>> and the branch came right through the roof in between all three of them. >> reporter: the trees on homes, cars, powerlines. it is something that people are dealing with all across greater cleveland as we'll check out the damage at two homes that were cut in half. another day and another round of storms as we continue to track activity across northeast ohio. right now we're keeping tabs on the flash flood watch across several counties in our area. it won't be lifted for days. >> reporter: well that's the hear, of course, after a week full of powerful thunderstorms that have brought down giant trees. some of them hundreds of years old. and they knocked out power to thousands. let's kick off the live team coverage with meteorologist tara blake and a deeper look at the flash flood watches. >> currently no severe weather in place or flash flood watch will begin saturday afternoon. but dark ominous clouds, you're in the counties sitting just outside of worcester will be some strong showers and

power of 5:00 and show you the heaviest rainfall rates upwards of two inches per hour. that's torrential rainfall. that's certainly going to be impacting any of those evening plans. right now headed towards shreve is a one-hour funk. you're seeing heavier rain as they head towards worcester, smithville, and orville. continuing on watching eerie county. good news over cedar point, starting to really find much lighter rain in place and about half of an inch per hour. ruggle beach is seeing an increase of moderate rain. but this is continuing to move over the lake and away from home. though toledo, you have an increase. we're not seeing that in our viewing area, but the showers and thunderstorms are packing a punch here as they march east over elmore. fremont will be next. this may just skirt the

to the north and east, so a lot of this energy is back and over lake erie rather than on top of us. but keeping a close eye on the storms as they continue to fire with the day's heating and your lake breeze. remember though this weekend, showers and thunderstorms will be widespread. that's what we have your flash flood watch three to five inches localized flooding is expected here tonight. it's going to be a bit more scattered in nature as temperatures are in the 80s. but we will keep you they impact the evening plans. guys? and now all new at 5:00 as we would race for the next round. the clean up is still happening after the powerful storms slammed us yesterday, leaving a trail of damage. paul kiska is live on 5:00 where two homes were pact -- live on 5 where two homes were practically sliced by down trees. >> reporter: yeah, very lucky people here that there were no serious injuries. this house across the street landed on the front of the house and had one come through the back of the house.

right through it. their neighbors across the street a similar deal, only a little bit worse. this huge oak tree was sliced right through the bedroom where the kids sleep at night. but fortunately this storm would hit in the afternoon. >> reporter: the pictures tell the story of just how fierce the wind was on elmwood road in west lake. this huge oak tree crushed the house of tim housley. >> >> my wife said you need to come home, the house is gone, extensive and the tree's crater massive. talk about a close call, listen to this. >> my wife was home with two friends watching the olympics. wind came, the tree came down, and a branch came right through the roof in between all three of them. >> reporter: way to cross the street. another close call. this time the tree split the house crushing the rooms of the homeowners two babies. but the family was in the living room at the top.

are counting their blessings today. across west lake, bay village, and other communities, it will be a long weekend of cleaning up. and coming up at 6:00 here on news channel 5, more pictures from this wild storm that you've got to see. live in west lake paul kiska news channel 5. now to a new channel 5 exclusive, a scary storm made even more more terrifying for an elderly couple in northeast ohio. mike brookbank shows us that the couple was trapped by their own trees. >> reporter: the walkway to the front door of the cleveland heights home now clear, but that wasn't the case just a couple days ago. the couple who owned the home were trapped inside after tuesday's microburst. those 80 miles per hour winds tore through nancy flooding's

the storm. >> we lost five major 200-year- old trees and a couple of others. >> reporter: those trees keeping her and her husband hostage in their own home. >> huge branches were wedged against the the entry ways. >> reporter: nancy and her husband were stuck inside for a couple of days until a tree removal service could come out and cut their way to them. >> we could finally get out of our house, which is a plus. >> reporter: nancy calmed her nerves with one of her favorite pasttimes. >> the stress of the impact hasn't set in yet, but nancy is prepared for what is to come. >> once everything is all cleaned up, that's probably when the melt down will come. >> reporter: nancy and her husband have only lived here since november. with all the previous landscaping now out of here because of the storms, they are staying positive and saying they can now style this their

you know, news channel 5 is always investigating. today letting cleveland public power know about a major communication problem out there. at the height of last night's storms, thousands of people on the west side lost power. news channel 5 staffers tried to get information on the phone, but only reached busy signals and disconnected numbers. plus the link for customers to report an outage online was broken. cpd told us they were not aware of the broken link and their overloaded. we just checked though and that broken link has been fixed. go ahead and check out the storm shield app to find out if there are any chances of watches or warnings in your community. storm shield also offers audible alerts, live interactive radar, and immediate updates on weather conditions across greater cleveland. a federal judge blocked an ohio law that has been allowed to take money from planned parenthood. ruling such laws are unconstitutional.

