8:00 am
>> paul joining us now from siesta key. a lot of the residents out there now just seeing the damage. some of them, perhaps their specific unit wasn't affected and now that the sun is up. they're discovering that the neighbors are okay and coming across all of this, surprised some of them, really. >> very surprising. they're knocking on the neighbors doors. the fire department is doing the same thing and they only have so many people. there are so many units in the condos and there. >> and elderly residents in the area so if you can call the cell phone numbers and make sure they're okay. >> check on your neighbors today and we want to go and check in on the weather now with mark collins. the storms are out of the area. but you know, what can you tell us about what has been going on? >> it is all clean up now. the weather will be breezy, the rain has moved on. that will help with the clean up efforts but looking at all of tampa bay native. it is impressive.
8:01 am
we've had a handcuff of ef-three tornados in the area -- a handful of ef-three tornados in the area probably at least that, if not, a four. the storms moved out quickly. reason being. you can see the plume of clouds here stepping all the way down into mexico. this is the very strong upper level wind driving all of the rain quickly towards the east. you can kind of make out the dark gray sinking south. now, that is the cold air. the cold air that will be funneling in. for the rest of the afternoon, what we're going to be talking about is high winds, winds gusting to 30 miles an hour along the coastal spots. there are gale warnings in effect. winds up to 40 miles an hour and these winds will channel down the cold. the cold has not yet reached much of us because of the westerly flow. but as the winds turn around, we'll see the temperatures drop here as we head through the later afternoon and tonight we'll get into the mid-40's. so for the rest of the day, we'll see the clouds become more
8:02 am
the morning wears on and by the afternoon, some clearing. topping out primarily in the mid-60's here during the course of the afternoon and walking you through the next seven days. here is the cool down. on tuesday. at least the parades look good for tomorrow. and no real complications in the next front on thursday. should not pack the type of damaging weather that we're guys? >> all right. mark collins and the entire informed. hoping to keep us safe through the night and into the morning. we want to take you out live with more pictures from siesta key. paul lamiston. we're getting a clearer picture of all of the damage. >> there is a lot of damage. he is even knocking on doors here, seeing if people are okay, talking with people in the area.
8:03 am
. 8:05 on this sunday morning. we continue to follow breaking news. lots of severe weather in your area overnight. >> we're looking at pictures in siesta key. two different areas right now. you can see where the roof has been taken off. not only of condos but this is a house that has collapse there was a woman sitting in her
8:04 am
also a dog rescued from the house this morning just an incredible scene. a horrible scene. a devastating morning. >> and even more damage out in manatee county and the community. the rural community of duette where we have learned there have been two fatalities. we'll have more on that in a bit. we want to take you back to siesta key. paul lamion is there. you've been getting a great perspective. what can you show us now? >> hey, gene, good morning, what i'm doing, i'm walking so bear with me. i'm going up to the 5th floor and is this where the whole roof is gone. let me see if i can knock on -- >> we lost paul there but he has been showing us the closest images i've seen from this. we have paul again. did you make it up there?
8:05 am
and i'm going to get down to an area where i can show you, pulling on cables, take a look at this up here. >> he is walking very carefully but look at that. >> i'm just about to the edge. here is what has happened. ground. when this came through, they said it came through so fast, and there was a woman who didn't hear the warning and had to be cut out, the door had to be chopped down, fire crews had to go in to get her. sorry if i'm a little winded. hang on. hello? hello? anybody here? and take a look at this. look at this room and look up. >> oh, my goodness. >> you're looking into clear blue sky right into here and this that is the bed. so the ceiling collapsed down onto the bed.
