentially. then our next front moves in midweek. nick? >> janessa, thank you. an important health alert now for soon-to-be parents. more babies are being born with a serious birth defect. doctors don't know why. it's called gastroschisis. the baby's intestines develop outside the baby. it can be corrected with surgery, but can cause life- long problems.

type of birth defect prompting a serious warning from doctors. they have told women to avoid getting pregnant for the next two years. el salvador is one of the countries where the zika virus is spreading. the virus can cause a rare neurological condition in babies. also, take a moment now to check your fridge for the dole packaged salad. listeria was found in products from the springfield, ohio plant. it has been linked to one death and a dozen other hospitalizations. packages from that facility can be identified by the letter a at the beginning of the manufacturing code. and the fda is now recalling a licorice coughing liquid because it contains morphine and it was sold here in ohio by masters herbs, inc. all of the bottles have been pulled from the shelves because it contains morphine, which is an opioid and is not listed on the bottle. it could cause life threatening respiratory depression and even death.

grocery stores in six states, including ohio. we have details about what you should do if you purchase one of these bottles on the newsnet5 app. a consumer alert now you need to know about so the next time you're at a gas station, you don't get ripped off. the macedonia police department is seeing a rise in credit card skimmers at pumps. an officer there is pointing to an actual skimmer. it's that gray strip you see on the device. it's placed on the inside of a gas pump and they are not detectable from the outside of any machine. they allow thieves to secretly record debit or credit card information and steal your identity. how do you know if you're inadvertently scanning your credit card at one? >> look at the credit card reader. if it appears it's been tampered with. if you shake it, it's loose, good chance there's a skimmer on top or inside of it. >> officer costello says the easiest way to avoid being robbed, do not pay at the gas pumps. instead, go inside and pay.

to fight a different kind of identity theft. president obama is asking the pentagon to overhaul the federal security clearance system. we've learned a new government office will eventually take over the task. last year, a massive government data breach left more than 21 million people vulnerable. a big warning coming out of summit county, after a charity scam took thousands from people all over the county concerning donations for the shop with a cop program. the callers were allegedly saying the sheriff's office was working with the blue knights motorcycle club, but the sheriff's office is not affiliated with that club and it's not soliciting donations for shop with a cop. in all, 40 residents and local businesses donated to this fake effort. one suspect has been identified and others could face charges. if you've been contacted, call the summit county sheriff's office. well, coming up, as a massive winter storm ramps up along the east coast, dumping feet of snow, travel by any means is a major problem.

we're taking a live look outside at seaside, new jersey, and they are literally getting slammed by that winter storm this morning along the east coast. high waves, just a part of this winter storm. welcome to this saturday edition of good morning cleveland. i'm nick foley, alongside meteorologist janessa webb. we've got developing stories in a bit, but first, janessa, how about that local forecast? thankfully we're not dealing with conditions anywhere near what those people are dealing with. and those waves, definitely causing beach erosion in that area. >> that's another part of it we haven't discussed, too. >> erosion's going to be terrible. we're going to be starting to see that tomorrow evening, all the way into monday. they were just dealing with superstorm sandy just in the last three years. so this is another major winter storm that is affecting the east coast. if you have family and friends, make sure you're checking on them all weekend long. let's show you closer to home, our temperatures this morning, we are into the mid to lower 20s.

we're going to start to see the thermometer go up just a few clicks as we head into midafternoon. we'll still be into the upper 20s as we head into your midafternoon. let's show you what's happening here. due to that area of low pressure that's affecting the east coast, it's a transition in our cloud coverage. they are working in from north to west and that's why we are dealing with a little bit of lake effect snow that is currently tracking in backwards. evening plans tonight, we're remaining on the cooler side into the lower 20s. but i have hope for a little bit of sunshine going into the 5:00 hour. as we said, many people to our east are preparing to be in one place for the long haul. cities getting hit the hardest, like washington and baltimore could get more than 2 feet of snow, as janessa said. places on the fringe of the storm like where the photos are taken in kentucky, also seeing blizzard conditions, up to 18 inches right now. and of course all of that

