number four, three powerball tickets worth a half billion dollars each. good afternoon, i'm stacie schaible. thank you for joining us. this is the art plaza on tamiami trail. julie phillips is tracking the weather and we're going to begin with taking a look at the damage tonight. >> reporter: good evening. first of all, take a look at what mother nature did this morning. high winds ripped all this aluminum tin off the art plaza on tamiami trail in venice. they are cleaning up here but thankfully no one here was injured. an aluminum roof shredded,

11:00 this morning. remnants landed on employees' vehicles parked around back. yummy's donuts and barbecue was waiting on customers when it hit. >> straightline wind come through, lost our power and heard a big boom. looked out the back door and the roof was completely off the building. >> reporter: the strip mall also houses a dog grooming business and after the roof was blown off here, owners of about 20 dogs showed up in a panic to check their dogs and remove them. they did and that took a while during all the confusion. extensively. building, steve? >> reporter: well, according to county inspectors, other than the aluminum roof and cars that were damaged out back when the roof came off, the building is

in pretty good shape. there's actually a gravel roof that was under that aluminum cap so exposure to the elements should be minimal. >> thank you. also in venice today, this video from eagle 8 hd showing a tree on the roof of a house on marlin road. the tree damaged a roof and window but no one was injured. julie phipps is continuing our team coverage with the latest. >> that's right, some pretty bad weather earlier today. the good news is it's all moved south now. it could have been worse. thankfully no injuries in the damaged spots. but heavy damage far south of miami and moving away from us. that was not the case about six hours ago. let's put the radar in motion. this is a loop over the last six hours. you can see the strong showers

and storms moved on shore and raced east at about 45 miles an hour. so as it raced off toward the east, you can see now we are actually looking at a bit of sunshine around here. no more threat for the rest of tonight for us. it's looking fairly quiet. before the storms left, we saw decent rainfall totals. you can see 2 inches in places like highlands county and sarasota county. as you head farther north, there's rainfall totals, a lot of them less than an inch. and thankfully we didn't see too much in the way of severe weather. we had a couple of damage reports but no reported tornadoes in our area. not the case as you head south, some reported south of the tampa bay viewing area. one of those tornadoes was reported near the cape coral area. again, that's where the tornado hit last week. the national weather service is out surveying that damage to see if in fact it was a tornado.

we'll have more on that later. for now the rain has moved out and we have breezy winds about 10 to 15 miles an hour. we are seeing gusts at over 25 miles an hour, so it's gusty and not related to storms. we are not expecting any more storms tonight. temperatures in the mid-60s at 7:00 p.m., still a few clouds around but no rain expected. into the overnight hours, easy with no worries, temperatures dropping into the lower 60s as we head into tomorrow morning. lots of sunshine to start the day, mostly sunny skies. enjoy your saturday because we are looking at a second round of storms heading our way as we head into sunday. this was round one and we are looking at more strong storms as we head into late saturday night and sunday morning. >> thanks, julie. to see more pictures of the

between newscasts, we have updated information at wfla.com. our other big story of the day, dirk cutter, the new head coach of the tampa bay buccaneers was introduced today. paul ryan is live at one buc place with all the details. >> reporter: huge day here and there's been a bit of appall over the organization since lovie smith was let go last week. a lot of concerns were soothed today with the hiring of head coach dirk cutter. the general manager made it official just after 2:00 this afternoon, welcoming the 11th head coach in buccaneers franchise history. cutter was emotional today, a lot of family members on hand to see this historic moment. he thanked his family and every player and coach he's worked with in his 34-year journey. then he addressed the buccaneer fan base, assuring them he's the man for the job.

still no word today from the $1.5 billion powerball jackpot winner in melbourne, florida. the person bought the ticket at this publix store, one of only three winners each worth $558 million. a tennessee at any point couple claiming to have another winning ticket appeared on the today show for an exclusive interview. that was before the lottery official named them winners. john and lisa robinson jumped

the gun a little. work. she called me and said, are you lottery tickets? i really didn't feel like stopping that night but i was like, yeah, i'll stop and get them. came home, wasn't feeling good. gave the tickets to her, said i'm going to lay down. >> looked again, they're the same. looked again. third time, i went running down these numbers. >> she said check these numbers. i said okay. i looked at them and said, they look like they're the numbers. i checked them actually four times and said, well, i'll believe it when the news comes on in the morning and they say there's a winner in mumford. >> amazing. they appeared on the today show with their daughter and their lawyer. getting tough on crooks with gasoline skimmers in florida, coming up next.

