it's the 15th anniversary of september 11th and all eyes on new york this morning. we will take you live to the memorial sites you're seeing live images now to see how the city is remembering all the lives lost on the day that forever lives. >> this year's anniversary falling on a sunday. the official start of the pro football season, some tributes you'll likely see at today's games. >> speaking of football, we're looking live outside at firstenergy stadium. the browns may be away from home today but we have got a preview of their season opener in philadelphia straight ahead. welcome to this weekend edition of "good morning cleveland," i'm nick foley. >> i'm sarah phinney. strong storms rolled through our area last night so let's

with "power of 5" meteorologist somara theodore. >> good morning. good news is we're not contenting with storms today. current temperatures now 67 degrees, time 10:00 a.m. you can see dew points pretty far off in the 50s so no worries about humidity. in fact today's going to feel a lot more like fall than summer. here's the satellite and radar. one thing to notice is no green on the screen. rain not in the near future. along the lakeshore outlined in purple are the areas that are under also has the national weather service issued a beach hazard, because winds are really picking up along the lakeshore. taking it hour by hour -- the highs today are going to climb, wouldn't even call it climb, maybe skip from the 60s into the low 70s. it's going to be a noticeably cooler day on tap. tons of sunshine though. we're following breaking news, another violent night in cleveland, six people shot, three dead.

night, an 18-year-old man killed while sitting in a car at east 116th and putnam. a man and woman in their 20s later shot 2:00 a.m. at east 86th and beckham, found in the street, both later died at university hospital. there are no suspects yet. across the country this morning americans are waking up remembering exactly where they were 15 years ago today. visions of horrific images from new york to the our heads. in the decade and-a-half since that day 9/11 has come to represent a lot of emotions for us. sadness, anger, perhaps loss of innocence as well. >> also a day that brings us together and serves as a reminder of what it truly means to be american. the nation persevered since the day nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. there are new moments and celebrating new life. most importantly the nation

elapsed since 9/11. this is hard to believe but it has. >> each 9/11 of each year we look back and reflect. >> two moments of silence already opened at the 9/11 memorial in new york city marking the exact time each plane hit the twin towers. in washington president obama just addressed the families and friends of the pentagon attack. back at home -- in northeast ohio, a short ceremony held a short >> tsa, and others came together to remember the fallen. a moment of silence at checkpoint b followed by the national anthem and "amazing grace." you can see a part of our nation's history at the shops at parma beginning today as well one of the beams left standing from the attack at the world trade center will be unveiled this afternoon as part of a special memorial service. the design of the permanent display was made to represent the trade center as it was

blood drive also scheduled from 11:00 to 3:00. in painesville the 9/11 never forget project placing one flag for every person killed in the attacks. the memorial began earlier with honor guard, 21-gun salute and tribute from the mentor high school choir. also included a 5k, proceeds to an organization that helps kids interested in becoming police officers or firefighters. 9/11 tributes continued in medina steven siller tunnel to towers 5k run. these are pictures from the event this morning. the tunnel-to-towers foundation started by the family of new york city firefighter steven siller who on september 11th ran through the battery tunnel from brooklyn to the world trade center where he lost his life. the run and walk in medina started 8:00 this morning. as you can see some of the firefighters and police officers actually ran in their turnout response gear as a sign of respect.

gathering at the ohio veterans memorial. after a short flag ceremony they will ride to avon. this year's ride especially focuses on the 40 people killed on flight 93. the weather we've had recently, yesterday's storms put a damper on several sporting events. >> the ohio state/tulsa game was delayed because of a thunderstorm and in kent the season home opener also had to be derailed because of lightning. fans ran for cheerleaders with ponchos. after a two and-a-half hour delay that game finally got underway. >> we watched it all week. we knew it was going to rain. we were hoping for the best. we thought it was going to hold out but it didn't. >> unlike those fans a lot of people left during the long delay but despite the empty seats there was no shortage of school spirit. kent fell a bit short in the