travelers this morning. we are seeing thousands of flights delayed or canceled this morning, including some scheduled right here out of cleveland hopkins. and that is where we find our own meg shaw this morning. meg, what's the latest at the airport? how busy is it, as folks head to the airport? >> reporter: nick, it's actually pretty quiet out here this morning. this is interesting. you mentioned baltimore is supposed to get 2 feet of snow. right now, there is a flight still scheduled at 3:25. another couple of flights, boston, charlotte, more places that are getting the heavy snow. i'm eager to see how long it will take before those flights get canceled. while cleveland is in the clear this time around, what about when we are slammed with that much snow? last year, hopkins was fined $735,000 from the faa for being accused of understaffing and being underprepared when heavy snow hit. but this year, the airport's

>> here, we just ensure that we identified all of those obstacles, created a plan to eliminate them, and we've been very successful this year. >> reporter: and the director also says for the first time in years, they are fully staffed. so when that snow hits, even the slightest chance of snow, they are working to call the staff members in to keep passengers safe flying in and out of hopkins. nick, if and when we expect that much snow this winter, good to know that cleveland hopkins is prepared. meg shaw, news channel 5. >> meg, thank you. we certainly haven't seen our share yet. we've been very fortunate. the massive winter storm hitting the east coast is impacting travel across the country, but it was unrelated snow flurries that caused problems in chicago yesterday. the united airlines flight slid off a runway at o'hare airport after arriving from san francisco. you can see the nose on the ground. with 179 passengers on the

injuries were reported. the airport brought in buses to take passengers to their gate. right now, police in cleveland are looking for a man who put a gun to a woman's head and stole her car. it happened in the parking lot of dave's supermarket on carroll avenue. police say the woman was parking when a man walked up with a gun. as he drove off in her car, some bystanders tried to step in and help. he even hit one on his way out. police are now looking for a 2003 silver honda with the ohio license plate number fzs 5354. if you see that car or know anything about this case, you're asked to call police. well, parma police have now identified three suspects in a violent home invasion thursday morning. they say 23-year-old william garrett, 23-year-old stephen lewis, and 19-year-old christopher higgs beat a homeowner with a frying pan. police say the men stole a van, then led them on a chase through three cities before crashing into a brooklyn home. the homeowner was admitted to

all three men have been charged with burglary. and new this morning, kent police making a shocking discovery inside a southside apartment complex. a 2-year-old child stuck in a bathroom toilet. the child's parents, nowhere to be found. joe paganakis reports investigators also found a marijuana growing operation in the couple's bedroom. >> reporter: it happened here. canton police called to the skyline terrace apartments, after residents reported hearing a child crying in one of the units for more than two hours. when police made their way to unit number 6 on the second floor, they could hear the child crying behind this locked door. so police had to get a maintenance worker to let them inside, finding the 2-year-old child. the baby boy's leg was stuck in the toilet. police say the child's mother, 20-year-old justice chance, and his father, 20-year-old rashad cuffee, left the baby alone.

>> i commend the neighbors for getting involved. i mean, i'm glad there was a good outcome and everybody did their part and got him to safety. >> reporter: the child is now in the custody of stark county children's services. police say chance and cuffee were also allegedly involved in a marijuana growing operation. marijuana plants and digital scales confiscated from a bedroom in their apartment unit. residents say they weren't surprised drugs were allegedly involved in this case. >> that doesn't surprise me. i mean, look where we live. >> reporter: reporting in canton, 5 on your side investigator joe paganakis. >> cuffee and chance are both being held in the stark county jail, charged with child endangerment and possession of marijuana. both are set for preliminary hearings on january 27. well, the summit county medical examiner's office -- summit county, i should say, now working with a forensic anthropologist on human remains found earlier this month in south akron. a skull was found on a sidewalk

