it's not just president obama heading to cuba today. leave ohio for havana this morning. more on the important work they'll do once they get there. plus new video of a bad crash that closed down part of the shoreway. all of this devastation likely caused by alcohol. the first day of spring overcast skies and take a look from edgewater park and some of you might be seeing some of that white stuff this morning. chairman conditions once again.

sunday morning edition of good morning cleveland. let's get right to that forecast because that four letter word starting with s is around and the first day of spring is here as well. >> people want to be outside but we are contending with a few flurries this morning. it's not going to be accumulation and out of here quickly. our temperatures on the cool side. i still want you to have that big winter coat handy throughout your morning. 32. good morning aleera out towards north ridgeville into avon lake sitting at the freezing mark out towards the east. you are below freezing inland locations talking about upper 20s so definitely off to a chilly start to spring. you can see from the power 5 we are contending with that moisture. it's on the light side in most areas. it won't be shovellable snow or any heavy accumulations. right now though starke, summit

blues and heavier bands in that area but scooting to the south as we go into the rest of the afternoon. day time highs only 37 so still about 10 degrees below our normal for this time of year. hold on here. my seven day forecast i do have 60s on the way. >> i'm holding out hope this is the last stand for winter. thank you. getting ready for a historic visit from the u.s. president today. president obama will become the first sitting president to step foot in cuba in over 90 years. it comes after a break between havana and washington including the easing of travel conditions and meg shaw joining us now on more on why kent state students are heading to havana. >> this is an amazing opportunity for kent state students among some of the first americans to be able to travel and study in cuba. now the ten students will be working on a site in havana

historic part of havana. they'll spend five days there studying the site. in addition they'll dedicate time to learn more about the cuban culture and their historic buildings. one of the students says this trip is a once in a life time opportunity. >> i'm just excited to go to that location and enjoy and not take for granted that every moment that we have there--i mean right now cuba is an interesting spot because development isn't there yet so you are really experiencing the genuine rebirth of havana. >> and also to further the relationship they'll be looking for ways to redevelop the old oil site. the group takes off today and will return next friday so best of luck. >> definitely an exciting time for those young people for sure. thank you meg. cubans fleeing the nation number hasn't gone down.

had to rescue a group of migrants affect their boat was stranded off coast. nine people died and 18 were rescued taken to dozen mel mexico by a cruise ship. a bad crash shut down parts of the shoreway. we know the name of the driver who caused that crash. 50-year-old frazier simms appeared to be under the influence when he smashed head on into another vehicle going the wrong way and didn't see the other car coming around a curve. it's an all too familiar story for anthony winne who was in another wrongway crash earlier this month. >> usually when two people hit head on what is the outcome? fatality. >> well luckily for everyone involved no fatalities in this most recent crash. simms remains hospitalized with critical injuries.

in the other vehicles sustained serious injuries but are expected to survive. no charmings have been filed. hudson police have identified the two bodies found in a home. officers say 53-year-old steven bias and his 42-year-old wife christie died from gunshot wounds. investigators are looking into this as a possible murder suicide believing he shot his wife and turned the gun on himself. it's been several months since an officer was shot- -since hurricane joaquin hit the east coast devastating thousands of homes. the conjunction with the united methodist church will head to south carolina for a week to rebuild some of the many homes still in need of work. they will sleep on church floors and eat in a church kitchen and the group will pay for it's own trip to lend a helping hand. and it has been several months since a richmond heights

good morning everyone i'm meteorologist janessa webb. spring has sprung, well kind of. temperatures are on the chilly side this morning but if you hold on we are going to start to see upper 50s and 60s as we head into your midweek. for today look at this upper 20s out towards wayne county just below the freezing mark for the airport this morning so definitely chairman temperatures across the board. now good news, most spots going to be in the upper 30s lower

we will see a few flakes flying throughout your morning. this is not any shovellable snow or heavy accumulation mixing in actually with a little bit of rain. 37 for greater cleveland, from pepper pike into beach wood at 38. i guess a little bit milder air out towards starke and summit county, 42 degrees. mike francis? >> so officially spring weather. >> new this morning out of georgia a bill that passed the state house is stirring up controversy. some call it discrimination against gays and lesbians. it is designed to protect faith based organizations who do not hire because of religious beliefs but if it is signed into law it could cost georgia big bucks. bills like these often result in boycotts. >> this legislation as it