that is the other bigger to today. game day after a rough preseason run. the browns get a clean slate. >> they kick off against the eagles in philly this afternoon. meg shaw live at firstenergy with a preview. good morning, meg. >> reporter: good morning. fans, this is the day you've been waiting for, nfl sunday is back. as you mentioned the browns are in philly for their season opener. but this may not be the year for the browns because in recent weeks the browns head coach hue jackson has continued to clean house trading justin dwibt and barkevius mingo. 17 rookies on the active 53-man roster. that is more than 30% of the team. unheard of in the league basically. without rookies there are bound to be mistakes, but i think

good morning. i'm "power of 5" meteorologist somara theodore. filling in for janessa webb. we have some good news. temperatures today are going to be on the cooler side. to people, like our producer, she says it's refreshing. so it will be a nice refreshing day ahead. a great deal of sunshine comes out after the clouds leave. here's a look at the temperature trend for the next few days. even though we're faring on the cooler side for sunday, by tuesday we rebound into the 80s. here's more good news -- our northeast ohio champion is still on top of the mountain.

10:15. sunday morning. we have a first look at the mug shots of the couple police found passed out in a car after overdosing on heroin with a 4- year-old in the back seat. james mccord was sent to a year in jail. and rhonda pacic, the mother, pled not guilty, will be in courag police say the couple passed out in the traffic stop. with the boy in the back seat. it's caught the attention of people across the country which is exactly what police wanted to happen. they say the photo shows how heroin affects users and of course the innocent children there. at least 45 people have been killed in syria hours after a new u.s./russian agreement tries to end the violence. the deal establishes a ceasefire but it doesn't start until monday.

partnership targeting the islamic state and al-qaeda. previous ceasefires like this caused spikes in violence, says the government and rebel forces make final pushes to gain territory. the conflict in syria is now in its sixth year. at least 500,000 people have been killed. a deck collapse in connecticut happened saturday night in an off-campus house near trinity college. according to and then that fell on the first. each level was crowded with partiers. most of the injured were students but no one was killed. police say the third floor deck was rotted, not structurally sound, the house is owned but not managed by the college. in boston a bad crash put a stop to a weekend of speed boat races. emergency responders had to rush in to help three drivers after their boats collided and one of the drivers eventually died. the three were all driving

per hour causing a pile-up. as we said one driver did die, another taken to the hospital in critical condition. the other just had minor injuries. >> we had been in a few accidents, over my 23 years. i knew it didn't look good. the last thing we expect is an accident. we're here to have fun and enjoy the sport and just don't like to see this happen. >> the district attorney's office says foul play is is ongoing. all the races set for today have been cancelled. moving to our nation's capital -- where six flags america is reopening this morning after a threat closed it saturday. the park was cleared out of an abundance of caution. a private event was going on at the time. police say nothing suspicious was found in the sweep. a man who tried to assassinate president ronald reagan has been released from a psychiatric hospital.

president reagan he left -- shot president reagan he left st. elizabeth's in hospital. doctors now say he has recovered from his mental illness, a judge decided in july to allow hinckley to live full time with his mother in williamsburg, virginia. who can forget this photo? a sailor planting a kiss on a woman in times square celebrating the end of world passed away at a virginia hospital. the picture became one of the most iconic of the 20th century. friedman was not identified as the nurse until nearly 40 years after it was taken and get this, she and the sailor had never met before he spun her around and kissed her. she was 92. moving to an update on the road to recovery -- it's been a month since the devastating flooding in louisiana but yet nearly 1,000 people are still

having trouble finding a place to stay and way to get home after floodwaters forced them out. that number is still a fraction though of the 11,000 in shelters at the height of the flooding. people are leaving shelters daily. fema teams are at each shelter trying to help people get available help. that road to recovery is still lengthy for so many folks down there. we've had flooding in our part before but never anything like this. >> no, in fact much of the summer. we're now transitioning, really into fall. let's look now at the forecast. rain not in ours but here's a look outside, beautiful shot of downtown. you are going to notice we have a lot of clouds, low clouds overhead but are not going to be precipitating any time soon as we're expecting sunny conditions come here this afternoon. no green on the screen.