and today the victim's mother is sharing her grief as newly released 911 tapes that wi the gunman's start. here is abc. kouren-rodney thomas was fatally shot while leaving a house party early sunday. just moments after police say 39-year-old chad copley fired at him from his garage, killing thomas as he walked by. just moments after police say this 911 call came in from copley's house.

disturbing. all of this happened after a woman was arrested for drug -- drunk driving. she refused a breathalyzer, so they planned to draw blood from her and when they turned violent. you see it right there as they grab her and she tries to elbow him. he responded by slamming her into the chair and punching her head. the incident happened five months ago after asking questions. the officer was suspended. that is where they are getting off the streets, into the simulators. make training safer and more effective too, especially when it will come to the use of force. they feel that real life stress. >> if we train our guys under stress to have better communication skills that they will be better in handling the problems when they would

>> they will contain what will be happening in the officer's actions as they would have 100 different scenarios to start with. and two children are sick tonight after coming into contact with their affected pings. it is a new version of the flu virus known as the variant of age three and two and their symptoms are similar to the flu viruses. and they normally circulate marijuana use making roads into the mainstream over the past years, a new poll shows that almost 13% of the americans say that they would smoke pot. and that is nearly double the amount reported in the last three years. the study also found cannabis to be the most commonly used elicit drugs. right now the recreational use is legal in several western states. well, lee with a week like this you're looking forward to the weekend.

looking forward to it. >> if you were hoping that the weekend would be free and cheer of rain, think again. more will be coming as we do now have a -- we do now have a flash flood watch. we could see three to five inches of rainfall. so if you have had enough of the rain this week, go ahead and shove the curtains. you're going to see a lot more headed our way. the good news about this afternoon, the thunderstorms are popping, but they are not nearly as strong as what we had yesterday at this time. take a look we have been watching the rainfall moving towards you and it has arrived. a great picture here with the wetlands, certainly the wet roadways in place for us. any friday night practices for football. they are likely going to be moving out or indoors because of the wet weather in place. again, these are scattered across northeast ohio. we want to zoom in to that activity over worcester as they have greatly decreesed showerers and thunderstorms at one time producing upwards of

lot lighter now. watching the activity towards lodi. and it looked as though that it will still be expected to hit lodi. you may see a bit of the small hail. you can lodi now. and maybe if it holds together that it will be next as well. strong showers and thunderstorms are moving off to the north and to the east. we could hold it together. this is going to try and move towards cleveland, but a lot of this activity as it continues to move to the north and to the east is weakening a bit for us. but this line has intensified recently, so we are watching this for some strong

better, but it is increasing again in huron as we would seat showers and thunderstorms moving east. activity is picking up right now during the heat of the day. we would decrease the percentage just a lit -- percentages just a little bit as the heat are in action. but we do have the potential for the showers and thunderstorms, we will keep -- keep you updated. as for now we are good to go? cleveland. to see flooding, flash flood watch starting on saturday afternoon until 8:00 on sunday. that is 3-5 inches. in addition to the flooding we would have a marginal risk that is under flight, but still a risk of seeing severe weather, highlighted darker green is a risk of damaging winds. let's time out those storms for any plans for you. scattered activity that weakens here through 7:00. temperatures are going to drop tonight only into the upper

lower 90s that had be possible for your saturday, but scattered to numerous in the afternoon and evening. and then the other push on sunday with the official front. we do have that risk of seeing severe weather on sunday as well and notice those heavier rainfall for us here on saturday evening into sunday morning. and then it does weaken on sunday night with only a small chance for monday and tuesday and with so much moisture that it has been tapped into, you feel that mugginess. the numbers are at two to three inches in total. we will take a look at your power five seven-day forecast coming up in just minutes as we would track their storms yet

our top stories as we brace for more storms tonight. the clean up from this week's storm is still underway. two homes were basically sliced in half by trees from yesterday's storms in west lake. no injuries from those storms were reported. >> and in a scary situation for the cleveland heights couple as they were trapped in their home for a couple of days there after trees fell in front of every doorway to their home. the couple also lost power. thankfully that the neighbors were able them. the tree company tied up their -- cut up their trees today. news 5 is always investigating letting cleveland power know about a major communication problem. thousands of people on the west side lost power at the height of the storms yesterday. we only reached busy signals and disconnected numbers. we just checked and that broken link has now been fixed. all right, check in with meteorologist tara blake. what's the latest? >> first the rain, dark clouds,

give us a little light rain, but the dark clouds and storms are again away from the area. pop-up showers and thunderstorms are evident here on the power 5 doppler network. in lorain it's rather light. all that activity again over the lake, but farther south of lorain the potential of showers and thunderstorms to be moving in. we are watching a strong line of showers and storms forming now and intensifying. you can see coming up next, some of those numbers for you. 5:57 is willard. heavy rainfall with this. actually let's put on and see if we are noticing any other issues, maybe a little bit of hail within the strong line of showers and storms, also showing darker greens. that's good. we don't want to see any purples. that's when we could see the potential for bigger hail.

