tv   Today  NBC  January 15, 2016 12:00pm-1:00pm EST

12:00 pm
ive you your day back. what you do with it is up to you. tylenol . >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with kathie lee gifford and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza.
12:01 pm
12:02 pm
okay, paul, the important thing is, we don't think there
12:03 pm
are any injuries. there is a pet grooming business. we don't think there are animal injuries either. so that's key in this. this taking place at 1000 tamiami trail. ray works in that plaza and he took pictures with us. ray, you were right there when all of this happened. and you are on the ground as we speak. what can you tell us about what happened? i'm sorry, this is david crunk. >> yes. it was pretty intense. i mean, i was working there. there was about -- i don't know, right before 11:00 and all of a sudden, just a crazy roaring started, from above us. and lasted about 10, 15 seconds. and then it was over. and then we we want out and opened the back door and the whole roof had just blown, peeled off the back, covered all of our cars. it was -- it was pretty interesting.
12:04 pm
>> yes, it's a mess looking at the pictures that you shared with us. nobody appears to have been injured and nobody is trapped and we think even the pets are fine? >> no, no one is trapped. and yeah, we are actually right next door to the pet grooming business. they just got all the dogs out and they are all fine no. injuries or anything like that. >> so looks like the cars are the biggest casualty in all of this, the inconvenience of. and luckily as our photo journal list described, it sounds like the roof peeled off. more just the layer on the top, right? >> yeah, just that aluminum layer, you can see just crumpled up. some still on the roof but most is laying out back. but yeah, just property, no injuries, thank god. >> we appreciate your time. what's your business? >> yeah, i work at evolve. >> okay. well, we appreciate you sending those pictures to us and take time to talk with us and sorry
12:05 pm
about the car, they seem to be the biggest problem at this point. >> oh, yeah, it. >> happy friday. all right, thank you so much. meteorologist leigh spann. leigh, i have seen tornado warnings and various weather issues throughout the day. what do you know about what happened in that area? >> okay so, what we have been tracking all day is a line of powerful showers and thunderstorms. and in that, there were a lot of strong wind gusts. as that line pushed south towards sarasota and venice, we did get some stronger winds and we even had some tornado warnings in lee county which is south of sarasota. so we did have an area of the line that got a little stronger and may have caused a down burst as opposed to a twisting like a tornado, really just a rush of very strong winds coming out in one direction from the storm. that can cause damage like that where everything is moved in one direction.
12:06 pm
of course, the national weather service will go check that out. but when you have the fact that the roof was all on one side of the building, it's an indication that again it was straight line winds or could have been straight line winds. at this point, we are pretty much in the clear. some showers through highlands county. i do want to show you that technically there's a tornado watch for the southern tip of desew at that and highlands county. that's going -- deseto county. you heard david onscene saying that it happened right before 11:00. so a little more than an hour ago. and yes, there were storms. quickly pushing from west to east, through that area. and that's what may have caused some of the very strong winds because at that point, just to the south in lee county, there was a tornado warning, it was a water spout that came in from the gulf of mexico onshore, just south of the venice area.