advisory along the lakeshore extending from lorain county out towards ashtabula and pennsylvania. so be careful out there. winds really picking up, beach hazards as well. it's pretty cool to be down there anyway. 69 in mentor, 67 in chagrin falls. peninsula 66. we head to the west and we see the temperatures in the 60s. they are climbing. it was a lot cooler this morning in ashland, down to 56 degrees. not long ago. if you're wondering why, well, it's because we have high pressure dominating today. high pressure is our friend. this is how i often explain it. a lot of people say what is the l? low pressure. we have a lot of the air moving around, things get active and we start to see thunderstorms. with high pressure, there's a lot of pressure on the air, it's compact, not mewing steady. so nothing but sunshine. a cold front pushed through so we had the showers and

not only are we green-free but also seeing the white clouds continue to push out so we'll be left with lots of sunshine into the sunday evening. these temperatures in the morning, you saw numbers dropping into the 40s. it's going to be a cool morning tomorrow, as the kids get on the bus. make sure they have the sweater or light coat handy because it will be pretty chilly. by the afternoon, recess, they should be fine, temperatures climbing into the 70s. you can see for monday though we are faring on here's the "power of 5" 7-day forecast forecast. i go with rain chances in the middle of the week. even though it is feeling like fall today we have the 80s rebounding by tuesday. indians on the wrong end of a walkoff in minnesota but the loss does come with a silver lining. after a sluggish start the buckeyes hit their stride despite some rainy conditions in columbus. andy baskin with that and more

good morning, cleared anchor jackie fernandez joined thousands of others at progressive field saturday morning but not to watch baseball. she hosted the opening ceremonies of the walk to end lupus now, the biggest event of the year for the greater ohio chapter of the lupus foundation of america. lupus affects over one million americans and 60,000 are right here in the buckeye state. >> there's no cure. we have ineffective medications, poor treatment with them and lupus is a cruel mystery. we need to help our lupus patients. >> organizers hope to raise $100,000 at the walk. >> they got out before the rain came yesterday as well. coming up -- several ohio football games hit with threats of violence. what officials are doing to keep kids safe. >> on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 tributes are planned all across the world. we go live to new york where the largest is happening

bit. welcome back to this weekend edition of "good morning cleveland." i'm nick foley. >> i'm sarah phinney. today's the 15th anniversary of the worst terror attack in america's history. it changed our country and the world forever. >> thousands are expected to gather at the site where the twin towers once stood. to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed 15 years ago. >> abc's marci gonzalez from with more on how the nation is remembering and healing. good from the moment of silence to the reading of the names it's now become an annual tradition, so many families gathered here, say it's not gotten easier. today from the raw emotional images seared into the collective memory. to the faces and stories of the 2,996 lives lost. this morning a somber

heartbreak and horror 15 years ago today. the impact of the september 11th terror attacks still piercing through the haunting recollections. >> as we crawled in deeper squeezing through tiny openings and into a smoke-filled environment we came to the understanding that we are going to die in that pile. >> and lingering effects. 127 new york city firefighters who stayed at ground zero in the days and weeks followed the attacks searching heroically through the toxic debris have since died of respiratory and other ailments. >> nagging problems, worsened became acute. the number of those lost to the terrorist attack of september 11th began to grow. >> reporter: 17 new names added to the fdny's memorial wall this year while again the other names etched into history are read allowed.

