shocking new developments surrounding the plane crash that killed nine people in akron last year. we're learning of an apparent coverup after that crash. a high school mourning the loss of one of its students. police need your help to track down the person that shot and killed a 15-year-o we start off with a live look from our tower cam. there's downtown cleveland. sun is out, shining down. maybe not as nice as we've had the last couple of nice but still a decent day as you continue your weekend. welcome to this sunday edition of good morning cleveland. nick foley alongside janessa webb to tell us about the weather. not super strong sun but still mild conditions. >> we're still talking about

it's october. >> mid-october. >> it doesn't feel like fall. a few clouds here because we're tracking a change in our weather pattern. that is going to enter this afternoon as our next cold front starts to sweep in here. but highs today folks, still pretty toasty. right now downtown cleveland, 71 degrees. taking a wider view, talk about inland locations, you're in the mid-60s, good morning wooster, degrees. what we're seeing is a transition in our wind sheer. coming out of the south for the next three days. we could see recordbreaking heat as by tuesday we're back in the mid-80s. so pretty unreal here. southerly flow is going to stir up the winds throughout your afternoon. but allowing for the gradual warm-up. right now we're not picking up moisture, just a few clouds floating through the area. i am watching our next system.

northwest right now. if these storms continue to hold together we're looking about 2:00, 3:00, entering into northeast ohio. erie and huron county, you'll start to deal with a little bit of moisture. the brunt of this moisture though doesn't really start to slide in until the 5:00, 6:00 hour. daytime highs by 3:00 upper 70s. we start with some new bombshell developments in the 2015 plane killed nine people. a former captain and pilot told federal investigators he was asked to lie and alter records. news 5's derek waller has more. >> reporter: he's accusing his former employer of trying to cover up wrongdoing. everyone on board died when the private plane crashed into an apartment complex in akron last november. the ntsb says the pilot failed to maintain proper airspeed and

previous job for failure to attend a training. in interviews with the ntsb former executive flight pilot donny shackle ford says execu flight pressured him to lie and then he was fired from the company. he said they falsified pray flight safety data, saying "they made a scramble to change records and eliminate stuff right after that scent, it would make your head spin." the ceo acknowledged that questionable free flight weight data was an estimate and says he was unaware of that pilot's questionable work history. also now -- police needing your help identifying the suspect involved in the deadly mr. hero robbery that killed a teen. news 5's meg shaw is live in cleveland heights with some updates on this story. just a tragic end to a life cut too soon.

surveillance photos of the suspect and offering a $5,000 reward for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case. the coroner also identified that teen killed in this tragic incident. i want to show you surveillance photos, if you're not at your tv take a look. you can see the suspect was wearing gray spet pants, black mikey hoodie, gloves and bandanna over his face during the robbery. police say he barged into the mr. hero road 8:00 friday night, fired one shot at the teen working behind the counter, grabbed some money and took off. that single bullet killed 15- year-old sonny patel. patel was a sophomore in maywood heights high school. mayfield heights high school. >> reporter: he also said counselors will be on hand all

was caused inside. warning for you this morning. if you use any of those popular apps or web sites to sell your stuff. cleveland police say a couple who used the app offer up met two men at hot sauce williams on carnegie to sell their hoverboard when robbed. after grabbing the board worth $700 police say the suspects then opened fire on the victims. the comwas found near a truck with -- the couple was found near a truck with bullet holes in it, both taken to the hospital, lighter story -- the indians are red hot. they have not lost a game yet this morning, they are perfect in the post season and now head to toronto with a two-game lead in the alcs. this after a 2-1 win yesterday at home. and looking ahead now the tribe has today off, their next game is tomorrow at rogers center. first pitch 8:08. thank you for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm nick foley.

