nice green grass, get outside and enjoy it. make sure though you are staying hydrated throughout your afternoon. good morning greater cleveland, 73 degrees. upper 60s and lower 70s for stark and summit county. so we're off to definitely a warm start. all right dew points, you're going to have that ac cranking for most of the day right now we're seeing that oppressive air, upper 60s across the ar cleveland, 67. 66 for canton and akron. so we're looking at that to reach the lower 70s mark. 5 live radars not picking up moisture but i want to show you exact timing when we'll track in the raindrops. by 3:00 it will be in and out, not going to spoil your day so looking forward to more sunshine than ever. we're learning new details about a woman killed by a stranger after a crash. it happened at richmond and

newschannel 5's derekwaller is learning more about the victim. >> shocking. >> reporter: barbara's neighbor, 53-year-old deborah pearl of twinsburg shot and killed saturday morning following this traffic accident. police said they took the shooter into custody but he hasn't been identified. they said he ran a red light and flipped his car, hers was out and fired. >> i'm shocked. we heard it as a distraught piece of news. to boot here it is, one of the nice men who said hello to me is a -- first meeting of a neighbor in a new area and it's his own wife. too shocking to be -- almost real. >> accident at the corner, man walking around with an ak-47 shooting all over the place. >> reporter: that is the terrifying scene witnesses saw before 7:30. >> are you there?

walking back and forth pacing. >> reporter: that 911 caller told police the man eventually put down the weapon and he was at the scene long enough for police to quickly catch up with him. meanwhile, pearl worked at a local harley-davidson dealership and it was a passion for motorcycles and cars that we're told she and her husband shared. >> happy man, for the rest of his life will be distraught. >> solon police not publicly identifying the man until charges are filed tomorrow. we'll continue to follow this story, download our newsnet5 app for the latest judgments. a jackson township man accused of gunning down his ex and her new boyfriend has died. the stark county coroner says 29-year-old shane varner died saturday morning at the hospital. massillon police say he shot and killed tara clawsman and michael lovette as the couple

officers tracked varner down. he was taken to the hospital after trying to commit suicide. several states are scrambling to deal with heroin overdose outbreaks. there have been spikes in several areas including ohio. a overdose antidote is narcan. some people are calling this treatment an enabler. they say addicts don't take the consequences seriously because of a safety net. some saved by narcan and those working to help addicts disagree. >> does it enable someone? yes, to live another day, to hopefully get into recovery and live a happy productive life. >> members of a southern ohio heroin task force say the problem isn't narcan, it's what happens after. first responders have few options, either take the person to jail or let them go. they argue state law needs to be changed so they can bring

now. good morning mentor, 69 degrees. inland locations already akron and canton, warm air is tracking in here. 74 right now. we're looking at highs today back in the upper 80s, lower 90s. there is the calm winds so another beach day if you want to be by the pool. make sure you're tracking it in, bringing it back inside around the 2:00 to 3:00 hour as we track just a few storms. look at that, 88 for greater cleveland but if you sweltering heat, 92 and hot. this sounds like a movie plot. children living in a sewer system but utility workers in washington state say that really may be happening there. the workers were shocked by what they found underneath this 80-pound manhole cover. 14 feet below the street was a makeshift bed, clothes, toys and food. nearby they spotted two young boys, look to be about 12 or 13

them about the dangers of methane gas, vermin and limited air. >> no one should be down there without protective equipment on. >> neighbors say they've seen the kids running back and forth in the area and have noticed the manhole covers slightly ajar for months. workers returned to the site recently but say the food and toys are cleaned out and there's no sign of the boys. a couple stranded boaters are very lucky to be alive this morning. the pair were tryi to another when they got off track and ended up stranded on a deserted island. wednesday a ship noticed flashing lights from the island and notified the u.s. coast guard in gwam. days later a navy aircraft spotted the s.o.s. that the boaters spelled on the beach. they were rescued friday about a week after they originally went missing.

