from baltimore to minneapolis. protesters have hit the streets. >>we're here every day for african-americans and all types of minorities in our country. >>at issue race relations between the officers on the streets and the communities they're sworn to protect. the problem in sharp focus two years after officers shot and killed tamir rice. >>these two years have felt like hell and many sleepless nights. when i close my eyes to try to get some rest, all i my son being shot. >>tonight on news 5, we're digging deeper asking has anything changed. >>this week marks two years since 12-year-old tamir rice was shot and killed by cleveland police officers. it's a story that drew national attention and scrutiny to the city of cleveland. >>tonight we heard from some cleveland residents about their feelings on race relations, your relationships with police and

>>james gerardy led the conversation. and you got mixed reviews when you asked if anything's changed. >> reporter: yeah, danita, and you're going to hear the reaction to that exact question. today we spoke with an enter racial couple, two white church pastors and three young african-americans. we asked them about how race plays into their everyday lives. when we met at a church in cleveland heights. has anything changed for better, for worse? >>not at all. i think things have changed. i think that everything has become very clear and in the forefront. >>i don't look at it as change for the better or change for the worse. i think we're still in the midst of the tension, and we shall see. >>people have been able to be seen especially in comment sections and responses to tamir's case specifically. >>i can't say specifically here in cleveland it has changed,

>>i don't think any of the contributing factors that create such an incident have really changed. >>i think that it's gotten worse because racism is way more out of the closet now. >> reporter: two years after one of the most high profile police-involved shootings in u.s. history, three men and three women shared open and honest thoughts about the state of race in their city. >>the de completely tragic. there's no way to go around that. but the issues connected to them and that branch off from them are something that should have been addressed long before he ever went to the park or long before the police ever got the call. >>we have had young people being killed by police since emmett hill, before emmett hill. it's not getting worse. it's getting filmed. >> reporter: have you experienced anything as a couple

gerardy, jus 5. just days after tamir's death the department of justice released a scathing report calling out officers for using excessive force and then nearly a year ago the city signed ascent decree aimed at changing the department. we look at the changes continuing with on your side sarah buduson. today you learned what's next. >> reporter: rob, on monday the federal monitor reform will release a new proposal key to helping officers better police our streets. for two years we've been telling you about the need for more crisis intervention training to help officers respond effectively to calls involving the mentally ill. you may recall that's when tanisha anderson died while in police custody. her family called for an ambulance. officers came instead and she died after being restrained. the new policy mandates officers receive at least 8 hours of

community will have the opportunity to offer feedback before it takes effect. we've also been telling you about problems with the civilian police review board in the next few weeks the monitor team will introduce a new manual to transform how the board investigates complaints. on top of all of that the team's working on a new plan related to equipment and resources. unlike most major cities, many cleveland officers lack working computers in their cars. sarah buduson news 5. new tonight at 6:00 a cleveland police officer and his sister are facing charges for illegal use of a police database. theodore and melissa perez were arrested in july after prosecutors say they were using the information for a private security company that theodore runs. both were arrested in july and theodore perez has been suspended without pay. >>when you come help me explain

why they don't have a father on thanksgiving. >>a mother in agony, a family mourning the loss of a father of four children after he was shot and killed snyde a barbershop. the family pleading for help to identify the man who pulled the trigger. news 5's tara melina has more. >> reporter: barely holding it together angela davis is asking for help finding the man who shot her son to death inside this barbershop. >>please, if you know something come over. >> reporter: police say they don't have many leads right now, but they do know the man who shot and killed charles davis had a small child with him last night, a little boy who watched the whole thing happen. >>this small child witness must have been terrified. >> reporter: police hope whoever talks to him gives them a call. >>we are asking that that person that he tells to please give us

that's all we need. right now the holiday rush is underway to get cars packed and on the road for the long weekend. >>tens of millions of people are expected to pack up their bags and head out for thanksgiving dinner. right now you look at four views of the city. we were clogged up a little bit about an hour ago, but now things look to be moving right along. everybody's rushing to get where they're going, mark johnson. >>you notice the shimmer of indicating some wet spots due to the rain showers, but here some good news for evening travelers. this first wave of rain is pushing off to the north and east. it's now lake geoga, ashtabula counties moving away. we've got drew weather moving in so the bulk of the area should be dry. 39 cleveland to akron,

philly. then by midnight, 1:00 a.m. through 4:00 a.m. starting to lower by 7, so the bulk of the rain is coming in overnight tonight and it should be ending as your getting up and putting your turkey in the oven. we're going to have a few isolated showers around during the day thursday, but the main area of rain should be moving out of here. that's steady rain. 38 degrees at 6, 37 akron/canton. notice mainly dry at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. dry weather and temperatures going up tonight. lower and middle 40s after midnight. so just take the sweater and rain gear if you're staying out late. right now a local group is looking for a little help this holiday season to re-shock their shelves. hundreds of boxes full of donations for goodwill ruined after a fire burned up their warehouse. news 5's bob jones

