right now, an amber alert is in effect for two children last seen in st. petersburg. they were staying with their grand importants but they are now believed to be with their mother. authorities fear the children may be in danger. we are live with the very latest. >> reporter: good evening. we're in front of the grandparent's house. this is where the kids were last seen sometime late last night. and it's believed that their mother came into the house, she has a key and took them sometime in the overnight hours now take a look at some of the pictures police. this is 5-year-old and her brother, a 4-year-old. again, they were last seen sometime last night. their mother. now she lost custody of the kids back in august. she was allowed to have supervised visits and this the first time she has taken the kids like this but they say in

that if she loses custody of the children that she will kill herself and the children. so there's a lot of concern to find the kids and find out that they're okay at this time. and now police tell us that they do have good information, that she was last seen in north florida. they wouldn't tell us how they found out that information but they continue to try and track the her down at this time. in the past few minute, the grandparents that live here at this home just left. i also saw detectives leaving the scene and also talked to a man who tells me he is the children's father. he tells me he's terribly concerned. and we will have much more coming up at 5:00 on news channel 8. >> thank you live in s t. petersburg. and now we want to check your first at 4:00 weather. raining in st. petersburg right now. here's julie phillips. >> yeah, a lot of showers that have been continuing through day. it hasn't been too stormy but light to moderate showers have been occurring throughout the

so far this location today, we picked up about .50 of rain. some spots have seen heavier rain for a longer period of time. and winds now beginning to pick up out of the north between 10 to 15 miles per hour. and again, that's due to the cold front we're watching. it's moving south of our area but we have upper-level energy that's bringing in some fairly decrept rainfall totals for today. and you can see the showers moving from west to east across the region. and right on top of downtown tampa, downtown st. pete, we're looking at some decrept downpours coming down. you can see -- decent downpours coming down. you can see the oranges and the reds. i'm not tracking much in the way of lightning within the rain but the showers will continue through this evening. the rain chances come to an end overnight and temperatures will cool down. we'll have a look at the numbers in the full forecast. well a reporting error has the city of lakeland reconsidering red light cameras.

decrease in the number of accidents at intersections with red light cameras. but now a new look at that data shows the number of accidents may have actually gone up. lakeland's mayor has been a supporter of the devices but is now reconsidering. >> if they're not doing what we thought they were going do, to do, we have to look at replacing the cameras. >> the city has a contract that expires in 2017. the city council is expected to take up the issue at its meeting tomorrow. tampa police looking for the man who robbed a woman as she stood on her porch. take a good look at the sketch. police tell us that this man attacked the woman. a motion light and a barking dog scared him off but if you recognize this guys, give police a call. and we learned that a house that was the target of a home invasion in pasco county was a drug house. karen clark is accused of

arrested. someone inside the home accidentally shot a teenage early this morning. the girl is still in the nasa held a memorial service at the kennedy space center to honor the astronauts killed in the "challenger" disaster. 30 years ago, the space shuttle exploded after lift-off, killing its crew of seven. investigations concluded that cold weather caused parts of the shuttle to break apart. today at 5:00, we sit down with a group of students to talk about the disaster and what they think that america learned from it. legislation that would allow the open carry of committee in tallahassee today. >> reporter: the debate over open carry is dividing florida's law enforcement community, the florida

american gun maker usa is announcing plans to make the famous aka 47 assault rifle in florida. guns assembled at the factory will be sold to retailers elsewhere. the company previously imported the weapons from moscow. the company launched new rifles and shotguns at a firearms conference last week. mattel is now offering barbie in three new shape, tall, petite and curvy. starting today, the shape cans be purchased online exclusively at mattel shop. they have been transforming barbie for two years to bring her in line with realistic body types.