8:06 am
look at this. all of the ceiling is gone up here in this condo. let me move back out. i've been trying to talk to people as i go. the railing is down. it really can't go any further. >> be careful. we don't want you to get hurt. as we're looking at the images it is important to point out that the residents, i know you were calling for them. maybe they stepped out. trying to get out of there but not because officials got them out of there. from what we heard. emergency personnel has not made it out to the building yet. is that correct? >> no. the people here told me i'm in a different building here across the street. they said that people were going. they didn't say if emergency crews. people came and got people out and evacuated the building as it was coming through and said it was really, really loud. and really, really violent but really, really fast. and they said then they got more
8:07 am
they said it was only half of a minute where it was super bad and if i'm walking you can see, there used to be an awning and covered sidewalk. it has blown off this way into the parking lot. and you can see people are now coming out to see and take pictures and take a look at what is going on out here. it is a really bad scene out here an the damage is widespread. i've been on both sides of the street, probably walked a good mile and a half just back and forth and there is damage every single place i go. everywhere i look there is more damage. right now i'm walking, looking for people. >> as you continue to show us here, the broken railings, good it is a good reminder if you have small children and they're curious by nature it is not best for them to be outside right now. they can easily slip, fall through one of these railings. >> even adults, really, you try
8:08 am
a rush to get out of there, lean or support yourself on the staircases on the railings and they give way. treat everything as if it is extremely fragile aisle. you don't know the condition that these structures are in. i'm careful to walk through different areas but there are a lot of tree branches down, a lot of trees and people are out. now starting to take a look at what is happening. so that is where the danger comes in. a lot of these people have never been in situations like this before. so it is kind of a dangerous situation so if you're at home. you probably should stay inside or at least out of the area so you're not sight seeing. >> paul giving us a look at the damage here. we'll check back with you as you continue to explore safely. we want to get the latest on the weather. it is now drying out which we'll need for the clean up efforts. >> that's right. and we will go to leigh spann in the weather center.
8:09 am
is what it looks like now live along st. pete beach in pinellas county with the waves crashing very far up on the shore. we have a high surf advisory in effect. behind the system, the strong storm system, very gusty winds coming out, right off of the gulf of mexico. that is what we're seeing now and that is helping to clear out the storms. this is a look back just during the worst of the storm from about 2:00 in the morning until just after five. that saul it took for the entire system -- that is all it took for the entire system to go across the entire what we tracked during the time that paul was saying it was a half minute to a minute. we had the first tornado come on shore right around 3:05 right in the siesta key area. that was the hardest hit. that was also the first hit this morning at just after 3:00. the tornado tracked through sarasota county meaning usually in florida, we had the tornados
8:10 am
they go right back up. they might hit one house, we had this morning, something very rare which was what we call a long track tornado. it stayed on the ground. something like more like what you see across the central plains, it stayed on the ground. we look at the velocity. just like this. it shows that the rotation, this one cell stayed together and the tornado held together through sarasota county overstate r 64 heading upstate road 62 in manatee county around the duette area and it is unfortunate that is where we now have confirmed two fatallies but it was the exact same cell. the exact same tornado. we at storm team 8 tracked off shore about 30 miles so not only did it hold together off shore for 30 miles. once it came on shore in siesta key it made its way up here to duette and did cause the dissipating. dissipating. we started tracking another
8:11 am
the cell right here, about 65 miles an hour. so now it came on shore through, once again, the sarasota area. thankfully just a little bit further south in siesta key but we had the two different kinds of tornados that came on shore. we tracked this rotation into desoto as we head into 4:00 this morning. it was very treacherous, we were on the air hoping to keep people safe. we with -- see people on social media saying they were watching, helping to keep them safe. at this moment, the two different reported tornado damages, we get these storm reports from the national weather service, we have this one down in the siesta key area and that is where the reports have come in multiple and you can see why, we have multiple reports, we see it now. we also have this one near the duette area and we have the fatalities unfortunately. what we know now as we head through the rest of the day is things will clear out. we have lingering clouds.
8:12 am
winds, the cooler weather and the cooler air for the rest of the week with the next rain wednesday. >> that is something we really thank you. unfortunately as we mention mentioned before, there have been two people that passed away who died in the tornado in duette. >> it is in manatee county. >> it is in manatee county. several others are in the hospital this morning. we'll take a live look over the scene there. this is eagle eight and you can see what used to be a trailer and we have jim hockett on the ground there. what we're seeing right now is what you have described before. the trailer that is across the road. tell me what do you know, what happened? >> actually you know what, real quick, we have daniel here with the national weather service. he will update us from his point of view. we'll listen in on that real quick. >> families lost loved ones here
8:13 am
looking at the damage, an ef-two tornado with winds up to 125 miles an hour. we're in an el nino winter and spring. we'll have more storms like this through april. now is a good time for people to figure out where is their tornado shelter if they have to seek shelter from the storm. >> all right. we're getting a little bit of feed back there. jim, can you tell us more about what -- >> this morning from sarasota, we watched it from across manatee county and detected a debris ball as it was being lofted into the air we knew where to come for this area.
