under searing attack now under intense pressure to say whether the batch of e-mails are significant or not. this morning, armed with a court order, fbi agents are set to begin an intensive effort to go through thousands of e-mails sources say are connected to huma abedin, one of hillary clinton's closest confidants. these e-mails were discovered while the fbi was abedin's estranged husband, anthony weern. the fbi wants to know if the e-mails contain classified information and if they're connected to secretary clinton's private server. a barrage of attacks unleashed by officials blind sided by the announcements. democrats took aim. >> in july, the director said no

forward. there's nothing we have been shown, nothing the director has said to alter that conclusion. >> reporter: senate minority leader harry reid issued a pliserring attack. writing he regretted working to get comey confirmed. i now see that i was wrong. last night, abc news obtained a letter pend by former attorney general eric holder and dozens of other former prosecutors and high-ranking officials, including republicans, many of us have worked with director comey. all of us respect him. his unprecedented decision to publicky comment on evidence that may be part of an ongoing inquiry leaves us astonished and perplexed. >> i have talked to fbi agents, former fbi agents, prosecutor, former prosecutors who have skrachd their heads about how the investigation was conducted

scan drals different from those that work on the the clinton server issue. >> you heard they're astonished and perplexed because jusdy guidelines say you don't comment on an investigation or this close to an election. >> you have to look at what happened in july. where he holds the press conference. once he talks to congress about the details of the investigation, you can argue that he's stuck between a rock and hard place now. the problem was the fact that he didn't provide any information. that they may not have seen, it seems any or most of the e-mails they were talking about. then, james comey then tried to backtrack a little bit. makes an internal comment in a letter to all of the fbi trying to provide a little more context. bottom line this is why federal and local authorities often say we can't comment on an ongoing investigation. why?

>> and because of that vacuum, he's under pressure to mutt out more information closer to an election as they go through the e-mails. >> i don't expect he'll do that. i don't expeekt we'll hear anything else from james comey. it's unlikely this is going to lead to any kind of criminal indictment. they're looking at these new e-mails. they're not revisiting the old investigation. they're not looking back and saying, did we get it right the firts time? this is just a que there something new that will surpass that very high legal standard which is intentional mishandling of classified information. >> it's easy to run computer programs to determine if these were duplicates. if they can determine that quickly, wouldn't he be obligated to put that out? >> yes. i would expect him to say something if those are e-mails

in western oklahoma. the 38-year-old refused to give up and died in a shootout with police. about 130 miles northwest of oklahoma city. police had been searching for him since october 23rd. he was first accuse of shooting two police officers and car jacking a couple as he fled. he shot another woman in the thigh and drove eight miles to a home where police say he brutally killed two family members. what frustrated when he went to social media to brag about the story. >> it hurts. >> reporter: he live-streamed his getaway. >> wow, that really hurt, see, i'm bleeding where the police shot me. >> reporter: authorities caught up with vance sunday morning when police spotted him leaving the camp site. a county sheriff pulled him over at 9:30 p.m. they traded bullets.

30 minutes later. a police officer was shot in the shoulder in the shootout. those injuries are not life-threatening. he's been treated for that injury this morning. robin? >> all right, steve, thank you. now to amy with this morning's other top stories, starting with another scare for only airline passengers. >> that's right. a flight about to take off from ft. lauderdale was evacuated because of a bomb scare. a passenger reportedly saw other passengers about bombs. >> we are the aircraft that had the bomb threat. we would like to declare an emergency. >> police came on board, took the two men off, evacuated the plane. the plane was searched. nothing was found. new drone video just in showing the utter devastation in italy. a 600-year-old church and other buildings destroyed. sunday's 6.6 magnitude quake is

want to talk to david kerley about this. we see the video from hector, a passenger on the plane. showing just how chaotic it was this those few moments as the takeoff was aborted. what have we learned since then? about what caused all this? >> they saw the fire and the flames. they wanted to get out of there. swhapd that 767 is on the runway. it's getting ready to take off. throttled up. the pilot hears a bump. it was the right and in the engine, you're compressing the air to explode it with fuel. and what happened was that the engine let go. a part in the compression session blew up. it's called an uncontained failure. parts hit everywhere. one part hit 3,000 feet away, another hangar. with the fire and the flames, everybody is coming out. the compress sant part was the problem. the question is, the good news i would say is look what happened.

fuel tank in it. that's where the fire and flames came after the engine blew. everybody got out. that's the good news. you have an ingeneral failure, everybody got out with aboutinjuries. >> that was powerful. >> it was. the engine is built if you have a failure lying that, most of the parts are supposed to stay n inside. an uncontained tail your, they fly everywhere. >> very fortunate no one was hurt. as the inv to go forward, what will the ntsb being looing at and are there worries about other planes with this engine having the same problem h the future? >> yeah, it's not just american airlines that's worried about this. it's a worry about the entire fleet. is there something wrong with the part that failed in that specific engine? that's what they want to know. if that's the case, it will be a change on all the engines on all the aircraft.