we have been telling you about the problem of skimming devices found at local gas stations. they are small and can be hidden right inside the pumps, making them hard to find. they steal the information from the card you use to pay for your gas. the website gasbuddy.com is asking the secret service to investigate because credit card fraud is involved and the problem is happening most often

>> most instances have occurred in orlando and tampa. they have been elsewhere throughout the state but last year that's where the greatest concentration occurred. >> consumers have an obligation to report the fraud to local law enforcement so they can look for patterns and hopefully catch those responsible. a proposed law providing $14 million to schools that adopt a uniform policy is on its way to the governor. now some are questioning the lack of control on how the cash will be used. the $10 the legislature is providing the district for the uniforms doesn't go to the student. it goes to the district. this year 8 school districts took advantage of the first ever school uniform policy that gives $10 to the district for every student enrolled.

next are upping it from $4 million to $14 million. >> i believe in a grass roots approach where parents and students and teachers come together and decide what kind of uniforms they want to use. >> reporter: and for the first the money. >> we have a lot of educational needs in florida. $14million could be used for something in my opinion more important than uniforms. >> last year's cash was a one- time appropriation and many districts declined to take it because the program was not honest. joining us for another look at the weather, julie is here. it was a wild ride earlier today with the storms and some microbursts causing the damage down in venice. it cleared up and made for a beautiful afternoon. >> yes, and we had reports of damage but it could have been worse. thankfully the damage was sparse in our area.

the rain, not so much, common this morning. slowed down the morning commute, rain coming down in south tampa. you can see some standing water on the side of the road there. some places did pick up over 2 inches of rain earlier today. like we just mentioned, all the rain has moved out and we are looking at quiet conditions for the rest of tonight. at 9:00 p.m., mostly clear skies, temperatures mild for your night in the mid-60s. as you wake up tomorrow morning, mild again. starting off saturday in the low 60s, really going to be a nice day. temperatures topping out in the mid-70s by tomorrow afternoon, warmer afternoon and a mostly dry afternoon. we are keeping slim rain chances in the forecast for your saturday. the first front that rolled through, all the showers and storms are south of this system. but behind it, we are not looking at the strong north winds bringing us the cooler air. we are looking at breezy west winds. that's why temperatures aren't necessarily dropping back behind the first front.

will be bringing us cooler weather. this is bringing us drier air here and that's heading our way pretty much just for saturday, where we start to see more changes. enjoy tonight, it's going to be quiet. through the overnight hours, areas of fog will develop, especially as you head inland. saturday morning if you're up early, it will be a foggy morning, heads up there, partly cloudy through the day and 10% chance of a passing shower. most of us will be staying dry but the changes come as we head into sunday. starting very early sunday morning through the overnight hours, we'll start to see showers move on shore and showers and storms pass through the day early sunday. by the late morning hours this is out of the tampa bay area and we have partly cloudy skies for the rest of your sunday afternoon. slim rain chances saturday, get round two sunday morning, late saturday night. then dry weather is back next

us and we have pretty quiet conditions for tonight, just breezy. west winds 10 to 15 miles an hour, some gusts 20 to 25. as we head through the late evening hours, winds are going to fall back. right now temperatures back in the 70s for a lot of us, feeling nice outside some sunshine. 73 in tampa, 74 in ruskin and wimauma and 70 in crystal river. cooler air off to our west and this will make it to us but through the overnight hours the only worry is some fog developing. temperatures will stay mild and as the winds ease up, this will allow fog to develop, especially seeing dense fog in the inland spots tomorrow morning. many of you don't have work but if you're out and about, expect some of that. heading into the afternoon hours, partly cloudy skies and slim rain chances, just a

their own mother stopped producing milk. they are expected to become independent in the next few weeks and start eating eucalyptus. a rhode island boy with terminal cancer has fulfilled his wish to be famous in china. he is dying of rare pediatric cancer. the 8-year-old told his father that what he really wants before he goes to heaven is to be famous in china. his father posted the wish on facebook asking people in china and elsewhere to send a picture of dorian with a sign saying "be strong." the wish spread across the globe, prompting thousands of responses. and it especially struck a chord in china where it became a trending topic on china's 21st-like microblog service. much more news coming your