8:14 am
[ indiscernible ] there are other storms out to the west. that is when [ indiscernible ]. >> we're having a little bit of trouble hearing him but as he is mentioning, they're saying it is an ef-two tornado with wind 125 miles an hour and he mentioned because of el nino. we'll see more storms through april and he was giving indications on what to do when you get the warnings. you want to get out of structures like this. get into something that can withstand the winds like this and unfortunately around here. as you mentioned earlier, we don't have basements like they have in the midwest for example where i grew up. if you can get yourself into a structure, a closet, a bathroom. no windows, absolutely, that is something you want to start planning for after seeing something like this.
8:15 am
the person with the weather service. unlike other weather events, you get very little heads up when a tornado is coming to your area to be prepared. but we have been because of this el nino, we've been warning the viewers as early as late december that we could be seeing this. we could be seeing this through april. jim was able to talk to somebody out there earlier. let's listen into that. . >> a still picture here. this is from the scene. the sun is coming up. so this is the scene from earlier, again, that is a picture of what what used to be a trailer, three adults home, four children inside that trailer at the time when it came through around 3:45 in the morning. we were told that one adult died in the house. another adult died on the way to the hospital. an adult female and male and then another adult and four
8:16 am
one of those children has serious injuries this mortgage and you know -- morning. and you know, there is a lot of damage in the siesta key area. >> one home completely destroyed. mary mcguire has been bringing us live picture. we want to check back with her now.? >> good morning to you, i'm here off of siesta key. where the roof collapsed on a woman this morning. she was rescued by emergency personnel. they had to use emergency crews to lift that off of her. they're coming into the area to assess the damage. i'm joined here by cyndi shannon. she lives one door. >> -- one door down. >> i heard the beep, the tweet go off and was still kind of half sleeping. my husband was outside getting his windows up that were down. it was getting pretty intense.
8:17 am
it was maybe about three minutes from the time we got the notice until he heard that roof being ripped and he grabbed me and my daughter and we went to a safe spot in the house and it happened fast. >> very fast. from the tthree minutes. from the sound, it was a short burst. it was pulling and sound and noise and we were scared. and then we came out with a flashlight that the house is gone. the house is gone. it was scary. >> now that we see kind of the damage left behind in this sunlight. i would like to take it over here and explain what happened to the car's headlight. you came back. >> this piece of wood is jammed
8:18 am
if this was your leg your body. that would be a major injury. it has been surprising. it is shocking. a piece of wood just lodged inside his headlight. >> we discovered it when we came back. >> talk to us about this tree in front of your yard. >> i think this is what protected the car. it was here in the ground. it was uprooted it pulled the cement up here. >> completely lifted it. this was flat. >> this was flat. this was lifted from the roots getting yanked out. >> oh, my goodness. >> where did you go from here? here? >> we knew the couple. it sounds like she will be in the hospital. she may have a fractured hip. i don't know how long it will be for power. they may keep power off of this street not knowing what is happening with this house. i don't know how it is going to work. we'll probably stay somewhere else until we figure out, when
8:19 am
bad the roof is. >> you have to make sure your home is still structurally safe to stay in. >> exactly. we have to get that figured out today. there is a big mess to clean up and a lot to document. >> thank goodness out of all of this. no one was hurt. that is all we're thankful for. at the end of the day. i hope that is what everyone takes with them. hug everyone you love. tell them you love them. i told my mom to tell them at 3:30 in the morning. >> i'm sorry. i know this has been so emotional for you. and just to see the devastation occurred in this neighborhood. we're talking about material things here. but these are people's homes and their lives that have been literally uprooted this morning. a lot of clean up efforts left here near siesta key. >> we were supposed to go out of the country this week. that house, now, i don't think either of us are taking the trip. i don't know. >> it is a lot of -- >> we are alive. and it makes you realize every day, just be thankful.
