parents confronted school officials about the potentially dangerous situation. >> plus a bullet from a drive- by shooting hits a 1-year-old, new details on the shooting that has a bay area sheriff furious. good evening. i'm jennifer leigh. >> i'm keith cate. thanks for joining us tonight. we begin with the latest on tropical depression 9. storm team 8 meteorologist steve jerve joining us from the storm >> this indicates the model trend and data from the hurricane hunter aircraft goes into the computer models, so you get a bit more accurate forecast each time. tropical depression 9 and tropical depression 8 which could also become a tropical storm and hurricane gaston well out to sea. as we look at the 11:00 advisory, 35 miles per hour according to the nhc. you can see the forecast track taking that more northwesterly

northeast. wednesday at 8 p.m. 65 mile-per-hour winds, a portion of the tampa bay area in that cone of error. later thursday at 8 p.m. with 60 mile-per-hour winds keeping in mind the strongest part of the storm, the advancing part of the storms, the winds counter clockwise would be south of that spinning icon and long term pushing off to the northeast quickly friday and eventually saturday. really the focus on thursday primarily for stronger winds and also higher winds and rains that may carries basically what the spaghetti models are saying here for tropical depression 9 off in that now familiar direction. you can see why the forecast is following that track. sandbag locations have been set up at a number of locations all over the bay area. in most cases you'll need to show identification to prove you live in the area where you pick up your free sandbags. we have a list of the sandbag locations on our website www.wfla.com. you can also read our lurk

prepare -- hurricane guide to make sure you are prepared for this storm. now some breaking news related to the storm and buccaneers fans need to pay special attention because we've learned thursday night's preseason game against the washington redskins will be impacted. >> a short time we learned this game will actually take place on wednesday. >> it is the fourth preseason game. the entire league plays thursday night because final cuts come after took some really thinking to get this moved up. it really had to be something serious. they felt it was serious enough to move it up to wednesday night, but this move wednesday for the bucs and redskins as we now know comes in advance of expected poor weather conditions throughout the day on thursday. as i said, officials from both teams got together, made this decision along with the nfl. so everybody is on board with this. it's going to go wednesday night 8:00 the bucs and redskins will finish the brea

channel 8. this has been a whacky preseason overall. the nfl lost a game the beginning of month the because of field conditions. remember the hall of fame game. >> right. >> thankfully this game was not wiped out. i don't know if that was ever discussed. the move was made for safety of fans and staff and players and everybody getting to the stadium. >> steve jerve was saying there was an option should we do it friday or wednesday? you said friday >> i didn't think they could do it friday. i'm speaking from the football side of it because everybody plays thursday night. if they're going to start releasing players on friday, bucs and redskins haven't played a game yet, that would be unfair to those two teams if they're looking for players. >> especially all those young players trying to make the teams. more on this coming up in sports. well, are kid enduring moldy classrooms at plato academy in largo.

parents who are again venting their fears and frustrations this time to the charter board school of education. the parents demand answers. what are those black spots on desks, floors, walls and ceilings? peter bernard is live for us in largo where the tone of this meeting was quite a bit different than friday. >> reporter: a little easier to sit through tonight, no screaming, yelling, no interrupting at this emergency board meeting tonight and parents learned a private company will come in and back some trust that was lost. at the plato academy's largo campus among parents there are two distinct factions, those who think the ceo of the company that runs the school is lying covering up an ongoing mold issue and those who believe steve christ dopoulos only has students' best interests at heart. >> i think it's been established there was no mold

done everything in his power to have it taken care of. >> reporter: several students continue to become ill with breathing problems parents believe were caused by mold. >> don't lie and say there was never an issue. own up to it and just fix it. that's all we want. >> reporter: board members did hear about an air conditioning problem over the summer which could have allowed mold to grow in some classrooms, but since then they're relying on negative test results. >> we haven't found one. it can certainly be one. if there is 1, we'll fi. stood up to say those issues aren't gone. >> back in early july i didn't see any issues of any mold or any issues of any ac breaking down. >> reporter: parents complain of ac going out and students sweltering in classrooms. they want steve christopoulos to live up to his word. >> you promised us on the news friday we could have of our choosing a mold inspector come and do the testing. >> reporter: the promise was

