parents abstudents need the hear. plus, they're low on prices but hoy on crime. 8 on your side asks what the police are doing in the bay area to cut down on lawbreakers at wal-mart. good evening. >> and thank you for joining us tonight. emotions running high as duane jones steps out of the jail and into the arms of his aunt and mother. two years after being charged in the death of a clearwater woman, the prosecutors decided they don't have a case. the murder of lydia anne troughs sparked concern about safety on the trail. a grandfather and a grandson picking flowers discovered her naked body in a ditch. days later the clearwater police announced that a neighborhood teenager killed her. we're live at the jail tonight and that's where duane jones walked out after two years behind bars. peter? >> reporter: and they never believed that he was responsible, and they stood behind him for all of those two years. they did not buy the police

a robbery. in the lobby of the jail, duane jones' mother and aunt waited nervously for his release. screams of delight echoed in the stark halls. called d.j. by his family, the women took turns giving him hugs. two years ago along the trail two people found the body of lydia anne troughs, she had had an argument with her her wallet in his house. cops believe they had their killer. with jones' confession tossed out, his public defenders tell me the case fell apart. >> come over and say hi to us. >> reporter: asked if he committed the crime. >> i didn't. >> that's right. >> it is god. it is god. >> reporter: but what about the wallet? >> howdied that stuff get in the house that day? >> reporter: jones headed for

he never, ever, and in jesus name he never did it. >> reporter: his public defenders tell me he found the wallet and intended to turn it in. his confession coerced after nine hours of interrogation. the investigators will continue to seek justice and insist the detectives did not make agregious errors and used proper criminal procedure saying they made a good faith effort to interview jones. his mother never believed her so and i know he was innocent. >> reporter: from one you knew he was innocent? >> yes. >> reporter: and a pair of public defenders tell me they doubt it was homicide or murder in the first place. they said her boyfriend told the cops that she was suicidal and that any injuries on her neck may have been caused by animals. >> an emotional reunion, though. thank you. live. and there has been an

an elderly tampa man who was found unconscious in his own back yard. the originally the police were looking for a suspect to get information on the casement tonight he is in custody charged with aggravated battery. the tell tell us cordero attacked the 81-year-old after a dispute over a lawn care payment. he is still in critical condition. and students getting ready to start the school yore at usf got a startling welcome. a man exposing himself. in fact, tampa police say this three times. and we are joined now live from the university of south florida's campus. and same the students are a little rattleed here. i can only imagine what -- rattled here. i can only imagine what a parents are thinking. >> reporter: that's right. when you drop your children off, the last thing you want the hear about is somebody dropping their pants on cam put, but for the parents, that was a reality today. >> yeah, i don't need to see that. >> reporter: seeing a

the united states is on track to finish the rio olympics at the top of the medal board, but it has been a somewhat challenging day. >> team usa lost solid bids for gold in wrestling and men's volleyball. the disqualification other a batched -- botched hand-off. we're live in rio and we were supposed to take home the bronze and instead we're slapped >> reporter: we can't win them all, and it is one of those days where there were bumps the the road for team u.s.a. us. a lot of the focus was in the about team u.s.a., but perhaps the gettest track oh limp i don't know of all time, the final race for usain bolt. in his past eight olympic races, he has won nothing but gold and he was determined to finish his career where he seemingly always has been nfront. -- in front. his ninth and likely final gold

>> it has been a great couple of weeks this thank you. and live in rio. and our own paul ryan will also be in rio through the end of the games. get the latest updates on wfla.com. so what is going on at wal- mart? bloomberg news published a report this week claiming that many wal-mart stores across the country have an out-of-control crime problem. they found 200 violent crimes have taken place at the nation's 4,500 wal-marts, an ave crime per day. 8 on your side wanted to know what the company executives are doing to rid our wal-mart stores of crime here in the bay area. tonight we show you how they're doing. >> reporter: wal-mart says they're doing everything they can to fights crime at their stores, but 8 on your side wanted to know are they really? surveillance video shows what happens all too often at your local wal-mart, crooks cashing

for. >> they're experienced criminals, and they're organized to steal. >> reporter: on thursday, polk county sheriff busting a crime ring that stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. but it is not just about shoplifting. it is about more serious crimes, too. the most recent in the bay area in lakeland. three employees charged with manslaughter, and across the country, cases of attempted kidnappings, stabbings, shootings, even murder. >> the number of calls has gone down. >> tampa police an some other authorities say the number of calls they have gotten has gone down. but why? the top brass at wal-mart says it is getting tough on crime, instituting new programs across the country. one of them aimed directly at shoplifters. >> somebody there is caught shoplifting, their security would handle it if it is below a certain dollar amount so we don't get as many calls. >> reporter: meaning they're out patrolling the streets