good morning. this time last sunday nick was giving me a hard time because we were at a chilly 50 degrees. today look at the difference. we're 70s. 10:10 now. the temperatures are continuously warming up across northern ohio. we're going to see this bubble of warm air invade our space days. today you're going to lose the sunglasses, unfortunately the "power of 5" is tracking some rain that is going to move in here by the 2:00 to 3:00 hour for western locations. right now greater cleveland lower 70s. good morning ashtabula, 67 degrees. lower 60s to the south. look at the daytime highs though across the board. many spots going to be in the lower 80s. there is that stir. winds. they will be whipping this afternoon about 15 to 20 miles

looking forward to the upper 70 for stark and summit county. donald trump's campaign is cutting ties with the head of ohio's republican party. matt borgas criticized trump in interviews after the tape of his lewd comments leaked out. he urged the gop nominee to stop attacking fellow republicans. in response trump reportedly says that borgas is an example of why people lost faith in the establishment and party leaders. the rift could affect trump's chances news -- now challenging his opponents who undergo predebate drug tests ahead of the final debate. he's worried she's using drugs to enhance her performance. he's also taking aim at the wider drug problem in the u.s. he just released a multipoint plan to combat heroin addiction. it includes speeding up fda approval of abuse deterring drugs. meantime hillary clinton's campaign bringing some star power to ohio.

netflix series alfre woodard toured in support of the democrat. also today former secretary of state madeleine albright starts a three-day ohio tour for clinton as well. she'll be promoting early voting. and then heads to the columbus and dayton areas tomorrow.

10:15. sunday morning. four people were killed after a pickup truck plunged off a highway bridge in san diego yesterday. the truck took a 60-foot fall with the bridge linking the city with coronado island and landed in a packed city park where a biker festival was going on. seven people the driver placed under arrest for suspected dui. the u.s. navy is investigating a possible missile attack on its ships patrolling off yemen's coast. just a few days ago the u.s. military retaliated retaliate for an earlier attack on one of its ships in the same area. elizabeth hur with more. >> reporter: u.s. defense officials say a group of u.s. navy ships were in international waters in the red sea when the uss mason detected

fired defensive missiles as a countermeasure. no ships were hit and all american warships in the area are safe. the u.s. navy is now investigating. in the meantime, according to the chief of naval operations admiral john richardson this may be the second attack on the uss mason and possible third attack overall targeting u.s. ships off the coast of yemen in the past week. the first attack prompted u.s. retaliatory measures just a few days ago when a fired tomahawk missiles into yemen. this did destroy three radar sites that the pentagon believes may have played a role in the missile firings. u.s. military officials say those missiles were fired from a region in yemen. a delegation was just returning from peace talks in kuwait to negotiate an end to yemen's civil war. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york.

state john kerry says two american citizens captured by yemeni rebels released. freed saturday as part of a complicated diplomatic arrangement, including airlifts for civilians wounded by an airstrike last week. a country struggling in the aftermath of hurricane matthew. the country's interim president is calling it an apocalyptic situation. hundreds of thousands of people are still waiting for ada week after the storm -- aid a week 546 people have died and haiti is seeing a surge in cholera cases. when national disasters strike the destruction is often plain to see but there could be another hidden disaster. with more here's senior medical contributor dr. timothy johnson. >> reporter: the winds and floods from hurricane matthew died down and what is left, the devastation of houses and cars, even the whole neighborhoods

homes. some lost everything. we've seen it before, after hurricane katrina barreled through new orleans in 2005. but now a new study on that natural disaster shows that such disasters can leave behind a different kind of devastation. no less destructive. researchers at the universities of illinois and miami report that substance abuse problems were a hidden legacy of katrina. the evidence, rise of hospitalizations for alcohol and drug misuse disorders in local medical centers. in regional hospital records in louisiana they found in 2008, three years after katrina the rate of hospitalizations for those with substance abuse disorders was 35% higher than before it hit. most affected were those between ages of 20 and 49, those exposed to the deepest floodwaters, and those living in neighborhoods where clean-up efforts were delayed. some of the greatest repercussions of a natural disaster may indeed be silent

those enduring matthew's aftermath. with this "medical minute," i'm dr. timothy johnson. other news -- when is the last time you took the day off from work? let alone had a real vacation? can't remember? you're not alone. this is an eye-opener. a new report found we threw away 222 million vacation days last year. that adds up to more than $61 billion in unused benefits. for those that can roll over time off the even higher, to 658 million unused days, equalling $272 billion, up 20% over last year alone. project time off found more than half of employees don't use all our vacation and on average we take about 16 days off a year now, 15 years ago we took 20 days off. so why is that? 37% of us are concerned about returning to a mountain of work. 30% can't afford a vacation. and 22% want to show their