two nuns killed in their

today. their bodies discovered thursday after they didn't show up to work at a health clinic. officials say rodney earl sanders confessed but gave no reason for the crime. they were known for kindness, patience and dedication. >> it's hard to imagine that one who served the poor, untiringly, day and night, that her life would be taken violent way. >> the county where they worked is one of the poorest in the country. right now the search continues in new orleans after a small plane crashed into a lake. officials say a woman was rescued by boaters but two men are still missing. it went down near an airport. police are using divers in an effort to find the men and the wreckage. the woman was rushed to a hospital. condition unknown. we'll keep following this story. those fighting against

bathroom bill are celebrating a major victory. a federal judge is ruling that two students and employee at the university of north carolina must be allowed to use restrooms matching their gender identity. the law titled hb2 keeps transgender people from using bathrooms that don't match the gender on their birth certificate. they hope it's a sign of things to come as the larger case against the law heads to trial in november. >> it shows that hb2 is is a big thing so i think that is going to set a precedent for once it actually goes to court. >> the ruling will have little effect at unc as the university already refused to enforce hb2. elsewhere the state of north carolina is already seeing fallout from the law. the nba recently announced the all-star game is moving from charlotte to new orleans. a report shows mostly

have been shot by chicago police. the data from 2010 to 2015. a newspaper found four of five people shot by officers were black. and half the officers involved were african-american or hispanic. most had years of experience on the force. the police unit says it's not about ethnicity, it's about criminal involvement. pro basketball car dwyane wade's cousin is one of the latest victims of gun violence in chicag killed while pushing a stroller. police say she was caught in the crossfire. donald trump tweeting her death is an example of what he's been saying proclaiming african- americans will vote trump. an hour later he expressed condoleiences to the family. wade also reacted with a hashtag enoughisenough. the clinton campaign -- tim kaine says the only appropriate reaction is

cranking all day. make sure you're staying hydrated, as they reach that 70- degree mark. 5 live radars not picking up any moisture, just a little ground clutter. any moisture we're seeing is now crossing over to erie, pennsylvania so we are off to a dry and mild start. right now we're tracking in a very weak front here. it is producing some rainy activity from champaign to fort wayne. and we're going to track that providing us with just a few raindrops this afternoon. so hour by hour, what do you have planned? if you're going to be outside, sunscreen, water definitely handy. by the 2:00 hour we're already upper 80s, near 90s for most spots. that is when we see the heat of the day and so that moisture is going to track in here providing us with just a few quick raindrops. let's break it down even more, hour by hour, you're seeing

we have several developing stories including a local fire department shutting down. we're looking into what will happen to all the firefighters but first a check on the weather with "power of 5" meteorologist janessa webb. good morning. >> good morning. get out and about this afternoon but make sure you're staying hydrated. as we're talking about upper 80s, lower 90s again for greater cleveland. kind of haze in the sky now. as our dew points, they are already up lower 70s. so that muggy meter on top notch this afternoon. right now good morning elyria at 68 degrees. upper 60s for wayne county. hopkins currently 73. waking up this morning, lake, also geauga county already at that 70-degree mark. 5 live radars not picking up moisture. probably noticing the high clouds but we're nice and dry for the start of your sunday. we are tracking a very weak

north here. you can see a few spotty showers from fort wayne to champaign. this will be some isolated activity as we step into about the 2:00 hour so definitely a pool day if you just want to be outside but you're going to notice the clouds, they start to really thicken up, by the 2:00 hour. if you hear rumbles of thunder or tracking the clouds we need to you bring it inside. this will be in and out fairly quickly here. you can see by 5:00 sitting under mostly cloudy for the evening hours. so looking at a nice hot steamy day, summer just continues to go strong here. we're talking about 90s just for you. >> i like it. newschannel 5 confirmed a woman was pulled from the water in the flats. it happened last night outside shooters. the coast guard says she was drinking at the bar before falling into the river. a good samaritan jumped in

