up the dunes. look what's happening on the other side of the country. california. powerful storm fueled by el nino damages the pier, opened a sink hole, and eroded the cliff, threatening a number of homes and apartments south of san francisco. now a state of emergency is declared, and officials are trying to figure out what to do. the american red cross says all of this weather has left them with an emergency need for blood and plate lath donations -- platelet donations. the agency typically sees a drop in donations during the holidays, so the cancellations are putting them in a dire situation. >> 9500 or so blood donations have gone under collected. that puts us in an unprecedented position where we need to appeal donors.
