good afternoon. this is leon bibb. an altercation between an alleged shoplifter and security guard ends in gunshots on cleveland's east side. meghan hickey has more on what is happening. what can you tell us. >> reporter: police tell me this is a grand river police officer work willing off duty as a security -- working off duty as a security guard.

incident. the suspected shoplifters, a man and woman were chased from the scene. they entered a van, the officer followed and was dragged by the van. he fired several rounds. when i got to the scene i could see four shell casings. police say no one was shot but the officer was injured. he is being treated. the suspects are a black male and female driving a dark blue van, possibly a kia is he donna. >> thanks for your report. more breaking news at the noon hour. first responders are on the scene of a bad crash on interstate 90. the investigation is centered on the rest stop at route 44. there are injuries. we will bring you more news as this story develops. a man is dead trying to outrun a train in summit county. around 6:00 in the morning a man in an s.u.v. drove around several vehicles

crossing on waterloo in barberton. he drove around the lowered railroad crossing gates but his move was not quick enough. the vehicle was hit by the oncoming train. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. another crash to report on state route 10. it began with a call about an abandoned vehicle around 7:30 this morning. when officers arrived they found a 25-year-old from lakewood inside the car. she was taken to the metro health medical center by life flight. it's unknown how long she was in the vehicle before officers arrived. new details about a violent overnight crash on the city's east side. we know the name of the woman who was killed at east 71st street and superior avenue. 33-year-old la quinta hofstetter died. at one point officers and firefighters using the their bare hands tried to get her out.

from the vehicle and remain in serious condition this afternoon. another update to the story we brought you on "good morning, cleveland." we know the name of a woman killed at a brooklyn residence. olivia stole was shot in the chest around 7:30 last night. her roommate, michael lancaster is in custody right now. he is being held on reckless homicide charges. in the community of tallmadge, there is a major water main break at southeast avenue ander redrive -- and erie drive. a precautionary boil water is in effect. it should be brought to a full boil for one minute before using the water. let's check in on the weather. >> it's cold out there.

to remain in place all of your thursday, maybe dropping a few additional degrees. ongoing light snowfall continues to make its way into northeast ohio. temperatures at midday, talking 30s. here is the bit of light snow. we have heavier pockets in place. this continues east. driving on 6 you may notice that as you are heading out for afternoon plans. as well as 322, light snow. we move to the eastern half of geauga to ashtabula, a few pockets here as well. this is real light. today. no accumulations. let's than an inch. even with the lake effect kicking in more. temperatures dropping into the 20s for tonight. but we have a bigger snowmaker to talk about. we will talk about that coming up in a few minutes. leon? >> so it goes. many thanks, tera. cleveland is starting to tackle the city's lead problems. they are meeting with inspectors from four other communities.

services committee is meeting in city hall to discuss lead paint inspections. state and county statistics show more than 30% of children in some neighborhoods on cleveland's east side could have lead poisoning issues. the purpose of the meeting is to find a better way to test the children and prevent future issues. a cleveland used car dealer accused of not giving titles to buyers of his cars is being sued by the ohio attorney general. champion marketing group has several locations in cleveland. one on west 130th street. this is a story similar to one we followed in akron. there 86 customers filed title complaints against phoenix indoor auto sales. our partners at ohio.com asked the a.g. would file a lawsuit in the akron case but the attorney general would not comment, at least not yet. the university of akron

we are taking another look at breaking news right now on i 89 r 90. one -- i-90. one person is dead after a crash there. we have the latest on the story. what are you tell us, kristin. >> reporter: an 87-year-old man is deceased. he is from mahoning township.

honda that you see. we are on i-90 westbound at mile marker 198. i spoke to state highway patrol. they tell me the crash started a half mile down on i-90 westbound down here. the driver first hit a jeep then continued and hit this white semi on the left side over there and then that car continued even more then lastly hit the orange semi that you see there and that's where it ended. this is a ray that involves this orange semi. there are no other injuries. i asked officers the name of the man they are still in the process of notifying his family. they are not releasing his name. i asked if speed was a factor. they are investigating that. they are not sure. traffic is backed up as far as i can see. i would say at least a mile. back to you. >> kristin volk on the scene. thanks.

transpacific partnership is in effect. ministers from a dozen nations signed the deal in new zealand. it creates a free trade zone among 12 pacific nations including the u.s. it rhett sent 40% of the world's economy. this marks the biggest free trade deal the world has seen in 20 years. it's not popular with everyone. >> i think it's clear new zealand is divided. the government hasn't explained about it. they are just ramming it down their throat. >> a recent study shows it will likely increase income, exports and growth in the u.s. but unlikely to add to overall employment. the obama administration said pacing the deal would be the biggest economic priority of the final year of president obama's presidency. the founder of wikileaks p julian assange will ask for his passport to be returned and his

a united nations panel ruled arbitrarily detained. ecuador granted him asylum. he is wanted for questioning in sweden. he called the charges an attempt to extradite him to the u.s. because his group published sensitive communications online. in oregon the fight has begun over who will foot the wildlife refuge. for now state and local agencies are paying the overtime. eventually it will be passed on to taxpayers. an oregon legislature has legislation to require the

just a day after meeting for a town hall, the democratic front runners face off for a debate in new hampshire tonight. in yesterday's cnn town hall, the presidential contenders took questions from audience members and the host, anderson cooper. there was a moment of levity when bernie sanders weighed in on his dope pl ganger, comedian this weekend. >> are you doing larry david right now. >> i am larry david. you didn't get it. >> tonight's msnbc debate is a chance for hillary clinton to hampshire. right now sanders has the lead in the polls there. the granite state is sanders territory part partly because proximity to vermont.

the republican front runners. ted cruz is firing back at donald trump for accusing him of fraud. trump says cruz sent an e-mail to support on caucus day suggesting ben carson was dropping out of the race. >> we are libel to wake up one morning and donald, if he were president, would have nucleared denmark. >> in a tweet donald said ted cruz didn't win iowa, he stole it. cruz responded by saying trump has a nasty temper. it looks as if governor john kasich is hedging his bets on the new hampshire primary. quote, gets smoked next week, presidential race. ohio's kasich placed 8th in the iowa caucuses but he spent more time in the new hampshire primary where he is polling better. news channel 5's democracy

john kasich will have live reports from the granite state. he will be live at 6:00 and 11:00 on the news and continue to cover what is happening in the race until voters go to the polls in new hampshire tuesday. in health news, an exciting study from the mayo clinic that could lead to longer life spans for humans. the study tested a new drug on laboratory mice. since taking the drug, the mice have been living longer and looking healthier. the drug removes damaged cells that no longer divide. as a result, organs stay healthier longer. >> we see health improvements in a number of tissues. we think an important tissue is the heart. it seems like the heart was able to maintain its youthful performance so it was very stress resistant. >> the study found no negative side effects from the drug. human trials are expected to
