in florida, there are 12 reported cases of the zika virus. five counties declared under a public health emergency. >> they want to be safe. we are going to continue to work with the cdc to get information out. >> reporter: the governor and the state surgeon general armstrong demanding the center for disease control provide a 12 antibody testing kits. >> what that does is tells us that somebody had zika. that is particularly important for pregnant women who traveled abroad. who might have had some symptoms of a rash, a fever. >> reporter: the governor also wants the cdc to provide additional training to florida hospital staff within the next few weeks. scott wants to stay ahead in the game in case the virus spreads. pregnant moms like michelle and kimberly support the governor in his efforts and stood by him in a press conference earlier

>> i don't see any harm in the test kits. >> reporter: kimberly had a cruise planned but canceled at the advice of cruise line officials. >> they said you can't cruise at 25 weeks. then zika came out. >> reporter: the governor saying earlier today, those tests will be going to the areas that have confirmed test results with the zika virus. >> is the governor making these tests mandatory? >> reporter: you know, i asked him that during a press conference a little earlier today. he said no, he is not making them mandatory, but he is hoping people who travel overseas will do the right thing. if they feel any symptoms coming on, they will go to the doctor and take the test. >> thank you very much jamel lanee for that live report. time now for your vote coverage. we are now five days away from

and tonight, another twist. dr. ben carson is making some big changes to his campaign. the republican candidate fired more than 50 staff members today. and his campaign is starting to run out of some money. dr. carson plans to travel with fewer people and is cutting salaries for staff members. he may also start to take commercial flights instead of using private jets. these changes come as the race for the white house continues to heat up on both sides. newschannel8's mark meridith joins us live in dc with a look at where things stand. in new hampshire, we always get a little news when the debates come around. we have a big one tonight between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. >> reporter: you are right about that one. it was amazing we saw all the times before there were three candidates on stage. this time, it is hillary versus bernie. there was a town hall last night. that was a separate event. now, there is no chance to escape the donkey in the room. everyone will want to know after new hampshire, what does

race? but of course, it is not just the democrats in a close seat, republicans are neck and neck as well. >> bernie, bernie, bernie. >> reporter: facing great expectations, vermont senator bernie sanders making every effort to win new hampshire's primary. but victory doesn't come easy. to win, he is sharpening his attacks on hillary clinton. >> i do not know any progressive who has a superpac and takes $15 million from wall street. after squeaking out the narrowest of wins in iowa, clinton is looking past new hampshire. clinton is down by 29 points to sanders in new hampshire. >> actually, i think i came in first. >> reporter: meanwhile, republicans are ready to rumble. donald trump, ted cruz, and ben carson continued to attack each other. the three men claim their competitors are using dirty

the state of iowa should disqualify ted cruz from the most recent election on basis he cheated. a total fraud. >> it is no surprise that donald is throwing yet another temper tantrum or if you like, yet another trumper tantrum. >> reporter: fresh off his third place win in iowa, marco rubio has momentum tied in second in the granite state with 15% support. neck in neck in cruz but long behind donald trump. and the republicans will have their next debate on saturday night. that will be happening in new hampshire. but, the stage will look a little less crowded because paul, santorum, and huckabee have dropped their bids. they will be announcing the lineup in a little bit. but it has gotten so nasty on the campaign trail because as you know, every vote does count as we get closer and closer to

>> it really is make or break time for some of these candidates mark. i asked jeb bush in iowa, do you think you will make it to florida? he says i'll be there. but if he doesn't do well in new hampshire, you have to wonder how long jeb bush can continue. >> reporter: you're right. when you talk to bush, whether it is iowa, that same question comes up whether or not he can keep going past new hampshire. he didn't try to compete that much in iowa. obviously, it is not just jeb bush, but chris christie. they sunk a lot of money, a lot of time, blood, sweat, and tears. they have a fourth place finish. maybe move some votes away from ted cruz. otherwise, it is hard to look at the board and see where they go from there. >> thank you mark meridith. a reminder our political reporter candace mccowan is flying to manchester new hampshire as we speak. beginning tonight at 11:00 and

