>> a puppy napping caught on camera. that little dog has finally been found. >> and, as pirates prepare to invade tampa, police are focused on security. ahead of gasparilla. good evening. i'm keith cate. >> i'm stacie schaible. thanks for joining us. >> the mother of baby chance walsh has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. officials say kristin bury did not do anything to help save her nine week old son as her husband beat him to death. so today, she took a plea deal. report. >> reporter: today, bury's parents took the stand. she was visibly distraught and very emotional as they talked about how ashamed they were of their daughter. courtroom, she quickly hid her face from the cameras but minutes later her emotions were

testified. >> i will never get the chance to be a grandmother now. >> reporter: in september, officials say she watched as her husband beat and choked their nine month old son chance. bury never called 911 and the child soon died and decomposed in the crib. eventually, chance's body was found buried here in north port. as you can tell, the community mourned alongside the family. and today, kristin bury pled no contest in court. she has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. >> she made a choice that day. to let my tiny grandson chance die a horrible death. >> we had such big plans for him. we were looking forward to spoiling him. >> reporter: her stepfather john moroski experienced regret he never got to hold baby chance. >> i feel this sentence is not harsh enough. when we have been sentenced to

>> reporter: we burned bury gave away her first child in exchange for a car. she also takes medicine for depression. borderline personality and bipolar disorder. her mother says she had a normal happy childhood, but as an adult, she made mistakes and will now pay for them. >> i hope she enjoys her life. >> in my eyes, she's a monster. >> reporter: as part of this plea deal, bury has agreed to testify against her husband, joseph walsh. back to you. >> which means his trial is still down the road. so what's the latest on joseph walsh? when is he going to be on trial? >> reporter: he is awaiting trial charged with second degree murder. no trial date has been set yet. we will stay on top of that. as soon as we know, we will let you know. >> that is a tragedy. john rogers, live in sarasota, thank you. video surveillance shows

largo police say this is wayne barfield at the all about puppy store. after stuffing a tiny yorkie in his sweater, he sauntered out the door. now, while police did find barfield, he didn't have the puppy with him. tonight, there is good news to report, however. the nine week old yorkie han been found and is now being cared for by a veterinarian. peter bernard is live in largo tonight with the details. people so worried about this puppy. >> reporter: they were, good evening stacie schaible. gone more than a week, the thief sold the puppy and that person sold the pup again. this pup was made very sick. wrapped up in a blanket, this tiny female yorkshire terrier

her week long odyssey ended at a vet hospital. a vet tech here scanned for a microchip that came to all about puppies. the manager got the call. >> my heart is pounding somebody calling and asking about it. they said we have your dog. i was like, what? >> reporter: security cameras caught the thief in action, largo police tell us this is wayne barfield last tuesday stuffing the puppy under his sweater and headed for the door. on friday, he tried to pedal away on a bicycle as police moved in, but he didn't have the puppy. he traded the $1,600 dog for cash and cocaine. >> it is disgusting. >> reporter: the yorkie has a lung infection, internal parasite, and bleeding but her prognosis is good. the thief has a long wrap sheet.

she is destined to go to a new family. 8 on your side is proud to help. >> we are so thankful for you guys. you had so much to do with it. >> reporter: and you can see the all about puppies place is having some fun with it. they got their stolen yorkie back. largo police are interviewing the couple that bought the dog. a vet tech says that couple had no idea that this little puppy was stolen. >> so i'm sure a lot of people are wondering what will happen to the puppy now, peter? >> reporter: the puppy is at another vet near the beach. when she is feeling better she will go through some training sale. >> a lot of people will want that cute little dog. glad she is okay. tonight. we have new information manatee county. the victims knew each other. karl tuxford was shot and

less than an hour later, jordan finland was found on the side of the road. they knew each other. the murders are connected. and polk county detectives are investigating a dead lichting. the victim's body was found in the woods in davenport. he has been identified as alexander viggo jr. he had a long criminal history. lakeland police believe that they have solved two cold cases and one of them dates back nearly eight years. earnest allen was gunned down in front of his lakeland home in 2008. and jamal flemming was shot an killed in a lakeland gas station in 2014. prosecutors believe the public helped police to break these cases. >> we encourage anyone out there who has information on any unresolved cases to come forward and share that with law enforcement. one bit of information might be

solve a very serious crime. cases. them. but they don't want to reveal that information right now. hillsborough county detectives are trying to track down a gun stolen from an unlocked car. the thieves were caught on surveillance video in the river crest subdivision. they grabbed a loaded nine console. a two alarm warehouse fire caused a traffic mess in sarasota county today. dr. martin luther king jr. way was shut down. fortunately, no one was hurt. well, an ordinary item pulled from the wreckage. >> but now, it has so much more meaning. coming up, a sarasota couple's kind gesture for the grieving family of the duet tornado victims. >> plus, preparing for pirates.