it's going to have a significant impact on our business and i think it will have significant impact on other businesses in the state. >> businesses operating in georgia are already taking action. the nfl released a statement saying this could impact atlanta's bid for the 2019 super bowl. a local woman determined to become a marine is one strep closer to serving our country. first denied the opportunity because of a medical condition that was miss diagnosed. she took her case all the way to the white house and now she's been cleared for training. >> it's finally right there and i have so many of my supporters that are saying you are going and there's a lot of reassurance so i'm starting to get really excited because i can finally do what i've wanted to do so so long. >> she definitely can now.

on a main pedestrian shopping street. among those killed two duel nationality israeli americans and dozens others were injured. the islamic state or kurtish militants are believed to be behind the bombing. just one week after the most wanted man in salah abdeslam the legal justice system trying to get him back to france to face charges is under way. he admitted to interrogators he backed out of blowing himself up with other attackers in november but he is fighting extradition to france. in democracy 2016 candidates from both parties focusing their attention on the south west. several states in the region are part of the next round of primaries. bernie sanders reflected on his recent loss in ohio. >> it's a disappointment to be

i had hoped we had an outside shot to winning ohio and losing there by 15 points was a disappointment. >> sanders outlook on the rest of the race was more optimistic saying as the west coast starts to go to the polls in coming weeks he expects his delegate count to climb steadily. more controversy following donald trump in his bid for the nomination. trump's campaign manager appeared to grab a protestor by the color yesterday at a rally in tucson while the incident was captured on video. the man was yanked by someone to his left. the protestor had been asked twice before to leave. this comes after he was accused of assaulting a reporter at a previous rally. a massachusetts woman is letting it be known she's no fan of donald trump even after her death. she passed away this week and was so against the republican frontrunner she put it in her

her daughters say that his campaign is a whole new ball game in politics but not in a good way and asked friends and family not to vote for him in her memory. >> we just thought that this was her last way to get her vote in. >> she was not the first person who's obituary made an election statement. last year an obituary for a man in north carolina asked people not to vote for hilary clinton. back here at home the sea of cleveland still furiously working to get ready for the summer republican national convention. tens of thousands of out of towners will discend upon the city and they are all going to need help finding they are way around and paul found out cleveland has a plan in place to help them out. >> big crowds and a party atmosphere downtown for st. patty's day. >> volunteers are needed to present the city in the best light possible. >> jennifer kramer told me they are looking for thousands of volunteers to be greeters at airports and hotels and also need volunteers to help convention goers find their way to land marks and neighborhoods like ohio city and university circle, volunteers called way finders. >> do you know how to get to the square? >> no i don't know where that is. >> do you know how to get to little italy? >> don't ask me how i do but i do. >> we found people from here not exactly sure about some locations. imagine out of towners. 8,000 volunteers needed, 6,000 have already signed up. they will have to go to a training seminar. >> we need volunteers to come down to help people understand the new cleveland story, show case their pride, help them get around and make them feel welcome. >> that was paul reporting. a strange story emerging out of

it's so strange it could only really happen at ripley's believe it or not. thieves broke into the museum in times square and made off with interesting pieces of memorabilia. they left most of the more traditional items and went straight for the shrunken head collection. >> we still have the certificate of these items so whoever has taken these items there is no way to sell them legitimately for what they are actually worth. >> now the thieves also made off with a signed 1941 joe demagio bat replacing it with a fake. they aren't sure if it was committed by the same person. pope francis has been on instagram for less than 24 hours and has gotten more than a million followers. his first photo shows him kneeling in prayer and said pray for me in nine languages. his handle is his latin name.

twitter, the website says there's no need to worry about the 140 character limit going away any time soon. the chief executive and co- founder says the constraint allows for of the moment brevity after the recent news emerged they were considering allowing longer tweets. many users spoke out about the possible change. all of the runways going dark overnight. the los angeles airport shut off the p.m. loan lights as it celebrated earth hour. the worldwide event asked cities to turn out the lights from 8:30 to 9:30 local time. 350 world land marks participated including the empire state building, eiffel tower and cleveland opera house.