8. since then, police have been trying to make an identification. police are not releasing a lot of details on this case. and in warrensville heights, police stepping up their search for a killer. it has been almost a year since 49-year-old marq lanier was found shot to death in the doorway of a wickfield avenue home. crime stoppers has stepped in with a reward of up to $2500 arrest. one of the victims of of a deadly early morning fire in cleveland earlier this week has 85-year-old jeanette arlington and her sister now also identified, 89-year-old mary wright, died in the early street. both of them lived in the home, but in separate apartments. still ahead this morning, tire troubles. more cars being towed, fewer flats being fixed roadside, all because millions of cars are missing one important item. >> plus, arctic blasts are

look at all the snow towards mentor. we'll start to see this kind of fade away a little bit heading into your monday and tuesday. temperatures return to the lower 40s. today, though, not seeing a ton of sunshine, maybe late afternoon. we'll be under cloudy skies. what you'll notice is the winds tracking in from the northwest, 15 to 20 miles per hour out towards starke and summit county, 27 degrees. hour. cloud coverage continuing. many people going to the q coat handy. 24 by 10:00 p.m., into the lower to upper teens. yesterday. i got to go to st. mark's school, second to eighth graders. it was career day. >> i see you back there! >> you see me all the way in the back there! these kids were so fun. we had featured meteorologists,

they all want to definitely go into news now. it was a great day. >> future meteorologists there, all smiling. thank you, janessa. ohio's recent cold temperatures have given us an awe-inspiring sight along the shores of lake erie. those freezing waves have created their own beautiful ice sculptures that are really something to see. you can call it mother nature's version of ice art. but instead of a block of ice and a chainsaw, she is using lake erie's waves, cleveland's brutal winds, and our frigid here's how it works. arctic air blowing across lake erie, which hasn't frozen over just yet. >> when the wind comes through, the waves get big and splashes up into the air, which then coats these wonderful light posts we have and we get these nice ice sculptures. >> the phenomenon is luring plenty of photographers to get some cool shots. but keep in mind, a number of areas on the shore are closed due to concerns of falling ice. so if you go out there, please be careful.

recent polls show bernie sanders leading in iowa and new hampshire. >> if we do well in both of those states, i think, my friends, we are looking at one of the great political upsets in the modern history of the united states of america. meanwhile, republican presidential hopeful chris christie decided to cancel his remaining events in new hampshire, traveling back to new jersey as his state prepares for that big winter storm. here in ohio, voters will get to cast their ballots in months. while much of the attention is focused on that race for president, there's also a primary on the democratic side on the race for u.s. senate. u.s. channel 5's john kosich has more on this matchup. >> reporter: it is a race that involves former ohio governor ted strickland against cincinnati councilman pj sittenfeld. though it may sound lopsided, sittenfeld says underestimate at your own risk. former governor ted strickland

senator rob portman, but will have to first get by city councilman pj sittenfeld, warning it will be about his race for governor. >> republicans are eager to make this united states senate race a stale, anger, bitter argument about the past. we want to look forward. we want to say how can we tackle the urgent issues of the day? >> reporter: he was endorsed by the party not long after announcing his run last year, in hopes of avoiding a costly primary. sittenfeld has stayed in the race, picking up the backing of several democratic leaders in summit county, including the county executive, new mayor of akron, and former congressman and state senator tom sawyer, who said he didn't like the party's rush to endorse strickland. >> they didn't consult those of they didn't ask. truth of the matter is, neither did ted. pg did. he came and asked for our support, talked to us about his positions, as candidates should. >> reporter: the 74-year-old strickland, whose campaign

