on snow and ice across the northeast, making life miserable, travel treacherous, as millions brace for a weekend full of shovelling and snow- blowing. finding traction on the roads in nashville was impossible today as the massive storm made its way eastward targeting virginia, maryland, and dc, with the potential for even 2 feet of snow before it's over.

anticipation of what was coming. this is a live look at the capitol building where the ground is already covered in white. and here in the bay area, the tail end of that weather system brought a fast-moving line of storms that caused some damage. just look at this tree that came crashing into a home on san juan street in tampa. and josh thomas is there live for us tonight. >> reporter: good evening. the job for the people who own this house is just beginning. but imagine the shock when they were told a tree was on their house. little did they know it was inside as well. the strong storms that blew through the bay area left its mark especially at this south tampa home. >> it definitely is a tree in the house. [ laughter ] >> no other way to describe it. >> reporter: when neighbors told them what happened they couldn't believe it until they saw the damage. >> it looks like a tree is just pierced through the roof

floor and first floor, and it's just sticking through the living room. >> reporter: they have a lot of cleanup ahead of them. insulation strewn around, having their roof repaired. the strong storm also uprooted trees. >> it was quick. if it lasted two minute, it would have been more damage. >> reporter: tony was working outside. >> i was unloading a truck of mulch, and within seconds it just blew. i thought it was like a mini- tornado or something. >> reporter: it probably wasn't a tornado but straight line winds that left this damage behind. the storms will make this anything but a relaxing weekend for the people who have to clean up this mess. our stormy weather may have moved through quickly, but

days up north. steve harv jerve joins us now. >> they'll be digging out for a long time. and the satellite continues to show this movement of clouds from west to east across the area. you back to the west, you can see quite a few clouds. strato cumulus crowds. the storms are history for now. pushing off to the east. just a little rain left over. very rough surf in place too. and tonight's temperatures will be in the 50-degree range, 55 for tomorrow. temps recent gonna change too much. very cold. low pressure rising up the east coast, high pressure from the west. and the snowfall totals are impressive.

washington dc. washington. it's coming down pretty good there at moment. farther north we're looking at west virginia, northern virginia, estimated 30 inch was snow. washington dc could see record snowfall here. climbing up into the northeast, we see the storm system there. our computer model forecast continues to move this area of low pressure, it's a classic nor'easter that way. it's grabbing lots of moisture off the atlantic, turning it into the colder air. for us this high pressure area will settle in. that will give us a cool and breezy weekend. we'll have more coming up later on. the winter wallop along the east coast is causing delays and cancellations at tampa international airport of the it's puring weekend tramp -- putting weekend travel plans in jeopardy for thousands. >> reporter: when you approach the ticket counter to check in, this is the last thing you want to see. a radar image with all kinds of pinks and blues.

you're heading that way. this traveller found himselfed biding his time. >> we were supposed to leave morning. now we are leaving evening. in finland, at least 18 hours late. >> reporter: people spent their time sleeping, reading or grabbing a cup of coffee. the starbucks line grew as the cancellations grew. finding a seat to plunk down and relax proved to be a challenge at times. the storm has caused delays for thousands of flights across the u.s. and it's not over yet. today's winds and rain threw a wrench in the plans for cleanup crews in sarasota. workers had to protect the exposed buildings from further damage. >> reporter: the rains were coming down. workers were still out. >> down to the wire.

out here at the tornado-ravaged condos for 70 hours this week. >> we do what it takes. oo >> reporter: they had to plywood. the tarp. >> reporter: they're protecting the building from further damage. that's why this generator is out here, powering devices inside the condos to prevent mold and algae from forming. officials are confident that tarp will hold for this weekend's strong wind. two driveway paving scam artists are finally behind bars. and it all started with our investigation.

>> reporter: ten months later and roxy is still dealing with this mess. two roaming pavers, professional rip-off artists swindled her for more than $10,000. in return she got asphalt so thin that within day, grass grew right through it. >> i came out, and it was gone. gone. >> reporter: that was her last march. our investigation into shady pavers caught the attention of the hillsboro county sheriff's office. and now after ten months, this scam hit a roadblock. samuel morris stanley and is his son-in-law jesse cooper were arrested, booked into the pasco county jail. >> i'm so happy. they need to pay for what they've done. it's not just to me, it's to many people. my neighbors, people down the road. today we learned the tampa bay buccaneers' ring of honor

washington dc tonight. snow still coming down. interesting to see the totals as they add up. a couple of feet possible, especially west of dc into northern virginia, west virginia. our weather is gonna be breezy, a few clouds around for tomorrow morning. a few flurries early in the day for gasparilla. for sunday high pressure builds more down the peninsula, we'll see a lot more sun. >> 58 degrees. 71 today. we jump back up for tuesday and wednesday. temperatures fairly mild still. but the cold air, not quite here yet. tomorrow morning or afternoon, 55 degrees, partly to mostly cloudy skies. by sunday, lots of blue sky, and a little less wind.

gale warnings in place for the mariners. low pressure continues up the east coast. snow falling mostly south of new york. all this spreads into pittsburgh, ohio. here's the cold front. sprildz back to our west. light showers from west to east. we have seen some clear patches. for saturday morning, partly cloudy skies, windy, sprinkles bite afternoon, more sunshine. clearing skies. lines of equal pressure close together indicate stronger winds and more of a northerly direction. that stays fairly cool for us.

in los angeles a high- speed pursuit was stopped. in new zealand, a little differently. a flock of sheep did the trick today! a farmer herded the sheep into the middle of the road, causing the driver to come to a stop after 90 minutes on the run. just imagine the sheer excitement! >> and police ended up making four arrests. our producer should be locked puns. >> and maybe the sound effects as well. did you hear that? >> oh! too much.