reflection of the new 1 world trade center to the pentagon and the field in shanksville, pennsylvania. mourning families and our country honoring that vow made 15 years ago to never forget. as families gather here to pay tribute the nypd says its officers are on highway alert though there are no -- high alert though there are no specific >> 15 years have passed and some of the victims still have not been identified. what is being done to change that? >> reporter: about 40% of the people who died in the world trade center on 9/11 still haven't been identified. more than 1100 people. so the medical examiner's office here employs 10 full time scientists who are working

very difficult for the families i'm sure. let's send it to somara theodore for a look at the forecast. it's certainly the better of the two days in the weekend for sure. >> yes. most definitely. yesterday we were awakened to showers and storms in the afternoon. here's a look at the current temperature. 67 degrees, notice we've got some cumulus there, low clouds, a great day to get out and the clouds are actually going to leave us, and in place we're going to see nothing but sunshine. on the day planner you can check it out. 11:00 a.m. you see the clouds, we're also pretty breezy, winds out of the north northwest at 9 miles per hour picking up a bit so there's a small craft advisory issued along the lakeshore from lorain through ashtabula county. as far as the afternoon temperatures go we're looking at 70 to 73 degrees at the most. we're faring on the cooler side of things. we expect to see these temperatures stick around.

brief reprieve. if you're missing the heat it will return in the form of 80- degree temperatures. then we're back to the 70s after that. we'll talk more about it later. some people are waking up this morning without power. at one point yesterday's storms put 7,000 customers in the dark. we are checking firstenergy's outage map. right now 500 are still affected. we'll keep you updated. akron fire working to find out what caused this second alarm fire picture a few hours ago of multiple trucks at ellet high school. investigators say when crews responded 11:00 last night to go room-to-room to find the blaze. a ventilation truck was called in to help clear the smoke. we're working to find out more information about that damage. two ohio football teams are scheduled to face off this afternoon after a serious threat cancelled the game friday night. just an hour before kickoff.

tailgate areas and responding officers would be shot. the stadium was quickly evacuated and bomb squad called in. >> nothing humorous about this. nothing funny. this shut down a very large scale event. there is potential for injury. at this point we don't even know that it's not real. >> mason will play moeller 2:30 this afternoon. both those schools are cincinnati area. a similar bomb threat was made during another high school football game nearby friday night but that game continued. it's not yet clear if the threats are connected. speaking of football, it's finally here. today's like christmas for football fans. this is the first sunday of the regular season of the nfl. >> christmas indeed. the browns have won just one season opener since 1999 but fans are hoping that turns

from firstenergy stadium. good morning, meg. >> reporter: good morning. you described it well, christmas for football fans because nfl sunday is back and the browns are opening their season in philadelphia against the eagles. some say this is the team's best chance at winning a game. this entire season. going up against rookie quarterback carston wentz but some others disagree with the statement. former baltimore ravens head coach brian billick this week that the browns wouldn't win a game all season. and today's a winnable game but not a confident pick. analytics are not on our side. according to espn the browns offense is projected to be last in the league with our defense somehow ranked 26th. if the browns don't win a game all season they will be the only -- the second team in the league to go winless since the

ohio will remain in the political spotlight as vice presidential candidate tim kaine returns to the state tomorrow. this to follow a week that included multiple visits from donald trump and political traffic jam at cleveland hopkins. >> newschannel 5's john kosich has that and more in our democracy 2016. >> reporter: a very good morning northeast ohio as we share in the common joy that is the first sunday of the nfl season, while pausing to reflect on events of 15 years ago this morning. 58 days to election day. 31 days to early voting starting in ohio. don't be surprised if you see more scenes like this. earlier this week, when both complain planes were on the tarmac at cleveland hopkins as both nominees arrived to campaign for labor day votes. donald trump ended the week at a charter school on the cleveland's east side starting on the west side with mike pence talking to union leaders

meanwhile took their campaign to a mile from where trump was thursday. when given the opportunity as part of our democracy 2016 coverage we'll bring conversations with the candidates and running mates and this morning i talked to democratic vice presidential candidate tim kaine. as former dn chair you're well aware of what is going >> ohio is always at the top in terms of must wins and where both sides always feel like they can win. no republican has ever been president without ohio. so republicans feel like this is our territory and democrats, we've shown a good ability to win races with ohio especially in 2008 and 2012. this race is as fully joined in ohio as in any other state. second time i've been here. i'm going to be back a lot. >> reporter: donald trump