you can see her live reports right here on newschannel8. she will be on the campaign trail with the candidates following them right up when the ballots are cast beginning tonight at 11:00. here is a story that sounds too strange to be true. a blogger calling for a rally in tampa who support rape. a website called run a kings called for meetups of people who favor rape all over the world. carety park in downtown tampa was mentioned the website. the mayor is repulsed by the idea. >> they need to take that behavior somewhere else. because it doesn't belong in this city. in that park. even though it is not a permitted event. just an impromptu meeting. >> the website is now announcing the meetups are canceled but the mayor's office told us today they have the information. the mayor told us the police

just in case the meetings go on. well, investigators spotted them. three yorkies, underweight, living in filth. >> they impounded the dogs. what happened next is hard to believe. 8 on your side investigative reporter steve andrews is looking into problems at pet resources and looks like you found another one. >> reporter: yeah keith. here's the deal, hillsborough county is pushing hard to lower the animals euthanized. what that means is fewer animals are going into the shelter that we all paid to support. we took our questions to the resource director. we started looking into pet resources when a veterinarian contacted 8 on your side complaining she had a difficult time getting the county to come pick up an abandoned animal left on her property. now, we found a pattern. the county is taking in fewer animals by the thousands.

that while you have increased the live release rate, you have done so at the expense of leaving animals on the street to suffer. how would you respond to that? >> i would disagree with that. >> reporter: according to their own veterinarian, it was office these dogs suffered from hunger, filth, underlying medical conditions. no one was charged in this case. tonight at 11:00, i will tell you what the county did and did not do in this situation and just what it did with the dogs. >> you mentioned the county is taking in thousands of fewer animals. what makes you think that? >> reporter: their own numbers. i look at the numbers on the pet resource westbound site. they showed a significant decline of the number of animals sheltered here in hillsborough county. >> and we pay taxes to shelter them don't we? >> we sure do. >> thank you steve. breaking news now. a data breach at the university

rides to enjoy. rod carter joins us live from the oval office? >> look at you. >> what? >> mr. president? >> reporter: yes, ladies and gentlemen. i give you president carter. how about that right? all right, it is pouring down rain outside, but that is not stopping the fun at the florida state fair. there's a lot you can do here aside from food, food, and more food. you can come to some of the great learning experiences like this. the white house experience. sit yourself behind this replica. just on the other side of this building there is another exhibit unlike anything you have seen here at the florida state fair before. from the thrills high in the air to the taming of a sweet tooth with some candy coated confections, seems there is something for everyone at the florida state fair. >> the state fair is over 100 years old. >> reporter: but for the first time in the fair's 102 year history, there is a display area dedicated to african-

>> it is a part of history. african-americans are part of the history and it is important that when we bring our young folks out here to the fair, the fair is not just about entertainment. it is also about educating them. >> reporter: the exhibit is set up through the hillsborough county school district. it features contributions of african-americans from right here in the bay area. >> this display here represents our struggle for equalities. >> reporter: also here, living history. clarence fort. in 1960 as a 20-year-old president of the naacp youth council, fort organized the first lunch counter it is-in, in downtown tampa. this is him in the picture second from the right. he is a part of this fair exhibit to tell the story. >> the youngsters don't know the struggle that we have had. even my son and my daughter couldn't believe we had to drink out of colored water fountain. they said we were crazy.