on scene. the woman's condition is unknown at this time. we'll keep you updated. a 29-year-old north ridgeville man is in police custody this morning accused of shooting and killing 53-year- old deborah pearl after a crash. police don't think they knew each other and are investigating this as a possible case of road rage. they say the suspect ran a red light flipping his car and that is when he got out and started shooting. a neighbor saw the whole thing happen. shooting inside the car. then i heard her scream. at that moment when i looked back out real quick because i'm like, ok, i'm getting away from the window in case and i heard her scream and she was on the ground and he was standing over her shooting her some more. >> the suspect in this case is not being identified until he's charged tomorrow. for now he's in the solon jail. we're learning an arrest has been made in connection with a series of bb gun

police there are not releasing the suspect's name but plan to file charges tomorrow. we told you earlier this week about a number of car windows being shot out along noble road and police say some drivers reported their windows being smashed. while they were stopped at red lights. the entire fire department in summit county is closing for good. firefighters covering northfield and sagamore hills will lose their job next month. after sagamore hills decided to terminate an agreement with nortie new contract with macedonia. northfield center trustees followed suit after voters rejected issue 3 that would have continued to fund the department. the 28 staffers were given opportunities to apply for positions with macedonia. >> not easy for us because we worked so hard at giving service to our residents and we know that macedonia did the same. it's just that it's happening to us right now at this time. >> the chief says this really

ohio governor john kasich has been on the record advocating for small cities and towns to share services and save money. looking ahead -- tomorrow the teachers union and cleveland metropolitan school district will meet. their goal is to avoided a strike. the district ceo says he's confident tomorrow's meeting with the mediator will work out. he says there's too much at stake for schools, teachers, families and students. the teachers union issued a strike notice. if in contact is reached the strike will begin september 1st. >> this afternoon you may want to bring some ear plugs. thousands of motorcycles will be starting all at once. they are trying to beat a guinness world record. tickets $25 per motorcycle. walk-ins welcome as are nonriders. proceeds go to north coast community homes, they will attempt to beat the record 3:00 this afternoon. big unveiling in summit county today. akron public schools firestone litchfield community learning center officially opens. the public can walk around from 1:00 to 4:00.

summer holding on strong. another day of temperatures in the 90s. that is come bike with our -- combining with dew points in the lower 70s. when the two grab forces together we're looking heat index of 95 degrees. so definitely a beach or pool day but we're tracking in a few raindrops around the 2:00 hour. so when you start to see the dark clouds i want to you bring it inside. most of the day will sit under that hot sticky air with partly sunny skies. let's break it for hour by hour -- i think the brunt of the moisture moves in around 2:00 but you can just see summer just doesn't want to fade away.

it's celebrating the transformation of cleveland and the water surrounding it. it was 1969 when the river caught fire. that was then and this is now. >> cleveland has come a long way from where the flats were, i remember from the 1990s so when they ever shut down. to popular restaurants and breweries. the convention brought national attention to the city. >> reporter: for those invested in a clean waterfront say there's still more work to do. >> it used to be a period of time where everyone said you have to choose between the environmental protection or economic prosperity which we've always said is a false choice because every sim time you have environmental prosperity you get economic development. nothing is more manifesting that concept than the banks of cuyahoga river.

to summit county this week. that is where our john kosich talked with him. john has that and more in this morning's "democracy 2016". >> reporter: good sunday morning northeast ohio. as you wrap up august this week the race for the white house is in full swing. it started with donald trump in akron. ended with a discussion on race and the words were strong. >> donald trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. he is mainstream. and helping a radical fringe take over the republican party. >> when democratic policies fail they are left with only this one tired argument -- you're racist, you're racist, you're racist. they keep saying it. uris racist. it's a tired, disgusting argument. >> one of donald trump's strongest arguments in the

