a sinkhole sits beneath a bay area apartment complex. our 8 on your side investigation uncovers the hidden dangers. >> and keith cate is live in iowa ahead of the eye caucuses. >> and what you need to know before heading out to tomorrow's gasparilla parade. thank you for joining us tonight. a routine traffic stop 'goes horribly wrong. a deputy shoots a man twice and now after a month-long investigation, that deputy is out of a job and on the wrong side of the law. the deputy claims he was forced to fire while in fear for his life. but the sheriff says there was never any struggle over that gun and the deputy flat out lied. paul mueller joins us now live from the pinellas county sheriff's office. paul, bring us up to speed here. >> reporter: well, jen, the sheriff well known here for keeping his deputies on the right side of the law. but as for this deputy who

[ gunshots ] >> reporter: dylan is hit in the wrist and stomach. then the call for backup. >> we need fire and rescue. shots fired. copy, we have a mail down with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. >> reporter: how could dylan sitting in the cruiser go for the gun in his drunken state? >> while handcuffed, do this, do this, do this, then get the gun out. didn't happen. assuming the deputy's version, which is impossible, it didn't there's no way. home today? >> nope, we have no comment. >> reporter: nine years at the

before that at st. pete police department, where his medal of valor and purple heart stood out, after being grazed by a bullet years ago. >> just did what i was trying to do, and keep going. >> reporter: the sheriff says trained to protect and serve, not lie and cover it up. now, the other deputy there at the time said dylan never even went for the gun, that he quote, ran his mouth. as for the deputy tonight, he is out on bond. josh? >> paul mueller, live in pinellas county, thank you, paul. breaking news right now in tampa. police are searching for a stolen car after an armed car jacking. a woman was sitting in her car at north central avenue and east kirby street when a man pointed a gun at her and ordered her out. they are searching for the stolen 2014 black ford focus right now, with florida tags.

you're urged to call tampa police. the presidential candidates spent the day crisscrossing the state of iowa, campaigning for votes, just three days ahead of the iowa caucuses. >> our keith cate traveled to iowa for the caucuses. he joins us now, where florida senator marco rubio's volunteers are working tonight. keith? >> reporter: we moved to des moines because the capital looked beautiful this evening. and really, these guys are working so hard up to the last minute because time is running out. think about it. on monday night at 7:00, the good people of iowa are going to go to their places, going to caucus, then vote. before the night is over, we're going to know who the winners are, which republican, which democrat will move on victorious from the state of iowa. and all of these people running for office have dedicated volunteers, who are really coming from all across the

candidate's behalf. tonight, we went to ankeny to spend time at one of senator marco rubio's campaign headquarters. >> reporter: looking through a storefront in ankeny, iowa, we found a room not much bigger than a two-car garage, flowing with volunteers in support of florida senator marco rubio, most working late into the night. as many as 50 are being deployed from florida. >> this is worth it. it's a reason for freezing. >> reporter: adam hasner is from florida. >> is there a chance that marco rubio could finish second in iowa on monday? >> i'm not going to play the expectations game. we definitely nomar company's going to have a strong showing. we've made strong commitment to iowa. he's been traveling the state event after event after event all week, through the weekend. we're going to keep working through monday night. >> reporter: these volunteers pay their own way, use their own phones, tell their own stories about why people should

lynn collins is from tallahassee. >> people want to know the candidate. and if you're not meeting the candidate in person, certainly speaking to people who know him isn't a bad thing. >> i just wanted to remind you that the caucus is this monday. >> reporter: it's hard not to notice the youth movement in this campaign. shelby truett is 24. she has been working the phone for 12 hours. >> i'm actually here because my friend emily, we drove up together. >> so just for this? >> just for this, yeah. >> this is a round trip? >> i convinced my boyfriend, a rubio. he's been campaigning the last two weekends with me. >> really? >> apparently! >> reporter: the rubio campaign is not alone when it comes to rallying younger troops. every campaign has pulled pages from the highly successful campaign playbook of candidate barack obama. >> they got to have young voters. any republican candidate has got to have college students on their side also. they are the energy behind the campaign. they work night and day.