news channel 8 obtained this document, with the new changes, it shows the number of calls to the bay area stores are down. in one case as much as 94%, but in the all local law enforcement agree saying they're being called out way too often to their local wal- marts. shoppers we spoke with say something has to be done. >> and a crime is a crime. no matter how big or how small. >> reporter: others don't agree saying all shoplifters should be prosecuted. and i think whether it is a al some sanction has to be given. >> reporter: and tpd say along with wal-mart, they're quote, ahead of the curve when it comes to courtroom fighting. wal-mart admits there is still a lot of work to be done. paul also reached out to st. petersburg police, and they told him crime is down at their stores as well. the president obamaing -- polk county said their numbers are not as redry available.

and around baton rouge. the critics suggest the president shopped end his martha vin beyond a reasonable doubt's visit. and the white house announced the president will make that visit on tuesday. the historic flooding blamed for damaging more than 40,000 homes and killing at least 13 people. firefighters are finally playing offense as they battle the so-called blue cut fire in southern california. right now the wildfire is about 26% contained. it scorched about 50 square miles in just a couple more than 80,000 people were forced to abandon their homes, but some of those evacuation ordered are now lifted. an 8 on your side warning for beach goers tonight. be careful where you step in the water. city of clearwater officials are warning the beach visitors about stingrays. the life guards raised the purple flag to let people know there are dangerous marine life swimming by nearby. nearly a dozen people were already stung so far this week.

some folks didn't get cooled off by the showers today, so it was very hot evening for some that did not see the rain today. the temperatures will stay warm, near 90 degrees. i mentioned the high of 93 today that is in the a record but certainly well above normal obviously. at 7:00 a.m., 78 degrees. mostly sunny skies. a 10% chance of storms earlier in the day. 87 degrees, and then 91 degrees. another hot afternoon. right now 86. still it is warm in clearwater beach. and upper 70s at odessa. crystal river, 78. sarasota, 83 degrees. the satellite shows high pressure continues to dominate. kind of backing down the our south and west. it is what is going to allow us to get more of a northwesterly flow. and that could give us a slight chance of seeing a morning coastal shower. again, that is at the surface with high pressure building in.

movement to the northwest and ventally turning to the north. we are not concerned about fiona affecting our weather here in the bay area or the rest of the state of florida. but that is a look at the satellite. the cooler cloud tops, convex, better thunderstorm development around the center of the storm itself tonight, and that continues to wander off to the northwest. now, there's fiona. we also have a tropical wave that has a potential over a five-day period. about a 50% chance of development. also we have an of africa that once it emerges a tropical wave could become a 30% chance of a tropical system. this time of year, the eastern atlantic and look for these developing systems. so 99 l. is what we're calling that area south of fiona, and with 30-mile-per-hour winds, the forecast track straight west. we'll keep any on it.

just a tiny chance of seeing a coastal shower. all the way into the early part of next week. what that northwest flow does do is move everything from west to east pushing it inlan so the better chance of some convergent showers and thunderstorm also be in some of those spots. the rain chance trending lower than normal. 30% for saturday. 20% for sunday. and then by monday, a 20% chance as well. the temperatures near 90 degrees. overnight low temperatures in the upper 70s through this period. largely because we're ng off of the gulf of mexico and the waters are warm, so that just makes it feel a bit warmer. high temperatures near 90 all the way into the next week and more normal chances as we get into wednesday, thursday and probably return to that easterly flow. even though a cold front is sneaking just to our north enough to add a few storms special our forecast. the real cold front, forget about it. >> months away. >> don't even use those words. the bucs are gearing up for

well, hello from jacksonville where tomorrow night the buc also take on the jaguars in pre-season game number two. one thing we learned in the first game, this is the defense, incredible turn around so far in camp, particularly the defensive line. and one of the leaders, the bucs really didn't see this coming, a free agent. he could have gone just about anywhere, but the defensive end robert ayers fell in love with the bucs during free throw agency, and it had everything to do with a conversation with new defensive coordinator mike smith. >> and this meeting is about word of mouth. the people i know spoke highly of him and it was a good opportunity for me to play for him. he plays with a lot of passion. and when i met with him in free agency and he believes in putting guys in the best position to succeed. >> reporter: but did the bucs know what they had in him? his rise on the new york giants
