different than what she said on the campaign trail. last night, hillary clinton pivoting from the substance of the question and what she said in the speeches, but going after russia for being behind the leaks, documents put out there, saying russia is trying to be involved in the election, trying to influence it, and she said they are not trying to legislate me. >> and, karen, you covered these debates before, always get a sense in that room where you are, the spin room, which campgn based on the mood, who won? >> reporter: yeah, everybody always thinks they won. i mean, it's rare when you have campaigns coming in and saying that they did not win. i do remember, though, covering the 2004 bush campaign after the first debate, none of the bush staffers wanted to talk. well, tonight, the trump came pain made an aggressive effort in the spin room saying their guy won, seb abrasion mood on

her campaign thought she did it. to say who won, donald trump really needed to not just knock it out of the park, but a grand slam because of how badly he was perceived in the first debate. i don't think he hit that bar or moved any of the voters that he needs to move if he wants to change the narrative. >> all right. live from the debate hall in st. louis, karen, thanks so much for joining us. and stay with us. we're going to have more from the break. stay with abc for nor election coverage on "america this morning" and "good morning america." moving on now to the still dangerous aftermath of hurricane matth matthew. e evacuation orders still in effect. >> some rain-swollen rivers in the eastern portion of the state crest today at more than 35 feet above flood stage. officials warn this will persist into the next week.

coast leaving behind extensive damage from florida to the carolinas, and abc's matt gutman with the details. >> reporter: punches the coast with wind, rain, and fire. this house engulfed. the rain swamping 14 inches, a third of the average annual rain falling in hours. >> our state is facing major destruction, and, sadly, loss of life. >> reporter: the storm claiming 20 over a thousand water rescues. the water carving a canyon into the road. this woman's car submerged. notice that bundle under her arm? it's her baby, scooped by rescuers. it was the rain that created all of that flooding, but here along the coastal communities, it's wind pushing that storm surge on to land creating a water world k in every direction.

the howling storm blowing transforming and ripping down power lines in flooded south carolina. in florida, they are still assessing the damage. >> waves so big they crashed up and over the nine foot storm wall pushing boulders all through the neighborhood. the road here behind me? completely gone. >> reporter: back here, we met blake. >> good boards here. >> reporter: accompanying him in what's left of his home of his wife and two toddlers. estimated that financial toll could top $6 billion, and it could take parts of north carolina a long time to recover from all of this water, even before hurricane matthew. the ground here was saturated. it's not rained here in over 12

abc news. overseas now, the middle east. government forces say they are just about ready to move against the last iraqi city held by isis. the iraqi army is moving heavy equipment to mosul. the prime minister promised to retake the city before the end of the year after two years of occupation by isis. u.s. troops play a significant role in backing up the iraqi forces, and also in the middle east, two missiles fired from within yemen at a u.s. navy destroyer in international waters. there was no damage. the attempted attack came a day after an air strike by a u.s. backed coalition hit the funeral home kills dozens of people. the u.s. says they are reevaluating its support. a vigil held outside the palm springs police department after two officers were killed. they were shot dead saturday responding to a domestic disturbance call and a third officer injured.

did that work, that strategy, do you think of him bringing up that and having the women there, and was hillary's response, they go low, we go high, was that enough? >> reporter: yeah, diane, i don't think he gained anything out of it. like we said, donald trump had indicated for days that he was going to go after bill clinton so this was not a surprise to the clinton campaign. she was prepared. she knew how to answer the questions last night, but that facebook live appearance was a nowhere. three women who accused bill clinton of sexual misconduct, but what were they hoping to get out of it? they certainly got a burst of activity on the cable networks before the debate, but once the debate started, it was ultimately about donald trump's answer to that audio recording from 2005, and then his own attacks against bill clinton. now, as for hillary clinton's answer, i think it was successful. she didn't answer the question at all. she clearly didn't want to go

avoid an answer, why not bring in michelle obama with 70% approval ratings, a good buddy to turn to for assist ta. >> a surprising moment at the end of the debate? >> reporter: there was. the debate ended on somewhat a positive note like a pal let cleanser after 90 minutes of a lot of intense perm attacks. very interesting question of say something nice about here's what they said. >> i respect his children. his children are incredibly able and devoted, and i think that says a lot about donald. >> but she does fight hard and she doesn't quit and she doesn't give up, and i consider that to be a a very good trait. >> reporter: nice words, but notably both answered about themselves and how great they were, so, yeah, he's okay, she's okay, but talk about me too.

