good evening i'm jennifer leigh. >> and i'm keith cate. thank you for joining us today. our live team coverage begins with paul lamison. he's live above the damage in sarisota county. we saw a lot yesterday, what do you see today. >> reporter: what you see today are all these vans that are up. they're here and they're going to try to figure out what is next. the roof is gone, ripped off, and everything in it either sucked up or collapsed under the roof. it's this whole building that was affected. there's one little section here that remained on. but over all this building is a loss with the roof. no roof on it and if i pan inside real close. you can see shelves and you can see how people were living in. but what they're doing now they have to get up into it and

repair this so the clean up is starting but it's doing to be a long process -- it's going to be a long process. >> two people were killed and five overs injured in a home in duet during the tornado. friends and family came to sift through that home, what's left of it. trying to save what ever is left for the rest of the family. >> reporter: it's hard to believe this was once a home. but if you look over there, you can see clothes and shoes and books and toys, the remnants of people's lives. it's little more than rubble now. but this is where steve and kelly wilson called home. steve wilson was killed as his home was blown apart. his wife kelly survived a tornado but died of a heart attack immediately after. four children and stephen m

>> it was probably a minute and it was over. >> reporter: mike schumer lives down the street. his wife got out of bed and went to the front door. >> she said there's a tornado warning. not a watch but a warning. she opened the front door and almost snatches the door out of her hands. and says this might be real here. >> reporter: in seconds, the reality was over their heads. >> i mean you hear the stories that people say it sounds like a train. it's like thunder off in the distance, here in florida you hear it all the time but it just kept coming. >> reporter: they went to an interior closet inside the home. >> man that's the most helpless feeling in the world. when you're hunkered down in the closet with you and your wife and you feel the house going to happen. >> reporter: outside his workshop was blown. mess now. >> reporter: we understand that

injured are doing better. they're out of the hospital. the two girls they're injuries are a little more substantial. they're being treated at a local hospital. >> and that was the best description of a tornado i've heard. thunder that just keeps coming toward you. >> down the road they did hear the weather alert as a matter of fact they were woken up by the weather alert coming over their phone. it might have saved their lives keith.

those in the mobile home industry recommend that people anchor their mobile homes to the ground. >> just make sure at least you're not in danger because you're not anchored correctly. >> and mobile home designs were improved in 1976 as well as 1994. firefighters can be seen carrying a woman. she was pulled out of a wreckage of a home. the victim nancy devito was taken to the hospital yesterday. she has since been released. and today the massive clean up effort begins in the tornado ravaged areas of sarasota. the storms caused millions of the dollars of damage. today contractors, restoration teams and good samaritans came out to help. john rogers continues our team coverage live in sarasota county. >> this gives you a good idea of the task ahead of these

this is rubble from this home that was corn up by the tornado. one of the big problems we have is exposed nails that we have everywhere. if you can believe, there's a car underneath this pile of rubble. despite what looks like a difficult task, officials are confident that they will bring life back to normal. >> this area was the living room. or what was the living room. >> reporter: on the fourth floor of this building there's look. >> you don't like to see like this. >> reporter: 40 workers are on- site doing clean up. they'll be here picking up debris. take months. >> this is a mayor operation. >> it is, it's always a major operation when you deal with the complexity and loss the size of this. >> reporter: more than 60

>> we have a lot of damage but we have a good insurance company. >> reporter: today relief agencies met with tornado victims to provide them with information on how to find the right contractors. so the county wants to make sure these tornado victims aren't swindled. >> reporter: these folks here have been working all day trying to clean up the rubble. as you can see they have a massive task ahead of them. this is great information that all of us can learn from about picking out the best contractors so they're not swindled. make sure you check their license. make sure they're reputable. also you can check their references. and you also, it would be best to have an attorney look over your contract before you finalize anything. be sure you take your time so you aren't swindled. back to you guys. >> john, who or where should these people call to find more information? >> obviously a lot of people

places to call is calling your county. call your local county. they have experts and resources available to help you find a reputable contractor and check his licenses and also again it wouldn't hurt to reach out to an attorney as well. somewhere -z thank -- thank you, john. and the weather service saw the ball start to form. i guess when it starts picking up the debris it starts to form. >> that houses the national weather service radar that tracked this storm from start to finish. as you're about to see for yourself, some of what it captured is quite remarkable. >> reporter: the national

three people but saturday night was anything but normal. >> we had five people that night. >> reporter: their radar tracked the first f2 tornado just as it crossed siesta key about 350-yard wide. it lasted about five minutes and tore up homes and condos in its path. then at 3:48 in the morning, a second f2 tornado cut a track across farm lands in the duet area of manatee county. that tornado lasted 13 minutes. >> that one was on the ground for about 9 miles. >> that's a long time. >> it is. >> reporter: that's the tornado that killed three people when it picked up their tornado then dropped it. >> it basically rips everything apart.

