than louisiana. entire communities are submerged under floodwaters from heavy rains that started late last week. a state of emergency is in effect in louisiana. the floodwaters continue to rise. we have more on our story. >> reporter: the governor of louisiana says it right now was a working to get people out of there homes. they are trying to grasp this devastation while the death toll is expected to rise . >> reporter: the bayou state is underwater. incredible images coming out of louisiana and extraordinary water rescues caught on camera. this woman in baton rouge pulled from her sinking car just in the nick of time. more than 30 inches of rain in just a week triggered historic flooding and a state of emergency. at least 6 people are ted -- dead and 20,000 people rescued from the rising waters . even

it was historic levels of rivers and creeks rising. i will tell you we have not seen anything like this in the past. >> reporter: the us coast guard is in the air making daring water rescues. the national guard is on the ground. more than 200 roads are closed or impassable. >> we have road closures all across southwest louisiana. the water is dangerous in terms of the coverage on the roads. >> reporter: right now 12,000 people are in shelters of them grabbed whatever they could and others escaped with the close on the back. >> we got out the back door. there were spiders. >> we tried out the kitchen and there were snakes. we finally got in the car. we tried to leave but we couldn't. >> reporter: the president declared louisiana a major disaster. the weather is improving but the rivers continue to rise. the water levels are not expected to

nesack was killed in the botched robbery. if you know anything, call any police department in tell them what you know. this is dramatic video of a fire roaring through a cleveland westside house. jon rudder was in the sky as the story unfolded. he has more on this mornings fire on cleveland's west 56 street here air scene before firefighters. firefighters got to the scene around 6:14 here couple of minutes later they had the flames not down. by 6:23 those flames were mostly out. you can see transformers were blowing and even a tree catching on fire. there are a lot of pop some flashes you are seeing on the screen. the back part of the house

we got confirmation that that home was indeed make it. is unclear how this fire started. we will follow-up and bring you the latest. it is that time of year again, that school bell has wronged. students in the metropolitan school district went back to the classroom today. this marks the first day of school for cleveland students. in some cases the students were welcomed back with water bottles and paper cups. the building -- school -- schools for the water in the building to check for lead. >> reporter: officials are not sure how these -- how long these faucets will be out. until the water is deemed 100 percent safe to drink students will use water stations and water bottles. the district began the testing for lead in the water back in

constructed before 2002 are on the list of those being analyzed. they are testing the main areas were students will be exposed to water the most, water fountains, sinks in the restrooms, kitchens and the nurses office. testing is being done as a precautionary measure. there is no federal law that requires schools to test for lead however they often do test the schools -- opted to test the school after the flint michigan water crisis one year ago. one those come back they will notify the public of those results. it is schools that test positive, the parents will be contacted and the water will be off. coming up: stories continue to make headlines. how routine traffic stop helped ohio state troopers get hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of drugs, heroine, off the street.

for 3 men who spent more than 2 decades in prison for a murder they did not commit. tensions remain high in milwaukee after another involved -- officer involved shooting. why the family of the victim has called for peace in milwaukee.

ohio state troopers discovered drugs hidden in a secret department during a

interstate 80. troopers pulled the driver over. he was driving an suv. they pulled him over for following too close to the car in front. after searching the vehicle they found 6 pounds of heroin. it was hidden in a secret compartment in the vehicle's dashboard. 2 men in that suv, both from chicago, were arrested and charged with possession and trafficking of heroin. they spent 20 years in prison for a murder they did not commit. th dismissed. there conventions -- convictions were also satisfied . the 3 were convicted for 1995 murder. in april they were released from prison after the judge found evidence of misconduct by prosecutors. at that time a new trial was ordered. in the courtroom today prosecutors dropped the charges 21 years after the conviction.

it was a week of height -- weekend of hypertension and confrontation in milwaukee . demonstrators took to the street for a 2nd straight night . they protested a case where a police killed an armed man. many milwaukee resident say the protesters were just hurting the community. in this scene, the family of the man who was killed was calling for peace. we have the latest on that situation in milwaukee. >> [ video playback ] >> reporter: mayhem in milwaukee with tension between police and protesters boiling

an allegedly armed black man during a traffic stop. >> [ audio playback ] >> reporter: and chaos protesters destroyed this patrol car and burning businesses. at least one teenager was lost to the hospital in an armored vehicle. it all started saturday afternoon after the the 23-year-old suspect seen in this facebook picture and now identified as smith was shot and killed by an officer who to -- the suspect was armed according to authority. the officer ordered him to drop his weapon but when he did not comply there was the confrontation. the confrontation was sought -- seen on the body camera video. >> i know what i saw. what he made was a credible decision. >> reporter: smith's family

destroying the neighborhood. as for the video from the officer's body camera, officials hope to release that as soon as possible. the officer involved, in the meantime, we are told was not injured and is right now on administrative duty. elsewhere in the news: damage, devastation and heartache on the western part of this country. a raging wildfire has destroyed a historic town. thousands of evacuate here the fire is about 90 miles north of san francisco. this is the aftermath of that raging fire. the community is called lower lakes california. cars and homes were charred. in many instances they are unrecognizable. thousands of records and -- residents in the area are without power. additional law enforcement officers have been brought into the area. >> emotions are still incredibly raw from the valley

around downtown, 480 we do have that rain shot in and around south brooklyn. we also see the right lane in cleveland -- 490 and 77 ask usually. for the most part -- excuse me . for the most part we expect weather to cooperate if you are planning on venturing out without finding big rain totals. we are waiting our a warm front. to the north it is been lighter into the sou in into the overnight hours . we will see the slow move closer and closer. with that path comes heavier rain. right now it is making its way through indiana and illinois keeping though stronger showers and heavier rain totals back to the west. north and west is the backs -- best shot to see lower rain totals for this event. our prediction is it will stay just