rivers are approaching their record levels and the governor of louisiana is declaring a state of emergency. >> this is amazing to me. how do you know that they would get this bad out here? >> and also from florida to wisconsin and to minnesota, the roads and homes are under water. >> i'm devastating. i don't know what will happen now. >> reporter: back with three inches of rain that will be falling in an hour. they warn that the risk isn't over yet. >> is a -- it is threatening situation. >> this weekend potentially life threatening conditions in other parts of the country because of excessive heat and the temperatures and the high humidity that will be expected to feel hotter than 100 degrees in much of the northeast. marcy gonzalez abc news new york. well even rio is not immuned from the nasty weather out there today and the host city of the 2016 olympics would have a rainy and foggy start to the day and look at that as it

about a 40% chance for that thunderstorm activity for us here as we will see temperatures in the 80 very humid and warm air mass and that you could get wet. possible delays, maybe even some real issues because that we are looking at showers and thunderstorms that will be trying to march in as a strong line that will get closer and closer and that we are quiet as you can see it at 90 degrees. we are seeing sunshine and added clouds out there. thesst heading to the east. we'll see if they could hold together and try to push into cuyahoga and that could be impacting some of those downtown plans. over to you.

network. but a much better ride home this afternoon and evening. that's not nice. here is a look at some dark clouds for you, but the lake county including east ciders, you are rather quiet. it is the west side that is noticing an increase for showers and thunderstorm activity. and kind of them stringing together to cause some real heavy downpours. let's focus in for it here in medina and they are seeing impacting driving on 71. we do expect to add plenty of lightning classes with this activity, but we are putting it on that it did not look like we were seeing any hail or extreme wind. no severe weather with this hail either. that just means it is showing you the indication of any hail. if it does fall that it will be very small and heavier rainfall over orville. so akron you're going to see an increase in half an hour from now.

the radar up. we wanted to make sure we were prepared here into the afternoon and evening and if those storms fired up so you would know exactly where they were towards willard and new london. but currently no hail with that particular area, but here where exactly are we at? and this with a little bit of hail for us. even if we could put on that tracker for you. they will show you where this is going. and as we rainfall for this and the potential for a little bit of hail for some of their locations, new pittsburgh at 6:29 you'll see those showers and thunderstorms headed towards union washington at 6:06. and chattfield at 6:51 noticing a bit of hail in this point and with this thunderstorm that will be headed towards willard. and also watching a bit of hail that will be falling a little bit further west at home as well. and that it will be the level,

to read these that they will be very small. you'll need an extra pair of glasses. and that excuse me at 6:23. so just to give you an idea of where the heaviest rainfall is as well with a bit of hail with some of these thunderstorms that they will be really at a hot point of the day. and that they were popping up, shifting north and east. and let's take a look at some of the cloud cover that we have noticed with a great shot. and this afternoon and th here in port huron with the heavy rainfall and hour by hour and storm chances anywhere from a 40% to 50% chance for the evening. if you do have plans on heading out, that we will be awaiting a cold front that is not even really going to clear the area until sunday. we will need to go through those three rounds of showers and thunderstorms, which is why we do have that flash flood watch in effect starting on saturday afternoon. in addition to the flooding that we also have the risk for severe weather and damaging

impressive, but a much better story yesterday. temperatures are not dropping too much yesterday in the upper 70s. that's a negative. but looking at some activity in the morning that it will be more in the afternoon with the day heating up again, especially into the evening hours with saturday at 6:00 and showers and thunderstorms in place, same stories for your sunday. we'll take a look at your seven- day forecast in just minutes. for now, frank and lee? conditions here in northeast ohio were not exactly at their best perseid meteor showers. take a look at this video from west virginia. a phenomenal scene. the annual meteor shower could be seen in clear conditions that is across the northern hemisphere. it is known to create some of the brightest shooting stars. those pictures are beautiful. >> breathtaking, right? >> yes. of course we are keeping a close watch on the other line of storms that will be making their way across the state. >> it comes after they are still trying to clean up from