the party and they are also, again, the biggest generation that american history has seen, even bigger than the baby boomers. >> reporter: young or old, this is a lot of work and the nights are only getting longer. and the polls continue to show marco rubio in third place among republicans, but there will be a brand-new poll coming out tomorrow by the des moines register. lot of people seem to be talking that marco rubio may even slide up, challenging second place over ted cruz. and of course that would be something. that's a chief rival for donald trump. speaking of trump, he's going to be here tomorrow. we plan to cover him. get this, he'll be in clinton, iowa. clinton, iowa. trump will be there. we're going to be there to cover it. earlier, if you were watching our 6:00 newscast, jen and josh, you actually saw the rally for hillary clinton. lot of people there saying we would like to see hillary take on donald trump. that is the political cage

one of the busiest roadways in the city. we found a disturbing report from seven years ago, so alarming the city took immediate action. shannon behnken has the story. >> we're trying to get information about what's going >> no questions. >> we have an engineering report here that says this interesting should be demolished and no one should ever live here again. can you tell us more about it? are you putting people in danger by having people live next to this massive hole? >> reporter: a void at least 100 feet deep lurks beneath this building at the french quarter apartments on armenia avenue. our 8 on your side investigation found the property owner found out seven years ago, yet did nothing to fix the sinkhole activity. the property owner did move a few residents out of one building in 2008, right after an engineer hired by citizens property insurance, wrote any attempt to grout or underpin

collapse of the material above the voids with catastrophic results. the engineer went on to say the dangers reduce sinkhole activity should not be remediated and one building abandoned and not built upon again. >> we don't want the building collapsing with people inside. >> reporter: strong words. yet 8 on your side found tampa code enforcement was never notified. >> all i can tell you is i wish we knew eight years ago, but we know about it now, so we'll take care of it. >> reporter: another big concern, busy armenia avenue. i wanted to know just how close the worst sinkhole activity is from the busy road, so i measured it myself. >> about 55 feet. >> reporter: you heard me right. just 55 feet. after meeting with 8 on your side, code enforcement sent an inspector out within the hour to document cracks, particularly troubling the engineer called these two

but seven years later, we found residents clueless. >> i'll be definitely scared. >> somebody should be able to, um, help us move before anything bad happens. >> reporter: late this afternoon, i reached an attorney for the property owner. she says there have been no repairs because this case is in litigation with the insurance company. she also said that safety is a top priority and the on-site on the buildings. code enforcement tells me that is not good enough and they have asked the state to step in. >> i have a lot of questions you've got a report that's seven years old, which makes me wonder, do they need another report, a new report? and could this have gotten worse? >> well, that is one of the first questions i asked code they tell me they definitely want a new report because they want to see if it's gotten worse. everyone we've talked to says sinkholes don't get better. >> all right.

well, nearly a million nissan altima cars are recalled tonight over a hood latch problem. that latch could allow the hood to just fly open while the car is moving. imagine that. the recall involves altimas from the 2013 through 2015 model years. in previous recalls, technicians applied lubricant to the latch, but if it isn't done evenly, you could still experience a problem. well, the weekend is here. lot of festivities going on. 69 degrees for a high on saturday. should be a lot of sunshine early in the day. we'll pick up high clouds as the day progresses. then sunday, near 73 degrees with a few added clouds overall. check this out. five planets before sunrise going on, into the early part of february. mercury, venus, saturn, mars and jupiter, again, looking south before sunrise. sunrise these days, about 6:08. again, five planets looking to the south before sunrise. that's going to depend, obviously, on the skies.

we're going to have some fun again. it's going to be a feel-out process the first couple of shifts. then once the competitive juices come out, should be fun. stephen stamkos is in nashville for his fourth nhl all-star game, but will it be his last as a member of the tampa bay lightning? columbus, stamkos reassured his hometown fans, saying he was happy in tampa. seemed clear his intention was to sign a contract extension as soon as possible. yet a full year later, stammer's future in a bolts sweater is still up in the air. his immediate future is pretty much set in stone, playing in sunday's three-on-three

in tomorrow's hardest shot competition and skills challenge relay. as for the contract status, that was the question of the day. stammer admits he's only human and, yes, he does think about it. >> it's in your head, for sure. you try not to not let it affect your play on the ice. you come on the rink, that's kind of like the safe zone a little bit. and the guys understand. there's guys that have been through this before. kind of becomes the norm after a while, where you get into that routine and answering the same questions over and over. just going out there and trying to have some fun still. perhaps stammer could have fun with his pal ben bishop. the bolts starting goaltender is making his first all-star appearance this weekend, taking part in the goalie goals portion of tomorrow's skills competition. >> should be a fun experience. you grew up watching it as a kid. now to be a part of it, to