they'll be available at retailers. and we have breaking news in an 8 on your side investigation right now. a federal judge in tampa has we speak is considering the fate of a spring hill couple convicted of wire fraud. the couple lied about a 21-foot sinkhole void underneath their home when they sold it to new home buyers. the judge has deliberated outloud for about 50 minutes or 40 minutes rather before taking a break. he said he is struggling with his decision on whether or not to send them to prison. we will have details coming up tonight at 6:00 right here on news channel 8. well looks like donald trump is going to keep his promise the to boycott tonight the's republican presidential debate. >> coming up, a preview of tonight's debate in iowa. where our very own keith cate will be during the caucuses. and dan lucas talks to the buccaneer's new offensive

joining us now for another look at the weather. man, this has been the dreariest day in a while. >> it has. and day two as well. and the good news, we have been talking about how it's happening mid-week so things clear out in time for gasparilla. >> i hope you're right. we're paying for it now in the idea that the weekend is going to be great. >> i can pretty much guarantee that things are looking good for this weekend. we are looking at a cool down but the gasparilla forecast is looking great. as the invasion begins at 11:30, temperatures will be back up into the low 60s. so on the cool side, maybe a light sweater to start the day, partly cloudy and then top out in the upper 60s as the parade begins. winds will be light on saturday so what will be on the cool side, winds won't be a factor and sun and clouds through the day and no rain expected this gasparilla. for the even, that's a different story. lingering showers expected to

and temperatures fairly mild in the mid-60s. and the rain will come to an end by midnight tonight. and then things will be over with for a while. currently tracking anywhere from the light rain, the blue you see on here, to decent downpour, the oranges and the reds sitting over st. pete and tampa. these are pushing toward the east and i think the heaviest of the rain will be over with by 7:00 p.m. tonight. the front is off to the south. we have upper eleven energy bringing the rain. not only does the rain end but the skies also clear. tomorrow morning, expect clear skies, cooler temperatures in the 40s and 50s for us. and then as we head into tomorrow afternoon, we will be below average in the low to mid- 60s. and it will be breezy. so with northwest winds up to 20 miles per hour, you will want to keep the jacket handy through the day. and as we head into gasparilla saturday, mild temperatures in up ther 60s, light winds and high pressure in place will really allow for a beautiful start to the weekend and then sunday gets better as the high

the southeasterly wind flow returns and we will see partly cloudy and warming temperatures into the low 70s sunday afternoon. right now, we're many the upper 60s, mid-60s across the region, still 70 in wimauma. cooler temperatures to the north of us. 57 in jacksonville this afternoon. 54 in montgomery. and that's thanks to the cooler air the cool front is bringing in. falling back into the mid-60s for tomorrow, chilly in the 40s to begin with saturday morning. and then we warm up as we head into next week. there's something new happening in downtown tampa, it's a block party. and the first one kicks off in under an hour regardless of the weather. news channel 8's gayle guyardo tells us about the free bash. >> reporter: this is just another step in making downtown tampa a live, work, play city. and they're kicking it off with a block party. set-up is underway on historic

whatever they're looking for, they're following people who are posting the information. and sometimes maybe it's not great. maybe it's not even true at all. or maybe it could hurt you. >> so you are seeing a range of things being posted. illnesses, about vaccines, just about anything, right? >> yeah, and actually so what we just saw is that the journal vaccine did a study. they found 800 images on pinterest about vaccines. so of those 800 image, they found that 75% of them were negative and saying that sax were a bad thing. when you compare it to a research study last year, 83% of americans say they support it. so it's very different representation of reality. >> and this is probably a trigger with for mark zuckerberg who showed his baby getting vaccinations. >> yeah, i think so. and it shows that, you know, when there's a vocal minority or people who feel strongly

but we are working to address that issue. >> the pinellas school district ongoing campaign to recruit and train new bus drivers. well medical marijuana is back on the ballot this year. >> and florida lawmakers are now weighing in. matt has more on this story today. >> reporter: voters will decide the future of medical marijuana in this state now that a ballot initiative that was narrowly defeated just two years ago returns this november. the amendment got the required amount of signatures needed to get on november's ballot and it aims to allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana for patients with diseases like hiv, aids, epilepsy and cancer. the representative helped pass florida's limited medical marijuana law in 2014. >> part of the problem with putting cannabis policy in the constitution that as the

