let's get a look at the weather with brian bennett. check out the low temperatures we had this morning, 41 degrees in tampa. head north with less cloud cover and it was cold, 28 degrees in parts of citrus and hernando counties this morning. a bit more cloud cover i-4 and south kept temperatures from getting below freezing. we still have frost in a few locations. frost, florida snow for the locals because we don't get the real snow very often. right now 63 tampa and st. petersburg, mid- to upper 60s inland. we have a few clouds drifting across the area but no rain, so it will be a dry evening. just a few high thin clouds drifting through, temperatures this evening in the upper 50s.

night but not quite as cold, about 8 degrees warmer tonight than it was last night. partly cloudy. here are the forecast lows. we were in the 20s last night and we're in the upper 30s in citrus and her than doe, the rest of us in the upper 40s. coming up in the main forecast in a few minutes, we'll talk about some even warmer temperatures heading our direction and some showers and storms. i'll have all that in just a minute. back to you. an elderly man is recovering right now after walking away from an assisted facility. >> the 82-year-old spent some very cold hours outside. robert taylor left the regency oaks facility and he's been rushed to the hospital. >> to be honest, i don't know

>> reporter: today berry pled no contest to manslaughter and as part of the plea deal, she must testify against her husband, joseph walsh. detectives say walsh killed his 9-week-old son while berry stood by and the pair buried him in a nearby wooded area. he is charged with second- degree murder. driving under the influence could get more expensive. a isn't it true bill could make people twice about refusing a breathalyzer. >> reporter: refusing a breathalyzer could come with more fines and maybe a jail time under a new bill. drivers who refuse to take a breath test could face at least

>> i really believe that the solution is not so much in criminal penalties relating to refusing to take the breath test, but the solution should be requiring that the individual take a test to determine if they have an alcohol or drug dependency and try to solve that problem. >> reporter: right now a breath test comes with an automatic suspension of the license after a dui. >> a repeat offender could face a misdemeanor and be required to have a breathalyzer device installed in their car. making national news today, dramatically. as of midday, the dow was down more than 540 points. there was a plunge in the price of crude oil. chevron fell 7%, the most in

take over tampa bay for this year's gasparilla celebrations. >> and today tampa's police chief announced how law enforcement is preparing for all the crowds. >> reporter: today tampa leaders stepped up to announce their plans for gasparilla. tampa's police chief was joined by the hillsborough county superintendent as well as the fire chief and coast guard commander. they announced their plans to curb underage drinking at the event to keep parade goers safe after events like san bernardino and paris last year. >> as of today, my last meeting with all our federal partners, there's no significant threats to the city of tampa that would prevent this event from taking place. >> reporter: and patrons should leave drones at home, a

today two people in sarasota stepped up to help a family devastated by sunday's tornado. friends of steve and kitty wilson, who died after a mobile home hit their home, went to help recover and found this frame. they took it home, sanded it down and gave it back to the family. >> they were thankful that somebody did something like that, especially a stranger doesn't even know the family. i'm a friend of the friend of the neighbors.

displayed at the funeral for the family. nice gesture there. joining us now for another look at the first 4 weather, brian is with us today. >> we had a little frost this morning as well. i just returned from a trip to ohio and west virginia, and it was 5 degrees there. it was 50 here, i'm loving it. all relative, folks. even our cold spells aren't that bad. but this is a cool shot, a solar eruption caught by nasa's solar dynamics observatory. it happened in december and caused a cascade of magnetic solar arches. you can see the movement in the upper right to the movement. this was taken in extreme uv wavelengths, which is usually visible to our eyes, but it's

color, so kind of a cool shot from nasa. thanks for that. our sunshine right now, little black dot protecting our camera there. you can see the sun will be setting about 6:00 p.m. tonight, getting kind of chilly overnight. 66 in tampa right now. 67 in brooksville, 63 in st. petersburg, everybody kind of hovering in the 60s. tomorrow we'll be a little warmer, topping off at 71. 71 on friday, then 58 for saturday and just a tad warmer on sunday. back to 72 on tuesday, then we're down again. kind of classic january and february weather with the up and down temperatures. we have a few high thin clouds driftings through the skies but not producing any rain, so dry conditions flout the everything and nighttime hours.