include live performances from noted african-americans. and again, that african- american history exhibit which is right next to this exhibit actually stays open until 9:00. but, this is also really a great place to get a lot of history. i want to show you this. i absolutely love cars. this is franklin delano roosevelt's 1939 cadillac limousine. a lot of things you can see here. some presidential china. gowns that the first ladies wore. just because there is a lot of food at the fair, you can eat, and walk around and learn a lot. coming up in about say 30 minutes, i will show you the food item i have been wanting to try. it is right over there. >> i knew it. i knew he was going to get back to the food. >> you know what it is. >> i don't know. is it fried? it is all fried whatever it is. >> what did you say it was? >> it's the fair. you have to watch at 6:00. oh my goodness. >> thank you rod. at wfla.com, we have

about the state fair from entertainment schedules to new attractions, to the hours of the fair. you will fine it all in the don't miss it section. what i am missing though, steve jerve at the fair. usually i see him. >> he usually has a small animal. what did you have that one year? >> a kinkajou? >> a billy goat. >> we try everything. >> we had planned to be out there. obviously, the weather is priority. we are having weather. i like to get out there. obviously, it is always a great time to go out there. for now, you can see why i'm here. it is raining. we have a few thunderstorms. almost two inches up in the western part of citrus county. we mentioned the rain would start in the northern areas. that is exactly what happened here. we have a northwest wind and it is gusty. we have seen gusty conditions throughout the bay area. that likely will continue. that is freedom plaza. the picture is not showing up here. there we go.

with our camera images but you get the idea. area. 73 degrees the current temperature and it is going crazy. 73 degrees but we know it is raining in many locations and we can see that on the radar. quite a few clouds as well the region. from jacksonville to sarasota. this is slow progress. that is why it has taken a little long tore get here. develop. it is associated with the cold front. it will make an impact once the front sweeps on through. much cooler air. it will stay a while. highs in the 60s the next several days. some pretty good areas of heavy rain. from hernando, the western parts of pasco county. west of i-75. good downpours moving into the southern part of pinellas county. western parts of manatee. you can see the progress rolling along generally in a northeasterly way. you are getting some very good

surprised at that amount. almost two inches of rain in citrus county in a relative short amount of time. rain comes through, looks like the west chase area north of downtown saint petersburg. some strong downpours. generally dry inland. you can see folks in polk county haven't seen rain yet. but will see some. it will likely lose some of its steam but it is certainly out there. the sun is back but it is much, much cooler. so bring a jacket, a sweater if you are headed out there. also, a bit of a breeze kicking up. 65 degrees at 7:00 p.m. still going to remanned mild. the humidity still in the atmosphere. the rain chances are out here as well hour by hour. dropping to near 49 degrees there at 4:00 a.m. chilly, 45 degrees. starting some clearing taking place with the sun coming back in the afternoon. side. 59 degrees largo. 76 brandon. a lot of this rain. we are seeing the temperature change from north to south as the influence from the cold

20 degrees here between crystal river and lake placid. we see more of a northerly flow. but already, the influence from the front is moving into the area. and that is drawing a stronger northwest wind into the region. there is our cold front. where it is located. it is headed through the area. rain just along the boundary and on ahead of it, quite a few clouds too. the model here for the short term, all the showers continue to push in the evening hours off to the east. a slight chance of showers probably up until midnight. a few clouds leftover. then we will see the clearing take place. the stronger winds moving in from the north and the chillier conditions will continue to build in after that tomorrow morning. then in the afternoon, a lot of sunshine, breezy, chilly. so just get used to thinking cool. because, we are going to need it. 60 degrees for friday for a high. 64 degrees as we get into saturday. 62 for sunday. 60s even upper 50s through this period. and we talked about this yesterday guys. we did some analysis on the forecast for the next, well, month. and all we did roughly, a

the problems have caused at least 11 deaths and 139 injuries worldwide. dirt devil is recalling one of the vacuum cleaners due to a electrical shock hazard. it includes three models of the total pet cyclonic vacuums. no injuries have been reported yet. and a california man is suing mcdonalds in federal courtover what he says is fake cheese in the mozzerella sticks. chris howell wants his 1.27 back and he is seeking damages for u.s. customers he says were misled. mcdonalds is promising to fight the claim. you don't want to go up against mcdonalds for 1.27. mcdonalds will not give it back. >> he wants everyone to have their 1.27 back. >> that is not real cheese.