rainy day and the rain is still coming down in a lot of areas. here in south tampa, still dealing with showers and have picked up .86 inchesover rain so far just today. a lot of us saw about an inch of rain yesterday as well. and temperatures in the mid-60s now. and you can see the showers moving from west to east, not much in the way of lightning. but we're definitely dealing with the rain across the tampa bay area. w the heaviest of it near tampa over towards polk city, lakeland and dade city and the southern portions of pasco county. and sosa what to expect for the even, moderate to light showers going to continue for a lot of us but toward midnight, the rain chances come to an end as the cold front pushes south of us. and then through the overnight hour, much cooler air will move in, and temperatures will drop back to around 50, skies will clear and breezy northwest winds will develop through the overnight hours and more on what to expect for your weekend forecast including that all- important gasparilla forecast coming up in a few minutes. guys --

it's one of those calls deputies don't get very often, if at all. a pregnant cow stuck in a pond fighting for her life and the whole thing caught on camera. the rescue is incredible. paul mueller the story. >> got a cow down. >> reporter: definitely not your run of the mill rescue. the pasco deputy's body camera showing the sad scene, the 3- death's door. >> holding her head up out of the water. >> reporter: the good samaritan driverring by the ranch full of cows but this beauty in particular all by herself. he knew something was wrong. >> this must have just happened otherwise she would have drowned. >> reporter: the cow not out of the woods by a long shot. >> what about a log?

so we've got the weather max app forecast. waking up tomorrow morning, on the cooler side, low 50s but check out what we're dealing with, not dealing with the clouds or the rain, we're going to be dealing with mostly sunny skies. and expect that to continue through the day but it will be cooler and it will be breezy as well with temperatures only into the mid-60s. currently still tracking some decent downpours in places like bradenton, sarasota, over towards lakeland, portions of hillsborough county with steady rain coming down. and we've had reports in highlands county of standing rain. that's not a surprise because we have seen a good amount of rain through the day. showers continue through the evening but the heaviest will be done by 7:00 p.m. and then still some lingering light rain through the late night hours and by midnight, we're clear and skies start to clear into the overnight hours and by tomorrow morning, clear skies and breezy conditions for us. so with the clear skies, we're also dealing with the cooler

and it will be breezy all the way into the afternoon hours. talking about northwest winds gusting to 20 miles per hour. and with temperatures in the mid-60s, it will be kind of a brisk, cool, winter-like day the for us at least when it comes to winters here in florida. by saturday, high pressure rolls in and this will allow light wind, mild temperatures and really a wonderful gasparilla forecast. no chance of rain and temperatures back into the upper 60s. by sunday, notice partly cloudy skies with us. the winds are more southeasterly which allowses to warm back into the 70s and we will warm up through next week. outside currently, still dealing with the rain and here's a look at the 48 hour rainfall totals, this is really day two of the event for us and. the secondaries have picked up 1 to 2 inches of rain. and you can see some parts of southern highlands county, 2 to 3 inches of rain. and also dealing with generally the same story in pasco, hillsborough, pinellas county,

afamily-friendly outing there, are always new things at the children's museum in downtown tampa. and jan is the new c ex-o. and she joins us now to tell us about -- the ceo and she joins us now to tell us about the latest topic, the chinese new year. welcome to tampa. >> thank you so much. we are so excited about february and chinese new year. which is kicking off on february 6th. and so we will have a range of activities for all kinds of kids from toddlers to upper elementary to kids. and we will be celebrating the chinese culture. it's the year of the monkey. >> okay. >> and it is also going to start february 6th through the 11th. and we will continue to help kids understand the importance of chinese culture. >> and why is that such an important educational tool? >> well, i have a daughter and she has been taking chinese since she was five. and i have a few topics to show you. and there's some great & too that we have. and if you look at chinese

different than ours. chinese writing is a picture. but this character means human, man. it's just a man standing. if you change and create another line, it means big. can you see how the picture makes you big? >> makes sense. >> exactly. and you can be in the sky when you put that extra line over it. so the characters build upon each other. this is 2,000 years worth of invasion from chinese culture. we love studying their language. they gave us kites, all kinds of wonderful books and printing presses. >> and i know there's going to be things like lantern build, paper dragons, chinese tea service. all kinds of interesting things and i would imagine that's all listed on the website. >> it absolutely is. we love really covering the entire culture from dressing up to the traditional books, the language as well as the tea
