at 11:00, weather alert. white out conditions causing big problems for drivers. flashing yellow light can be seen for miles up and down major roadways as icy roads and white out conditions brain drivers to a skidding halt. flashing blue lights blind city streets and highways as officers responded to dozens of accidents. snow-covered roadways caused a number of cars to spin out and crash. the driver of this car managed to escaped with minor injuries. the snow has been a big challenge for odot crews making repeated runs tonight. we caught up with this crew on monday west in cleveland. poor visibility is making it hard for crews to stay ahead of the storm. we have live team coverage to keep the roads clear and the cleanup after the crash that

we start with mark johnson. how bad is it out there right now?>>reporter: the schools have arrived and they are outside of the warning counties. they are all over the place. here is a live look at our storm tracker. interstate 70 seven and 40, this is a mess. this is 25 miles per hour travel. it's near zero visibility at times is the squirrels really add up and look at those roadways. not a clear lane anywhere to be found. again, where squalls exist, 2 inch 2 in./h. we have generally two. one is here. into southern lorain county. the bigger one stretches from lorraine through the western suburbs just south of downtown in northern summit county into southern cuyahoga and that's

youngstown area. let me show you the heaviest oh -- snow detector. one to 2 inches of snowfall per hour. there's the 480 split and heavy snow. x feel, northfield, twinsburg. still moderate snow. that stretches into aurora. this band has been sinking southward but another heavy band from willard to south of wellington. that's moving southward. could see another 1-5 inches of snow where these bands persist overnight. new images still pouring in of that huge crash that shutdown i-90 and lake county for four hours. >> some were critically injured. >> live at the scene.

after hours of being shut down, right now there trying to piece together what led to all these crashes but they are blaming it on whether. while we were driving on mine do, it was nearly impossible to see. photos show the incredible damage to cars, trucks and some eyes on i-90 after a series of rex sent 17 people to area hospitals. chief frank whitaker says at least 15 some eyes and dozens of cars were involved in several separate chain reaction crashes. >> people started sliding into each other so we had at least three cars that ran into the back and many a semi trailer. >> reporter: crews from oliver lee county responded trying to triage the most critically injured first but they quickly learned that was a challenge. >> when you have an accident scene that spread out and a serious injury -- >> reporter: the first accident happened right after 2:00 and hours later, the wreckage was

drivers like chris lawrence say in the matter of minutes, a squall blew in and they couldn't see a single thing. he says he saw the dim lights of a semi stopped on interstate >> the inevitable happened since it was downhill, high slide -- started sliding of lost control.>> reporter: he says he hasn't even had his car for a month. >> now, it's totaled and i will never see the car again. >> reporter: three people in the rack were critically injured. they were taken to metro hospital and we will keep you posted on their condition as soon as we know more. frank wiley is checking out conditions as well. this snow is really making it tough for road crews to keep up. >> it is. from where i'm standing, doesn't feel any better but we can see a lot better.

now at least appear to be gone. that snow is really coming down earlier but the real concern is drivers. traffic moving along smoothly where crews did their triple blanketed drivers as the drive war on. they drive slowed to a crawl. white out conditions are to blame. police and state troopers have been encouraged to protect themselves while helping others. hours earlier, a 15 car pileup on i-90 showed what can happen. a temporary fix is being applied in repeated throughout the night. tons of salt as being scattered by crews working the wound -- around-the-clock.

family of tamir rice. the city filed a claim in probate court today saying the rice's oh $500 for the medical care the 12-year-old received after he was shot and killed by cleveland police outside the cudell recreation center. the man accused of leaving his three-year-old alone in the car and it was stolen seconds later pleaded not guilty to driving under suspension. fred greer was in court today. our cameras were the only ones there as police and paramedics comforted the child moments after the car thief dropped her off in the middle of the street. police are still looking for the car and whoever stole it. police are looking for one of the four men they say used a fake profile on a dating website to rob men. 18-year-old jamaal dunston is facing aggravated robbery charges. we talked to one of the victims last month who says he went to meet a woman at a home on