8:20 am
because of the storms, a few people didn't that we know of so far. >> thank you so much. back to you guys. >> mary mcguire reporting live in siesta key and of course, she mentioned she is not sure what to do next and weather they would have power -- whether they would have power. the t red cross and salvation awly is on the way to the damage. >> we have a live picture of the clean up starting right now in siesta county. there you have it starting to get the trees debris out of the way. it goes on and on throughout the day. we'll keep you up to date on everything.
8:21 am
. we're back now at 8:25. hello and good sunday morning to you. we've been following big breaking news on severe weather in our area in manatee county and sarasota county. >> we'll go to sarasota county in siesta key where paul lamison is. it looks like clean up is under way. >> yes, lindsey, clean up is under way. what they're doing is xg in with a front end loner making sure the roadway is clear -- front end loader making sure the roadway is clear. what they're doing is cleaning this area up so they can get
8:22 am
if i pan back over here, this is ocean drive and the police are out here, the sheriff in full force keeping people away because earlier, these were the apartments or the condos i was in. if i zoom up here, i was in the condo and so what they're doing now is the clean up is starting to begin. i've seen red cross out here and fire crews. they're going door-to-door checking on everybody to make sure everybody is okay. the sheriff is out here, they're keeping control of the area, more and more people are starting to come out and that is starting to become a problem. it is hard to clear when you have so many cars. the sheriff is going and making sure people stay as well and people are coming through to check out the damage and you can see the fence is pushed over by the storm and if i come back over here, the roofs in a couple of these condos were taken off and i'll come back in and show you what they're doing over here
8:23 am
this front end loader, they're grabbing the trees falling from the wind, grabbing them, and them out. just so they can get other crews in here so they can start restoring the power and making sure everybody is okay. i know it is hard to hear me because of the loud noise but that is what they're doing, they're working here. so i'll send it back to you. it is a mess out here. an active scene, and they're really just trying to assess the damage at this point. back to you. reporting. i did get a tweet from a viewer that said some of the property owners don't live on siesta key assess the damage. maybe you might want to give the clean up crews and emergency responders time to get everything under wraps before you go out and assess your own property. >> and another devastating scene is in duette and manatee county where two people lost their
8:24 am
we have steve andrews out there on the scene. we'll go over to steve now. what can you tell us this morning? >> hey, lindsey, i just lost you, but i'm on the air here. what we know is that we can confirm, as you said, that two people were killed in the tornado earlier today. apparently a father and four children had gone to visit some grandparents here on albritton road in duette. we're in the north east part of manatee county. the tornado hit, according to the sheriff's office around 4:00 a.m. this morning and two adults were killed in that tornado. apparently one died -- >> okay. we'll check --
8:25 am
hospital as well with me now is noah of the national weather service. thank you for being with us. tell us about the strength of the tornado, what you know about it, where it hit, what. >> the tornado started about -- >> all right. we've been listening it to steve andrews and has been trying to talk to officials but as you can imagine, we're having some difficulties. there is a lot going on. power down in some areas. communications issues with some of the crews because of all of the devastation but what you're looking at here is a live picture from eagle eight of what was once the mobile home of a family out in duette, a small rural neighborhood in manatee county. we're learning that a family, including several children, were there spending the night. visiting grandma and grandpa when all of a sudden the storm ripped right through the home. the latest information that we have as far as this family, two
8:26 am
we're not sure if those are the grandparents or the parents. we're working to confirm that. one male and one female dead. one died inside the mobile home. the other died on the way to the hospital. and then we also know that the children and the other adults involved are receiving medical attention this morning. because this is such a rural area. when we had jim hockett on the phone. somebody just happened upon this scene. these people didn't even have a chance to make it themselves and say we need help. >> if you see there how it is blocking the road. we're told that they had to use four wheelers to try to get around this area and check further down the road. just to see if anyone else was hurt down there and as they're zoomed out right now. actually see more. you can see the emergency crews on scene. you can see other streets down the road. so we're going to go back to
8:27 am
he has an interview with someone from the national weather service. steve, go ahead. . >> all right. once again we lost steve andrews. bear with us. we're trying to get all of the information from manatee and sarasota county and all of the areas affected by the severe storms. the tornados confirmed by the national weather service that affected the bay area over night. there are challenges in doing that with technology. we can bring you what we're bringing you right now which is the live pictures of eagle eight over this. the most devastating scene. the only fatal that we know of so far -- >> and they're confirming it is an ef-two tornado which brings winds of 125 miles an hour. leigh spann has been follow this all night long. she can tell us more about the scene. good mo. >> thank you very much. we have tracked all of the systems all morning long. the cell that's rolled in off of the gulf of mexico and we can
8:28 am
basically in it for much of the state of florida. we have a little bit of threat happening in miami. this was a system that has a lot to do with el nino. a strong jet stream. you can see the clouds here out of the bay out of mexico. screaming to the north east. and what happens is, when you have that fast wind way up in the sky, any storms that develop can really lift and really begin to twist and unfortunately, that is a sign of el nino and that is also the perfect ingredients for getting the tornadic type storms. now we've seen this system go away and behind it, winds will get much stronger through the day so not only will those winds move the debris around that you're seeing that fell off of all of the homes, but you're also going to get treacherous conditions on the water ways. there is a gale warning in effect until 1 o'clock for the off shore waters. there is a high surf advisory. again, the waves will be churned up.