for help. >>smoke was billowing from the entire warehouse for several hours. >> reporter: all of the smoke took a terrible toll on hundreds of goodwill boxes filled with shoes and purses, clothing, framed pictures, toys and much, much more. >>it's thousands of pounds. it would supply all our stores for about three months worth of material and we've lost it all. >> reporter: the fire started on the other side of the warehouse owned by detroit diesel, but the smoke poured over to the goodwill side. cardboard stored too close to heaters may have sparked the blaze. >>anytime an organization like goodwill loses inventory this time of the year, it's just a tragedy. >> reporter: all of the donated teams in a slew of boxes now unuseable. for goodwill the fire couldn't have happened at a worse time of year. one of the greatest needs right now, housewares. >>anything that you maybe use in the kitchen, a toaster, a can opener, glasses, plates.

donations typically drop off in the winter, so the loss from the fire is especially devastating for goodwill which supplies 24 stores with donated items. >>for christmas we would put out a ton of toys for christmas. we've lost them all. >> reporter: the non-profit is urging people to donate at goodwill stores because replenishing the stockpile may help many in need over the holidays, plus revenue from sales supports programs that help residents find and keep good jobs. >>please come forward and clean out your houses cleaning. do it now. >> reporter: in canton, bob jones news 5. we're getting results tonight over a hazard that could put lives in danger. we'll look at the problem and what's being done to fix the issue. and ohio roadways turning into a death trap. the discovery made about some drivers getting behind the wheel. and cleveland is getting ready for the first big snow. a look at their impressive

your efforts today prompted the city to act. >> reporter: that's right, rob. a light post that used to stand right here had been sitting horizontal way down there for more than a month. a hazard for cyclists and an eyesore for everyone. in the last few hours crews came to remove the post after we started asking questions, but there are still plenty of problems on this bridge that frustrate those >>and you have families coming across the bridge in nice weather and everything else to get back and forth. that's a heck of a welcome to cleveland. >>i don't even want to look at it. >> reporter: the detroit superior bridge, a beauty from afar, a much different story up close, a pile of human feces sits under the out of commission bus stop. not far away is the this de -- is this decaying

kiera deboast, frequent bridgers, say these eyesores have been here more than a month. and then there's the trash. a constant problem in such a windy place. the city of cleveland is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the bridge. when we requested an interview with them today, a spokesperson told us in this e-mail that no one is available to talk. >>where's my tax money? i work downtown. >>what is my tax money being used for if it's not being used for something as little as this? >> reporter: we reached out to the downtown cleveland alliance, a non-profit that employs workers to clean downtown streets daily, but they told us the detroit superior bridge is outside of their boundaries of operation. live in cleveland i'm kristin bolts, news 5. we're never going to get t city leaders say they are ready

are ready for the first snow of the year. they have added new trucks and seasonal drivers. they have also added more than 67,000 pounds of salt on hand. historically the first big snowfall of the year happens between november and december. stay tuned to mark johnson, because it won't be a surprise to you if you listen to mark. and thankfully there's no snow on the roads yet as everyone's started getting ready to head out for the holiday weekend. >>there's something out there. as mark said you can see the sheen as we look at the traffic moving quite well, but there's always that worry for drunk drivers on the road. this year the state of ohio has seen a large increase in drugged-driving increase on the highway. the state patrol says so far this year there have been nearly 3600 crashes the result of drivers under the influence of drugs. that number's making up for 33% of all impaired driving crashes this year. according to officers it's more

drivers over drunk drivers. there are signs to keep an eye out for if you suspect something. >>dilated pupils, they look like they're falling asleep. their eyes start to lose and their forehead starts to droop down. >>and remember if you spot somebody you think is driving under the influence, officers say you can dial pound 677 from your phone to report them. here we go. wet weatheis lower great lakes. there's not major travel troubles anywhere in the u.s. we do have the bulk of the rain showers coming out of indiana moving into northern ohio. if you're traveling especially west over the next six hours or so toward fort wayne or indy you've got wet w it's a moderate to briefly heavy rain. right now things are quiet for the most part.

robert griffin iii showing signs of progress. he returned to practice since he injured his shoulder. he has not been cleared for contact, and according to the coach he qb sunday when the browns host the giants. and hogan is expected to be the team's back-up qb. the team has 21 days to activate rgiii or he'll permanently remain on injured reserve the rest of the season. the team is feeling good about him reaching this milestone. >>i think he wants it badly to be back out there with his teammates. he wants to do the work and then be a part of it
