killed a woman during a training exercise is no stranger to controversy. officer lee coel was accused of using excessive force during a take down where his canine bit and tugged at a suspect for nearly 2 minutes. the city of punta gorda is mourning the death of mary knowlton. she was shot and killed during the training exercise of the police department on tuesday. during the demonstration, officer coel was supposed to shoot turned out to be real bullets. the police chief says no one knew the gun had to live ammo. the woman's son has a message for the officer. >> we forgive you. my mom forgives you. we know what it means for this to happen -- nobody means for this to happen. >> reporter: fdle is investigating. officer coel is on administrative leave with officers with him to make sure he is psychologically stable.

an ex-con with a history of anger issues was killed after picking a fight with another driver. gary durham was shot just before sunrise today. deputies tell us the confrontation started when he got out of his car and argued with robert padgett, who was behind him in traffic. durham served time in prison after killing a man in 2001 in a road rage case. deputies want to remind us all to stop and think before reacting in situatio >> i certainly know being five minutes late isn't worth losing your life. we encourage the public if they are in a traffic incident to take a deep breath or don't engage with anybody. just drive on and find your own business. >> the surviving driver in this case, robert padgett, is not facing charges at this time. deputies tell us he was actually trying to save
