as windchills dip below zero, protecting cleveland's most vulnerable becomes more difficult. we'll introduce you to some of the faces helping to keep the homeless safe. messages of hate. swastikas and obscenities cover more than a dozen cars at one local dealership. we start off with a live look at downtown cleveland across the shores of lake erie. it just looks cold outside. beautiful image, but don't be deceived. welcome to this saturday edition of good morning cleveland. i'm nick foley alongside meteorologist janessa webb. the story of the day is the cold.

elevator shaft. it is cold and windy. fronts. one has crossed over. that's the ones you're talking about. 25 to 30 miles per hour. that's what's causing the seeing. these are some of the coldest temperatures of the season as you're just waking up. your skin. good morning, wayne county. that is where the bitter cold not dealing with too much moisture as that front has moved. that was more last night. but we'll start to see that rev up as we head into the rest of your saturday. down to about 10 below for the greater cleveland area. this well defined front that's just towards our east. it hasn't crossed over all of ohio yet. the temperatures will continue to sink down. you can see from minneapolis, green bay, those are the temperatures outside. four below.

today. a windchill advisory until 10:00 a.m. sunday across the board. no one is left out of this. so even going into tonight we'll be into the single digits. our windchills down to a negative digit territory. lake effect snow advisory until 4:00 p.m. where squalls persist. we could see another 4 to 6 inches from lake to northern portions of geauga county. definitely have my eye out on the chardon area where we could accumulation. lake effect snow warning until 10:00 p.m. for ashtabula county. 3 to 8 inches. taking a look at the power of 5, our live 5 radars. the moisture we tracked in last night. this is our next batch that's going to be affecting ashtabula county. it's going to start to stream in here as we head throughout the rest of the day. have our weather team tracking these storms.

tracker 5 just on i-90 east into euclid. what do you see, meg? >> i can tell you the roads are looking really good, like you mentioned we are on 90 east. i want to flip you around, show you what the roads look like. they're pretty clear. if you were on the roads last night, i was out doing some shopping around 6:00, 7:00, the roads were really bad. so that was the last time you were out, take a look. these are much, much better. but as janessa talked about, the big thing to do is this wind and cold. so if you are heading out on the roadways, make sure -- it's a two hands on the wheel kind of day. it's going to shift your car from left to right if you get a big gust of wind. make sure that you really are paying attention to the roads. especially if you're in areas where you have a lot of snow, blowing, drifting snow. could be really dangerous, especially on those secondary roads that the plow has not gotten to yet.

salted, they're saying off the secondary roads i was talking about. making sure because as janessa was talking about, we're going to get the second round of snow. we want to make sure we're prepared. if you're going out today, be careful. i will check back from with you in a little bit. >> that bitter cold making for conditions this morning. freezing chill takes a hold of northeast ohio, one group working to prevent deadly situation in this brutal cold. joe pagonakis spoke with the people braving the bitter temperatures to make sure others are safe. >> reporter: our winter weather issued an extreme one-two punch tonight. starting with near white out conditions and snowfall at about 7:00. lakewood drivers straining to see. an hour later dropping single digits. the emergency shelter at west 25th and detroit expected to reach its capacity. and the homeless take shelter

what you need to know today into want to. we are still tracking lake enhance snow showers throughout your afternoon. possibly another 4 to 6 inches out towards the primary snow belt where squalls persist, heavier amounts. the biggest story is cold, wind and our windchills. when you factor in a northwest wind as nick said this morning, you'll hear it in your house, in your apartment complex. they're gusting to about 24 to 35 miles per hour. that's going to be consistent throughout today into your evening hours. hopefully going to get a little bit of a break as we head into tomorrow. so that brings the temperature down. windchills are really not playing nice this morning. this is the ambient temperature outside. not what it feels like but just the core temperature out there. 8 degrees for the greater cleveland area. when you factor in the winds

wayne county this morning, you're at 15 below. so if you have exposed skin, if you're outside more than 20 minutes, definitely have chances of frostbite. so let's make sure you have the kids layered up yourself. double duty layers as that windchill advisory is in in effect until 10:00 a.m. sunday morning. we have our own meg shaw in storm tracker 5. we are over the snow just for this morning but you are tracking that dangerous windchill across the area. meg. >> yeah. absolutely. and we're in the car. you can kind of feel the car shifting back and fort when you have the big gusts of wind you're talking about. i want to show you the road. 90 east. we are just getting into mentor. the roads are looking really good. that's a good thing. because with all of this wind with that snow that we got the past couple of days, blowing,

make sure you're keeping an eye out for that. if you are heading out, bundle up. heading from the house to your car, it is cold. bundle up. we'll keep an eye on these roads and check back in with you soon. >> roads looking good. temperatures not so much. outrage over an ohio police officer's facebook post following the death of a black lives activist who killed himself. this is marshawn mccarroll. his last facebook post reads my demons won today, i'm sorry. that was monday. he had dedicated himself to the black lives matter movement. word quickly spread of his suicide. fairborn police officer lee sear is accused of posting love a happy ending, end quote, just two days after mccarroll killed himself. >> the tragedy is that there are more officers like him out there. until the good officers start taking charge and cleaning their ranks, getting rid of people like this, this is the