ohio leaders who have endorsed him, has refused to debate sittenfeld, who argues there are genuine policy differences between the two of them. >> let's discuss them. not everyone's going to agree with me. that's fine. but let's at least have a robust conversation about what's at stake here. we as a democratic party should never be afraid of the democratic process. >> reporter: sittenfeld says between his own campaign and a superpac supporting him, they will have more than $2 million to tell his story over the course of the next two months. on your side, john kosich, news channel 5. >> john, thank you. we'll keep an eye on that race. now, while we are in the dead of winter, many of us are dreaming about tropical vacations. but for many, that's all it is, dreaming. the u.s. is dubbed no vacation nation because americans have a bad habit of working nonstop. last year, more than 40% of people turned down vacation days. while it may make you look like a model employee, it could be doing more harm than good. experts tell us we're missing out on the benefits of

here from cleveland hopkins. that is where we find our own meg shaw this morning. meg, you've been there for several hours now. what's the latest at hopkins this morning? >> reporter: well, guys, you can imagine, if you're planning to head to new york, boston or baltimore, anywhere along the east coast for that matter, buckle up, because it's going to be a long weekend. there have been a couple lines down at the delta counter, not very many people out here because they know if you're going to the east coast, you are going to have a delayed or even canceled flight. now, although we are in the clear for this storm, we still have quite a bit of winter left. the airport says they will be ready when it's our turn. the airport's interim director says for the first time in years, they are fully staffed, unlike in years past, hopkins isn't relying on predictions from the weather service to call in that staff. he says even when there is a small chance of snow, those people are going to be called in. >> that way we'll never get in

quality department were suspended and flint is working to make its tap water safe again. lead levels are so high, people can't safely use that water. and we told you thursday that bubba q's in avon is collecting water to send to flint. we checked last night and more than 2000 bottles have been already donated. well, closer to home, there are concerns about the water in sebring, in mahoning county. neighbors were told yesterday that tests found too much lead in their water. officials are telling children and pregnant women not to drink the water. ingesting too much lead can lead to life-long problems. so those problems with drinking water in flint and sebring prompted news channel 5 to dig deeper into that testing of cleveland's water system. here's what we found. cleveland's water comes from lake erie which has a very low lead content level. the city tests about 300 water samples each day for lead, copper and other contaminants. the treatment process includes the use of ortho phosphate, which helps prevent potential

well, last year, hopkins was fined $735,000 from the faa for being accused of understaffing and being underprepared when that heavy snow hit. but this year, the airport's interim director says they are ready. >> we just ensure that we identified all of those obstacles, created a plan to eliminate them and we've been very successful this year. >> reporter: the director said they are fully staffed for the first time in years and that full staff is being called in, even when there is a slight chance of snow. they want to keep everybody safe when they are out here at hopkins. nick, if and when we end up getting that much snow this winter, hopkins says they are ready. but i don't know about you, but i'm interested in a flight to cancun, or orlando. might not see you if i come back. meg shaw, news channel 5. >> all three of us for sure. thank you, meg.

impacting the east coast is also impacting travel across the country, but unrelated snow flurries caused problems in chicago yesterday. a united airlines flight slid off the airport at o'hare after arriving from san francisco. there were 179 passengers and six crewmembers on board of the plane. no injuries were reported. the airport brought in buses to take those passengers to their gate. right now, police in cleveland are looking for a man who put a gun to a woman's head and stole her car. it happened in the parking lot of dave's supermarket on carroll avenue. police say the woman was parking when a man walked up with a gun. as he drove off with her car, some bystanders actually tried to step in and help. he even hit one of them on his way out of the parking lot. police are looking for a 2003 silver honda with this license plate, ohio plate number fzs 5354. if you see that car, know anything about this case, you're urged to call police. parma police now have

in a violent home invasion thursday morning. they say 23-year-old william garrett and 23-year-old stephen lewis and 19-year-old christopher higgs beat a homeowner with a frying pan. police say the men then stole a van and led police on a chase through three cities before crashing into a brooklyn home. the homeowner was admitted to metro health in serious condition. all three men have been charged with burglary. new this morning, canton police make a shocking discovery inside a south side apartment complex. bathroom toilet. the child's parents, nowhere to be found. 5 on your side investigator joe investigators also found a marijuana growing operation in >> reporter: it happened here, canton police called to the skyline terrace apartments, after residents reported hearing a child crying in one of the units for more than two hours. police made their way to unit 6 on the second floor, they could hear the child crying behind this locked door. so police had to get a

