it's 7:00. the station on your side is on your schedule. 8 at 7. big news now. good evening. tonight there are some serious questions about the safety of students in sarasota county. the auditor general found the school district is not staying up to date on its background checks for teachers and staff. today john rogers went to find out how long it will take until everyone is screened. >> reporter: under florida law every teacher and staffer must

when they are hired. be rescreened every five years, and the audit found the school district has failed to do that for every employee. in fact, some staffers haven't been screened since 2002. the school district explained they haven't done so because they have limited staff available. spokesperson assured that suicide are not in danger. the official said these periodic checks need to happen and are happening, but all staff have been thoroughly background screened. the school district expects to have everyone properly screened by june 30. john rogers, news channel 8. burglary victims had their chance to reclaim items. investigators believe men broke into 30 homes in five different counties in december and january stealing electronics, jewelry and firearms. police say they caught the duo saturday while they were

the items recovered are worth nearly $200,000, although some were priceless and irreplaceable. >> your wedding rings are in here somewhere. some of my mother's stuff. my mother is gone, too. that's stuff you couldn't replace. i couldn't put a value on it. maybe somebody could, but i couldn't. >> both men face numerous burglary charges. detectives believe they could be connected to more cases. raw sewage plagues the city of gulfport. in august rains forced them to pump 15,000 gallons of untreated waste into the bayou. they have been monitoring bacteria levels at the beaches, and today the bayou was deemed off limits because of high bacteria levels and city leaders don't know when the water will be back to normal. >> the materials, the bacteria is still in clam bayou, and it's washing out in the plant material. the plant material is doing its

it is a filtering mechanism. >> still you are having to put those signs up? >> yes, i am. >> the city posts test results every day on its website and on facebook. on the page today the city manager warns upcoming weather events may impact future sample results. governor rick scott now wants a public health emergency declared over the zika virus. there are cases in hillsborough and three other florida counties. in hillsborough county, there are two reported cases of zika, which are believed to have been contracted outside the u.s. now, hillsborough county commissioners are asking for an immediate action plan. they are calling on the health department to educate the public. commissioners have also asked mosquito control if they have everything needed to test and spray is for mosquitoes. >> just today the red cross came out and issued a warning stating if you have traveled to any of these areas and potentially could have been infected, don't donate blood for 28 days after you come back.

zika have been found in the u.s., doctors advice pregnant women to wear long sleeves and repellent. wfla.com is keeping close tabs on developments in the zika outbreak. you find the story on the home page and our breaking news app the water emergency in flint, michigan, has people across the country and right of clean water, and that includes members of phi beta cigna university. they are organizing a water drive for saturday called tampa to flint and they hope to collect and then drive as much water and other supplies as possible to flint next week. >> we pride ourselves on the principles of brotherhood, scholarship and service. service is utmost to me and everyone in my fraternity. >> the phi beta sigma water drive is saturday from nine to five outside psychs business school. tampa office workers

in the middle of a mass jeff patterson shows us tampa police officers put on a training exercise to show people what to do when a shooter shows up. >> reporter: wearing a mask, out. before people can realize what's enters and opens fire. reality as office workers in san bernardino found out recently with a masked shooting in their workplace. in this training exercise police enter quickly, but many victims are already on the floor. >> to actually hear the shots and how loud they are is certainly something that's -- you can never expect. >> reporter: observers knew what to expect. still they seemed caught off guard. >> i mean, it's a little different to see it in the video compared to actually seeing it on site. >> reporter: the idea is to make

that amazon has plans to open more stores. amazon opened one bookstore last fall in seattle. before long you might find a cvs inside a target. the first ever cvs pharmacy opens today in charlotte, north carolina. last june cvs paid 1 is $.9 billion to purchase target's pharmacy business and now more will be rebranded. very good place to get married. the city just came in at number 4 on wallet hub's ranking of 150 cities. tampa scored big points for the number of bridal shops and hotel rooms per capita, and of course the number of nearby activities and attractions. the only cities that ranked higher orlando, las vegas, and atlanta. st. petersburg, in case you are wondering, ranked 39th on the list. and the bay area is also near the top of another ranking.