but there is a tradeoff. burning out and lost productivity. 91% of senior business leaders believe employees return from vacation recharged and renewed but only 39% of employees feel supported when it comes to taking time off. project time off estimates that if we had actually used all our vacation time last year it could have translated to $223 billion in spending on the u.s. economy. which of course in turn would have generated new jobs. a lot of numbers we're throwing if you have the vacation days probably better you use them. you're going to feel better, you come back more energized for work. a lot of folks here have vacations and do that. >> we have to take time off. >> i want to take it sooner than later while we still have the mild temperatures. >> monday and tuesday. getting a little thick here. >> might be a sick day. or maybe vacation. >> looking at the skies now,

fantastic start. wonderful fall morning. but it surely doesn't feel like it most locations already in the lower 70s. a few clouds now to wayne county but folks, it will be short lived as we track our next cold front it's moving from the west. elyria 69 degrees. upper 60s for ashtabula. cooler air for wayne county tuskarawas county. currently 61 degrees. winds are going to stir up ahead of this front. they are coming from the southwest about 10 to 15 miles per hour. they will continue to chatter throughout your afternoon as the moisture starts to make its way through. they do die down later on this evening. 5 live radars,ing see after all the sunshine we've been dealing with, the clouds there back in tact across northern ohio but we are tracking right now, these lines of storms that make

kalamazoo. if these continue to really stay together as they are the backside of this moisture really enters here, i am forecasting around 2:00 to 3:00 for erie, huron county, even portions of mansfield, start to deal with more widespread rain. now the setup goes like this -- behind that moisture is a cold front. that is going to stall overnight. it lifts to the north as a warm front by tomorrow afternoon. it's going to allow for the warmer air really to be back in tact for your tuesday afternoon. let's show exact timing for the rain. as i said, 2:00, 3:00 it starts to affect western locations. it becomes more widespread throughout your evening. so if you have evening plans around 6:00, 7:00 tonight you can see it really makes its way into wayne county from stark and summit county. the darker greens and yellows, that's a little bit of embedded thunder that you can see, a few rumbles of thunder throughout your overnight. this really doesn't clear out

>> reporter: the cleveland heights police department did rehe's surveillance photos of the man they say robbed this mr. hero and killed that 15- year-old boy. and now they are offering a $5,000 reward for any information that will lead to an arrest. i want to show you photos, if you're not looking at the tv walk over and take a second look at these. you can see the suspect is wearing gray sweatpants with a white stripe down the side, a black nike sweatshirt and bandanna over his face. police say and 6 feet with a thin build. they say he went into the mr. hero on south taylor road around 8:00 friday, fired one shot at 15-year-old sonny patel and took money from the register and left. patel was a sophomore at mayfield heights high school. that school releasing a statement on their facebook

>> reporter: if you didn't get a good look at the surveillance photos don't worry, they are on our newsnet5 app now and i've tweeted them out this morning @megdshaw. if you recognize the man in the photos call crime stoppers or the cleveland heights police department. live in cleveland heights, meg shaw, another teen shot in cleveland. the 16-year-old tells police he was at a gas station on lee road when a man walked up to him and shot him. the victim then ran away. eventually receiving help from police. the officers took him to rainbow babies where he's now in stable condition. also on cleveland's east side yesterday, 25-year-old was stabbed, police say davon smith was walking along easton avenue when a man tried to rob him. smith fought become, was stabbed in the chest. he's expected to recover but

right now. bold attempt to commit a smash and grab turns into a police chase through the streets of two cities. police say the suspects used two smoal stolen mini vans, one driven through a convenience store when it was open. four men tried to steal the atm according to police but failed. the suspects then chased into the other mini van which officers chased until it spun out in cleveland. all five men inside ran off. a loaded handgun was crashed. euclid police say the two men shown here shoved the female gas station attendant to the ground and pointed a gun at her during the robbery. looks like one has a cast on their right arm. if you recognize them you're asked to call euclid police. scary moments in sandusky. you can see black smoke billowing into the air from a boat in battery park marinea. police say that boat exploded.

