4:22 pm
lightning are a few years behind chicago's pace but believes the hawk's model for success is the way to go in today's nhl. >> look at chicago, they don't finish first in their division every year, they just make the play-offs every year. once they get in, they go about their business. i'm sure teams are like, oh, we drew chicago, that sucks. so you want that. and that's where we want to get to the point of, oh, wow, we drew tampa, not too excited about this. >> reporter: and the other big story that everyone in the bay area is talking about today, updates on the saga. now yesterday the lightning general manager received a call from the agent to of the former number three overall pick. he said that he would not be reporting to last night's game because he thought a trade was close and didn't want to risk injury. to put it bluntly, he did not agree with the sentiment and

without pay. and now both parties are in a precarious position. >> we will trade him if and when we can make a deal that is good for the tampa bay lightning in that sense, nothing has changed. >> reporter: it began in november when he privately asked to trade after jonathan was assigned to the american hockey league this month, he went public with the demands. that changed everything. >> with the shot and he ties it up. >> i think if you ask every single player in the locker room, at some point, they have been frustrated by their situation and they worked through it. there's not an exact progression for every single player. it's different. and i know jonathan wanted to play more. he stated he is not happy with how he was used. i understand that. but cooper is doing a good job. and ill like to the think that we're doing a good job of bringing the kids along.
4:24 pm
>> reporter: but what the plan now? he has come off as a toxic asset to any locker room. and his trade value has diminished dramatically. he maintains there's significant interest but a deal has never been close. >> where this goes and how it plays out, i don't know. he becomes a very good hockey player, all would be forgotten, i would assume. >> this a situation like this, everybody's got to accept a little bit of responsibility, including myself. >> reporter: definitely a sticky situation for the lightning organization. this story is not over yet, josh. >> all right. quick question, is this fiasco a result of jonathan being a bit of a diva? is it his agent? where do we think it's coming from? >> reporter: yeah, he was asked that question today. and kind of deferred saying if you have a chance to ask that
4:25 pm
so but as far as he is concerned, its like walsh is representing his client to the best of his ability. so you have to think that the 20-year-old is the one calling the shots behind the scenes. >> all right, paul, thanks for the update. we will continue to watch. and last time we checked, there are still tickets available for tonight's game. >> but i've heard they're not cheap. >> not cheap. >> the puck drops at 7:30. we will be there live bringing you the action until then. and stick around, we will
