it's a historic visit, president obama is in cuba today and 8 on your side is as well. a crash kills three people and leaves a car in shreds and it happened after a birthday celebration. we know who is inside of a plane that crashed friday. tonight, friends remember the two air force academy grads. i'm josh benson. >> and i'm jenn holloway. thank you for joining us. for the first time, since the 1920s, an american president is visiting cuba. president obama sat down with cuban president raul castro. keith cate is in havana right now. we sent keith to find out how the improved relationships with cuba is impacting the bay area and the cuban people. we'll have keith's report in a few minutes, but first let's go to jenn holloway

>>reporter: after six decades of hostility, a sit down with -- the communist dictator. the brother of the leader of the revolutionary of 1961 took to the stage. they're side by side at a press conference. the audience was filled with a huge reputation from washington. 40 members of congress, both democrats and republicans making it the largest such delegation of obama's presidency. during his speech, the president stated the embargo is going to end although he says it will take time and not sure how fast change will come. >> i have said consistent after five decades, the relationship between our governments will not be transformed overnight. we continue as president castro indicated to have serious incidents including on democracy and human rights.

say there's an enormous hope of reconciliation and enemy. the first lady and the president will host a dinner and tomorrow morning, president obama is expected to speak to the cuban public by television and then he'll attend the baseball game between the cuban national league. jenn. >> thank you. as jenn mentioned this visit includes a game between the tampa bay rays team. >> keith cate is in havana. he flew to cuba weekend. and he tells us after days of rain whether it might cooperate for a ball game. >>reporter: good evening you can hear the crack of the bat. that means the weather has improved enough for some of the ray's players to get out here too latino too to this is more than baseball. the president continues his tour around havana trying to talk with

business leaders. a lot is changing here in cuba and people are waiting in all kinds of weather to catch a glimpse of the president and this change. you're are president. this man says cubans are watching for -- they like catching a moment in time for the future when people here with prosper and thrive in business and freedom without what they call the black aid or u.s. trade embargo. the president campaigned on a message of hope and change. cuba. and the people here did you ever think you would come to see this day, the states in cuba? >> the man told me he never thought he would live to see this day because the political differences between the two countries surrounded by his family, he stood amazed by what he was

the younger generation seems more expectant. we saw men playing baseball in the park. it was a way to bridge that political divide. when i a lived at the jose airport, i saw families reuniting with loved ones, but they were surrounded by tampa bay rays fans like the reverend miguel who hopes to get into the game on tuesday. he's dreamed of this historic day years ago. he showed me a picture from a visit in 1999 when he reached out to shake the hand of castro. >> what were you thinking? >> i was thinking more than anything of what's actually happening right now. the reconciliation of both countries, reaching out to the leader because when you reach out to government leaders, you reach out to the whole nation. >> there is a lot of hope for what these ties could bring. the president will speak to the people of cuba on cuban tv. the president of the united states. that has never been done before

what could be better than that. reporting from havana, i'm keith cate, back to you. >> keith will bring us reports from cuba. we're going to hear from him at 6:00 and tonight on channel news at 11. sheriff's and police officers calling it the worse crash they have seen. the car hit a tree so hard it split in two. john rogers joins us live from the scene. john, do we know if alcohol was a factor in this crash? >>reporter: police are working on that jenn. i want to give you a picture of how bast this accident was. the car struck a second tree to my left shoulder. the force was so impact, the car split in two and the other vehicle sailed passed this tree. a friend of the victims told me they're celebrating someone's 21st birthday.

21st birthday. sarasota police got word of a terrible crash on university parkway near de soto road. what they saw was shocking and gruesome. >> the scene was key on the -- the scene was chaotic. >> the car truck a tree it split in half. the accident claimed three lives. 21-year-old wesley and 21 michael duffy and 21 dan. the soul survivor, thomas bentley just turned 21 today. bentley was with the men celebrating his birthday last night. and he invited his friend ethan to tagalong. >> is it weird to think that they invited you to go with them. >> it's super weird. >> weaver knew the group, but he was close to bentley. the trio worked together at guitar sentcenter. >> weaver just spoke to his

him to speak about him in the past sense. >> he was a friendly guy and super easy to talk to. you can always talk to him and just very personalable. >> the survivor thomas bentley wrote a statement on facebook saying in part, they should be remembered as the good people that great musicians, great people and amazing friends. i'm thankful to be here today, but they'll never be forgotten. >> those three men were beloved and we've seen messages pouring through social media with people praying for them. earlier today, i saw a girl who spent 20 minutes sobbing at the scene of the crash. jen. >> young victims. do we know which one was the driver and if you do, do you have an idea if that person had prior driving -- >> police tells us that west was the one driving. i checked court records and he's been cited numerous times over the past few