to-face with a man and i. another man was robbed days before. three other men are also charged in the crimes. police are looking for a stolen 2006 gray toyota camry with this license plate number. f i a 3 5 7. the person who stole it is accused of beating a woman and tying her up before taking her car at the former parkfield hotel until lorraine early this morning. the woman who is the manager of the hotel and lives there woke up to find a man in her room who demanded money before attacking her. tonight. there have been many problems at a hotel in brook park. police shut it down. you can see them reading the travelodge on brook park road they say it's a haven for trafficking. police had been there more than 650 times in the past two today's raid left some people who rented rooms at the travelodge without a place to

a nearby church and the red cross i know helping them. a story you will only see here. a battle brewing over displaying the american flag. >> a cleveland business owner facing thousands in fines after city inspectors issued violations saying the american flag was being used like a business sign. joe pagonakis has been working on this case all night. some say it's a violation. >> reporter: the business owner you are about to meet says she will take this fight to court. there is nothing subtle about the signs outside liberty tax service at west 65th in cleveland especially during tax season but it was these american flags that actually got owner rachel ruffing into trouble earning her violations she says total more than $2000 in fines. >> number one, it's the american flag and everyone should be entitled to fly the american flag.

for violation of ordinance 350.01. but she says they got it wrong. >> they are not representing anything other than the usa. it's not like we are promoting liberty tax or anything like that. it's just the american flag. >> reporter: the same thing happened at liquid planet cafi. violations for these radical signs out front. the tickets were issued without warning. >> i had three violations in the past three weeks and again i have yet to talk to a city inspector or anybody about this issue. no one has called me or warned me. >> reporter: ruffing says if she's breaking the law, why suddenly enforce it now?>> i've had those out for about three years during tax season and this is the first time i've heard it can't be there.>>reporter: we contacted bills -- the building and housing director about the violations but haven't received any answer yet. the american flags are still

>> reporter: ladies, some drivers are more confident than others. that doesn't always pay off. in fact, we saw some drivers stranded on the side of the road. if you are out and about, grab a couple blankets and maybe some water, cell phone charger and jumper cables because you might be out there waiting a while before someone can come and help get you off the side of the road. the good news, if we could show this, this looks good on 90. that wasn't the case earlier. visibility was poor because of white out conditions for traffic is moving smoothly simply because those crews are out and about. we are talking about some 80 crews working around the clock, 12 hours a piece making sure these roads are clear for drivers as they make their commute. now, the bigger problem is the wind. the good news. for now, live in cleveland

closing in for tomorrow. >> i'm sure there will be delays for a few school districts. i always say if it's snowing between midnight and 4 am, you've got a great shot at a snow day. the problem is dryer air is moving in our way and that may shut a lot of the snow down. good news for travelers but not so much for the kids. let's take a look. this is our storm tracker. it's going to take some effort to fallen, especially in cuyahoga county. northern summit, northern portage and -- counties have been hit over the last couple hours. the snow concentrated in northern ohio. watch what happens. we are getting some clearing here indicating we have some

outcome rolling out some of that moisture and shut down some of our squall activity. here is where we have our official warnings. cuyahoga lake, a snow advisory. for those out. we have seen the squalls outside of those boundaries all evening. look at lorain county. a good 3-4 inches of snow. of toward avon, cuyahoga county from the west side, bay village, north homestead all the way over here into so wind, you have seen a good -- solon, so you have seen a good amount of snow. we will's when you over to the 422, i 80 corridor doors have seen 1-2 inches of snowfall. it has just been a mess for travelers. here is a heavier band here sliding south of new london

lodi has already seen 8 inches of snow. outside of the warning areas, here is twinsburg with heavy snow. that heavy snow band begins to shift farther south. northern portage county with a good 1-2 snowfall. trumbull county north of youngstown, lodi -- i'm sorry, lordstown getting some heavy snow, newton falls, there is the snow package but it looks like the snow is going to begin tapering off from north to south. cleveland 6 inches, jefferson 7 inches. we are in the teams right now. with wind out of the northwest at 20 miles per hour, look at these wind chills. quickly, wind chills at 60 in ashland. 130 overnight, lake snow another 1-3 inches tapering off after midnight.