the plane. luckily i woke up in time to talk about something unrelated. the race for the white house. the week wrapped with president obama's visit to cleveland on friday for a modern-day whistle stop at burke lakefront making a pitch for hillary clinton. in a week dominated by the news of donald trump's words and alleged actions towards women. the strongest speech on the subject was not the president's but the first lady's. >> it was not just a lewd conversation. this was not just locker room banter. this was a poweul speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior. >> reporter: donald trump for his part vehemently denies each and every allegation that surfaced against him and fired back at his accusers. >> these people are horrible people. they are horrible, horrible liars. and interestingly, it happens to appear 26 days before our very important election. isn't that amazing? >> but we're now down to 23 days before the election and

started on wednesday and we were there at the post office when the first of the 180,000 absentee ballots from cuyahoga county were mailed out. interestingly enough by friday morning 2,300 hundred of them already filled out and returned. early voting this year is a week shorter than 2012 and the interest to start we found is lower. outside of the cuyahoga county board of elections volunteers from various campaigns wait for those arriving to cast ballots early in person. actor kal penn among them clinton and early voting. >> it's a great way to do it. not having to wait to election day. >> reporter: early voting kicked off wednesday with a hype and atmosphere of four years ago but in cuyahoga county not the volume. on day one in 2012 just under 1,900 people showed up to vote early in person at the boe. this year on day one that number was 1,172, 38% drop. >> i think it's too early to tell if anything. we have to see more of the trends. >> reporter: pat mcdonald is

work cut out for him as a member of the university's engagement election team. >> planning to vote in november? >> i think so. >> reporter: a new poll shows less than half of voters ages 18 to 34 will cast a ballot for clinton or trump. >> i don't like either of them. >> that seems to be the prevailing thing, particularly me lynnials. >> reporter: he says it's because the top pick, bernie sanders is no longer an option among young people. >> it's easy to say well, i lost the game and syningly flip the the board ross seit's rare to find students on campus excited about either presidential pick. >> they see a hillary clinton who they assume could be everything that is wrong with the political system. then the other side, their only other choice is donald trump who they feel is everything that is wrong with people. >> reporter: right now ross is reminding his fellow millennials on the importance of exercising their right to vote but says even that can be a tough sell based on the divide we've seen in 2016.

polarization, that it's happened is in my opinion likely to lead to darker days. >> reporter: the white house not the only thing up for grabs this year, the u.s. senate is as well. and here in ohio incumbent republican rob portman still holding a lead over democratic challenger ted strickland. on friday they went head-to- head in youngstown. among the topics portman and strickland battled over during the hourlong debate was strickland's record as governor. >> he left john billion record deficit. took the rainy day found from $1 billion to 89 cents and of those jobs that left ohio? nine out of 10 of them went to other states. >> we did lose a lot of jobs, more than some states because of the nature of our economy. we're heavily manufacturing state. and as i pointed out earlier, nafta and cafta and the job killing trade deals had a particular detrimental benefit month our state.

portman's support and endorsement of donald trump following his open mic comments released last week. >> for me it was the final straw. i took the extraordinary step of saying i could not support my nominee, republican nominee for president of the united states. >> he was too ashamed of him to stand on a platform with him. but continued to say i think you should be the president of the united states of america. what kind of twisted logic or twisted value system would lead of -- i don't know -- i don't what to call it. disingenuous behavior. >> reporter: they will face off again this thursday in cleveland, the day after the final presidential debate. talk about settings, what better place for the gloves to come off in the final presidential debate? it will be held in las vegas. can't make this up. with dmoksy 2016, i'm john kosich, enjoy your sunday.

really don't die down until your late evening as the front starts to track in. our composite radar picking up the clouds this morning. you've been spoiled with all that bright sunshine. today we really start to lose that due to the system that is brewing to our northwest. so detroit, southern michigan getting hit pretty hard right now. these lines of storms, they are staying together here and if they continue to track in here, western loca bit of moisture, maybe a possible rumble of thunder by the 2:00 to 3:00 hour. get prepared for that. it's erie and huron county. cedar point, sandusky, northern richland county. you can see a little bit of moisture but the bulk of it is not going to hit widespread until about the 6:00 hour. so hour by hour, look at this, look at this bar graph, off the charts. we're 10 to 15 degrees above normal.
