give up just yet. i'm nick foally alongside meteorologist georgia net webb. we talked about it this morning. the chill is back. >> winter doesn't want to go out. we will step into spring tomorrow. but we are tracking on the power of 5 a few raindrops and a fewflakes for the start of spring. but this morning, wow, we are off to a very chilly start. you can see most locations below the freezing mark. good morning. mansfield, you're currently at 29 degrees. out towards holmes county, killbuck, good morning. you're currently at 36. a little warmer air tracking in from the south. let's take a look at power of 5, live radars. we aren't picking up any moisture now. it's well towards our south. you can see it's mixing in with a little bit of rain and snow. i do think several locations throughout the afternoon, you can see a few rain to snow drops in that area, but the track on this system is looking

also the winds today, 15 to 20 miles per hour out of the northeast. and that's really what's allowing for the cooldown that we're seeing. pretty consistent throughout your saturday through sunday afternoon. unfortunately, we're going to be stuck in the 30s for your weekend here a. little bit warmer as we head into sunday after we get over a little a.m. snow. i'm going to show you in just a few minutes the track on that system. nick? . >> layer up. all right. thank you. breaking news overnight. police arrested the man they say is responsible for the murder of a missing man. meg shaw has breaking details about the arrest. what's happened in this case? >> reporter: nick, police tell me 36-year-old lance rankin is now in custody at the hospital after leading them on a short chase just after midnight. they say the chase ended when rankin crashed into a state highway patrol car on interstate 77 north in canton. rankin was wanted for the

who police found inside rankin's home in the 1200 block of whirly street. that happened just before 9:30. then, just hours later, canton police say they spotted rankin's car heading northbound on 77 near the cleveland avenue south exit. they attempted to stop his car. then that's when the chase began. the state highway patrol tells me they deployed road spikes to help stop rankin. he swerved to miss the spikes, and hit the cruiser, ending that chase. rankin suffered injuries during the crash, but police say they are nonlife- threatening. rankin has a lengthy criminal history and several other outstanding warrants. the i.d. of the homicide victim has still not been released this morning. police are still trying to contact all family members. . a cleveland police officer arrested for felonious assault. happened yesterday morning

the incident involves a female acquaintance of man's. he's been with the department since november 2013. cpd has suspended him without pay until the investigation is complete. new video this morning out of a crash that injured two brettanol police officers earlier this month. take a look at that impact. the body cam footage from one of the officers shows they were on east 140th and lake shore boulevard when an intoxicated driver rear ended them. that driver was arrested for ovi. and dash-cam video showing another crash, this time outside of dayton. police believe an 18-year-old woman stole a car that led police on a dangerous chase. you can see her crossing the centerline before officers say she ran a red light, and slammed into another car. the driver of that car died. right now, the suspect is under arrest, facing multiple charges. well police found a missing missouri teen hundreds of miles away in a home here in stark county.

behind bars, accused of kidnapping that girl. eric shotwell faces charges of rape, kidnapping, and assault. investigators say he held the 14-year-old girl against her will inside a home in mier in have a. they believe the two chatted for month on a social media app before shotwell drove 760 miles to missouri to pick her up. >> keep an eye on your kids. stressing the importance of, you know, being safe with social media. >> now, police in stark county say the teen was able to catch her mom. officers traced social media, and found her at that home. shotwell asked for an attorney, and was arrested. happening today, protests are planned at the summit county fairgrounds during today's gun show. the fairgrounds are hosting the ohio gun and knife military show today, and in protest, the gun violence prevention issue team of summit county will be protesting starting at 11 this morning.