service office, they watched the debris start to be picked up. >> it's probably part of the trailer along with tree limbs, leaves, fiberglass whatever that tornado is able to pick up. >> reporter: the meteorologists here at the national weather service tell me it was kind of a blessing really that the tornado hit in a rural area. because traveling 9 miles the death toll and destruction could have been far worse than it was if it hit a populated area. >> 9 miles like tampa to st. pete on the ground there with the tornado. what about the future. are they expecting more storms like this, mark. >> reporter: unfortunately they are. we have this el nino effect which has the jet stream actually going right over our heads and until that goes away sometime around march and april, these thing starts going

today is dr. martin luther king jr. day. across the country people are honoring the civil rights leader. james comish sharing his deep concerns between present day division between law enforcement and minority communities. and in tampa today hundreds came out to the city's dr. martin luther king jr. parade. the parade stepped off at noon from 15th street and ended at 22nd street. this is held every year to celebrate the life and achievement of the civil rights

your cell phone might just be a lifesaver. >> the tornado surprised many in sarasota. >> part of the problem is, that these things hit shortly at 3:00 in the morning. but we have the technology, spotted it and sent the warning but if you don't receive them. they do you little good. 18 minutes that's how much of a heads up steven and katie wilson had before the tornado both are now dead. >> people need to receive the warning. >> reporter: according to dan noah, storm detention services aren't the same as in other states. >> you would have to have a

them to be effective here. >> noaa recommends the weather radios. >> it acts like a smoke detector for natural hazards. >> reporter: manatee county sheriff heard an alert like this from the iphone. >> my iphone and my wife's iphone went off with the notification there was something going on. we both got up and took a look at the iphone. >> reporter: then he turned on the television where steve jervi was tracking the system. >> we have a severe weather service, just looking at the storm track you're looking at right now. you see time of arrival for this 3:47. the current time is 3:02. if you're in siesta key or any of these areas you likely want the take cover because this is likely a tornado with very high winds. >> reporter: newschannel 8 offers a free app you can download to your phone to give you a heads up for the unexpected. >> if you don't receive the

>> reporter: that's right. i have to admit until this weekend i didn't have the news, the storm team app on my cell phone i do now. this is one way to receiver -- receive these warnings. these are a couple of weather radios. there we are. a couple of radios. this one is portable. you can take it with you when you're on the golf course or doing your shopping. it's really something that i it's really something that i have -- >> that white one has an antenna on it. you tune it in to a frequency in your area. also on the apps you can download our app and specify where you are. and it will alert you and it actually has my voice on it.

tornado watch. >> run for cover. >> exactly. >> i believe you have to have your phone on. >> if it's silent mode or something. >> you have to have it on. >> from now until april you can expect more of this ferocious weather. >> it puts us in a more likelihood to see more of these severe storms that produced tornadoes it could be a very dangerous time. we saw that in 1998. >> it's up to us. >> to protect yourself. >> and have a back up. have your app but have one of these as well. >> that's the take away. the best way to keep yourself informed during a storm. as terrifying as it is to have steve jerve yell into your

>> you want him screaming out of your phone. >> and steve has the app now. >> i can't believe you didn't have the app. come on. and these clouds are looking a little streaky and probably a few more than folks would like. the sun does help you warm up on a cool day. this has been a cool day. despite the clouds the temperatures will fall rather quickly. see the view at st. pete beach. 55degrees with a north wind. got some cloudiness and finally at hula bay. 57degrees. a little chilly and northwest wind at 14. got a freeze watch. this is really for tomorrow night into wednesday morning. the national weather service has issued this for sumpter county for citrus, hernando county. there will be a warning for these areas as temperatures will go below freezing.

chilly conditions in the mid- 50s through this period. just a few high clouds. you saw a few of them on the camera in a moment. 52degrees with some of those clouds in the forecast through the evening hours. 49degrees at 10:00 p.m. a bit chilly for us floridians. 45degrees at 3:00 a.m. and temps dropping to 42 degrees. sunshine mixed with clouds. over all cool weather throughout this period really. we'll warm up a little bit throughout the week with a bit 55 largo. 58degrees in apollo beach. these are the current numbers locally. sarasota 57, 58 degrees. and that will stay in place with high pressure anchored way up here. we have freeze watches and warnings. here we have clouds moving across the area. mostly high clouds. but enough of them to kind of

blue sky and sunshine. not rainmakers by any means but that does help to give us more of a cloudy condition at times. we see the streaky clouds in the rpm forecast. there are clear patches too for the early morning hours. winter jackets needed. maybe. many spots possibly in the 30s. especially northern areas. freeze watch and warnings for tomorrow night. temps will remain chilly with temperatures in the 50s through this period. then bundle up there for wednesday morning, coldest night yet. with the freeze watch and likely a freeze warning in place on that morning. and the afternoon, warms up nicely. hopefully got a lot of sunshine there in the afternoon at 2:20. a few clouds around. no precipitation through this period. going on beyond that period. high pressure will continue to shift and we'll get more of a southeasterly flow. low pressure approaches from the west.

of showers. 59degrees tuesday. 64 for wednesday. and certainly dry through this period, thursday with a high of 70 degrees. no rain there but there's your 50% shower and thunderstorm chance as we get into friday. it doesn't look as severe as the last but it does reminds us what we were saying about these storms lining up and coming in. we could see it a severe weather event. we'll keep an eye on these two. need less to say we're very skeptical. every one that comes our way we will monitor it. >> nice job. and a popular ice cream is making a come back. >> we'll tell you when you will

popular ice cream brand is making a come back. today blue bell products were delivered to kentucky, tennessee and the carolinas. it's expected to be restock in florida later this month. the prices of priority mail and priority mail express went up yesterday. priority mail increased 1.8%. the faster priority mail express jumped on average 14.4%. and the u.s. department of transportation has released its latest list of online performance. the airline ranking number one, hawaiian airlines rounding out the top five. delta, alaska airlines, united and american.