welcome back now. 6:16 on your saturday. new details emerging about the machete attack. information collectic connected to the registration led them to call in the fbi. the information triggered ab alert that required bringing in a local terrorism task force. we're hearing from victims of the attack. >> very big, long knife. machete. the other knife was a little bit darker but you could see two knives being swung the whole time. >> the own or of the restaurant says he believes the man targeted his establishment because he is israeli. the suspect was shot and killed by police. police are saying that a shooting at a glendale, arizona high school that left two girls

suicide note at the scene. the teens both 15 years old have been identified but their names aren't being released. meantime another school shooting back in the news 17 years after columbine the mother of dylan klebold is talking about what her son was like before the attack. she says she rationalized away warning signs out of love for her son. >> i mean i had all those illusions that everything was okay because -- and more than anything else because my love for him was to strong. >> she says not a day goes by she doesn't think of the victims and their families but what do those who lived there you that school shooting feel about sue klebold's decision to break her silence? we'll hear from some of them in the next hour. civil rights leader jesse jackson and flint, michigan

massive march and protest of the water contamination crisis. jackson and the leaders have their own plan to restore clean water to the city. he didn't hold back his feelings about the way the people of flint have been treated [ inaudible ] -- new pipes. a new water system. it's unethical what has happened. it's another level it's illegal. it's a third level, reconstruction. >> jackson adds flint is the defining moment in urban reconstruction in rebuilding america and putting america back to work. pope francis continues his visit to mexico this morning. he arrived in the country last night to much fanfare. during his welcome, pope francis replaced his skull cap with something a little more festive. it was a light hearted moment in what is a very serious trip

he is planning to visit some of the the poorest corners. the pope stopped in cuba. soon you can as well. starting tuesday u.s. air carriers will have 15 days to submit applications to the department of transportation for cuba routes. the development brings airlines and travelers closer to scheduled flights to the two countries. the u.s. and cuba are expected to formally sign an agreement to resume flights soon. janessa joining us now. we could use a flight to cuba. anywhere in the tropics i would take it. anywhere down there. i would not complain. >> cuba sounds nice with that sunshine. what if you're a cold fan? >> if you're a cold fan, insane cold fan. >> you've been waiting. >> you're loving it this morning. >> you've been waiting all season. it's been a year since we've seen temperatures this cold. >> i think it's safe to say this is like the coldest feels like day.

hopefully we start to warm up here. we are not seeing a frozen lake erie. not even close. this time last year it was completely frozen over. temperatures still at their mark for this time of year. look at that beautiful shot. waking up to cloudy skies. a little bit of low clouds. i do want to talk about the winds this morning. they're changing the game. i mean 15 to 20 miles per hour. that's going to bring your temperature down quite a bit. wind cast throughout the afternoon. you can see still picking up, these are sustained. constant wind speed to about 16 miles per hour. finally going to started to see them calm down as we head into the 8:00 hour. 5 to 10 miles per hour. that is always good news that's going to help our temperatures

bitterly cold 14 below. these are some of the coldest temperatures of the season so far. windchills are just not playing nice. let's make sure we have double layers throughout your afternoon. this is that well defined cold front. it continues to sag towards the east. it's going to continue to cool off most of the area as we head into the rest of the day. let's talk about your advisories across the board. windchill advisory until 10:00 a.m. sunday. tonight we are going to be seeing single digit lows once again. nearly 15 to 20 by tomorrow morning i'll say tomorrow is the codest night of the season so far. also we have that lake effect snow advisory until 4:00 p.m. for lake, geauga county. another 4 to 6 inches of accumulation. hey, it's pretty quiet right now. we'll start to see lake enhanced snow start to pick up

taking a look at the power of 5. that's that moisture we saw. pretty steady last night. it continues to move out towards stark, summit county. this is just not for primary snow belt locations. this is our lake enhanced where you can see heavier amounts of snow. it's not on the heavy side. even out towards wayne county. dealing with a few flurries. more towards ashtabula county all the way into northern sections. hour by hour, you'll start to see a little bit of snow picking up. it's not mixing in with rain. you can see our temperatures not even nearing 20 degrees. do want to show you our future cast here from geneva. you can see the steady amount of moisture moving into madison, ashtabula county as we head into mid afternoon. it starts to hit medina, northwestern portions of rich land into ashland county as we

going to see a lit bit of sunshine, actually, throughout the day. as we step into about 2:00 you can see another batch of moisture from sandusky, erie, huron county, northern parts of cuyahoga then it starts to sweep in here as we head into the 5:00 hour. it is valentine's day weekend. we are dealing with bitter cold and more snow tracking into the area. 13 for today. the winds still going to be an issue as we head into tonight, haven't seen this in a while. down to about 1 degree. inland locations down to negative 20. >> 1 degrees. thank you. no cavs games this weekends. still a huge couple of days for the nba. it's all star weekend for toronto. some fans are questioning the coach of the cavs to lead the east in that game as andy baskin has that and a big moment for some former nba all stars.

