the governor took the stage around 9:15 tonight to a thunderous ovation. he thanked hundreds supporters at tonight's rally, while flanked by his wife and two young daughters. in his victory speech he spoke from his heart thanking the democrats who crossed over and voted republican in the primary, even thanking marco rubio for his service after he dropped out of the race tonight. he never mentioned donald trump. did mention hillary clinton, said bring her on. and then he thanked all the people who traveled so far to support him. >> you know what? look, this is all i got, okay? this is all i got. and all i can say is thank you for the bottom of my heart. i want you to know something. we are going to go all the way to cleveland and secure the republican nomination. that he hits the campaign trail again tomorrow heading to philadelphia as he tries to capitalize on tonight's huge win. . >> okay, chris. and of course our john costic has been keeping track. and what does this mean for the rnc. >> reporter: the first results to come in for the night, florida, where the polling held up and donald trump beat the favorite son marco rubio by an almost 20% margin. hillary clinton also carrying florida 2:1 over sanders. tom sutton joining me our political analyst to talk about marco rubio, suspended his campaign ten minutes after the last polls closed. what does this mean for kasich going forward? >> kasich becomes the only alternative to ted cruz and donald trump. he started at 17th, came down to the last three, and the establishment, from moderates, for independents, really he is the only choice they have going forward. >> reporter: other races,

and much more intense. we're looking at a final three going forward. we'll see the attacks rise, more money spent and john kasich is facing a new ballgame. >> reporter: and with donald trump to win the nomination he would need to win 60% of the delegates in the remaining states, something he has not been able to do in any of of the states. so that's something we'll be talking about in a couple of minutes because we are looking at a contested convention. >> aboslutely. >> reporter: back to you. >> despite losing to kasich in ohio, donald trump still has quite a few wins to celebrate. >> and he's doing it from florida, his biggest victory of the night. trump told the crowd at his rally he is bringing new voters to the republican party saying he is the reason for the increase in voter turnout and new voters. >> we have something happening that actually makes the republican party the biggest story anywhere in the world. everybody is writing about t all over europe, all over the world they're talking about it.

to vote. this was an example of it today. >> trump also said he talked to senator majority leader mitch mcconnell today and said they've got to bring the republican party together. he congratulated marco rubio for running a tough cane. marco rubio suspended his campaign tonight after a humiliating loss in his home state. rubio was once considered the g.o.p. favorite and the one to beat but that changed when donald trump picked up steam. cruz is running a close second behind donald trump in the delegate count and right now both tie in missouri. as for the democrats, hillary

win over bernie sanders in the buckeye state as expected. frank wiley has a look at how the democratic primary played out in other states and what hillary clinton and bernie sanders are both saying tonight. >> reporter: recommend from the democratic party the states at stake are not winner take all but hillary clinton cleaning up on delegates. florida went to clinton. she beat sanders this, 64-33. north carolina, that was not far behind. clinton heeding this. 55-41. and bernie putting up a fight in illinois. we'll keep you posted on the numbers. that's what you see right there, 51-47%. then voters in missouri going to the polls. tonight deciding on the division of 71 delegates. right now, bernie sanders has a slight lead with a 4% lead. 48-51%. now, clinton celebrating her

[ cheering ]. >> reporter: again, sanders is in arizona where the voters had head to the polls for their primary next week. both utah caucuses are on tuesday as well as well as the democratic caucus in idaho. >> ohio can't have an election without a few glitches. four county kept their polls open after problems there. >> we have answers at the board of elections tonight. >> reporter: it wasn't voter confusion that took mace on cleveland's west side. it took place at the dfw starting early this morning and parts of the early evening hours. members of dfw 2533 told newschannel 5 that a dozen voters

location so those voters had to be turned away. the dfw members said they saw cards showing this address. they believe the cards must have been old or incorrectly printed. >> they wanted to know where they could vote and we said we didn't know. we haven't been voting for -- they haven't been voting in this post for two years now. >> reporter: and the county board of elections is checking into this issue. they told me they have not received a formal complaint about this problem as yet. meanwhile it was tense moments at the polling place at louisa may alcott school. a worker allegedly pulled a gun at that location. he showed the gun but did not point it at anyone while he was making verbal threats. he was arrested without incident

caused the situation. so the vote count continues here at the board of elections warehouse with 38% of the vote now accounted for. joe pagonakis. there were glitches at the polls in florida today as well. take a look at this, remember, time of 2000. poll workers had to use paper books to register voters in orange county after connection problems with the computers and voters at two polling places in the same county say they were ballots. the presidential nominations are the only thing on the ohio ballots today. >> there were local issues and races, including a challenge for one of the most controversial seats in cuyahoga county. will there be a new prosecutor? not just fun and games, the rally

today's primary wasn't only about the candidates. folks who live in jasper had a hot button issue. >> there was an issue to allow for apartment and complex building. it is 73% against and 27% for. the cuyahoga prosecutor race was one to watch as well. o'malley challenging mcginty after mcginty had several drama filled years in the prosecutor's office with 50% of the vote in o'malley leads 54-36%. megan hickey has been in contact with both candidates tonight. >> what is the latest? >> reporter: with just under half of the precincts in o'malley is

candidate the nominee tonight is effectively -- will effectively become the prosecutor. mcginty has served as prosecutor for the last four years and has come under fire for the handling of high-profile cases involving 12-year-old tamara rice and cleveland police officer o'brio. o'malley said he will change the way police cases are handle. win or lose his campaign will have helped raise questions about mcginty's policies. >> i am not victorious i think the community has gotten ahead because of my campaign. ask questions to propose more changes that he would have not proposed had i not been out here campaigning so i think the community as a whole has won. >> reporter: now, i have been in touch with mcginty's campaign as well. he did not want to give an interview until all the results were in.

heading that way. >> it looks like we may be going that route. we look at john kasich and see he's won in ohio, convincing, not by a narrow margin, but almost 10 points. we can see that kind of thing in many states to come. we could see him picking up delegates here and there, not to clinch a nomination by any stretch, but to deny the possibility of an outright nomination for donald trump. >> with kasich winning ohio, for him to win the republican nomination, that's not go to happen, donald trump needs to win 60% going forward he hasn't come close to that so we are headed into that direction so i imagine behind the scenes is where the manoeuvring be taking place. >> absolutely. we're looking at the factors like who picks the delegates. the 3/46 the delegates get picked by the state parties not the candidates.

evangelicals who are splitting between them. and there's no other choice, it's just kasich if you're one of those folks that is not fitting the cruz or trump model. >> the kasich folks putting out the rubio folks are going to break 3 to 1 in favor of kasich with him now suspending his campaign and suspending is important to note as well because what does that mean when he does that. >> essentially that means he holds that delegates going into the convention, he has 163, a few more some other states coming out of tonight, so he's still a power to be dealt with and could be a factor in determining the outcome of this convention. >> donald trump not going to be so nice with john kasich going forward. >> we thought the arrows were out coming into ohio. we haven't seen anything yet. trump is going full bore, probably more against kasich than cruz. >> thank you for your insight. a big night for ohio.