12:07 pm
point, that opposed to a tornado it was a strong straight line wind based on the fact that thing was off to one side. again, the national weather service will go and make that confirmation for us. what we do know now is that it's nice and dry. it will remain breezy through the evening. not strong gusty wind, just a breeze from the west. so looks like whatever has happened is at least gone for now. >> that is the good news. all right. thank you very much leigh. we want to go back to paul in eagle 8 hd over the scene because this is something really to see, paul. do you have anymore information? >> reporter: i don't really have more information. but it really is visual. you can see, if i push in close here, you can see how this piece of aluminum, the roof was connected to the front facade of the building when the wind came through, you can see how the directions of the wind. you can see it must have come
12:08 pm
of the screen which is the west. and blew over here to the right because that's where the debris is now on top of the cars in the back and you can see how it was pushed back off to the side. and this is the only damage we've seen around in this specific area. we flew from tampa down and we didn't see any other damage when we came up on this right on u.s. 41. the damage was clear. you could see this. it really stands out. if i pull back out, you can see how much damage there actually is. and right now, it looks more superficial and really visual but these cars behind it, they're the ones that are going to get some nice scratches and stuff if the metal that fell on to the cars and it's still up into the power lines. and the power trucks are still back here. they're still trying to figure out what to do. the emergency crews are on the scene and they have it taped off so people can't get in. and people are evacuated right out here to the front. just trying to figure out what's happening. because when you're inside this building when an event like this happen, it has to be a
12:09 pm
surprise because when this aluminum comes flying off the building and has to -- build, it has to make a loud crash. so is i'm sure the people inside were startled. rite now we're in a wait and see because they have to clean it up and they have to try to get into the cars to make sure there's nothing in the cars or any people. but right now, they don't think there's any injuries at the scene. >> yeah, the good news, it's really the aluminum roof that is the biggest casualty along with the cars. we heard from david who works at evolve insurance in that plaza, the arc plaza at 1000 tamiami trail in sarasota county near venice. again, we don't think anyone was injured. that's the key point. you can see there, fire personnel going in just to make sure, see if there's other people around in those cars, like you said. this happened a little more than an hour ago. and leigh spann is joining me now again here instudio. and you actually think that this was straight line winds.
12:10 pm
everywhere. >> exactly. you can hear even paul who is on top of that say, you could almost see the direction that the wind is because it came if the west, toward the east which is exactly what was happening. we were seeing the strong line of storms. i've been tracking them since about 1:00 this morning. so it was all moving from west to east. and embedded in that, we were concerned that you would get individual cells that may become tornadic. we never saw that in our area. at least not on our equipment. what we did see and track around fort myers area and lee that this happened. so there's a good chance that it was a stronger part of that been tracking. but again, we never saw any indication on the equip. that we have of any twisting of the winds and when i look at this video, i see all of the debris moving in one direction which would indicate to me
12:11 pm
straight line winds. what happens is, the national weather service goes out and does what they call a survey once the event is over and the threat has passed and they'll make the final determination but that would be my opinion. >> right. and can the good news like you said, that's moved through. this is past. this is behind us. are looking at other areas facing this severe weather still? >> no, technically portions of highlands and desoto are still under a tornado watch. i think that will expire very, very soon due to the fact that the threat the basically gone. now it's pushing to the east coast and farther south but as far as the communities that can see us, our threat is lessening and i did talk with the national weather service just we started this break-in. and they said they have gotten no other reports of damage in any other part of our viewing area. >> you know, i think this is
12:12 pm
and even if it's not a tornado, you can get these microbusts and straight line winds that >> right. we don't want people to think that only damage comes from tornadoes because a lot of times, a straight line wind event can be a long, tex ended event so you could see more damage in some cases so it's just verbiage that's different, winds. obviously the damage can be some cases. those poor cars and the owners of the cars will attest to that. but you know, we talked about this system. we have been warning people every day about this was a potential to happen friday morning, we let people know. we talked about it. and unfortunately, we did get some damage from this system. and strong winds really can pack quite a punch as you can see. >> well, and you know, i think it's interesting, are we looking at more weather like this the throughout the weekend? or is this it? >> well, it is over for
12:13 pm
basically for today. so you will get your friday afternoon and evening nice and dry. saturday nice and dry. unfortunately another system that's vaguely familiar to this system or vaguely similar will come through sunday morning and we may see another round of showers and thunderstorms and possibly even strong thunderstorms. this is what is indicated of a el nio winter. we get a lot of storms that roll in off the gulf of mexico, very, very quickly. and they come with frequency. so we've had one today. we will have one on sunday. and we will see several more throughout the rest of january, through especially february and even into march before el nio starts to weaken up a little bit. >> you know, again, we want to recap this. this happened at 11:00 this morning in venice. in leigh's opinion, we think it's a straight line wind incident, not a tornado incident. you can see the roof torn off this strip mall which is called arc plaza.