a good cause. >> i like that. >> supportive. joining us for a look at weather now. everyone is making their statement this hour in the climate change. >> definitely. >> so there is a change in weather coming but we've got to endure a little more chill. >> yeah you have to hold on. i know we are officially in spring now. we wave goodbye to winter early this morning and finally going to start to see a brief warm up as we head into midweek so you just needed to give the weather a little bit of time here. we are dealing with a little bit of wet pavement this morning but let me remind you we are snow deficient across northeast ohio nearly 30-inches below normal. you can see on the left hand of your screen out towards summit county akrin there's a little bit of snow fall currently flying in that area. temperatures across the board though, chilly start. good morning out towards home county. millersburg into killbuck

make your way up towards the west into avon lake, west lake 33 so slightly warmer but out towards the east madison into the orange area we are seeing upper 20s to lower 30s. get through the bulk of that moisture currently moving across all of our viewing area the great news that it is on the light side. these are just a little bit of flurries minuting in with a little bit of--mixing in with a little bit of rain later this afternoon as our temperatures warm up to the lower 40s. taking a bigger wider view, we are tracking this area of low pressure. this is that nor easter that's going to be effecting the east coast as we head into tonight all the way into monday. i think it's well towards our east really not going to be effecting us across northeast ohio. so hour by hour for your first day of spring, look at this. temperatures well below normal for this time of year. we are going to start to see the loss of that moisture going

day time highs of only 37 degrees. want to show you the future cast here. we'll stay under mostly cloudy conditions throughout your afternoon. no hope for any sunshine for today but you can see that moisture lull for about 1:00 but then temperatures rise to the 40s out towards starke, summit county and we see that change over of precipitation in the form of rain. it sags more towards the south going into about the 5:00 hour. by 8:00 p.m. we should be a okay. accumulation totals not significant here. 37 degrees so well below normal for this time of year. there is that northeast breeze 5 to 10 miles per hour. cloudy skies into tonight. we are going to lose that moisture and on the upper ward nick if you just hold on here a little sunshine for your monday into tuesday afternoon. we are dealing with rain wednesday into thursday but look at these temperatures.

many options as possible at the qb position. the cavs in miami last night to take on the heat, the games. on friday night they beat the magic in orlando. cavs were trying to get 2-0 on the florida road trip but not even close. a give and go between dwayne wade. first lebron gives it to wade then wade gives it back to lebron. cavs trail by 3. defense not great last night. late first quarter lebron's man wide soap josh richardson hits the three up 25-17. d wade overall having a good night up by 21. wade becoming 21st player to score 20,000 points with a single nba franchise as the heat win big 122-101. the head coach did try to make sense of what went wrong as he looked ahead to monday's game against denver and that's it

>> not a good showing for the cavs at all in miami. thank you lauren. other big stories as you see there. tears falling all the upsets happening in this year's ncaa basketball tournament prompting some to get very sad and not handling it well like this poor kentucky band member. she's called saxophone girl and come to be known as that trending on social media all morning her meltdown the result of kentucky losing to indiana. but the hoosiers were a five seed. try losing to a 15 seed state in that tournament. coming up changes could soon be coming to the way ohioans place their votes. and president obama will soon be on his way to cuba. we are looking into relations between the two countries ahead for his historical trip.

in a moment. first to check on meteorologist gentleman janessa. >> you can see flurries coming down. wet pavement out towards summit county. our temperatures are pretty chilly this morning so i still need you to have the heater cranking, the big winter coat below the freezing mark for the greater cleveland area currently at 30 degrees. let's show you the power five right now that moisture that continues to spread in on the light side. heavier bands into starke and summit county but it's going to be moving out fairly quickly. so your hour by hour unfortunately thermometer not going up too much today. some locations will be into the lower 40s but that's really pushing it. i think a high of 37 for greater cleveland as you are stepping out and about today. if you are going to celebrate the first day of spring by 5:00

really exiting at 35 so still need you to have the umbrella, the heavier coats, maybe even gloves today. we are going to talk about a warm up that's headed our way midweek coming up. >> that chill hanging a round a bit. thank you. a university of akrin football player recovering after one of his teammates accidentally shot him. doctors tell the journal that recover. he was shot in the stomach by a 23-year-old at their apartment building. he entered the apartment around 3:00 a.m. saturday. he thought he was a burglar and shot him. both agreed it was accidental and police say no charges will be filed. as president obama prepares for his trip to cuba students from northeast ohio are as well. a group from kent state's architecture school will spend five days studying in cuba thanks to the breakthrough in relations between havana and washington.