most died in the attacks or were killed by police. . investigators think he may have been the driver -- suicide bombers. his brother is believed to be one of those who blew himself up that night. just hours after the attack, salaam was stopped by police, driving with friends toward the belgium border. he was questioned, but not arrested. a day after salaam and a friend in brussels. he was caught on surveillance video at a gas station again at the belgian border. questions remain over salaam's role in the attack. investigators say his dna was on a suicide belt discarded in a paris to burr,, attacks. they say he was spotted buying detonate from a fireworks shop in paris. authorities have been working under the theory he

up, but backed out at the last minute. after the initial sighting following the attack, the trail for salaam apparently had gone cold. some officials assumed he fled to syria. now we know he didn't stay long. >> that was erin reporting. on the campaign trail, another trump rally, another day of protests, this time in salt lake city. hundreds gather outside the venue the presidential candidate was set to speak at, some with signs comparing trump to hitler. police had to work quickly to shut the doors at the infinity center as protesters tried to get inside. >> he would not be the choice for president, and i think he would lead us in a terrible decision. >> cops in riot gear were dispatched, but for the most part, things remain tense, but peaceful. utah is among the next round of states to go to the polls. its primary is tuesday. former presidential

lot of pull with utah's voters. he's throwing his support behind ted cruz in the upcoming primary race. the former mass governor posted on facebook that donald trump repulses him, and he'll be voting for cruz come tuesday. "endorsement." he has encouraged republicans to engage in strategic voting to stop donald trump. meantime president obama is urging the republic led senate to least consider his circuit court nominee merritt garland. leaders have agreed not to confirm any nominee from president obama. the president is pushing back, saying garland is supremely qualified, and is ready for the public relations war ahead. >> he is prepared, i think, to take on whatever unfair or unjust or wildly exaggerated claims that

just opposed to any nominee that i might make. >> this fight shifts over the next two weeks as republican senators head back to their home state. activists on both sides plan to hold rallies on the local level, including here in ohio, to try to shift land. new details this morning about the huge victory in court for former wrestling great hulk hoe began. a florida jury awarded hoe began $115 million in his invasion of privacy suit against gawker media hoe began sued gawker for posting 2 minutes of a sex tape featuring him in 2012 in a statement, a spokesman for hoe began says he is exceptionally happy with the verdict. the court will reconvene monday to decide on punitive damages beyond the 115 million. gawker's founders have promised to appeal. a gasoline mixup is causing a nightmare for at least 100 drivers in washington state. the company that fills the gas tanks at a yakama

nell the unladied tanks. many of the drivers who filled one the unleaded fuel only got a few yards before their car stopped. the company said they're doing everything they can to fix the problem. >> our insurance company has sent out with a couple local garages and towing companies to help get the customers taken care of without money out of their pockets. >> well many are asking how does this affect 100 cars before anyone even noticed the problem? to make it on tiger woods the highway with the regular gasoline in their tank before the -- started to cause problems. that's not a good problem to have. not an easy fix when you get diesel and regular gasoline mixed together. vanessa joining us far look at weather. maybe a little chill year than we wanted this morning. as we start this weekend, maybe next couple days. >> we have to be patient. spring will show up, and it's going to be late next week.

>> unfortunately for the start, 12:30 a.m. tomorrow we are going to be on the chilly side. if you are just waking up, you're seeing cloudy skies across northeast ohio. our temperatures, they are below normal for this time of year. we see a day-time high of 48 degrees today. we will not step out of the 0s for most locations. good morning. out towards mansfield, you're currently at 29 degrees. lake, should be county into the upper 20s. we're sitting at the freezing mark -- below the freezing mark at the airport currently. now, our radar is not picking up any moisture in our viewing area. you can see just a few stray showers out toward mansfield. it's on the isolated side. going to be moving out of here, out toward shelby fairly quickly. it is on the light side. you can see well towards it south, though, this is the brunt of that storm system we are tracking. you know, the track on this thing is going to make a

of accumulation that we see as we step into your sunday. right now, from cincy all the way into charleston you can see it's kind of that wintery, rain, snow mix. outside today. look at our temperatures as we step into about 1:00. we'll be sitting at our high 36 degrees. if you're going out tonight, we'll remain into the lower 30s, but we are tracking that northeast hour. so that brings the feel-like temperature down very quickly. it's going to feel like we're in the upper 20s. so this is that system that's going to make its way across the carolinas and turn into a nor'easter as we head into next week. this is the potential for a good amount of snowfall for portions of the east coast, southern locations and northeast ohio could see a little bit of snow here. so futurecast, i'm going to show you overnight, we

