a woman is dead fooling violent crash downtown. >> one of our photographs captured this video of police trying to rescue the woman trapped. first responders frantically tried to free the woman with their own hands as they waited for the jaws of life to arrive. >> we wanted to know why did it take several extra minutes for the life-saving tool to arrive on scene. our derick waller is live in cleveland.

at 1:02, six minutes later. the victim was pronounced dead today there's a memorial. >> if they had the jaws of life everywhere they're supposed to be, maybe she would still be here. >> reporter: but we were told the squad's closing would have no impact on service. >> at no point or no means would we not supply the residents with their medical support. >> to someone watching, couldn't they conclude that there was an impact on service? >> people can make a lot of assumptions. >> reporter: gray told me those services were moved to areas with greater call volumes. >> these are situations that are really thought over very carefully to the benefit of the residents of the city. >> reporter: but overall, budget data does show about 130 fewer fire department personnel than five years ago. >> those reductions that you've seen that we've seen since 2011 all boots on the >> reporter: obviously there's no way to know for sure if

made a difference but this does raise an issue of funding. this week mayor frank jackson proposed his budget which includes a half percent increase in the income tax. that money does go to help fire, police, and ems. derick waller, newschannel5. a canton man was killed after witnesses say tried to beat a train at a crossing in barberton. witnesses told us 51-year-old anthony nichols drove around several cars waiting, and then through the gates before he was hit by the train. an accident between a car and a semitruck on interstate 90 killed an 87-year-old man. it happened at that time rest area on the westbound side of i-90 in concord twi. ohio state police are still investigating the circumstances into what happened. a police chase, a high- speed crash, and an explosion. all of those terrifying events unfolding on the streets of akron. newschannel5 broke that story

bob generals has new video. >> reporter: by the time it was all over, chris, an innocent driver was injured. he was brought here to akron bush unit. he suffered burns to his hands and burns to his back. today a witness to that accident provided cell phone video showing a pickup engulfed in flames after a chevy impala plowed into it in the firestone park neighborhood around 9:00. earlier police were trying to stop that car and its driver, a zane separate hit skip. the driver exceeded 90 miles per hour and the cops called off the chase but hicks kept going and slammed into a truck which was hauling cans of it was so lean. a 43-year-old escaped the truck with burn injuries. hicks ran away but was arrested behind a church. >> i have to family size our

she was riding her bike in october 2013 when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver. it this is video of her in the hospital. now we're going to fast forward. today she told a judge she's back on her bike, and the man who hit her deserved to be there. a trial date has now been set for the second man accused of killing an elderly couple from strasburg just over a year ago. jeffrey stewart is facing murder charges in the deaths of doyle and lillian chummily. prosecutors say they broke into the couple's home, bound them with duct tape, drove them to a rural area and shot them before setting their car on fire. robert clark was sentenced to life without parole in august. a case of cleveland police misconduct is now on its way to trial. this one involved a boy with disabilities and more than five years later those officers have not been disciplined.

we've been covering since last february. >> let's take you back. it was august 16th, 2010, when juan ortiz was playing outside his apartment complex. two officers pulled up looking for a robbery. when juan saw the pay, he ran to his parents and kazmir ran after him. witnesses described him yanking mom away from his mom, slamming him against a hot rung car for 45 minutes. three minutes after tint cleveland's civilian police review board recommended that the two be disciplined for their actions against juan. but that never happened. justice. the future. i want to see him, that everything is clear for him, that not all the police officers are bad.

that's hacked or accessed 73,000 ip-based cameras around the world. i'm not naming the site, but you don't need to league in, you don't pay for it. it's wide open, capturing intimate images. it's the kind of invasion of privacy that has people in our area wondering. here i am at a local business that uses a multi-camera system. you can see inside the offices. and various spots outside, including here, over here by this truck, and this camera. this whole system can be controlled by a cell phone. so is the owner worried about getting hacked? >> any technology, there's always people out there that are 10 steps ahead of it. >> reporter: mike is still very cicht his system that's actually helped catch crooks. but in this lab, a student lets me in, and i'm walking around. the school told me the cameras

is cleaning up after a small fire, a fire the family says was started all because of a hoverboard. josh bought his son one this christmas, wanted to get his son what is turning out to be the hottest toy of the season literally. this one caught on fire while it was charging. the local fire chief says it looks as if the batteries burst apart, and putnam says was careful about the type of hoverboard he bought. >> we did our research. it said the ones with the three prong, you can plug them in, and they're fine. you don't have to worry about those. obviously they're a danger. >> thankfully only the carpet in the family's home was damaged. new numbers out show half of teens get their exercise at school but is it enough? the study found they're still only getting about half of what's recommended daily. researchers discovering teens

day doing some form of exercise, but 42% of that was mainly just walking to and from class. the study also found walking to school added an extra 15 to 20 minutes of physical activity for students. however, only 15% of kids today actually do that. avon lake city schools getting a grant to encourage physical education at schools. fuel up to play 60 as well as the american dairy association giving the district $17,000. the play 60 program was created to make sure kids get the nutrition and exercise they need to stay healthy as they grow. well, it's been a busy week of winners and losers this week, between the iowa caucuses and the soon to be super bowl champions on sunday. >> why not leave the all- important decision to a taker at a zoo in des moines. broncos or panthers?

sports. we just got a police report from the fort worth police department about the johnny manziel incident from over the weekend. johnny manziel's altercation with his ex-girlfriend, colleen crowley. he has not been charged. let's make that perfectly clear. but the report claims that crowley says johnny did hit her. here's the 911 call. >> i heard her scream coying came out, and she said her boyfriend had hit her. >> so we'll have more on that tonight at 11:00 and also the full police report on newsnet5.com.