all star weekend is underway in toronto. the game last night. the three point and slam dunk tonight. lebron and the coaching staff are representing the cavs in toronto this weekend. now despite the fact the team has gone through a coaching change, david blatt to tyronn lue, the cavs still have a three game lead on the raptors. >> just being able to be around the best players of the world and enjoy the weekend, something i just want to enjoy. sit back and take it all in and hopefully one day look back on it and talk about the situation it happened and being in this situation and be able to enjoy it. >> there were some doubters of him even coaching the team in the first place. he's only coached 11 games and he is the head coach of the eastern conference. seems kind of odd. a lot of folks thought maybe once coach blatt was fired that they shouldn't have sent a coach at all. lebron addressed that issue yesterday in media day.

secondary roads. let me flip you around. these roads for the most part look really good. you can see the -- down the middle here there's that strip snow. but i want to make sure that you guys realize obviously it's so cold out, this could freeze on the roads. so really make sure if you are heading out this morning that it's a two hands on the wheel kind of day. with the wind and the possible icy, slushy snow, you could be slipping on the roads. a lot more snow on the secondary roads i was talking about. blowing, drifting snow. because of this wind it could be making your visibility less on the roads. here just in front of you, not necessarily down the road. because of the road in front of you. make sure you're paying attention. we've seen a lot of plows out this morning along on the highway and a lot of private plows in the city of chardon.

this time impersonating an nfl quarterback. he's accused of raping women across the country. the u.s. marshals have been tracking stephen pitman for years. he's made a living impersonating heisman winner vince young. pitman is a convicted sex offenders. he failed are renew his registration. investigators have uncovered plenty of additional dirt. >> taking money, picture with kids, hospitals, it's been real sick. he's a person and hopefully we can bring him down. >> the u.s. marshal's office says he frequented the bars in cleveland, sometimes posing as young. a nuclear reactor in northeast ohio has been shut down for repairs. plant officials tell the plain dealer the 1300 mega watt plant

good morning. i'm power of 5 meteorologist janessa webb. waking up to bitter cold temperatures. another element. we are not out of the clear for lake effect snow. i want to show you the timing on this thing. as you can see bands of moisture still going to be hitting ashtabula county, eastern portions of lake into rest of the day. we get a slight break. if you're not going to be seeing snow today, partly sunny conditions. sunshine breaking through. count on as we head into about the 2:00 hour that graphic moves too fast. we'll start to see another band from elyria into the greater cleveland area. a good shot of snow. also tracking snow as we head into next week. all the way into wednesday afternoon.

we are down to 1 degree. some locations 15 to 20 below. we make a slight comeback. look at this. snow is likely throughout monday, tuesday and wednesday. then you're going to be nice to me as we head into next friday, near 50 degrees. cold temperatures right now. we are tracking it all weekend long. what are you seeing in storm tracker 5? i tell you what we're in chardon right now in the square area and it looks really good. the roads look wet. i want to show you what the roads look like. you can see that they're just wet. that is a concern. this could freeze very, very quickly. so again, if you're heading out on the roadways, make sure you keep that in mind because of these brutal temperatures this morning that we're experiencing.

this open letter to sue klebold saying i have forgiven you and wish you only the best. survivor. now 34 and married with four small kids. her shoulder was shattered in the shootings and now has limited use of her right arm. she says she still has panic attacks and remembers every detail of what happened that day in the lunchroom. she says she refuses to letten evil win. >> i don't have anger. i have questions. i would love to sit with either of their parents and just ask even as a parent myself now, wait, what did you see? like do you feel like you missed something? were you involved? >> reporter: others are responding in a different way 17 years after the shootings the pain is still there. >> every time this comes up again it opens that wound. >> part of the reason of the timing of last night's 20/20 interview, sue klebold has written a soon to be released

a dose of cold weather at the airport at 8 degrees. the more important story is what the feel like temperature is on your skin. look at this. wayne county. out towards massillon. canton. even up towards southern portions of cuyahoga county. i expect you to be this morning into 15 to near 20 below. pepper pike into independence. slightly, just slightly warmer out towards ashtabula county. because a little bit of moisture is tracking in. all morning long you're going to be noticing the winds and even into your afternoon. 15 to 25 miles per hour. and that's what's allowing for our windchills to be a major concern. that advisory is across the board. it's until 10:00 a.m. sunday. hopefully going to start to see that let up as we head into your sunday afternoon. and a little bit more warmer air trying to track in here.