respect by saying she's a fighter. that says a lot. abc karen travers live, thank you. moving on now, and hillary clinton said she felt great about the debate, but added she was surprised by, quote, the absolute avalanche of falsehoods. >> mike pence said it was a big debate win for trump and proud to stand with him. for more, let's go to abc chief political analyst matthew dowd. >> in this debate, trump was behind f he did not improve himself. he needs a win, and he needed a win. i think when you look at points in the debate, over the course of the don't. he did fine at moments, she did fine in moments, lows on both sides, but basically, get out slight points to her winning the debate, but makes no difference in the polls. she walks out of the debate with a solid lead that she came into the debate with, and donald trump has one opportunity left, the next debate that changes dynami dynamics.

there are concerns now about the spread of illness across areas where the devastation is nearly complete. >> now to california where we learned new details about the man suspected of killing two palm spring police officers. 26-year-old john felix expected to be charged with first degree murder this week. authorities say it started saturday when his mother calmed police saying her son caused a disturbance. after four officers responded, felix allegedly opened fire. the fallen officers identified as veteran officer jose, and officer lestly, department for 18 months. how two trains sideswiped each other on the new york railroad this weekend. 33 people were hurt when a train doing maintenance caused a commuter train to derail. it came ten days after a train in jersey crashed into a terminal, killing one and

several times, and that trump doesn't have the discipline according to clinton. how effective was the confrontational approach was? >> reporter: good morning, dian. i think not that effective if your goal is to get more voters over to your campaign, and, of course, win the election. why? because these voters here in the united states have made it clear they do not want to get down in the gutter with these candidates anymore. and, tonight, we the gutter more than we've seen before starting at the very beginning. as you said, no handshake, but then also donald trump's signaling a new strategy in the campaign bringing in the bill clinton accusers from decades ago, sitting them in the audience, and so it's a real new low from an already pretty low campaign. >> and trump offered an apology for the 2005 recording of him talking about women. do you think he did enough to put that issue behind him? >> reporter: i think with some

enough. he, again, blamed it on that locker room banter, and that's not enough for voters who are undecided, and, of course, a lot of female voters we know in the last abc news washington post poll, donald trump with a 19-point gender gap with women. i think this is a question that will keep on getting asked over the next month. >> no doubt. plenty of remarkable moments, but one interesting one is when trump split with his running mate, mike pence, about the policy in how significant was that? >> reporter: it was significant, a stunning moment, and the most talked about moment on facebook. and it was incredible because not only did donald trump disagree with his running mate on syria policy, but he said he had not spoken to him about it. this is a time where, of course, the trump campaign is going through crisis, but the larger party is going through a crisis. it's not a time for the actual ticket to look like they are not united either.

and all those nice pleasantries ending last night will be completely forgotten. >> in 48 hours, there's been buzz online about mike pence possibly dropping off the trump ticket. what's the latest on that front? >> reporter: well, mike pence seemed to put the nail in the coffin on that. last night, he spoke to donald trump after the debate. we were told it was a very positive conversation, and pence congratulated trump debate, and he actually tweeted, too, so publicly tweeted that donald trump had a big win last night, and that he is looking forward to working with him to make america great again, so, a very public sign of support from mike pence, certainly, going to put to rest some of the talk, but that was really something over the last couple of days, the idea that as more republicans were jumping ship, that his running mate would be one of them. >> so questionable whether he'll attend events scheduled for later today.

some standout moments in terms of comments, people on social media talk about the body language in the whole town hall style with trump and clinton at times, it looked like they were stalking each other, following each other around the event space there. what was it like there in the hall? >> reporter: yeah. it's a super awkward setup. you have two stools for the candidates to sit on, but they are lowed to free wheel, walk microphones, and if you have not prepared for it, say one of the candidates didn't prepare for it, you might not know where some of the blocking and where to stand and where the cameras are. there's moments where hillary clinton is talking to someone in the audience, and over her shoulder is joint donald trump's head right there. hillary clinton was asked about it on her plane ride last night after leaving st. louis and said, oh, yeah, she felt the presence and knew he was there, but trying to give him space and go back to her stool and let him wander around, but remember four years ago? there were moments between mitt romney and barack obama where