channel 8. that offer still stands with the ceo picking up the tab and the ceo tells me once again there are five reports that indicates there's no mold at the school. still a company called pure air will do some testing. >> where does the pinellas county school board sit on this issue? >> reporter: the pinellas county school board had their person in charge of charter schools out here tonight. he said he likes what he heard from the board, but he's going to wait and see the test results and see if the board goes along remedy. we'll see. >> but the saga will continue. peter bernard live for us in largo, thank you. coming to the defense of a mother whose baby was shot in a drive-by shooting, investigators tell us she is a known gang member, but her family is saying not so fast. there's more to the story here describing her as a loving single mom. candace mccowan joining us live from the jail in pasco county with the story. this is where the mother is facing drug charges and the family defending the mother,

the story. >> reporter: keith, good evening. that mother is facing charges not for the shooting, but what deputies found while investigating that shooting. sheriff nocco is saying the family's claims the mother is a good mother is pure fantasy. video shows moments after this drive-by shooting when an ambulance arrives and a deputy rushes out of the home putting the 1-year-old on a stretcher. >> the absolute frightening thing is that crib was hit six times. i would say if you don'tha faith, you better believe because there were angels in that crib with that little baby. >> reporter: the amazing news is that the 1-year-old is expected to survive. we blurred these pictures of the baby from her mother linda exline's facebook page, photos ex line has captioned you can tell a lot about a woman by the way she takes care of her children. >> she's read some bad dr. seuss books because she's making it all up. >> reporter: nocco says the shooting was a result of drug

arrested on drug charges and another a suspect in a shooting four days ago. tattoo on exline's face says fearless, but nocco says she's no angel with a long arrest record and gang ties. >> she was documented because of gang tattoos and because she associates with gang members. >> reporter: exline's family telling news channel 8 none of this is true. >> she's told us she's turned her life around going to school, good mother. >> the truth is that her 1-year- old was shot because of crimin surrounds that house. she can tell whatever fairytale she wants. >> reporter: child protective investigators have been involved with this family multiple times before. we understand the 1-year-old and older sibling will be going into custody of someone else. exline had another child taken from her custody, family telling me about seven to eight years ago. meantime back to the shooting, we understand that the suspects are still to the loose and there is fear of re-- still on

retaliation, so sheriff's deputies are very anxious to get them behind bars. a similar incident friday claimed the life of nba star dwyane wade's cousin. nakia aldridge was gunned down while pushing a baby stroller on chicago's south side. two known gang member brothers were allegedly gunning for someone else. both have a long criminal history and are held without bail. the growing threat of zika continues to show up in our backyard. a new nontravel-related zika ca miami-dade county bringing the total number of people contracting the illness locally in florida to 43. if you combine those cases with the travel-related cases, that number jumps to 545. of those 75 cases involve pregnant women. in sarasota a woman tells us she was given the run-around when trying to get tested for the zika virus. kimberly martinez recently began experiencing zika symptoms after returning from a caribbean vacation. she went to sarasota memorial

don't do the test. she called number after number and eventually got the test at her primary care physician. >> in the absence of information your mind fills the void with fear. >> the health department is the 1 that needs to gather those numbers. >> so officials say if you suspect you have zika, reach out to the health department or your personal physician. it's happened again, former congressman anthony reportedly facing another sexting scandal. according to the new york post weiner is still sending raunchy selfies to other women, even posting one with his 4-year-old son in the background. the new york congressman resigned from office in 2011 after admitting sending lewd photographs of himself and pursuing women on twitter. with news of that scandal he woulder in's wife huma abedin announced in a statement she has decided to separate from her husband saying this

the beginning of the game showing any type of personal salute to the country during the national anthem. the 49ers quarterback says he's taking a stand by refusing to stand to protest operational injustice in america. >> jenn holloway joining us now from the tampa news center with reaction not only from our buccaneers head coach, but also a former nfl star. >> we spoke with head coach dirk koetter as well as former nfl star today and neither one of those young men hesitated to state their opinions. >> it's my american right not to stand, but it's my right not to like it as well. >> former buccaneer ian beckles has a opinion about the 49ers quarterback refusing to stand for the national anthem. even head coach dirk koetter wasn't sure how to react, but he wants you to know he makes

and how to behave at the patriotic start of every game. >> believe it or not, we have practiced how to line up for the national anthem. >> everybody is upset about the situation. nobody is coming up with any reasons or ways we're going to change this whole thing. >> reporter: like many others he's not exactly happy about kaepernick's actions. beckles was a born canadian citizen but is now a proud american citizen and he believes in saluting the anthem, the flag, and those who offer their sacrifice to protect both. >> but maybe this helps us go and really look with a fine tooth comb about what's happening and see if we can help people out and change things. >> reporter: it's certainly not the first time any nfl football players have taken a stance on this particular issue. back in 2014 five st. louis rams players took to the field in support of ferguson protesters and they were not fined. kaepernick's $11.9 million

