good afternoon, everybody. this is leon beb. beginning the broadcast on a very busy news day. much to detail today. the starting point is a heartbreaking local story of a toddler falling to his death from an 11-story apartment building in willoughby hills. newschannel 5s sarah phinney is following the story all morning long and has the latest for us now. >> reporter: police in willoughby hills said two men smoking spotted the boy. they then found an on-site security guard who dialed 911. this happening after mid-night

of chardon road. the toddler fell out of an 11th- story bedroom window. the parents and another young child were home at the time. police say it's unclear who exactly opened the window. the boy was rushed to richmond heights university hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. right now, police say that no one witnessed the fall. police say this appears to be a tragic accident. in willoughby hills, sarah phinney, newschannel 5. and today, flags around ohio will fly tribute to the memory of ohio highway patrol officer kenneth vellez, who was hit and killed by a vehicle last week. he was doing his duty on i-90 in lakewood. calling hours are at 3 at the ewing center field house at lorain county community college. the funeral for the trooper vellez is for tomorrow morning. police officers from around the country are expected to attend. and also today, donald trump is back in cleveland,

an invitation-only event at a cleveland heights church. john kosech was there this morning where african-american concerns were the main topic of discussion. he's john. >> reporter: leon, an unusual setting for sure here for not only donald trump but any presidential candidate speaking to a group of african-american ministers. trump, of course, enjoying the vocal support of the host here at new spirit revival. the longtime supporter reverend darrell scott. before the leadership conference, trump and his running mate people, appealing to african- americans, hispanics and other traditional democratic voters for their support and summing it up in six words. >> what do you have to lose? i mean what do you have to lose? i'm going to fix it. what do you have to lose? and somehow thatsoppated. some -- that reson sited. some people didn't like it. i said what difference does it make? it's true. what do you have to lose?

north carolina. overnight, the rage by protestors intensified after police shot a man. a gun was recovered from the scene and many police officers have been injured. now, the family of the man killed is speaking out. abcs ray reymundi gives us the latest news from charlotte, north carolina. >> reporter: tensions boiling over through the night on the streets of charlotte. protestors outraged, igniteing fires and shutting down a major highway, attempt this police car. even looting stores. over a dozen officers injured. the mayor of charlotte pleading for calm. >> and i am asking our community, i am asking people here to please wait until all information is available. >> reporter: police say they were searching for a suspect with outstanding warrants yesterday when they saw 43-year- old keith lamont scott, who they were not looking for. authorities say scott got out of his car holding a gun.

the weapon. as the officers continued to yell at him to drop it, he sustained out posing a threat to the officers. >> reporter: that is when officer vincent fired, striking scott. investigators said that cpr was performed and he later died at the hospital. but scott's family gives a different scenario about what transpired. >> they jumped out of their trucks. they said hands up. he got a gun. he got a gun. pow, pow, pow, pow! that is it. he >> reporter: that police officer who fired the fatal shot is on paid administrative leave. the police chief is looking through scores of dash cam and body cam video, but he did say that officer who fired the fatal shot was not wearing a camera. ray reymundi, new york. >> in the meantime, the demonstrations in charlotte followed other protests in tulsa, oklahoma. in tulsa, there was a fatal shooting by police of an unarmed african-american man

old terrence crutcher walking to his video with his hands up. that was when he was shot and killed by officer betty shelby. she is now on paid administrative leave. her attorney defended her actions. >> she gets to the window of the suv and has his hands in the air, looks at them, the side of the car at officer shelby and his left hand goes into the window. >> reporter: in tulsa, crutcher's family and the community are calling for criminal charges against officer shelby. the u.s. justice de also investigating this case. and stories continuing to make headlines at the noon hour. new developments on the bombing attack in new york. how the father of the accused bomber warned the fbi about his son's agenda years ago. >> and volkswagon is getting hit hard with a major legal headache. how the massive diesel emissions scandal could have the auto maker dishing out billions of dollars to its investors. >> cleveland rocks. we know that.

. there are new developments in new york city. officials say that they found ahmad kahn ramhami, the suspect accused of planting bombs in and around the area, fingerprints at the scene of multiple bombings and evidence that he bought bomb materials online months ago. right now, he is facing federal
