crews put the fire out within 10 minutes and investigators determined the cause was accidental. clean up and damage assessments under way after a tornado touched down in cape coral. the national weather service has given saturday night's tornado a preliminary rating of ef-2 with winds up to 135 miles per hour. trees were pulled out of the ground, homes damaged as you can see in this video. streets were flooded, parking lots turned into ponds. it was just horrible. residents say they were caught off guard by this. >> it shocked us. it came out of nowhere. the alarms didn't go off until after. >> everyone was outside and i pushed them in the house. everything was gone. we have a bouncy house and it's like two blocks down the road. >> the good news is there were no serious injuries reported. governor scott toured that area this afternoon. that storm damage is part of

our area this weekend. now it's bringing colder air with it. >> i'm sure some people love that. >> storm team 8 meteorologist bryan bennett in the weather center tonight. >> that's right. that cold front brought us showers and storms yesterday evening part of a big storm system that will bring us cooler temperatures. you can see the storms as they rumbled through yesterday evening. we had a water spout at bradenton beach. the weather service confirmed it was an ef-2 in cape coral and on the ground for 3.4 miles. it had a maximum wind speed of 132 miles per hour. things have quieted down now that we have the cool front that passed off to our south around miami. behind it cool air ushering in from the north. we're at 64 in palm, 57 in crystal river. by 9:30

being checked out, vaccinated and spayed or neutered before they can be adopted out. >> so what we're doing right now is just a physical exam. we're getting a good description of them making sure it matches up with the paperwork. we're going to guess the breed and ages and do vaccinations and worming as well. >> the dogs vary in breed, condition and sex. rachel leeman is one of the veterinary technicians. >> we know this one is a girl, probably a retriever or hound mix. then we have that give her a name. i think you would be a good lola. >> conditions in mississippi forced the humane society there to look for other homes. >> so with the flooding of course you're going to have flooding in shelters out there too, damp, moist areas, any power losses.

what all they received but the conditions weren't good for keeping dogs in a nice, safe dry home. >> more than 100 dogs were rescued from that shelter. >> here's a good response to get these guys into a good home and get you guys safe. >> that's it. they're going to get checked out by the vet tomorrow. >> reporter: and so the question of the hour, when can these dogs be adopted. well, the humane society representative told me that people need to check the society's website. it could be later this week, possibly, mel, as early as tuesday or wednesday. they certainly are friendly. >> they are adorable. can you sneak one in the live truck and bring them to me? >> reporter: i don't know if your husband would approve of that. >> probably not. we already have three rescues. chip

the deadline to enroll in the affordable care act is just 3 weeks away. today president obama's health and human services secretary visited tampa to encourage americans to enroll soon. secretary sylvia burwell joined bob buckhorn and kathy caster. they spoke to the congregation at the new zion baptist church. >> we need people to sign up. we're reaching out to the target targeted markets that are hard to serve. when it's all said and done we need folks to sign up. their lives will be better as a result of this. >> open enrollment ends at the end of the month on january 31st. the count down is on tonight for college football's national championship game. we're going to be ready by 8:30 tomorrow. >> they want to make sure they get the games in there as well. coming up you'll hear from both coaches as alabama and clemson

week we are keeping an eye on the possibility for severe weather here in the bay area on thursday, thursday night and friday morning that we'll watch for that possibility. right now temperatures are pretty spread from 57 degrees in crystal river and inverness down to 70 degrees in sebring. that's because that cool front is bringing in the cooler air for the north. in minneapolis it's 1 degree below zero. that's the current air temperature. here's the wind chill, 15 below is what it feels like in minneapolis. it feels like 20 below right now in cedar rapids. can you even fathom that when you step outside your door and are wearing a short sleeve shirt? not quite the case. cool. some of that cool air will make it down to our area. 63 tomorrow, 65 on tuesday and

thursday and then a peak in the temperatures on friday and saturday back in the upper 70s near record highs by the end of the week. not a bad week considering on average this is our coldest week of the year. this is the gloomiest time of the year. just dealing with some clouds over night, gradual clearing tomorrow morning. temperatures will drop down into the middle 40s for much of the bay area over night. head north in citrus county you could see the upper 30s to lower 40s over night tonight. so a chilly night for everybody. back to work or school tomorrow morning you definitely need that jacket or maybe a coat. tomorrow afternoon if you're a photographer get out that camera because it will be beautiful. deep blue sunny skies, a lovely afternoon. in fact, it will be so blue it can be bluer than the screen we have there. kind of cool though.

well, day two of wild card weekend kicked off with the fourth coldest game in nfl history. we thought it would be 1 degree in minneapolis for the vikings and seahawks but it was minus 6. we were in something for special or bizarre and we got just that. 4th quarter it's 9-0 vikings when russell wilson finds doug baldwin to cut it to 9-7. teddy bridgewater to adrienne peterson and the unthinkable, adrian peterson stripped there. the seahawks we cover and kick a field goal to take a 1-point lead. plenty of time for the vikings to head down the field. bridgewater to rudolph. 24 yards and that sets