the offshore high pressure giving us the east to southeast wind.fairly comfortable temperatures tomorrow in the 70s, then we have a low pressure system that's being born in colorado and parts of oklahoma. this will bring disruptive weather, especially to our friends north. friday kind of a rainy day here, maybe isolated showers or storms possibly becoming severe. we'll keep an eye on that. right now nothing like we had this past weekend. to our north, lots of snow, sleet, freezing rain, a big storm system for d.c. with possibly 1 to 2 feet of snow overnight 49 degrees, partly cloudy skies, not as chilly as it was last night. tomorrow afternoon partly cloudy, a dry day, 71 degrees. 71 and kind of rainy, maybe a

the fight the terrorist group in afghanistan. the pentagon says u.s. can now pursue isis in the war torn country. under previous rules, the military could only go after isis elements that posed a threat to u.s. forces. number three, scientists believe they have solid evidence of a true ninth planet on the fringes of our solar system. it's about ten times the mass of earth and 600 times farther away from the sun. they found this with computer modeling and hope to see it with a telescope within five years. number four, fighting over chocolate. courts in europe are telling nestli they cannot trademark the shape of the kit-kat. rivals wanted to produce a similar bar.

and researchers are worried mosquitoes could bring the virus to the southern most gulf states. what does it do and why are pregnant women at risk? let's clear up some of the mystery and why should we be so concerned about it? >> the illness essentially in most people cause a limited infection characterized by fevers, rash, joint and muscle pain and pink eye. in pregnant women, it's been associated with birth defects. that's why they're very concerned about pregnant women specifically. >> we have pictures about that talking about. what exactly does it mean? >> essentially the biggest birth defect they are finding

the development of the head and brain stops, and can lead to issues with walking, talking, mental disabilities. >> very severe. >> it's very severe. last year in 2014, brazil saw 147 cases of microcephaly. between october and january, there have been 3500 cases. so this prompted the cdc to make a warning to pregnant women, don't travel to these areas if you're pregnant or pregnant. alarming. outside traveling to those women locally? worry. there have been no cases of mosquitoes affected with the panic. this is for the people planning to travel or if they have develop illness.

welcome back now. most of us trying to stay healthy this year, but a new study says what you eat may be affecting how you sleep. registered dietitian abigail dougherty is with us. sleep can screw up a lot of things. we look at the new year, so let's break down how things can help you sleep better. >> i love the study because it broke down and told us things that we could actually do that

we could do in our normal lives. fiber, think fruits and vegetables, whole grains. that helps with so many different things with digestion, helps your skin feeling good. if you think about it, now it also helps with your sleep. and fruits and vegetables, they are all good. think quinoa, oatmeal, whole grains, whole wheat. if you want to switch from white breads, rice, pasta to the whole grains, it's a good move. if you can't do full, i tell clients do half and half. >> not a bad idea. >> small changes help too. >> how about sugar? that can make sleep worse? sleep worse. can do. decreasing your sugar will help with sleep.

coffee drinkings. try to manage them. if you drink them now, maybe try to drink one less per day. or try to go cold turkey. with the sodas, i definitely say go cold turkey. >> and hitting the ice cream before bed, probably not helping. how about alcohol, a lot of sugar in alcohol? >> yes, same thing with those. watch that. the other thing they found was saturated fats. so think butter, red meats, high fatty content red meats, and things that are solid at room temperature. that will be your saturated fat. simple swaps, if you like ribs or going for lean pork loin. turkey burgers instead of the ground chuck. try little things and think sleep, overall healthy lifestyle. >> moderation, too, and exercise. >> exercise helps a ton, yes. thank you very much. >> very good tips.

satellite and radar, showing a few high thin clouds drifting through the area but no rain. we are dry across the bay area and will be dry throughout the evening. we have high pressure offshore that's given us and east to southeast wind. what that will do is help bring us warmer temperatures as we head into the day tomorrow. now we're going to start watching this low pressure system right now in kansas and oklahoma, going to move through and bring us showers and storms on friday. what this storm will mainly be known for is the snow for our northern neighbors up through d.c., quite a bit of snow with that. as we head through friday and saturday, 6 inches to a foot of rain through parts of tennessee, kentucky and nashville going to see a fair amount of snow. heading north, more snow for

a lot of snow for d.c. it will shut down the nation's capitol friday and saturday with a lot of snow in the mid-atlantic states, not as much north of new york city and boston. storm. locally, tomorrow morning we're partly cloudy and 49 degrees, so about 8 degrees warmer tomorrow than we were this morning. tomorrow afternoon a few more clouds move in, still a dry day. little warmer, high of 71 degrees tomorrow. all in all, tomorrow not too bad of a day. moving into friday, that cold front will be moving through. scattered showers, maybe a storm, and we could see a strong or severe storm develop but not expecting anything like the outbreak we had a couple days ago with those two tornadoes. we'll keep an eye on any system rumbling through. moving into saturday, the storms are history. we get a northwest wind.