but then a little bit of snow starts to slide in here around 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. dover new philly into stark, summit county, wayne county. going to be on the isolated side. we clear out for most of the afternoon. it's late afternoon into about 4:00. then our temperatures rise to the 40s. so we're looking at a possible rain snow mixture. then high pressure is going to build once again, and we're going to be sitting under sun going into your monday. so accumulation total on this system, really not impressed. i think we're less than an inch. trace amounts for most spots. 36 for today. nearly 10 to 15 degrees below our normal for this time of year. it's going to be a chilly night, folks, so bundle up. 26. get that heater cranking for the week. then we're going to turn it off. the 7-day forecast, we are the come-back kids, tuesday afternoon, 57, 60 by thursday. >> fast-forward to the 60s, please. the cavs stay in the win

browns head coach phil jackson in attendance. interestingly enough,goff's hand size was measured an 8th of an inch larger than the 9 inches reported tat combine. he completed 61 of 69 passes. that's it for morning sports. >> thank you. moving to -- favorite story of the morning. after investigating, canton police cracked the story. they found the girl who donated her allowance to buy protective vests for police canines. the police department shared this picture on facebook of 11-year-old alison meeting officer ryan davis and his new canine tuko. alison sent the letter along with her donation, this letter saying she was sorry about the death of days's former canine partner educate row. jett row of course shot and killed by a suspect during a stake-out earlier this year. there was no envelope with the letter when davis got it; but thanks to social immediate y he was able to track alison down and thank her in person. coming up, we are

now, power of tracking a little bit of moisture. you can see it's slicing in here well towards our south. the good news, i think it will be confined to the southern locations. it's predominantly sitting in wayne county towards it south, into millersbu are,g, walnut creek. you're seeing a little bit of moisture here, but going to be moving out fairly quickly. for the rest of us, i think we stay under mostly cloudy conditionsful hopefully a little bit of sun going into the noon hour. but look at our day-time highs. i almost hurt your feelings a tad bit there. 36 degrees, nick. that's about 10 to 15 degrees below our average for this time of year. in my 7-day forecast, i am going to show you when we return to the 60s. >> we talked about janessa winter not wanting to let go without a fight. breaking news overnight. a police chase in canton ends with a murder suspect in custody. this morning. she's been following this story all morning long,

>> reporter: i just spoke with canton police a little bit ago. they told me lance rankin is in police custody after he led them on a short chase after midnight. he was wanted for the murder of a missing man. canton police say they spotted rankin's car heading northbound on interstate 77. they initially tried to stop his car, but rankin took off. that's when the ohio state patrol got involved. they deployed road spikes on 77. they say rankin swerved to miss the spikes, causing him to crash into their cruiser off the side of the road. he suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, and was taken to the hospital. no one else was hurt. and just hours before police issued an arrest warrant for him around 9:30 after they discovered the body of a missing man inside rankin's home in the 1200 block of whirly street. police have not released the name of that homicide victim. they say they're still trying to contact all family members.

channel 5. thank you. also a suspect in custody charged with firing multiple shots on cleveland's east side, and then running from police. police tell us they responded to the area of the street. investigators add the suspect you see here was neighborhood. police,, however,, did not identify him. and a strange case involving former world boxing champion kelly pennsylvanialik. pennsylvanialik indicted on felony assault charges by a grand jury for allegedly shooting a man with a pellet gun on his property last august. the man said he was helping dig a lake on pavlik's home when he was shot in the head and arm. pavlik's attorney said he expects him to be cleared of all charges. the family and friends of a teen shot and killed by police will gather tonight to remember his life. eighteen-year-old brandon jones was killed at the parkwood grocery store one year ago this week. police say he charged at them

