12:00 pm
"today" with hoda kotb and kathie lee gifford. >> we have ryan scott, one of our favorite chefs. we're going to figure that out. >> and we're going to talk about your trip to israel. obviously, one of the most
12:01 pm
i cannot wait to see this. at a time we could all use a little more faith with what's going on in brussels, belgium. >> a lot of people who i was, you wake up in the morning and often, you go through a morning thing and whenever you wake up and and the terrorist attack in brussels happened around 8:00 a.m. during the height of morning rush. there was explosions at the airport, on subway systems, and the casualty number is fluid. you wheel your luggage in to the ticket counter, think of like, any airport.
12:02 pm
these pictures, how horrific this is. anyone who's been to an airport can imagine what that fear must feel like when you're walking into an airport. these two blasts came four days after the paris attacks. and people couldn't figure out this guy and whether these attacks were ordered or inspired by isis or whatever. it's all connected to the exact samg thing same thing. the victims, does it. >> no, it doesn't. you wake up and you feel weirdly afraid, just in your normal
12:03 pm
>> i do travel quite a bit. just even something as simple as the concierge saying you know what, where are you going? you'll say and say, don't go down that way. ways that concierges, just give you a map and say, have a nice day. it's been happening for a long time. and for whatever reason, now, they're finally saying, as the prime minister of france said, we are at war. yes, we are. we have been for a long, long time. >> and i think when you see right now, they're still counting how many of the injured, how many have perished in this. sometimes it's one image. a woman walking with her and a scared woman and her child made completely crystal clear for every mom who's held her baby and then someone on the road.
12:04 pm
belgium's foreign minister said they were planning to restart something in brussels. not 100% sure whether it was in the works already or in reaction to the capture. >> but i thought they had been the paris attacks. >> they were. they shut down the subways, remember, for the first time and doing? subways down? >> now it's back again. anyway, it's a hard thing to show like ours. we try to help you forget. so we'll segue this today. you might have reached the saturation point. this is a nice story. it is world water day today and that's why we're drinking water. >> for the first time since the show's inception, pretty much. >> it's about appreciating what we take for granted here. that's the water we drink in and bathe in and we have exchanged
12:05 pm
to bring awareness to the ness ness to those who do not access to clean water. >> i wanted to pay homage to jars of clay. hunger.org said 2 billion people worldwide drink unsafe water and every day, over 1,000 children die from illnesses caused by dirty water. this is supposed to make us happy. >> no, when you think about the number of people who die from that. day. >> blood water. please. jars of clay raises funds to stop the hiv/aids virus and water crisis in africa. they're doing amazing things. the leader of the group was in africa and saw the people there leaning down with their faces in, like, just the dirt. doing? >> what were they doing? >> looking for water.
12:06 pm
>> it changed his life. he started bloodwater.org. >> it's good for him doing that. the first time i saw the group was at your house. >> raised money for the organization. >> i got to tell you something. when they sang, they sound like angels. who are these guys, jars of clay. you've never heard them. and they have, do we have a bit of that song? >> that's called music, hoda. >> i've heard it. just spectacular. it's a big day for the gifford family in the fact that my first born, cody newton, is 26 years old today. that's going to make a lot of people out there feel very, very old. the premiere and then his sister, kat. there he is at 2 years old,
12:07 pm
it's just hard to believe he's 6'4" now. and there he was wearing his dad's jersey. so he is in oxford right now in england studying. i love you and can't wait until you're home. >> it must be hard. >> it's a big house, empty most of the time now. >> he'll be home soon. >> very soon. very soon! >> i like when you yell. we have a couple of tennis controversies too. they both make us mad. we talk about the one from or do you want to do this? >> let's do them in order. >> okay, novak is in trouble. the way prizes should be changed, he said. he thinks male tennis players should get more prize money than women tennis players. >> like they did for decades and decades? >> because the matches attract more specspectators. >> first of all, he shouldn't say that.
12:08 pm
i'm sure packs it as much. if you have more of a box office, you deserve more money. no, you'd think for some, they probably do make more because they don't fill the stand. since 2007, there's been this equal prize money thing. that means that the australian open and wimbledon. everybody gets an equal purse. men and women. >> wouldn't you? >> it took a long, long time. he's the only person to get in trouble in the tennis world. >> i've not seen this. hoda was livid. the more i heard it, me too. >> this guy, the indian tournament director. was. i don't know what the question was, accused of making sexist comments this week. let's look at what he told the
12:09 pm
>> never met an australian that i didn't like. until today. what was he doing? >> i don't know. >> everybody responded. serena responded saying we as women have come a long way. we shouldn't have to drop to our knees at any point. >> he later said, i apologize and made comments in extremely poor taste and erroneous and last night, he resigned. and then said it was taken out of context. there's lots of stuff. you can always tell by tone. >> man up.
12:10 pm
maybe he needs to get down on his knees and beg for forgiveness. >> you know what i like about you? >> i think about that. >> these south africans. australia is safe. it's south africa. >> we knew he couldn't have been an aussie. battlegrounds last night on "the voice." porter. i actually met her years ago when she was on star search. >> you know her as curly sue. >> she was up against an 18-year-old lacey mandigo. who do you think she kept? california dreaming on such a

all the leaves are brown and the sky is gray i went for a walk on a winter's day >> curly, give it to the old lady. curly sue. >> tough decision. but who is the winner of the battle? >> i have to commend you. you're a strong girl. strong voice. allison. >> allison, congratulations. >> allison's natural ability and her vocals range, incredible. >> laci, everybody.
12:12 pm
it's interesting, when they got the song "california dreaming" she had never heard of the song and the mamas and the papas. she's young. >> but you know. >> you didn't know people in the 1900s who were singers. >> nobody did, okay? not even frank. don't forget, we give away it. and we could use some spirituality, more of my visit to the don't use windex to make