12:14 pm
it's at 1000 tamiami trail. and we are looking at a lot of car insurance claims and a roof claim out of this. but there do not appear to be any injuries. there's a pet grooming business in the strip mall called mutt hut grooming saloon and all the animals appear to be fine too. if you're just joining us, you are looking at a trip mall that's a victim of the weather today. we have eagle 8 hd providing these great pictures because really what you can see from above, that is the key damage. paul. he is up in eagle 8 hd, our chief photo journal lists here. paul, tell us some more. >> reporter: you can see where
12:15 pm
threw it to the east side of line. if you look at the sides of the aluminum, you can see how it's motion. some of the metal is bent but it is all blown off, straight across and it's laying in the ground right behind it. and what we have seen is the power crews have been moving around and getting in here. we have seen fire crews actually underneath the aluminum looking into the cars. and right now, they don't seem to be doing too much other than observing to try to figure out what's going on. you can see the fire crews back here and emergency vehicles. they have the scene taped off. and if i move back to the front of the street, this is where they evacuated the people. these people were in it. earlier i saw a couple dogs out here and there's one of the dogs. there's a couple. those came from the mutt hut. they were out here. so we are in the arc plaza. and it's a fairly big strip mall.
12:16 pm
there's a lot of businesses in here and a lot of people inside when it happened. these firefighters just came out of inside of the building. so what they're doing more than likely is inside checking the structure to make sure the integrity of the building is still intact because it's a big building with a lot of businesses and they have to make sure it's safe before they can allow people back in. right now, everyone is out of the building and they're in a wait and see kind of mode, trying to figure out what's going on, how safe it and is if the electric is off and to make sure there's no further damage because of, say a power line or a building collapse. but right now, from what we can tell up here, the building looks like it's in good shape. it's just the structure of the roof was torn off and moved to the side. so right now, they're still trying to assess the situation. it's still a very active scene. and if i pull out wide, tamiami trail, they do have one lane of traffic in the northbound lane closed and they're closing it
12:17 pm
on and off as emergency vehicles come and go. so if you're down here in the venice area, you're going to get some traffic in this immediate area. but other than that, the roads are moving fairly fine. >> all right. that's paul, live up in eagle 8 hd. and we are going to continue to follow this. we have a crew on the way to the scene on the, and on the ground as well. and we will bring you the latest when we have more information. again, we do not believe there to be injuries at this point which is lucky considering what you saw there and the picture. this again happened at the arc plaza at 1000 tamiami trail. we will continue to follow iting for. right now, we going bah back to our regularly scheduled programming. and so okay.
12:18 pm
>> and so you come over here, and you are will put them in florette s florettes, and you put them a bag, and small amounts over time. and another option is frozen vegetable, and frozen and fresh are not as good, but stock up on them, only because they never go bad, and krou will be able to use them when you need them. >> and you talked about wrapping the pizza, and why that is important. >> you want some leftovers, and you can't leave them out, because they dry out, and smelly, and so take something like pizza. >> wax paper? >> yeah, that is wax paper, and you can put it in a zippy and wrap it up and stick it back in, and it won't stay good, and your fridge will smell otherwise. >> and what about chinese boxes? >> if it is whole grain or something like that, put it in a bag and put it in the fridge. >> in the sflij. >> yes, because at the room temperature, it can spoil quickly, and the whole grain can get full of bugs quickly. >> they are attracted to that
12:19 pm
>> and tomatoes are in the fridge? >> no, they come out of the fridge. >> exact ri. >> and the best thing to do to avoid the odors is to -- >> arm and hammer. >> and yes, you have to open up the box. >> all of the way with and not just a little, but all of the way. >> yes, and that will keep it fresh. >> thank you, madelyn. all right. now to find out exactly what you should keep and toss from your fridge, go to the klgandhoda.com. and madelyn wants to tackle your pantry, so if you live in new york city area, and you would like madelyn to come to your home and embarrass you, post your picture to the facebook page.