tampa sarasota area is among the top three moving destinations in the u.s. the bay area third behind atlanta and phoenix and ahead of orlando which ranked number five. penske says their ranking alliance with census data showing more americans moving towards sunny, warm locations. don't be surprised the next time you tap your uber app it looks different. the font on the word uber is a little more rounded and streamlined, but it's the icons getting a lot of attention. the familiar u is gone, replaced with a circle with a tiny cube inside. uber drivers will see a different icon on their app as well. the colors and patterns in the background change base and the country that you are in. a new sports car qatar is getting a lot of attention. some are calling it the ugliest sports car of made.

it has a v8 engine producing 425-horsepower. it was designed and will be built in qatar. edmonds.com called it the ugliest car of all time and others said it is hideous. it will be on sale later this year. city officials in full force inspecting a tampa apartment complex with confirmed sinkhole activity exposed by "8 on your side." as shannon bacon shows, after they took a look they demanded action. >> reporter: city officials showed up in full force. code inspectors, fire marshals and attorneys to inspect the french quarter apartments after our "8 on your side" investigation exposed a massive 100-foot void underneath the center building. >> it seems to be limited to the

>> reporter: the property owner closed up that building shortly after learning of the big hole seven years ago, but the sinkhole activity was not fixed and the landlord continues to collect rent from tenants just feet away. even after engineers warned that other buildings could be in danger, too. city officials though say they were not informed of any of this until "8 on your side" gave them the report. and we were there today when officials got their first building. >> one of the first things you notice when you walk in this apartment is the floor is sloping this way towards armenia avenue, which is on the other side of this wall. there are cracks inside the walls and the ceilings inside and thick cracks outside. a city engineer wants updated drilling here to see if the voids are deeper. what about what the report said about the buildings next door and how they could be in danger? >> yeah. you know, we are looking at that report.

i had my engineer look at it today and he didn't see any indications of anything going on like new cracks. >> reporter: no one disputes the massive hole under building 6411. in fact, the property owner is fighting citizens insurance in court arguing the problem is so bad he needs more money to stabilize the ground. city officials are tired of waiting. they want this fixed and they want confirmation that residents are safe. shannon banken, "8 on your side." >> updated testing will begin next week. engineers will use ground penetrating radar on monday. the issue is set for trial in june and the property owner hopes to receive enough money to fix sinkhole activity under all of the buildings.

it's so windy waterfalls can't fall. gusts up to 90 miles per hour reversed this waterfall in western scotland sending the stream of water back up into the air as a spray of water. it's like a distant fire there. incredible. strong winds there. and how slippery are the roads in south dakota? check out the dashcam video from a highway patrol cruiser. that driver hit a slick patch which led to a spin-out. part of interstate 29 had to be closed in south dakota due to snow and 45-mile-per-hour winds. that will do it. hate to say that's happened to me. it's nice not to flip. mid 70s at 9:00. 75 degrees at 10:00 p.m. low 70s to the late evening hours. going to be mild overnight largely because the humidity came back. strong south winds, gusty at times this evening. a cold front is going to change things. the chance of showers goes up to noon.

pretty decent chance of rain especially central and northern areas. 73 tampa international. same in st. pete. high humidity as well given the time of year, and breezy conditions from the southwest. temps 76 temple terrace. 71 largo. seminole 72. 77 new port richey. 74 sebring and in crystal river. 73 st. pete as we mentioned. 77 lakeland. cold front back to the west of us. cooler air building behind. high pressure is the big feature. it's holding on. this ridge of high pressure breaking down as this trough, this surface front will slide our way and you see the rain here back to the west across the big bend area increasing clouds up until that front will arrive later tomorrow with the cooler air. but rain chances on ahead of that. we look at the rpm forecast computer model. showers around 7:30 in the morning.

west of us at that point. by midday certainly looks like it arrives in the bay area. better chances central and northern areas. we can see areas interior and southern sections as well. friday cooler air moves in. sun comes back. a different feeling day. 63 for a high with partly cloudy skies. 68 degrees for saturday. 61 degrees for sunday. the rain chances have been lowered a little bit. i know we were banking on an area of low pressure to develop to our west. looks like it may develop to our east, which would lower our rain chances. certainly it stays cool through this area. well over a week it looks like 60-degree temperatures. >> you said it earlier. that's pretty good fair weather. i mean, 60 is ideal for people who could be dealing with 30s. >> absolutely. bring a sweater. sunny. i'll get some sun during the day. a nice trip out there. >> it makes corn dogs taste better, too. >> you didn't know that? >> heartburn later. >> we'll be right back. exactly.
