5:01 pm
>> apparently they were not interested at all. fox news did a focus group. when canned what they thought, viewers responded with words like disappointing, embarrassing, and shameful. >> at the end. trump's rivals agreed to support him if he is the nominee. >> i wouldn't vote for donald trump and i wouldn't vote for hillary clinton. i intend to vote for our nominee. i expect that nominee to be a real conservative. a real republican. >> the bitter fighting in the republican party has voters and candidates wondering about the general election. >> senator marco rubio said if the mood doesn't change, the gop will lose to hillary clinton. political reporter mark meridith is kicking off our team coverage tonight. we have learned donald trump is backing out of this political action conference. what does all this mean?
5:02 pm
it means quite a bit. because donald trump is essentially snubbing his nose at the conservative group meeting down the road here in washington. they are bringing ted cruz and marco rubio. the who's who of the republican party. as we are talk about donald trump deciding to skip the conference and campaign in kansas. then he is headed to florida to have a rally in orlando. he will do what we saw him do tuesday. he will hold a press conference at prime time 9:00 p.m. at west palm beach. what is interesting about this strategy, it goes against what everyone else is doing. there are a handful of states that will be voting on saturday. then we have more contests on tuesday. and believe it or not guys, another republican debate is scheduled for thursday night. so less than a week away. if it is anything like what we saw last night as you were just talking about, some of the comments made, it will be echoed again because of the strategy that has been going on right now. it is still working for grabbing people's attention.
5:03 pm

5:04 pm
right now, hillary clinton is poll. good weekend for bernie sanders. there will be the debate on sunday night for the democrats. another one for the republicans. but, right now, hillary clinton's campaign is already looking forward to november because if you listen to the debate last night for the republicans, you didn't hear bernie sanders' name mentioned. he was once called as a socialist, but really the hillary clinton. >> all right. one of the most interesting mark thank you. >> some in the republican party seem to be panicking over the idea that trump will be the nominee. >> in fact, many are actually talking about a contested convention. our team coverage will continue right now with 8 on your side's candace mccowan as she explains what that would actually mean. >> reporter: good evening. we could see a contested convention come july if one of the candidates doesn't have a majority of the delegates by the time they get to the republican convention in cleveland.
5:05 pm
nominee, a candidate needs 1,236 delegates out of 2,470. donald trump is well on his way, but he has not sealed the nomination. here is why. he is still one of four real options and the field may not get any smaller any time soon, especially if senator marco rubio wins florida and governor john kasich wins ohio on march 15, their home states. here is what happens. each of the delegates would vote by secret ballots. if one of the candidates doesn't get a majority, they would vote again after some campaigning until one of the candidates did walk away with the majority of the delegates. but here is another curve ball. to even be considered at the convention, a candidate must have won a majority in eight states. trump is already there. others have some work to do. i tell you all that to let you know that in the end, the republican officials, they can still change all of the rules up until a few days before the