breaking into the store. his hour believes otherwise, and now she's suing the department for a wrongful death. >> this family has been extremely gracious and patient throughout this year, but it does not alleviate the excruciating grieving that they've had to endure while the investigation is outstanding. >> the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. tonight's vigil is set to take place at parkwood and prim rose, the site of his death. a new video has been released of a dramatic multivehicle crash that resulted in one car plunging off a kentucky bridge and into the ohio river below. the accident happened tuesday in campbell county when the crash caused a red pontiac grand property to flip off the bridge and into the river. water rescue officials found the car at the bottom of the river, and were able to secure it with a line, but add it will be some time before divers can get to the car because of strong currents. >> this river is very

we have to have the current, the speed of the current in a certain position before any of these divers can do their work. >> when we contacted county police about a missing person who drives the same type of car, but investigators say no conclusions will be made until drivers get to the car. the state attorney general has rejected one group's effort to get a medical marijuana question on ohio's ballot. mike dewine's earlier rejections were in july, october, and january. dewine's office is the first stop for any proposed ballot measure. the group plans to work on the amendment, and resubmitting it for approval. hundreds of people in the cleveland area who rent through air bnb will soon start paying taxes to the county. beginning april 1st, the popular web company that helps people list and rent lodging will collect tax at the same rate as hotel guests: 5.5%. in the past year, more than 16 guests rented rooms

right now across the board, most locations below the freezing mark. good morning, illyria. you're at 31, 27 out toward should be county. you make your way inland, canton and akron into the lower 30s. now, you can see this moisture that we're tracking in here, and it's sagging well toward the south. seeing a little bit of isolated activity from mansfield into the lucas area if you're traveling along 71 south, but moving out fairly quickly. but most of us sitting under cloudy conditions. the brunt of this system is sagging well towards our south into cinci, all the way into charleston. you're dealing with kind of that wintery mix. ohio. i do hope for a little bit of sun, but it looks like we're going to stay under mostly cloudy conditions. our day-time highs well below normal. only going to see that high of 36. if out and about, no threat of any moisture, but definitely cooler temperatures.

we're going to step into spring. this is overnight here. you can see we're under mostly cloudy conditions, a-ok. temperatures into the lower 30s, but by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, stark, summit county, into dover new philly, you're going to see a few flakes flying out towards that area. i do think lake-shore communities, we remain on the dry side. then we transition. look at our temperatures. they bump back up to the lower 40s, and the brunt of this moisture that will be moving in around 4:00 a rain-snow mix, even possibly a little bit of so definitely going to make the pavement wet out toward that area. but behind it is high pressure, and that's going to allow for us to clear up really nicely going into your sunday evening. accumulation totals on this storm system, they're not impressive. this is not shovable snow. under an inch of accumulation, probably just trace

in lake county's metro park system. trees abound here. they include maples planted by no man. nature did the planting, and springtime puts its hand on what the maples will give. andy mcgovern over there has cooked some sap from a maple, and he figures springtime sap will turn into year-round syrup for his breakfast pancakes. >> this is how it's done. it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. >> reporter: so build a fire, and cook the sap. figure i'd lend a hand in boiling away the water in the so that's left is pure and sweet maple syrup. matthew and i celebrated the season and squad on about miles per hour starting our own line of maple syrup sales. >> uncle andy. >> reporter: maple syrup. >> there were probably uncles

popping up with the flowers. >> reporter: most of us in my ohio feel that way, i suppose. some even capture sights of spring by painting them on canvas. at the lake metroparks art show, free day france teaches art. she knows her way around a paintbrush pretty well. rita is inspired about spring, because it is about -- >> renewal. there's renewal, regrowth. it's inspiring to me. it makes me feel like you're waking up, basically, from a long winter. there's usually other types of butterflies that come as well to these bushes, so it's just a lot of activity going on. >> reporter: our back garden is all of northeast ohio. when spring peaks in, celebration walks in with it. nature has put away its winter coat, donning a lighter jacket in the lake metroparks glenn area,

