temptation to eat is stronger than our new years resolutions. isn't that the truth. we are all setting goals for the new year, but what about kids? should they be encouraged to set goals as well? 8 on your side has answers today. joining me now is tampabayparenting.com patricia. we appreciate having you here. i have a 14-year-old and 10- year-old soy haven't thought about sitting down and setting goals but you recommend it. >> it's great time as you mentioned the beginning of the year to set the goals. so generally most experts recommend a minimum of 208 minutes a day. set a time that is best for them. sometimes it's bedtime, sometimes after school but encourage your kids to read. >> read, read, read. and if they are not reading where you think they should be, you recommend getting them tested. >> absolutely. it's important to see what is going on with the reading.
4:32 pm
is it they have reading comprehension difficulty? it's really important they get tested and then you can help them best to read. >> tell us about setting the goals for reading. i think a lot of times they compare themselves to their rends. it really depends on age level and when that switch is flipped for them. >> it's really important. so what they can do is set up their own reward system. if you read x amount of days, if you read x-amount of books. go over the books with them. especially if they are older to look at how much they are comprehending and reward them. >> and you know, i have a daughter that loves to go buy new books all the time. be i feel like she has a library worth of books. but you feel like you are encouraging the good habits. how do you really follow how much they are retaining, how much they are reading and staying on top of that? >> a lot of times you can check with the schools. each year hay are required to see what reading level they are on.
4:33 pm
but even so a lot of times parents can get involved too. and look through, skimp through the books with them and ask them about the characters and what happens. and seeing how much they are retaining. >> with all the screen time they get, i think reenforcing reading is more important than it has ever been. >> it's very important. unfortunately 1-4 children will never learn to read. we know by the age or third or fourth grade if they are not reading proficiently, there is a higher chance they will remain on health care -- a lot of us saw a little bit of sunshine. but those along the coast, this is what you have been dealing with more of today. you can see the over cast skies at clearwater beach. only 64 degrees because of the extra cloud cover. we have seen winds fairly light out of the southwest.
4:34 pm
to see a few showers back into the forecast through tomorrow. and then we are tracking our next cold front. this will arrive saturday evening and bring us a chance to see more rain as we head into saturday evening and into the over night hours. behind this front we are looking at another cool down. it looks like we will deal with temperatures all the way through next week. so a prolonged period of below average temps. for this evening, it's pretty comfortable. you may want a light jacket as we head into the evening hours. but shouldn't be too chilly as clouds build back throughout the over night hours. we'll only make it down to the low 60s by the time you wake up tomorrow morning. winds will be light so a mild morning with showers and the potential to see showers around during the afternoon hours. but with the southerly wind flow we look at temperatures that should make it back to the mid 70s despite the extra cloud cover around. at the moment you can see near
4:35 pm
heaviest of the cloud cover but this will continue to spread inland as we head throughout the over night hours. out in the gulf you can see not only a lot of cloud cover but showers as well. these are move into the panhandle. and this disturbance will skirt through our area. you can see over night it should remain mostly dry. tomorrow morning a couple isolated showers and then these should push inland as we head into the evening. temperatures will still be fairly warm and then by the time we move into saturday morning, we should be a dry start to your saturday. but notice a lot of cloud cover around. similar to what we saw this morning and then by saturday evening we're already tracking that next cold front. and it will still be off to the west. note the rain ahead of it. our rain chances going up saturday afternoon, continuing into saturday night. but things look to clear out for your sunday. sunday is when temperatures start to drop. we should be sighing mostly dry conditions. we will say about a 30% chance of rain on friday.
4:36 pm
everywhere but we will see some showers throughout the day. slightly better chance of seeing more rain as we head into saturday evening. but just that slim 10% chance of a lingering shower on sunday. sunday will be the drier day this weekend but with the north winds kicking in, it will be cooler and we're looking at dry conditions into next week. currently at 68 in weeki wachee. 70 in brooksville. 73 in brandon and lakeland. tomorrow most of us should make it into the mid 70s. still fairly warm on saturday before the collier weather moves back in. next week it looks like we will stay in the 60s all week long. good thing we have that fall winter like apparel back out of our closets. >> thanks, julie. now for a real life last city story. >> while these dogs are not collies it's still amazing.