repercussions he might face if indeed he will face any, but you can weigh in on this controversial story on our news channel 8 facebook page. we certainly hope that you do. >> jenn holloway live in the tampa news center, thank you. in an 8 on your side consumer alert the company that sells epipens is launching a generic version of the life saving drug. the move comes after a public outcry of the skyrocketing cost of epipens. the generic will be listed at $300, half the cost of some pharmacist -- epipen. some pharms are wary say -- pharmacists are wary saying they'll believe it when they see the price fall. new hackers have reached the elections database in illinois and arizona. up to 200,000 voters records were compromised. some of the records had social security numbers and driver's license numbers. the fbi is investigating this hack. don't forget tomorrow is primary day in florida. you plight want to allow extra

extra time to stop by your polling place in terms of voting early. democrat and republican nominees will be selected from the senate and house to go on the ballot in november and there is a solar energy amendment that has proven controversial and some judges you need to vote on. for a guide to florida's primary election, you can go to www.wfla.com. tammy sent in a picture from land o'lakes today. you can see a bit of a he the sky with old glory in the foreground, beautiful sky today, certainly with nice blue sky and fair weather cloud popping up, 7 a.m., 78 degrees, mostly cloudy, kind of muggy, temperatures cooled down at times from the showers and thunderstorms that quickly moved east to west across the state. 85 degrees at noon, 90 degrees at 4 p.m. yes, we'll generate showers probably any time starting after the noon a hour. it's not impossible inland to see a few showers before that.

park, upper 70s temple terrace, lutz, 75 in brooksville, 77 in bartow and arcadia. on the satellite imagery there's our tropical depression no. 9 far down to our south not too far from cuba actually. the next couple days we'll take a big part of the flow. we'll continue in an easterly flow with high pressure to the north, showers offshore. that's the way the flow will be and probably overwhelm the west coast sea breeze. so unlike a typical summer day where we'll se between east and west coast sea breeze, not in this situation. we'll continue to watch tropical depression known 9 with 35 mile-per-hour wind -- no. 9 with 35 mile-per-hour wind sheer, dry air, kind of taken some of the wind out of the sails for this thing short term, but long term it will be a slightly better environment for growth. it does strengthen tomorrow into a tropical storm curving northeast reacting to an upper level trough passing through the eastern part of the

with 60 mile-per-hour winds and as i mentioned, with the counterclockwise rotation southern portion of this system is where the advancing stronger winds are. the concern for coastal flooding. any time during the day thursday coastal areas have to watch high tides up and down the west coast of florida including in tampa bay because that west and potentially southwest wind direction eventually off to the northeast for this one. wind speed 41 miles per hour flying out of macdill, the hurricane hunter airc today. that's why they determined not yet a tropical storm, but there was clearly a circulation at the center because we could see it on visible imagery. we're looking for more of a closed off appearance to these tropical systems. dry air continues in the mid- levels and upper levels of the atmosphere. there's the tampa bay area. this red color is drier air. that's not good for the formation of these tropical systems.

storm force winds colored in yellow, as to where they could potentially extend, 39 to 73 miles per hour as the apartment, these are lines of equal -- parameter, these are lines of equal pressure and it also indicates where the wind pattern might be. that's why we've been concerned watching high tides in the bay where we've seen bayshore flood. that's a good example of that when you have a southwesterly wind. the forecast will continue here for the evening hours, 78 degrees, very tomorrow, high temperature 90 degrees tomorrow. the next three days our rain chance runs 60% for tomorrow, not that much of a surprise that we'll see a progressive increase in the rain chances as we get especially into thursday where we expect the peak of this to occur and before that circulation can come onshore that means a lot of moisture is being funneled into the southern portion of that system and onshore on land. that could add up in terms of local flooding as well.

affect the wide receiver position battle that's still going on. however, head coach dirk koetter more than hinted today that third string quarterback ryan griffin is safe. griffin will get most, if not all the snaps on wednesday and instead of playing for a job, griffin just makes another deposit on the bucs future as in no one knows what's going to happen with current backup quarterback mike glennon once his contract is up after the season. koetter pointed out griffin's value to the >> we've invested a full year into his training. a lot of that is him and the coach a lot of time that you guys don't know about and so, you know, he's done a good job when he's been on the field and we think he's got a chance to be here long term. espn.com reporting tonight