>> such a sad story. john rogers live in sat county. thank you john. it may be a year before the ntsa -- friends identified the two pilots who died in that take off. news channel 8 mark douglas joins us live at the airport with the latest. hi, mark. >>reporter: good evening to you, josh. as you can tell by this makeshift memorial. a sandy vent for the families of these -- a sad event for these two men. both died on that runway late friday morning. witnesses say there was another plane taking off around the time of this crash friday. and there is video to prove that. but ntsb investigators aren't yet willing to conclude that contributed to the crash. >> there's evidence that there's two air planes taking off approximately at

whether the accident occurred coincidenceal, i'm not sure yet. >> the plane crashed and burned on take off. he was a combat pilot and held many certifications as a civilian pilot. he was a family man, a father and davis island's resident. >> it hit you hard especially someone you know well. >> another one is identified as kevin. he's a -- fellow academy graduate david served in the air force with carino and has been his friend since 1983. >> he was a loving friend and a very generous father and grandfather. >> carino was an attorney and expert in security law. he was florida commissioner of financial regulation. it's not clear what triggered friday's crash, but hickman says both men were disciplined pilots

military. >> they would have followed a check list. that's the way lou was trained and that's the way kevin and i was trained when we went through flight training as cadets at the air force academy. >> the ntsb tells us they know the identity of the pilot take off around the same time. the aviation authorities is refusing to release video of the crash to us, and the ntsb has that. >> we hear when there's a plane crash, ntsb will investigate. it's going to take a long time. will this take a year to figure out what happened? >> they're promising a preliminary report in 7 to 10 day, but it will take a year for the final report. the details, we'll know in 7 to 10 days. >> mark, thanks. new tonight, we have

killed a deputy in a wrong-way crash was very drunk. the medical examiner's office found that mac beth had an alcohol level of point 27 at the time of the crash on the selmon express way on march 12th. mac beth and kotfila died in the crash. check out cash camera that was driven by -- of river view. it's heading south in the northbound lane near fowler avenue. the deputy had to act quickly. she got -- >> she seemed more concerned about asking the officers why they weren't out arresting murderers and drug dealers than the consequences to her actions. >> asia faces charges for driving under the influence as well as going the wrong way. the state is

we see in southern area s, a few -- northern spots and clear skies and 64 degrees. that's cool though. 33% relative humidity. they issued a frost advisory until 9:00 a.m. for the northern counties away from the coast. lighter winds in the inland spots, you can see frost in citrus. inland spots tonight, quick warmup though. 64 degrees. 72 degrees for tuesday. by wednesday, 80 degrees. it doesn't stick around long. this is our cool day and also cool night into the overnight. that's why we're talking about a frost advisory in late march. spring breakers are loving it. 70 degrees. our air temperature is 7 1 degrees and the skies -- blue sky and sunshine in the

couple of days, but gets much more unsettled as we head into the end of the week. 62 degrees at 7:00 p.m. 58 degrees, our temperature at 9:00 p.m. 56 degrees at 10:00 p.m. the clear skies -- chilly overnight. down into the 40s. 51 degrees at 7:00 a.m. 50 degrees at 8:00 a.m. and that means colder temperatures in northern spots. if you want to make the most of this cold air, go outside tomorrow morning and enjoy it because before too long, the hot temperatures are going to be here and they're going to be here to stay. 58 degrees, treasure island. 56 in clearwater beach. 67 in brandon. 64 in lakeland. and 63 in venice and sarasota. so the temperatures are cool and winds strong coming from the northwest and north. it's gusting over 20 miles-an-hour in tampa. high pressure dominates the high clouds over the area, and will for the first couple of days. beautiful weather forecast with this feature on top of us.