on a walk, she promised me sharp views, even early in the season. she was right. >> you get to see all kinds of beautiful native ohio wild flowers, but there's also the amphibians that migrate, like spotted sal la handers. you can hear the spring peepers peeping. >> reporter: this is our area. it's called penitentiariry glenn. it was named that in the 1800s. somebody felt this area resembled a penitentiariry or a prison. one hundred-foot high always leading up from the gorge all the way up to the top. penitentiariry. easy to get n hard to get out. but we'll try. we climbed the 141 steps out of the gorge. a spring in our walk, of course,. this season means new-born babes in their forest dens, barn-yard births, too. the sap bucket is back, catching the maple tree's offerings. the sweet smell of spring syrup

moving into portions -- southern portions of stark county, you're seeing a few flakes, going to be moving out fairly quickly. the rest of us, throughout your afternoon, look at this: cloudy skies. we'll stay under -- by 2:00, we should be our day-time high of 36. that's about 15 degrees below our normal for this time of year. on my 7-day forecast, i'm going to show you when we lower 60s. >> all right. thank you. breaking news out of canton. police have arrested a man they say is responsible for the murder of a missing man. meg shaw has breaking details about the arrest this morning. m,g, what happened? >> reporter: canton police told me lance rankin is now in custody after leading them on a short chase just after midnight. they say the chase ended when rankin crashed into a state highway patrol car on interstate 77 north in canton. rankin was wanted for the murder of a missing man, who police found inside

block of whirly street. that happened just before 9:30. then, just hours later, around midnight, canton police say they spotted rankin's car heading northbound on 77 near the cleveland avenue south exit. they attempted to stop his car. that's when the chase began. the state highway patrol tells me they deployed road spikes to help stop rankin. he stopped to swerve to miss the spikes, and hit the cruiser, ending the chase. rankin suffered injuries during the crash. he was taken to the hospital for treatment, but was released. rankin has a lengthy criminal history and several outstanding warrants. the i.d. of the homicide victim has still not been released this morning. police are still trying to contact all family members. in the newsroom, meg shaw, news channel 5. a lot of tense moments before police tracked that suspect down. thank you, m,g. a cleveland police officer arrested for felonious assault. happened yesterday morning

that's when the ohio state highway patrol got involved. they say rankin swerved to miss the spikes, causing him to crash into their cruiser off the side of the road. he was taken to the hospital, but was released. no one else was injured. and just hours before, around 9:30, police discovered the body of a missing man inside of rankin's home in the 1200 block of whirly street. police have not released the name of that homicide victim. they say they're still trying to contact all family members. in the newsroom, m,g shaw, news channel 5. >> okay, m,g, those agencies working together to catch that suspect. a suspect also in custody, charged with firing multiple shots on cleveland's east side, and then running from police. police tell us they responded to the area of the 3600 block of east 147th street. that was just before 7 last night. investigators with the suspect you see here in handcuffs was caught after a foot pursuit through

and a strange case involving former world boxing champion kelly pavluk. pennsylvanialik indicted on charges for allegedly shooting a man with a pell let gun on his property last august. the man says he was helping dig a lake on pennsylvanialik's home in canfield when he was shot in the head and arm. pennsylvanialik's attorney says he expects him to be cleared of all charges. the friends and family of a teen shot and killed by police will gar tonight to remember his life. eighteen-year-old brandon jones was killed at the ago this week. police say he charged at them with a weapon after breaking into the store. his mother believes otherwise, and now she is suing the department for wrongful death. >> this family has been patient throughout this year, alleviate the excruciating grieving that they've had to endure while this investigation is outstanding. >> the officer involved in the shooting has been

tonight's vigil for brandon is set to take place at parkwood and prim rose the site of his death. new video has been released of a dramatic multivehicle crash that resulted in one car plunging off a kentucky bridge into the ohio river boulevard. the accident happened tuesday when the crash caused a red pontiac grand prix to flip off the bridge into the river. water rescue officials found the car at the bottom of it river, and were able to secure wit a line, but add it will be some time before divers can get to the car because of strong currents. >> this river is very unfriendly now, very unforgiving. we have to have the current, the speed of the current in a surgeon position before any of these divers can do their work. >> a family contacted county police about a missing person who drives the same type of car, but investigators say no conclusions will be made until drivers can get to that vehicle. and happening today, a chance for you to take one step closer to earning a
