front of the front door of l.a. fitness where i was standing two seconds before. >> leaping flames and giant plumes of smoke add to the confusion. >> there was this huge -- almost like a son sick boom. we didn't though what it was. >> tonight our team of report incident. live coverage starts now. >> by now you may have seen this video. a propane tank is blamed for the explosion at the american greetings construction site. >> that tank caught fire and later exploded sending vibrations throughout the park. chris flanagan is live tonight at crocker park where he is uncovering new information about what went wrong. chris. >> reporter: frank, thankfully no one was seriously injured. crews are on scene trying to find out exactly how this could have happened. this all unfolded around 10:30

it was outside of the american greetings construction site. the fire was started near the two tanks and one of them exploded. it caused windows to be blown out. right now investigators are still trying to pinpoint the exact cause. that's not calming the nerves of those who were here when it happened. our sarah buduson dug into the background of the construction company. but first, kristin volk describes how the situation unfolded. >> reporter: chris, i spoke to a guy who works here at crocker park. he was in a parking garage behind me. that garage was next to the explosion. he said it was complete insanity. it was as if he was in a movie and a bomb had just gone off. and others farther away described the same sort of scene. >> there was this huge explosion. >> it was very loud. very loud.

caught on so many cameras today. >> it was a dangerous situation. >> reporter: a situation that sent 250 construction workers fleeing from this american greetings building. it caused parts of crocker park and near by health centers to close. >> we shut down for our patients and will reopen tomorrow. >> reporter: crocker road also closed as police, fire, and ambulance took over the area. >> we don't want the patients to come just to not be able to get in so we started calling the rest of our patients. >> reporter: clinics canceled for the rest of the day adding that one patient drove all the way from port clinton, arriving shortly after the explosion to find out she could not get down the road. american greetings, which will use this building as their new headquarters, tells me they do not know how the incident will affect their expected opening date, which is this summer. and in a statement, they say they are grateful for the first responders and thankful that there are no injuries. rachel, what works down the

her own safety and those around her. >> i got goose bumps right away and called my family, because it was one of those things. it was pretty intense. >> reporter: i want to give you a sense of just how big this incident was. that explosion happened a half mile down there off of crocker road. but all the way down hear at the corner of crocker and detroit is that brown building. we spoke to a woman who works inside that building. she says as soon as she heard that loud boom, she popped up, went to the window, put her hand against the window and she could feel the intense heat. kristin volk, newschannel5. >> the new headquarters was just months away from completion before the explosion. investigator sarah buduson has been digging into the background of the company that provided those propane tanks. >> reporter: chris, i just

it shows amerigas, a national supplier of propane gas, provided those takes. osha investigators were immediately sent to the scene. tonight they are still trying to figure out what caused the fire that led to the explosion. we do know amerigas leased the tanks to the construction company building the new office space last summer. safety records show amerigas was fined $9,000 for a safety violation in 2012. but there have been no issues at crocker parkp even though a construction worker told us he recommend heard the tanks were leaking. >> somebody mentioned something about they had some leaks that they took care of and a couple of days passed. >> reporter: so you had heard about leaks. >> yeah, but this is a pretty safe job.

heroin overdose. he was 19 years old. >> heroin, it's not a painkiller. it kills people. it takes them away forever. >> reporter: nick is one of at least eight heroin-related deaths in the last two weeks. lorain and elyria police reveal today they served five search warrants resulting in nine arrests of high-level dealers. police say the drugs zion these police photos were coming into lorain county from chicago. >> some of the drugs that the dealers owe the street dealers supplied to those that overdosed and died came from these guys. >> i hope they arrest them. i hope they get off the street because somebody out there is going to lose their child or their parent because of this. convicted those arrested face at least 11 years in prison.

of a case out of michigan that the country. they would not tell us any more details. this made some parents uncomfortable. school officials were forced to keep kids out of school after bedbugs were discovered at the high school. the doors to alliance high school were closed to students as a crew came in to chemically treat the school grounds. four bed burnings found over the last week at the school. the health department said they are confident the school is not infested and that the insects are actually coming into the school from somewhere else. school officials are asking parents to keep eight eye out for bedbugs in their homes. school is expected to be back open tomorrow. if you are in the kitchen right now, before you throw that frozen dinner in the oven or microwave you have to listen to. this nestle is recalling a number of product because there may be pieces of glass in it.
