but there was some heartache as well. five medals in the pool friday for team usa. katie ledecky leaving everyone in her wake as she easily takes home gold in the 800 free. smashing her previous time and setting a new world record. >> another gold medal in the 800 and the world record. >> reporter: the nearest competitor 11 seconds behind her. >> it felt good the i could feel it was faster than any other swim i've had in that event. >> reporter: a miraculous three-way tie in the men's 100. michael phelps sharing the podium with two others while he owns a stunning 27 olympic medals. >> always i want to be faster and on top of the medal podium. that's what i can do today. i have another race tomorrow. we'll get ready for that. >> reporter: phelps giving up gold to singapore's joseph schooling.

phelps when he was just a fan in 2008 before the beijing olympics. >> watching joe and what he has done over the last two years, he is swimming great. my hat's definitely off to him. >> reporter: and maya dirado surprising, perhaps, even herself, as she snagged the win in the 200 backstroke. >> i could tell i was in the race at the end. i was just trying so hard to get my tempo over and hit the wall. i can't believe it. these games. overcome with emotion on the podium. ? >> is he going to do it again? you bet he is! >> reporter: and considered an old man in the games. 35-year-old anthony ervin taking goal in the 50 free, 16 years after he won that event at the sydney games in 2000. >> maybe a piece of me wanted to see if i could get that medal back.

he also made the podium, snagging bronze. in the olympic stadium, michelle prada stunned as she won the first gold medal ever for team usa in the shot put. and men's team fencing finally bringing home some hardware in the form of a bronze medal, the first for team usa in the event since 1932. while u.s. women's soccer still reeling after the defeat from sweden. the defending gold medalists now heading home. not used to losing, emotions ran high. but it was happy at times in the stands. and kerri walsh jennings and april ross dominating on the beach, taking down italy in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals. of course all eyes willing on michael phelps tonight. he'll be swimming in what will

pain from all these medals. >> this is only the second time i put them all on together. it will take some getting used to. >> we were huddled around the television at the hotel watching the event. first of all, the 800-meter freestyle lasts forever. >> oh, yeah. >> over eight minutes. >> yes. >> it was striking at the end. there you are at the end of the race on the podium doing what you've done five times this week. listening to that national anthem, the flag goes up, once even during the fifth time. why? >> i think all of the emotions from the whole week hit me. it was my last race of a four-year journey. i shared that with my coach and family and my teammates. i'm proud to be part of the usa swim team. it's a really special team this year. looking back on the past couple weeks, the emotions just hit me, because i had so much fun. >> you are in a league of your own when it comes to the competition. you're 19.

fall. you're going to keep swimming. what does tokyo look like for you? >> it is hard to look that far just having finished the meet. i know i will set new goals and work toward those like i did these past four years. hopefully i can achieve those again. >> you are done here in rio. there is more than a week left in the games. will you hang out and enjoy the experience? >> i will be here a couple more days and then head home. i have to get ready for school. i want to share this with my family and f >> this is your first time getting a chance to see your family? >> i have been away for about a month. >> we didn't want you to leave empty handed. we heard during your training you had to give up something. you had to give up pizza. >> no. we wanted to -- >> i didn't really give up pizza. >> we wanted to make sure you had some. >> i'll share this with tony and maya. i have plenty of people to share with. >> katie, thank you. >> congratulations.

michael's going to be there. these two are roommates, competitors at heart, rivals in the pool but great friends. how much has the team, the bond, really pushed phelps and lochte? >> i love seeing them together. you know, you go through so much and you listen to the athletes that were just here talking about their teammates and what the team means to them. think about the pressures, all the stress. you live with them and train with them 24 hours. those bonds form. for michael and ryan, they very been doing this for many olympics. >> let's talk about the pizza delivery woman, katie ledecky, for a moment. in terms of what we have seen from her in rio, how would you characterize it and the spos prekts of her moving forward? >> i have no words for her swimming. she's so incredible. she won the race by 11 seconds. it speaks for herself. as you just saw, she holds herself with class and