stance on immigration, in support of the idea of deporting 11 million people in the u.s. illegally. this week market what might be a pivot for trump or maybe not. to win the election he needs more than 60 million votes. the primary he won 14 million. on monday i asked him at what point do you stop playing to the 14 million and start going after the 60 plus million you need in november? >> i don't want to just cater to anybody. i just want to do what is right. >> reporter: wednesday night though if he >> do we tell these people to get out number one or -- can we work with them and let them stay? >> reporter: trump backing off the plan to automatically deport 11 million undocumented immigrants. >> you're going to have a deportation, of course, we're rounding them up in a very humane way. >> in favor of -- >> they have to pay taxes. there's no amnesty as such. there's no amnesty. >> reporter: if it sounds

coming. >> it's hard to merge with him. >> reporter: have you reached to kasich or will you to resolve whatever differences you have? >> no, i have not. >> reporter: as for the absence of rob portman locked in his own re-election race with former governor ted strickland. have you asked him? >> no, i have a good relationship with him though. >> reporter: what impact do you have you'll have on the race? >> well, we're doing well in ohio and florida and we're doing very well in a co i have to focus on my race and i want to do well and i think it's going to be helping rob. rob has been very nice. >> reporter: rob portman shows to be outpolling donald trump while donald trump trails hillary clinton by 4 points in his. but here's where donald trump could help rob portman. check out the cnn map. the results of the march presidential primary.

a large part of this was ted strickland's old congressional district. these are the voters with whom donald trump's message is resonating with. and the ones he's saying to follow me. >> i think one of the very bad things, the miners will be out of business. the steel workers will be out of business. our manufacturing is going to continue to leave. i'm going to bring it all back. >> reporter: if you have a sense this campaign is a -- has a fall feel and we're already at the end of august you conventions were early this year. this may be technically the longest general election period in 56 years but not really. since early voting will be underway in five states by the end of september. so while campaigns in the past waited until after labor day to get started they are doing what they couldn't do four years ago

when campaigns look to reach you. hillary clinton looked to pull the ads off the air. in two states where she's leading but also two states that essentially don't have early voting. ohio's early voting starts october 12th if you're registered, don't worry, it's a day you don't need to remember. >> i'll send every single voter in this state an absentee ballot request, if they fill it out and turn it in they have a month to vote leaving home. >> it reduces chances of election day lines and impact of problems at the polls. something different this year? >> if you vote absentee by mail you can track your ballot on line through myohiovote.com or your local board of elections to make sure it was received and counted. >> reporter: roughly 3/4 of all states offer some form of early voting. with democracy 2016, i'm john kosich. it's a beautiful day outside.

point, port clinton, lower 70s now but we're looking upper 80s for daytime highs. madison, ashtabula, 71. so warm air definitely tracking in. earlier this morning, waking up to a slightly cooler conditions for richland to wayne county. lower 60s but definitely warming up here fairly quickly. talk about dew points, it's the moisture in the air, already at an oppressive state when we by the noon hour most spots going to be in the lower 70s. so big hair today. going to need to stay hydrated as the heat definitely attracts in a southerly flow. 5 live radars, not picking up moisture, just high cirrhus clouds you can see from stark to summit county, a little high pressure here trying to build in. allowing for the sunshine. it does retreat just a tad bit

and lift to the north. that is we're seeing the spotty showers from chicago to champaign now. this will move in from west-to- east, providing us with just a few raindrops and yesterday afternoon we had those gully washers, severe thunderstorm warnings for two of our counties. today it's going to be on the lighter side but you're going to notice the cloud coverage starts to thicken here by the 2:00 hour. it should be in and out quickly. if you have evening plans tonight by the 7:00 hour we should be on the dry side, temperatures still in the 80s. there's that front. it will continue to track to the north. let's show you exact timing. if you have outdoor plans or just headed to the pool this afternoon. i want to you bring it inside when you start to the clouds thickening up. this is noon, most spots 80s nearing 90s tore summit county.
