watching from the stands. he said after the game having his dad there meant everything. >> it was probably one of my more emotional starts i've ever had in my entire life, career, any situation baseball relatedded ever. it was -- i'm very fortunate for him to even be here, so to have him get to experience a world series game, obviously my first world series start was -- it meant everything. >> and to perform that well, such tomlin. now, news 5's key determinish is in chicago for the wreez, has more on tomlin's gutty perform abs. -- performance. >>reporter: good morning from chicago. it was one of the most nerve- wracking games of the post season. somehow, some way the indians find a way to shut down the hostile crowd at wrigley field and shut out the kebs heavy- hitting lineup. the indians are the first team in mlb history to have five shutouts in one post-season.
8:04 am
because it's pretty draining. this is why you play. you want to play in games where it's that intense, it's that emotional and you're kind of on the edge of your seat the whole game, but it was a lot of fun. >> we have a good pitching staff. we find a way to win. there's a lot to. i think if there's low-scoring games, we can win, if there is he high-scoring games, we can win. it's a great team to be a part of. i know everybody is saying it. it really is special, it's a blast to be out here. >> they're just going out there relaxed and ma you know, if the umpire misses a call, they're coming right back, focusing on the next thing, and they've done a tremendous job for us. you know, we feel like right now if our starters can get the ball to them where they can finish the game that we're in a pretty good spot. >> the stats are unbelievable. the stats are the reason we're here. i wish the staff would pick it up and make their jobs a little easier. they're the reason we're here and they're the reason we're making this much noise right now. they're outstanding.
8:05 am
and crazy situations, and it's just -- it was fun to be a part of. it's fun to be on the right side. >>reporter: what does it say about this team? not only do you have five shutout wins in the post-season which is a record, but you guys continue to find a way? >> that's us. we're going to continue to do anything to find a way and that's been us all year. we obviously lean on our pitchers to keep us in there and it gives us a chance to score, you know, as many as we need. so, you know, it's a great group that, yo work off each other and it's just fun. >>reporter: so game 4 later tonight and cory kluber takes the ball and mike napoly telling me there's no other guy he would want on the mound in game 4. he already shut down the cubs in game 1. perhaps a repeat performance here on saturday night. in chicago, hakeem dermish, news 5. >> hakeem, thank you very much. moving to much more serious news now. new information on a story we had as breaking news at 11:00. a local police officer stabbed

just -- and i just feels like a very unexpected tragedy. if they let me go talk to him, it probably would not have happened, the police would not be hurt and he would not be dead. >>reporter: now, that officer who was stabbed, he did go to the hospital for his injuries. we are told he is expected to be okay. so far we don't have the names of either of the officers involved. i do have a call into the police department. i'll keep you updated. live in north royalton, >> and just the worst case ending in that story. thank you, meg. coming up next, this plane bursting into flames on the runway. the chaos inside as passengers rush to escape. and are you dedicated enough that you would have this done to your hair? one cleveland barber is shaving and shaving up cuts of art in tribute to the indians. janessa. >> i am all in, all the way in. we are waking up to cloud coverage and warmer temperatures.

9:51 am
veck even bused in fans from outlying areas if they would buy indians tickets. >> bill veck, our owner, who was a wonderful guy, he was a great promoter. >>reporter: in a one-game american league playoff to break the tie for first place, the indians beat the boston red sox, moving on to tangle with the boston braves in the series. in six games, the indians claimed it all, winning in boston. so thele home was a raucous party on the rails. >> we had the club car and the diner, and the celebration was great, the champagne was dripping from the ceiling. >>reporter: when the train pulled into cleveland's union terminal, the railroad station, all of cleveland turned out to welcome home the 1948 world series champs the cleveland indians. a few days later they had a big parade through downtown cleveland. ball players rode in convertible cars, all of

9:53 am
there used to be a big pennant tied to the '48 win until -- >> in '49 when they were officially out of the running to make the world series, veck concocted this idea that he would have an elaborate funeral for the pennant hopes of '49. >>reporter: bill veck was the indian's owner and in an attempt to draw a crowd and make some money off slowed ticket sales, he had a funeral for the '48 series pen ability. >> it would be dan taking the cavs pennant down and burying under quicken loans if they don't make the playoffs this year. >>reporter: coaches and players dressed up at palbearers. when it was dug up from first energy, it was no where to be found. >> there were only a few logical places for it, either in a dumpster or someone has it or -- i mean, that's about it. i'm not sure where else. >>reporter: some say potentially it's this pennant

winning another world series. >> the world series is all over. >> we look for things that we can attribute this pain and frustration to and something like that is so memorable and we're still talking about it today, that, you know, an easy thing to point to say, you know, there was a funeral, there was something attached to this. >> and that was james girardi reporting. of course we'll have more on your weather forecast when we return. this is a look from downtown cleveland from our earth cam.

wash. a lot has changed since the indians last won the world series in 19 fraying, including a trip to the ballpark. probably the most obvious in that change the price of a ticket to see a world series game. if you've been on any ticket vending sites, you see they started at hundreds of dollars this year, but in 1948, you paid between $2 and $8. that is equal to $10 to $70 in today's money. and a coke cost you just 18 cents back then.