8:29 am
advisory due to the fact that we're seeing higher than average tides and at high tide right now. inland areas, you have lake wind advisories that will be posted for the rest of the day as well. not only will the winds make it, again, gusty but also make it much cooler, too. temperatures will fall quickly through the evening hours as soon as the sunsets. we'll stay in the 60s through the day today but as soon as the sunsets, the temperatures fall quickly into the 40s and then we stay cool and thankfully dry through most of the week ahead. the next rain chance isn't until thursday. we will be back for more continues coverage on the tornados that struck parts of
8:30 am
. 8:36 on this sunday morning. welcome back. i'm gene ramirez. >> and i'm gayle guyardo. lindsey mastis is actually en
8:31 am
where there is destruction in manatee counties. hard to believe trns jumped on shore and ravaged the communities. >> people saying now that it looks like a war zone out there overnight. they say what they heard, it sounded like a freight train. paul lamison has been giving us a close look at this. we keep seeing scenes like this. what is this? >> this is, again, part of the roof and nobody is sure where it has come from. i'm joined by a resident. what was it like during the storm? >> very scary. very scary. this started, woke me clear out of bed at about, 13 after 3:00 a.m.. >> what did it sound like? >> like a train. now i understand, the roofs were being torn off but it was like a railroad train. >> now that you're looking out here at the damage, what does it look like?
8:32 am
first thing in 20 years. never had any claim or anything >> oh, my goodness. okay. also safe. >> we know that a dog was rescued from the home where the roof collapsed and they were okay as well. >> he was so scared. he was between the wall and the couch. >> sometimes animals can hear that weather before but certainly some extensive clean up efforts under way. they will be here for the days siesta key. back to you guy s. make sure the pets are safe as well. >> they're like family. >> yes, they are. >> we want to look at the scene from different per inspect aggressive eagle eight over the eagle eight. it will give you a good idea of how this is laid out. >> you hear people describe it like it is a train moving through or a bomb going off. and when you see the destruction it totally makes sense.
8:33 am
this is video right now that you're looking at from eagle eight. you can see roofs completely torn off and debris everywhere. >> and in that home that you just saw, there was a woman trapped under the roof. she was rescued as mary has been telling us by what we're describing as air bags but some sort of device that lifts the roof, the emergency personnel uses to take this person out and what is shocking here, gayle, and for us in florida that are not seeing this kind of tornadic activity and the disaster that follows is it all focuses on really narrow area. it is the one house. sure there, is a little bit of damage in the homes around it but the brunt went to the one house. >> all of the time we're talking about hurricanes but steve a small community here where this tornado took lives. . here in duette.
8:34 am
lost lives. a tornado hit here at about 4:00 a.m.. let me show you exactly where it hit. if he a look at the truck, over my right shoulder. a white truck. satellite. that is where the house was. after the tornado hit, let's show him, it went all the way across the street. the house was lifted and thrown across the street. two people were killed in this tornado. apparently a son had brought four children over to visit his grandparents for the night and apparently we're told that the grandparents were killed. the grandfather died on the scene and apparently the grandmother died on her way to the hospital. take a look at the force of this thing. the strength of this thing. it lifted this house and threw it across the road.