ohio nationally. why do you think that is? >> i thought this would be close. in april of 2014 i encouragedded hillary clinton to run. i encouraged her to run and said i don't care what the pulse says you're the underdog or winner. just because of the series of dynamics including you're trying to two something that has never been done before. we are a millally divided -- politically divided nation, no state shows that more than ohio in a lot of ways. we always assumed it would be close and we have to make our case everyday. we're not going to stop election. we're going to make it right up to election day that hillary's proposal, building an economy that works for all, having strong military and alliances and having a community of respect and inclusion rather than division, these are the pillars of a campaign, we're stronger together and it's the case we have to make. >> reporter: trump's message has resonated with blue collar workers, especially with nafta.

>> first -- real quick i supported fast track authority, tpa to let the president negotiate the best deal but once you do i said i will look at the deal and decide who meets my standard. hillary and i are ok with trade deals if they meet the standards of increased jobs and wages and national security. tpd doesn't, that's why we're not supporting it. donald trump has gotten traction, sure but if american workers say how is deporting 16 us? that's his plan, build a walt, tax cuts to the rich -- we want a fair tax code that doesn't reward companies that ship jobs overseas. i think when people compare they will realize that deportation nation is no path to success but making investments in our people is path to success. >> reporter: i notice clinton

donations, she won't accept them - >> foreign donations as of now, as of president, president clinton will step aside from the connection with the foundation. she's taking a step forward now, the foundation is but saying there's no corporations, no foreign connected countries that is not taking them now. elected president clinton will sever the tie with the foundation he created. >> reporter: there was national news, the clinton foundation hasn't stopped accepting foreign and corporate donations and will only do so if clinton is elected president. you heard tim kaine mentioned he'll be back in northeast ohio. a man of his word, in southeast ohio tomorrow. northeast ohio tuesday and on the trip will be former governor ted strickland

portman leads in the race and strickland is losing some financial backing. in 2016 ohio democrats looking to win back the u.s. senate saw opportunity and n a matchup between incumbent republican rob portman and democratic challenger strickland. >> you have a former governor and congressman running against an incumbent. >> reporter: strickland's name recognition came with the record of being governor the economic downturn which portman has used against strickland. >> i had more money spent against me in attack ads than hillary clinton had against her in all the states she was running in. >> reporter: super pacs fire back. one announced this week they were pulling $3 million in ohio and -- >> this essentially says that the democrats have given up on the seat and redirecting resources to other seats. >> strickland takes issue with

ads. >> those decisions are made in washington. and i'm here in ohio. and i think a lot of times people in washington live in a bubble. they have no idea what is really going on in the ground, on the ground. >> reporter: on the ground being the operative words. >> hillary clinton's campaign and my campaign, we have over 400 paid organizers throughout ohio and right now they are out there working everyday going door-to-door talking to people registered. >> reporter: portman also with a strong ground game while the gop may be working issues with donald trump they remain committed including governor kasich to see portman re- elected. i'm john kosich, enjoy your sunday. i don't want to do it but it may be time to break out the

first i'll show you why we're seeing what we are seeing. a cold front pushed through, brought us storms yesterday evening. high pressure dominates now and that will allow us to see a lot of sunshine for your sunday. that's what we're in for. as for the next couple of hours we stay dry but see the temperatures not really going much of anywhere, 8:00 p.m. already on the decline back to the cooler numbers. 60s. notice quickly, see how we go through the 40s, 6:45 a.m. tomorrow morning. then we start to rise into tomorrow morning. and then the upper 70s by tomorrow afternoon. it's not going to be forever that we're going to be in the cool temperatures. in fact here's a look at the next few days. i want to show you something -- notice the temperature trend overall today. looking at the low to mid-70s -- that should be 72, not 78. 79 on monday. we do rebound getting a little bit of heat on tuesday to the low to mid-80s so. that will be comfortable. wednesday we do have that threat for showers and storms
