. severe storms rolling true northeast ohio tonight. our cameras catching heavy rains, strong winds, lightning and thunder in downtown cleveland. reports of damage and tower outages are coming in right now. and take a look at these images just into the newsroom, a huge tree that came down on west 11th tonight. more than 25,000 people across the area are in the dark. we have been keeping you updated on all the storms all >> we saw over 700 lightning strikes, this is one cell that continued to gain strength across northeast ohio, first affecting richland county to mansville, and uplated to cuyahoga county. we -- uplifted to cuyahoga county. we are over severe weather concerns, things are dying down and our temperatures are dropping into the mid-70s right now. still tracking the wet weather, even though it's not on the severe side,

southern portions dealing with heavy lightning from north madison to south madison, north perry. we're not under an advisory for ashtabula but i am watching the cell as it tracks to the east. behind this moisture you can see some dry weather starting to make its way in. you were just talking about those reports, we have wind damage reports for richland county, seeing several trees, we'll probably get more reports of definitely damage northeast ohio. this is that dry air that's starting to make its way in from north to east. but we do have another round, i think about 3 a.m. we'll start to track another burst of rain, and some thunderstorm activity. i'll show you coming up the severe weather potential for the rest of your overnight, into tomorrow. i'm scared, he don't sleep night, not only for my son but all other people up.

torn apart by the heroin epidemic. tonight thousands gathered in akron at an event called "heroin is killing my town." we were there. this was a breaking part for a community that's lost hundreds of lives. >> reporter: yeah, really was. the man who put on this event tells me he's been to 30 communities over the last few years, some of the hardest hit by heroin. but he told me akro worst and deadliest he's ever seen. >> no more heroin! >> reporter: poison that has touched everyone, but there is power in numbers. >> no more heroin! >> reporter: hundreds gathered in akron tonight for an event called "heroin is killing my town" because here it's terrifyingly truer than anywhere else. >> akron is the deadliest in my eyes. >> reporter: the organizers has gone from county to county to fight

over the country and canada have pledged $1.4 million to build a center in akron. a sea of purple looking for a hero. the organizer is taking this event to florida next. then to illinois. he says he does plan to be back here telling me he was not surprised to see so much in while that gathering was taking place, someone was shot and killed just a few miles away. the summit county medical examiner says the 23-year-old was shot in the head in the 600 block of rosel avenue. he died at akron general. new at 11, sheriff's deputies in ottawa county are investigating after kids found a note in a park with a threat to shoot police officers. the report says there were six

next to them and dead cops written next to that. the note is specific, naming four people and how many times each would be shot and with what kind of gun. >> there was ammunition that was discussed, there were smoke grenades that were discussed, i believe there was dynamite that was written on there. so it's almost like it was a supply list of what was necessary to do whatever their intention was. >> the f.b.i. and all the police departments listed in the note. they're trying to figure out who was behind it. repeat juvenile offenders caught on camera and arrested over and over, it is an alarming trend that is in desperate need of a solution. tonight a 5 on your side investigation, can the cuyahoga county juvenile court do a better job? some cleveland detectives say

state based on statewide guide lines. >> it is developed by the university of cincinnati so all juvenile courts throughout the state of ohio are using this tool. >> reporter: ward pointed to stats that show juveniles taken into the system are down by 25% since 2013 but detectives believe that means standards meanwhile dozens of dealerships dealing with a half million dollars in damage caused by juvenile repeat offenders can only hope the system will improve. >> and this is like a game to them, you know. it's a costly game for us. it's devastating. >> reporter: and probation director dan ward said the system can get better because of our investigation. he's agreed to meet with detectives and the school district to see what can be done with repeat juvenile

we have been uncovering problems with it for months and now the police review board could get a major overhall. cleveland city council are vote tomorrow on a plan to have nine members on the board instead of seven. representation from all police districts and the new rule that no one can be a current or former employee of the cleveland police department. there was a hearing on the civilian police review board today where we learned there are than 400 unresolved complaints against police. if passed by city council tomorrow the plan to overhaul the review board will go before voters in november. if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. or the second amendment people, may there is, i don't know. >> donald trump sparking an uproar after making those controversial