>> good morning nick. this covers a huge opportunity for architecture and design students. they'll be responsible for creating plans for future development in that area. the most important order of business is to spend time researching and collecting data from an old oil site in havana harbor. students say even though cuba is very different from cleveland the site where they'll be studying has architecture and historical buildings similar to those of northeast ohio. many hope this trip won't be their first and last. >> being the first round of people to be able to study there is really interesting and being able to make connections and hopefully future connections maybe even future job opportunities or anything like that can come from this interaction. >> the group of ten take off for havana today and will return next friday.

decades of tension between the u.s. and the castro regime focusing on trade and business opportunities along with a meeting of raul castro he will meet with political people. >> encourage them to continue to fight for the kinds of universal human rights that we deeply cherish in this country. >> but with political arrests on going opponents claim president obama is going back on his word that he would not travel to cuba until after human rights are improved. and critics raise concerns over weather the cuban people will benefit from the relationship between the two nations. >> he needs to be able to speak to the cuban people calling for free elections, a more liberal prosperity because communism has never done anything good for anybody. >> abc news havana. and a health alert this just issued for people traveling to and from cuba. the cdc issued a new warning

first case was reported this week. it's spread by mosquitoes and pregnant women are most at risk because it's believed to cause birth defects. while president obama is in cuba he'll be getting support in northeast ohio from one of the state's high ranking election officials. senator sherrod brown will be at the justice center tomorrow at 2 with other local leaders to urge state senate republican leaders to consider the president's nomination into the u.s. supreme court. brown plans to point in the last 100 years the senate has taken action against every candidate nominated. ohio voting laws are under scrutiny ahead of the presidential election challenging the state's golden week the days leading up to the election where they can register and vote at the same time. advocates for ohio's homeless population say that new regulations are creating hurdles for voters.

welcome back 8:44 on sunday where the violence donald trump campaign rally continues. last night in tucson a protestor was being escorted out of the venue when he gets sucker punched and falls to the ground.

kick him and stomp on him on the ground as well on the heels of the rally when a supporter sucker punched another protestor and is facing assault charges. if you are hoping for a cruz kasich 2016 ticket you are out of luck. ohio governor ruled out that possibility this weekend. while on meet the press yesterday governor kasich has no interest in becoming a running mate. earlier this week he also ruled out joining the ticket with frontrunner donald trump. kasich says he's still confident he'll pick up enough delegates in the western states to stay in the race until the rnc. the likelihood of a contested convention continues to grow as the region ago hotel base continues to grow as well. john has a look at that and more in this morning's edition of democracy 2016. >> good morning and welcome to the first day of spring which is often just another day of

this year promises to be different politically as things continue to heat up closer to the republican national convention. four months from today will be day three of the convention and what's going to be playing out down on the floor of the queue. governor john kasich ohio win increasing the likelihood of a contested convention. he may have enough to win on the first ballot. they are free agents after that. kasich's campaign announcing the hiring of four strategists this week involved in the task of coming up where they plan to put kasich delegates and identify ones they can win over. >> talking about the rules of the game when we talk about the selection of delegates that three quarters of the delegates get selected not by the candidate but by the parties in each of the states and something to influence and going into the convention the rules could be changed right up into the day of and into the convention itself.

on meet the press he told chuck todd the man who rushed him in a rally in ohio has ties to isis. >> you didn't see the clip. he was playing arabic music. he was dragging the flag along the ground and had internet chatter with isis and about isis so i don't know if he was or not but all we did was put out what he had on his internet. >> that protestor 22-year-old thomas was arrested by police. do those internet postings really tie him to isis. >> this was clearly the work of a pranker, somebody not related to him. and we even talked to experts and thought if he had isis ties. they said it's pretty clear this guy did not have isis ties or the government would not have released him. >> political claims as false. >> that protestor was arrested and charged in federal court. for more fact checks go to

finally south florida has a human python problem literally. more than 40 pythons weighing about one ton have been rounded up over the last months. one weighing 16 feet and- -measuring 16 feet and weighing it's the largest documented python in south florida. they are being used to help researchers learn about the species. they are getting there because people take their pets and dump