>> two people in sarasota stepped up to help a family devastated by a deadly tornado. steve and katie wilson died in the tornado in duet. christiansen and corey are friends of their neighbors. they came to help clean up and found that frame. sand it down, painted it, and gave it to the victims family. >> it was battered, beat up. myself and katrina, we sanded it down, smoothed it all out. added some custom paint work we touched up to it. >> that frame will now be prominent leader displayed at the couple's funeral saturday in bradenton. bulk shipping is up, but the number of cruise ship passengers is down slightly in tampa. the head of port tampa bay gave a state of the port address today.

take over tampa bay. and city leaders are gearing up well. >> tampa police all preparing to handle the big huge crowds and the revelry. mary mcguire joins us live from the epicenter of it all. >> reporter: hey guys. as you can see, preparations for this year's gasparilla parade are already set up. the bleachers are already up a few days before the parade. those are the ones you can see. today's tampa's police chief talked about all of the things happening behind the scenes designed to keep you safe. living in tampa's historic high park neighborhood, michelle heinz knows what she is in for as thousands upon thousands of parade goers prepare to descend on bay shore boulevard. >> it works as a cautionary tale for children. we have seen interesting things as all hours.

the celebration's reputation as a place for binge drinking, especially when it comes to minors. >> we know our kids are directly involved in the festivities. >> reporter: they are reminding people of the consequences. this year's parade will also be the first one following major terror attacks in paris and san bernardino. but tampa's police chief say theres are no credible threat to the tampa bay area. >> there are no significant threat that's would prevent this event from taking place. >> reporter: as the pirates prepare to invade tampa bay, heinz's love for the city outweighs all of the other concerns in her mind. >> i think it adds color. people come here because they love tampa. they want to have a good time. >> reporter: now, also at today's announcement, i thought this was pretty interesting.

their drones at home when they woman tout the gasparilla parade because that is actually against federal regulations to people. is saturday. what advice do they have for the parents attending that? >> reporter: the national weather service is forecasting a pretty cold windy day and since kids are little and they lose heat a lot quicker than us adults to bundle them up and make sure you pack extra layers for that parade. >> though there is a huge crowd, it is still going to be chilly out there. >> for sure. >> yep. >> thank you mary. mary mcguire live in tampa tonight. as we move along, saturday, january 30 will carry the gasparilla parade of pirates live. always happy to do that.

will be cohosting the coverage and holloway will the pirate reporter on the street. doing all that arghing and all that stuff. parade starts at 2:30. we will stream it live on wfla.com. sure, it is chilly out, but with a view like this, it is hard to complain. michael edgar's beautiful shot here of the mangroves, you can barely see a cloud in the sky. a nice sight there. also, a great sight this evening from our camera out at frenchies in clear water beach as the sun is settingful great colors there. temperature ins the upper 50s so it is already cool out, but not going to be as cold as last night was. we had some frost in areas and david sent us this neat photo. he called it sprinkler art. this is what he woke up to.

prepared to the west of us. you can see it is starting to develop. bringing heavier showers and storms. we are look at some pretty significant snowfall totals. anywhere from one to two feet in places like virginia. atlanta may see some snow. the cold front will bring us cooler weather an some storms. but for tonight, still quiet. with more of a southeasterly flow. helps to moderate our temperatures so we will stay in the upper 40s for tonight. by the afternoon hours, we reach into the low 70s . notice our forecast model build ago little more cloud cover, but it will stay dry thursday night but friday morning we will see the showers and storms develop. these will push through during the day. mainly looking at showers, some isolated thunderstorms, maybe an isolated severe storm. but the severe storms are not going to be widespread. but we will still of course you.