rain that fell in akron tonight. we're tracking another round of storms and we'll hear when they will arrive in minutes. new information on delta's computer problems after a global outage of their system forced the cancellations of a thousand flights. more than 680 flights were cancelled today. the system used to check in passengers is still not up to speed. new at 11, the a.p.l. is investigating after numerous reports of dead animals found on a road of cleveland's west side. two dogs, and a pig were found in the area of brimsby road by the railroad tracks over the last few weeks. the apl says one of the animals did not die of natural causes. now they're trying to figure out if they were victims of cruelty. >> the circumstances around this and

concerning and suspicious. our role is to investigate reports of animal cruelty and abuse and neglect. >> the apl is asking anyone who may know anything about what happened to these animals to police call them. a worker at a subway shop in utah was arrested after a police officer who stopped by for a meal wound up high on drugs. police say the officer picked up his order at the drive-thru and had taken a few sips of his drink when he noticed something he had trouble finding the brake pedal on his cruiser on a red light and once he got to the police station he could not answer questions and drifted off. they tested his drink and found methamphetamine and thc. the worker was the only one who had access to the drink. police are wondering why. >> whether or not it was targeted at us as a malicious thing or if there was something done just to be

a new report from the cdc says the birth rate for women ages 15 to 44 is down for six babies to every 100 women. that's the lowest it's been since they started tracking it in 1909. birth rates have dropped 10% since 2007. that doesn't mean there are more infertile women. many are choosing not to have children. and there are fewer teens having babies. thousands of at money in the mail. at & t allowed scammers to charge land line customers $9 a month tore directly assistance that didn't exist and got a fee from the company each time a charge appeared on a bill. small businesses were the main target. at & t was ordered to pay nearly $8 million. $7 million will go to refunds, the other million goes to the u.s. treasury. back to the severe storms we

lightning. our mike brookbank caught this on camera tonight. mother nature putting on a show. now crews are cleaning up after her. trees are done in a number of areas and thousands are without power right now. a lot of lightning with these storms that move through. >> and not much -- we had some gusts, about 50 to 60 miles per hour just in certain spots, but the lightning show, i was counting -- >> intense. >> on our counter, we have 700 move up across cuyahoga county. severe weather. things are dying down as you can see from our cam here. it's almost like nothing happened across the greater cleveland area. the clouds very this started to split apart and we're going to sit under partly cloudy conditions before another round hits us overnight. so right now temperatures have

today for most spots. i want to show you from our power of 5, it was a pretty large hail that started in richland county, made its way up to medina where they are seeing massive power outages and trees down in that area. it's uplifted to the north causing severe thunderstorm warnings for cuyahoga geagua. we have rain falling, but not a heavy downside for geneva on the lake, ashtabula, heavy rain in that area. southern portions of summit county, to lake county, twinsburg getting over that rain. now, we do have one pesky cell that's starting to make its way off-shore, but probably still seeing some heavy downpours for north

moves to the east. look at this air behind that front that we saw that moved through, just dry conditions. we do have a little bit of tropical moisture that will lift up. around 3 a.m. i am expecting another wave to hit northeast ohio providing us with a little bit more lightning. we'll get a slight break for your early morning commute. contributing to the severe weather is the heat that continues to build, a southerly flow, we're seeing triple digits heat across texas and portions of the south. and that's making its way across northeast ohio. so, hour by hour showing you exact timing. things are starting to die down, but you can see still a few drops of rain and embedded thund you are throughout your overnight. around 4 a.m. then things clear out. we get a secondary wave tomorrow

up some more storms and accumulation totals up to an inch in some spots. we definitely need the rain, but it's never nice tracking severe weather that has damaging winds and hail, and we're going to get another dose of that tomorrow afternoon. so it will be a day of temperatures in the lower 90s, and we're looking at a heat index of 101 degrees. that means the temperature along with humidity high. this will be a five-day event with more rain in our next front tracking in saturday afternoon. it's looking to be like a