8:35 am
several trees and if you turn around. we have downed power lines, a downed power pole. we are waiting for a spokesperson from the national weather service hopefully he'll be here momentarily. again, repeating, two people dead here in duette. the identities have not yet been released. four children hospitalized. the father of those four children also hospitalized with serious injuries we are told. the father of these children their grandparents right now. there is county staff trying to sift through some of the rubble. neighbors have been out in the field picking up debris scattered around. this is the closest that they've wreckage. it looks like we're not going to get that spokesperson from the
8:36 am
yet so let's throw it back to >> all right. thank you. the new information of course, these grandparents are now, we're learning the victims of the destruction and devastation out in due and you're -- duette and you're looking live over this is duette. a small rural community in manatee county and gayle, what we understand is that somebody came across this scene, so these people didn't have a chance to reach for a phone and call 911 and say we need help. >> when you look at the destruction, you can understand how deadly this tornado truly was. again, we understand that the grandfather died during the storm and the grandmother en route to the hospital. the four children and the father are being hospitalized as we speak. >> and we just saw in the closer shot there, the officers there investigating now, looking through the rubble, looking for, i don't even know what to look for at this point. obviously what is important is
8:37 am
happens. grandma and grandpa are no longer with us and the family is hospitalized. >> it is interesting that you bring this up. this is a busy season for sarasota and manatee county. a lot more folks there. we'll continue to bring you live coverage throughout the morning here on news channel 8. you're waking up to a devastating day in sarasota and manatee counties.
8:38 am
.
8:39 am
8 where we continue live coverage of destruction in both sarasota county and manatee county. right now, you're looking at siesta key. a world famous beach community put on the map by dr. beach. much of it is destroyed this morning. you can see the debris there live. >> the clean up getting under way. paul is joining us live now. what can you tell us? >> hey, gene, i had an interesting conversation with the gentleman from new york. he came out here to check on his car. his car is the buick back here. it is safe. no scratches, no dents, no broken glass but just in front of him. check out this one. the windows gone, shattered, back seat, filled with glass. and if you look down the rows of cars here, there is most of them with broken glass so his car got lucky getting hit and as i walk, i'll walk over here and to add
8:40 am
storm blew through this area and as it did, all of this debris on the ground, much of it started blowing back again down this way, so even though the storm passed, they're getting rain, still getting downpours. >> paul i want to stopper a second, paul. background. fall? >> it is falling because there is debris still up on the roofs of the buildings. the debris is still down here and as the wind came through. pieces like this one here. let me show you, let me pick it up. >> some is so loose, you have to be careful out here. >> it is still loose and blowing and as the winds come it gets picked up and carried down through here. it is still dangerous here. an active scene. i saw good news, the red cross is on scene and they're going door-to-door to figure out who they can help.
8:41 am
is me walking through there. red cross is on scene. starting to tend to some of the victims and it is starting to rain again, if i come in here, here is what they're dealing with. parts of the roof in here collapsed. the ceiling and right on to cars. so there is a lot of damage, not just houses, not just trees but automobiles and quite a bit. so there is a lot of damage here and it will take awhile for the crews even to get in to start cleaning up because as you can see, there is damage everywhere you look. >> you can see it blowing there. >> you can see it in the roadway. >> leigh spann has been telling us -- >> i could spin -- >> leigh spann has been telling us that gale force warnings are in effect until 1 o'clock. high surf, coastal surf. it may seem calm right now. weather patterns in florida take twists an turns and with all of that debris it makes this it that much more sglangs it is and i've seen some blow by, some are coming off of the roof, dropping down. you can see, here is part of a
8:42 am
you can see on the roof. there is debris up here and when strong winds come through, that debris gets caught in the wind like a kite and just blows. it is still dangerous and there are still people out here. >> in case somebody is joining us now. we want to give them a better idea of where this is. this is ocean drive. i know there is part of ocean drive that curves off into midnight pass. is that that area there, correct? >> yes. i'm back here and actually in the ocean sands or the crystal sands condominium and that is where a lot of the damage is. the next door there is damage. across the street there is damage. damage almost everywhere i look in this immediate area. so it is not getting any better because crews have not been able to get at least back here to start clean up. >> we saw damage you saw us earlier as well where the railings had fallen off of those open walk ways, people might be rushing out of the homes to
