26,000 people in the carolinas are taking no chances riding the storm out in shelter. and more than a million people in florida are still without power. and some people in this community are being told the lights may not be back on for at least a week. marcy gonzalez abc news florida. >> you've been tracking this for days. >> it's transitioning from a major hurricane to a smaller hurricane with big time storm let's come on over here. matthew weakens the latest 11:00 p.m. breaking weather news. it's barely a category two hurricane with maximum sustained winds 105 miles per hour. that's pretty much right here in the northern eye wall. we do see some hurricane force winds along the coast from charleston to savannah to brunswick but mainly tropical force winds there.

bit closer where there'll be some serious storm surge flooding already being reported. charleston beaufort into savannah storm surges between six and ten feet and a lot of you know that charleston elevation is 18 inches above sea level. that's going to be devastating there. finally the track, the updated track. look at this a category one hurricane. very close to charleston, south carolina by tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. close to wilmington, north carolina as a category one with winds between let's say 75 and 90 miles per hour. wilmington that would be tomorrow afternoon. close to shore, again winds subsiding but big time flooding, rainfall ten to fifteen inches. a lot of flooding through the weekend. the u.s. military is on the move headed for haiti. >> it's an understatement to say that that nation is in