live pictures of dc all morning. what's it like right now? >> reporter: nick, can you believe it? we're dealing with feet, not inches. i've only really covered inches, not feet. so far, we have had more than a foot of snow here in washington, dc. that blizzard started at 1:00 yesterday, 1:00 p.m., and it is still going. blizzard warning in effect in our nation's capital until tomorrow in the morning. look. this is incredible here. incredible scene of just how much snow we've gotten so far here on the streets of dc. this is actually a street behind me, believe it or not, and it is snow-covered. crews are trying to stay on top of this. listen to the numbers. we have hundreds of thousands of people who are without power. we have flights, thousands of flights that have been canceled, more than 6000 so far. airports are closed here in the northeast. states of emergency in dc, philadelphia, new york. so people are really bracing

i can tell you, as far as blizzards, it's been since 1922 since dc experienced something like this, getting more than 2 feet. >> complete whiteout there. kenneth, quickly, you mentioned the power in washington, dc. murial bowser mentioned some residents could be without power for up to three days. what's the condition like right now with the power? >> reporter: she did mention that. the electricity companies in the area, when they gave their hourly update, they said they are doing everything they can to restore power. they have told people to stay off the streets, hunker down. they are doing everything they can to make sure people have electricity, to say warm inside their homes. that's why we're in a state of emergency, because this is a very serious situation. i should also report that this massive storm up and down the east coast has already been deadly. several people, about nine people have already lost their lives in car crashes, because troopers have literally responded to thousands of car crashes. they told people to stay off

that's exactly what they should do in this massive storm. >> kenneth, thank you so much for updating us from washington, dc. very serious condition out there. bundle up. try to stay warm. janessa joining me now for a look at weather. saying it all. >> i wish i could say this is the last. this is just revving up. i mean, we're going to start to see some atlantic, warm atlantic air mixing in with that moisture. that's going to allow our winds to really rev up here as we head into the next 12 hours. we are definitely not in the clear tonight, definitely going to see a massive amount of snow. we've already seen hurricane force winds southeast of the maryland area, gusts to 85 miles per hour, reports in virginia, to 60 to 70 miles per hour, and that's going to reduce visibility. as kenneth said, if you don't have to be out on roadways, you definitely don't need to be.

you need to be checking on them, from raleigh-durham all the way up towards the new york area, as 12 states are currently under some kind of advisory or warning at this hour. earlier this week, it was nearly 22, as phase i started to make its way onshore from texas all the way into louisiana. you can see the area of low pressure is starting to generate more energy here with warm ocean atlantic moisture starting to make its way onshore. that's why we're going to see that historic snowfall, about 2 feet of accumulation for washington, dc. closer to home, cloudy skies and still snow on the ground for the mentor area. things pretty quiet across northeast ohio. just waking up into the lower to mid-20s. we're dealing with something rare this morning. usually tracking lake effect

definitely still in the air. we're not in the clear just yet from that cooler air, but we're making a comeback very quickly. hard to believe i'm talking about 42. yeah, on monday afternoon, late january, folks, that is ideal. but we see our next front move through wednesday with our daytime highs back into the upper 20s. now to a consumer investigation into something that may be missing from your car. turns out 30 million vehicles are driving the nation's roads without a spare tire. gio benitez has a look at what's going on and what you can do about it. >> reporter: an object in the road or a pothole in your path could stop your car in its tracks. michelle stephens got a flat in her 2014 cadillac. >> had a big hole in my tire. >> reporter: in her trunk, no spare tire. only a tire inflation kit. >> after i looked at my tire, i just kind of said forget it, it's not going to work. >> reporter: the kit includes a sealant that coats the inner wall of your tire and covers
