firefighters train for aftermath of a plane crash. >> a survivor shared her advise. good evening i'm keith cate. >> and i'm jennifer leigh. jen holloway is joining us live. >> reporter: two boats drifted into iranian water in the gulf. u.s. officials are telling us one of those boats had mechanical problems. secretary of state john kerry immediately called tehran. he told leaders the whole thing was a complete accident.

type of boat is a riverring boat. it's a boat used by the navy pretty much daily. they're designed to go in flat water, and often have machine guns on them as well. we will update you on this tire -- story as soon as we get more. now to more breaking news. news about a gas leak is causing a traffic leak in pinellas. this is happening on 26th avenue north. >> 66th street is closed in both directions and paul muller is live on the scene. paul what can you see and what can you tell us. >> reporter: a lot happening out here on 126th avenue north. a gas leak as you mentioned happening around 3:00 this afternoon. as for evacuations, two strip malls one right over here and the one just down south here on 66th street. that means six to 12 businesses they've been evacuated for two hours right now. here's what happened officials are telling us a private contractor working with a

and as a result, officials got here to secure the scene. largo, seminole trying to clamp that line. let's hear what officials have to say. >> the evacuations were just in case the gas were to find an ignition source and light off. we don't want anybody to get injured. >> i have my friend so i'm going to visit there. she came out and they told her there's a gas leak and they would not let anybody in. >> back live here right now, 66th street north, as you can see, there are no cars going through. we've seen a couple here or there. but we can tell you as of last check, officials are telling us it's 66th street north, two blocks in each direction of 26th avenue north. shut down should be reopened within the hour. of course we'll stay on top of this breaking news for you, guys. >> paul newman live in pinellas county. drivers are dealing with a

a new lane alignment is slowing things down quite a bit. this is a live look from eagle 8hd. this is between dale mavery and hyde. some drivers were hoping this would bring some instant relief to that area. as you can see they were wrong about that. and mark douglas is joining us live with more information on that. >> reporter: the spokesperson for the dot tells me the agency really tried to down play expectations this morning and with good cause. now you can see the traffic now is thick but it is moving frankly better than it was this morning. i drove through it myself on my way to work. as you can see on the periscope video i recorded, it was a real mess. new traffic pattern, caution, caution, caution. >> reporter: there was plenty of caution as dozens of morning

temporary ramp at the dale mavery that's messing things up. once they get the new lanes opened up, that should get better. but he's blaming the short ramp on the northbound ramp on dale mavery. >> better days ahead. mark douglas reporting for us. thank you for that. >> yeah. and the court has ruled the death penalty is unconstitutional. >> reporter: judges and not juries decide whether or not criminals are sentenced to death in florida but the united states supreme court ruled the system unconstitutional tuesday. the ruling came down just as lawmakers settled the legislative session. juries don't need to be unanimous in recommending a death penalty to a judge and the judge has the final say. senator altman challenged the nomination to change that before the ruling came down. >> that process is going to remedy better justice.

of the past and i think when we change it we'll prevent mistakes of the future. >> reporter: the ruling stems from the case of timothy lee hurst a popeyes employee accused of killing his customer. florida's attorney said that it's still early and that her office is reviewing the ruling. >> do you think this is going to need adjustments? >> perhaps. it's just coming down and we have to look at it to see what's needed for a fix. >> reporter: if the law state wants to keep the death

for the a -- nearly 100 prisoners currently sit on death row. a little crime alert for you. tampa police are looking at a series of car break-ins in tampa. the homeowner was in the house in the shower. and in another case a burglar alarm went off and the thief at that point fled before police could get there. police have one photograph of a white car that was seen near a house that was robbed. it was spotted near mcdeal. police are looking for any information that may help solve this series of crimes. it almost goes in saying that first responders have to be prepared for the worse case scenario. for firefighters one of the worse situations is battling a fuel fire. josh thomas joins us now live in lakeland where this is all happening. >> good evening jen, as you already know, lakeland's fire station number seven has not

designed far dual purpose to help protect the near by residential community and also serve an even closer lake land linder hospital. >> reporter: this is the situation that firefighters hope to never face. a plane goes down spilling fuel everywhere. but if they do, they want to be prepared. all this week, these firefighters are going through training that simulates an emergency at the airport. it's a chance to fight the flames they would fight at the real fire and learn where they can make improvements. >> there's been a lot of discussions about each and every area. what went wrong, what went right: and i think they learned a lot. >> reporter: the fda requires these firefighters to go through this training annually. but this is the first time they've been able to do it in their own backyard. >> we normally go down the homestead home base but we

>> oh my god, i'm just glad that you're okay. >> reporter: last year the firefighters were able to put their skills to use when a plane crashed at lakeland's airport. they also want to be prepared when sun and fun rolls around in spring. >> we have a highly trained teams of firefighters that god forbid anything does happen, we're there to help. >> reporter: this training has been beneficial for first responders. >> i guess if you are going to make mistakes this is the place. >> this is the place we want to make them so we can correct them. >> reporter: the firefighters still have a lot more training ahead of them this week. but it's training that will come in handy if they ever face an emergency at the airport. >> it's cheaper for them to do it in their own backyard. >> reporter: no question about that. it's not only cheaper but it

back, they continue to support yearly testing. >> it went from five centimeters to 7.5 centimeters in weeks. so if i would have waited till it was 50, i wouldn't be here. >> reporter: no matter the guidelines both women agree waiting until 50 is the greatest risk of all. >> it just doesn't work. waiting and seeing you will lose your life with cancer. >> reporter: well the new guidelines say if you are high risk to start screening earlier around 40. but dr. neil tells me that 75% of breast cancer diagnosed in women in their 40s isn't from women considered to be high risk. jen. >> a lot of people suspect this is all about money so what does it mean for insurance? >> yeah, jen insurance does base coverage off of these governmental guidelines but by

we did a very high humidity relative to the year. not many freezing temps but patchy frost is certainly possible tonight. you can see 44 degrees. temperatures back in the upper 70s, mid-70s by the ends of the week friday and saturday. but then dropping down again once we hit sunday with a brief rain chance there and the rain chances will drop off along with the temperatures as you will see until monday. 53degrees until 8:00 p.m. definitely bring a jacket. a light sweater. you can see the temperatures from the mid-40s to low 50s. very similar to what we experienced this morning. the dewpoint is a little lower. so the air is a bit drier so that may make a difference to help keep it as cool as it was previously. 57 new port richie. 59 brooksville.

seabring. high pressure backed off a bit. but we still have the northernly flow and that's what's keeping it so cool. some of which you saw on the camera images but much more sunshine up in the pasco, hernandez and citrus county at the moment. no precipitation. high pressure will continue to shift so we'll stay on the cool side of that for wednesday afternoon. so still a coolish day. as we get into thursday later in the day we start to watch our rain chances increase into friday as an area of low pressure approaches from the west. for thursday, mostly cloudy skies the rain will move in later in the day and into the early part of friday. 64degrees for wednesday. 69degrees on thursday. 74degrees by friday. that's our best rain chance with that tail ends of thursday with the small rain chance there. temperatures then cool down again next week with highs back in the 60s. you can see for martin luther king day as well on tuesday. 62degrees overnight low temperatures in the mid- and upper 40s.
